As an outsider, his economic policies are good and working, his social policies like using facial recognition and predictive AI to "prevent crime" are a bit worrisome.
wombat6669@reddit
If his economic policies are so good why did he need the United States to bail him out?
Low_Abrocoma_1514@reddit
Because capital was fleeing out of fear that the Left would get back in power.
Trump helped out to put trust back into Argentina.
MajorWuss@reddit
At least the foreign countries trust Trump to "currency swap" to help them out. Pretty awesome capitalism.
WaltKerman@reddit
Argentina has needed a bailout well before Milei came along. Also it's not exactly a bailout.
tinchokrile@reddit
it’s hilarious because none of these people called it a “bailout” when Argentina did the swap with China lmao
WaltKerman@reddit
It's the US news calling it a bailout because Trump is doing it. If it wasn't him you know they would have used the same name for the same thing. For now you are going to get a different name for the same thing depending on who's doing it. Mildly annoying. No one is surprised.
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
It was a currency swap not a straight bailout. But if you want the answer:
He was in power with a coalition government. He overplayed his political hand and tried to run against some coalition members with people in his own party. This pissed off those members who then sided with the Peronist bloc.
Those people won elections in Buenos Ares, which is expected. Because it's a stronghold of Peronist supporters. But the Peronists winning caused a panic in investors. The Peronists are who ruined Argentina. So when investors saw Peronists win, they got spooked. The US currency swap calmed their fears.
This isn't to say I support said swap. But Mileis mistake was one of politics, not of economics. I hope this has been educational for you.
mmmmjlko@reddit
No, it was an economic mistake. One reason behind this crisis is his economy minister doing the standard developing-country "lets keep our currency artificially high to win an incoming election" thing. All summer, people were talking about how the threat of intervention was keeping the value of the peso artificially high. So when a shock hit which made people think that the currency would fall, chaos was amplified.
This kind of currency manipulation is very statist policy, which involves directing trade and capital flows to keep the supply/demand of pesos in check. Argentina also maintained this by using its reserves of USD to buy pesos (which increased demand for pesos); note that Argentina needs reserves of USD to dollarize, and those reserves can run out too.
My take on Milei is that he should drop his economy ministe (Luis Caputo). Deregulation minister (Federico Sturzenegger) is based af though
mmmmjlko@reddit
Edit: why am I getting downvoted for calling currency manipulation statist lol
tinchokrile@reddit
you don’t know what a currency swap is, so why don’t you just google it instead of making a stupid out of yourself online, man?
Berinoid@reddit
It was a currency swap and the US has already profited off of it after the Argentine Peso went up in value
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)
You wouldn't know what Argentina's crimeworld is, i lived the insecurity and i have to say there is still nothing done yet.

I've had my home invaded. I still don't support a surveillance state. It's not libertarian. And it will be abused. Your argument is the same one that they use to defend the Patriot Act.
No.
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
Yeah been robbed at gunpoint multiple times and I’d never support a surveillance state… what a shitty take
Lopsided_Ad3516@reddit
Step 1: go to the Libertarian sub Step 2: tell people they’re stupid for not holding liberty above all Step 3: insult people for holding the beliefs you’d expect to find in this sub
What a shitty take
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
? I’ve been robbed at gunpoint and don’t want a surveillance state to stop crime. I’m pro liberty?
Didn’t we learn from Orwell already?
Maybe you misread me or I misunderstood you?

Either way there's literally no privacy online
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Using facial recognition cameras and "AI" to try and predict crimes and act on them is not libertarian, and I will not support it.
The government should not be performing dragnet surveillance on the population. It's wrong.
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)
That is what China does, it's not that 1984. The FBI, Interpol, Mossad, do you think they say that they're onto your shit before looking at your entire internet movements?

AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Are you seriously saying it's ok because it's what China does? Like is that really your argument?
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)
I was agreeing with you, it sounds dystopian but not that much
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Fuck off.
Tasty-Entertainer711@reddit
You don't need a surveillance state to combat crime.
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Using facial recognition cameras and "Predictive AI" is a surveillance state.
No.
Low_Abrocoma_1514@reddit
Face recognition is scary tho. Can easily slide into surveillance state..
ZeroFuxGiven@reddit
This is not a sarcastic question, I really haven’t looked into this much. But if his economic policies are working then why did the US bail them out?
mmmmjlko@reddit
Milei has a lot of policies. A lot of them worked, but the currency regime was unsustainable.
We saw similar things in the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997. A lot of countries with pretty good growth policies needed bailouts because their currencies were mispriced.

nocturn-e@reddit
Do you know how bad Argentina was looking before Milei? The fact that they're even still functioning right now is a miracle. So yes, despite needing some external help, what he's done with Argentina so far has been a huge success.
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
I’m from the USA and was curious of him until we gave him billions… Now fuck em
Berinoid@reddit
We didn't give them billions, we did a currency swap
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
So my tax dollars aren’t currently in the Argentinian economy?
Personal_Eye_3439@reddit
The US has made money from the currency swap as the Peso went up
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
Interesting.
We don’t know any details yet though. Just the treasurers word.
Still regardless I don’t think we should be bailing out other nations in this way.
We should still focus on ourselves.
BlueOmicronpersei8@reddit
Clearly you don't know any details. You're an idiot who can't figure out what the hell is going on.
It's a tool the US uses to keep the dollar as the most used currency in the world in order to offset our own idiotic government spending. If we didn't have a global dollar our inflation would be through the roof.
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
clearly you don't understand that I think that idiotic spending shouldn't be happening to begin with and we should focus on making this nation a better place for all.
to hell with Argentina and Israel.
BlueOmicronpersei8@reddit
The Argentina money isn't even spending. It's a risky AF loan.
Evening_Lynx_9348@reddit
I understand that and still think its a bad idea
Personal_Eye_3439@reddit

The peso is wildly unstable, you go to Argentina they can’t even list food prices on restaurant menus. A lot of restaurants are market price on regular dishes.

ValorantEdater@reddit
Argentina won't stop being a hell either. If they would, they wouldn't need to get bailed out every 3 years.
Only thing Supernova about Argentina is their ability to suckle the teat of other governments while claiming they are anti-government.

Carry on, don't give me just a bone.
CalligrapherOther510@reddit
I don’t like that he is trying to be explicitly Pro-West when the West has failed itself immensely the West is the home of “woke”, progressivism, socialism and DEI yet he wants to join the Western Bloc instead of maintaining a non-aligned position for Argentina which is advantageous for any country the ability to openly trade and negotiate with all major power blocs. I also just dislike his personality and his desire to also entangle Argentina in the conflict in Israel, and I also don’t like that my president Trump sent him billions of dollars, I am also against the dollarization of Argentina because that causes inflationary pressure on my country’s by increasing circulation and supply driving up prices. I’m just not a fan of his.
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)
Do you want a country that support Venezuela?
CalligrapherOther510@reddit
Not support but if I were President of the United States I’d engage with Venezuela diplomatically, I would not demand regime change or anything and I would treat them like adults just like the way I’d treat Argentina, I don’t like Socialism or Bolivarianism or anything of the sort, I would not want to live under Maduro’s Venezuela but I don’t believe its my place or any other country’s place to dictate what kind of government or economy another must have.
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)
The thing is, that word "diplomatically" doesn't makes part for Venezuela's regime.
CalligrapherOther510@reddit
I don’t have anything against Venezuela or its government, if the Venezuelan population hates the government so much they should revolt but not expect America to support it.
Significant_Fee_3089@reddit (OP)

I think Argentina defaults everytime they are bored, no matter the goverment in power. Milei tried a play, went wrong and had to go beggin to the US to stop the bleed.
