Full face motorcycle helmets in cold weather?

I'm curious why I never hear of anyone using full face (or modular) motorcycle helmets when the temps start dropping in the winter? As a decades-long motorcycle rider, and now a convert to an ebike, I will consider winter riding with a motorcycle helmet to keep out the elements. My face, and specifically my eyes and ears, are always the most susceptible to cold wind. Anyone else use motorcycle helmets?
mperham@reddit
look into snowboarding helmets. good for cold.
ExtremeProfession113@reddit
No need; of course it depends on local conditions.
Wear a high quality balaclava that covers the nose; 45nrth works for me. When it starts to get very cold -15 C a thin toque or winter hat works; of course if you have a long ride you might put the hat on earlier; it’s all about covering the forehead for me, that gap between balaclava and my glasses. I use anti-fog wipes that help avoid my glasses from fogging up on rides. They will fog when I stop and look down, otherwise once I’m moving no issues. I use my regular eyeglasses or sunglasses.
The coldest I’ve been out has been -25 C with significant wind chill on top of that at around 30 mph on downhills. Usually the colder it gets the slower I ride for various reasons. Only rarely hitting high speeds on hills. This helps reduce windchill with lower average speeds. It’s still cold. I imagine if ambient temps were colder or my ride was longer than 30 mins, I’d alter my gear. But I’m not sure I’d go full face motorcycle given the risk of increases injuries.

I go by the temperature out. this outfiit if good down to 40'.
below that, I have a full face. and a liner for the jacket. and heavier gloves...

I wear a dh full face year round but in winter it's with a balaclava underneath and photochromatic ski goggles. My helmet is not necessarily for winter because of the vents but I find the vents to help with off gassing extra heat.
Plus-Palpitation8024@reddit (OP)
I've never heard of dh brand motorcycle helmets?
BWWFC@reddit
motorcross style... open face but with chin bar and visor.
SupaBrunch@reddit
Dh means downhill, referring to downhill mountain bike helmets. It’s a style of helmet, not a brand.
Motorcycle helmets are quite heavy, so usually if people want a full face helmet, they’ll by a downhill mountain bike helmet instead.

I have a modular for winter and rainy days, absolutely love it
MasterChiefette@reddit
I wear modular fullface.
Exciting-Peak70@reddit
If you haven't heard of this, your not reading not are you watching many videos. I've been rocking a full face helmet in the winter for the last 3 years. I also suggest a scarf or similar neck warmer to go along with the helmet.
aerosolized@reddit
Full face motorcycle helmet no matter the weather for me. Rain, snow, or sun, I really like my teeth.
adaminc@reddit
Snowmobile helmets would be better, still full face, but they also have better ventilation so it doesnt fog up as easily.
VariousAd5939@reddit
I wear mine no matter the season or weather, even if I'm just going around the corner or across the street. I have the carbon fiber Project 23 by 7iDP. This is my second 7iDP helmet. I love it. So much comfy padding inside, and it has 23 ventilation holes, even ventilation holes by my ears in case I get an itch there with my helmet on. Oh and it does actually keep my face warm when I gotta bike home from work after midnight
I get most of my cycling gear from Cambriabike.com
VariousAd5939@reddit
I like that 7iDP makes XL & XXL helmets because I got a big head with a poofy fro, but also I'm able to wear a beanie under my helmet when it gets cold
Chilkoot@reddit
It entirely depends on how fast you're going and how much of your own wind-chill you're generating. Moving at 24km/h - 32km/h, I'm good down to about -10C with a quality bellaclava. I seldom bike below -15C out of concern for the lithium cell at those temps.
You also don't want your eyeballs to freeze shut when you blink (kind of terrifying when it happens), so a pair of goggles is also helpful.
leathrow@reddit
real talk i just wear sunglasses and a very nice wool scarf wrapped around my nose and mouth
sometimes i wear a helmet based on road conditions
KostyaFedot@reddit
Is it American style e-moped with throttle and speed way over 25kmh?
If so, full size helmet won't suffer from sweat.
I have EU legal e-bike and moped category Vespa.
Once temperature is around zero Celsius my full size helmet is good match to ride on Vespa at speeds below 50 kmph.
But I still pedal for real on e-bike at 30 kmph max (assistance is off after 25 kmph) and sweat comes out even at freezing temperatures. Toque for cycling is enough.
I wear cycling glasses year around. For obvious reasons.
redrightred@reddit
Try a full face mountain bike helmet if motorcycles ones are too heavy. There are even ones where the front detaches and turns into a regular bike helmet.
Significant-Pen-6049@reddit
Too heavy for me. On a cycle your upright and can balance it. On a bike your hunched over and it feels heavy as hell. At least that’s what it was like when I tried
Plenty_Spend5074@reddit
I just wear a good ski mask and beanie combo, I feel hauling around a motorcycle helmet would be more inconvienence than anything.
chimpMaster011000000@reddit
Bro pls at least wear a regular helmet, you've got a death wish hauling around on an e-bike without one.
Plenty_Spend5074@reddit
I wear a bike helmet, but not an entire motorcycle helmet. I recently had a crash where the only thing that stopped me from freezing to death from being knocked unconscious was a helmet.
chimpMaster011000000@reddit
Gotcha gotcha I thought you were out there in just a beanie. Where TF are you that temps are that cold already?
Plenty_Spend5074@reddit
Here in south jersey its like 10-20 mph winds with 20-30 temps right now. It will only get colder (snow is expected this week), I work the night shift so I'm leaving at 11 pm, I crashed and hit my head in the woods on a bike trail, got my face good, if I landed on my bare skull I probably wouldn't get back up, no one would be there to find me, probably wouldnt be able to wake up before hypothermia kicks in.
chimpMaster011000000@reddit
Damn dude, glad you're not dead!
Neonsharkattakk@reddit
Yep, got my first ebike in the summer of 2021, had a full face helmet by november cause I knew what was gonna come. Since ive actually went back down to a regular bike, safety glasses that hug my face and a neck warmer
Henri_Dupont@reddit
I have done this. I needed a heated faceshield when it got cold, and a breath diverter when it got really cold. Fogs up otherwise.
I finally decided it was just as well to wear a balaclava and some wraparound sunglasses. If I gap the glasses a bit they don't fog so bad. Also used some anti-fog juice that sort of worked.
I use a motorcycle helmet when it is really cold, they are warmer.
I really need something to protect my eyes in extreme cold (10F and lower) the wind is just biting.
michaelhannigan2@reddit
For me, yes.
Overseerer-Vault-101@reddit
I have recently taken to wearing a leather (sort of) motorbike jacket, cafe racer style with thick pads on the elbows but no armour. I wouldn't use it on a motor bike myself but it's perfect for creating a wind/water proof bubble of heat around my chest and a little extra padding if needed.
Plus_Boysenberry_844@reddit
How do you handle fogging face shields?
stephenmakesart@reddit
I use goggles. My eyes start watering if the temps are below 30 degrees.
Afraid-Produce-5107@reddit
I have been wearing a ski helmet on my bike in winter for years with the option of ski goggles and a Velcro mask over my mouth and nose. Now that I have switched to full face in the summer, I will also take the step for the winter, so it will be a downhill bicycle helmet that is as warm as possible, again optionally with ski goggles.
If you want to use a motorcycle helmet with a visor, make sure that it is a two-pane visor, e.g. Pinlock, which prevents fogging. Haha, I once put on a Uvex Boss 3000 (full-surface two-pane visor) while driving a sled and closed the visor as a test when pulling the sled uphill - it was only a little foggy at the very edge, I could see unhindered...)
Chemical-Brain-1203@reddit
I use a full face sedici strata with a pin lock system. It’s essential
MonzellRS@reddit
Full face all the time here
SillyCubensis@reddit
Almost everyone? The only reason "bike" helmets exist is because they're lighter and better ventilated than motorcycle helmets. A bike requirement because you're pedaling and working up a sweat. Most of the riders in this forum have class 2-3 bikes with throttles, basically weak electric motorcycles. No pedaling (unless you want), no sweat, might as well use a moto helmet.
Plus-Palpitation8024@reddit (OP)
I don't understand your "Almost everyone?" question lead-in. I agree with the rest of your comment.
PoisonMind@reddit
I have a mask with vent holes so my glasses don't fog up from my breath, but if you don't wear glasses, a balaclava is great for the cold.
Beneficial_Giraffe21@reddit
I wondered that too. I purchased a snowmobile full face helmet for this years winter season. Looking forward to a more comfortable ride for manitoba winters.
El_Guap@reddit
I wear a full face Scorpion EXO ST-1400 with pinlock and a Cardo. Also, a John Doe JD One full face… but I come from a Ducati riding back ground.
MountainRoll29@reddit
Sure, why not? I've used a ski helmet before. They're warmer than bike helmets.
Lemna24@reddit
I wear a full face helmet when it gets below a certain temperature, depending on where and how long I'm riding.
One problem though is fogging. I like to feel like I'm putting in some work on the bike, so I breathe heavier than if I were just riding a motorcycle (I assume - I've never actually rode one). Wearing glasses only makes it worse.
I tend to leave the face guard cracked and that helps. It's a balance between protecting my face from cold wind and visibility.
PathLongjumping440@reddit
I just came in from an ebike ride at 34F degrees with snow here and there. My clear shield I just switched to from my summer mirror shield in my full face helmet has anti fog coating and it is super! I still crack my shield. Get a shield with the antifog coating or the other shield that has a double shield type construction and it will make riding a lot better. I wear glasses too...I instantly go fog blind when I step in the house. My new snow pants, hoodie under my winter coat and new ski boots and gloves kept me nice and toasty. It was a great ride. I ride year round in northern New England.
sirsmokesalot403@reddit
I purchased a snowmobile helmet works awesome and has extra bits to add it or remove based on temp
Zealousideal_Tea3214@reddit
I do the same, full motorcycle helmet in the winter. As it gets cooler I pay attention to spots that feel colder and fix those… hardest one to fix is the crotch 😂 I hate a chilly crotch
mountebankofamerica@reddit
I do! Really really helps in the winter
XxBabblexX@reddit
Probably has something to do with fogging up. Idk I'm just guessing.
FtonKaren@reddit
I use ski goggles a toque and a tube that goes over my head for like a scarf type thing and that goes you know kind of like a burka (sp?) so it covers most of my head than the toque goes on top of that … everything is thin enough that my helmet goes on top … it gives me lots of options, but yeah full face plate would work too, this is just the workflow I’m used to when I cycle in the winter
bambuality@reddit
All year round I wear a full face
Microscopic_Botanist@reddit
I wear a full face Bell Qualifier motorcycle helmet all the time on my ebike. I don’t trust drivers and the size of vehicles terrify me if they were to hit me even at 20mph. I mean the front bumper and grill of most pickup trucks are almost at the same height as my head when I am sitting on my bike.
