Do Any Other Balkan Diaspora Communities Have Public City-Center National Celebrations?
Posted by GeneralVuk@reddit | AskBalkans | View on Reddit | 281 comments
The past two years I've accidentally stumbled into Albania's national independence day celebrations at Dundas Square, Toronto. This got me wondering do any other Balkan diasporas around the world do similar large, public national celebrations that take over a city center square or something similar?
FantasticQuartet@reddit
Some of them were wearing Great Albania maps while celebrating in Athens.
PasicT@reddit
I hope not, I find it deeply idiotic.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
I will have to think over farting in a public park. You can never know whether someone named Vuk is recording, and then post it online asking about other Balkan people if the ever farted in a public park.
ujore@reddit
It is.Even I,as an Albanian,feel ashamed.
Bilbolbu@reddit
Regarding Serbs, not that I know of but it wouldn't surprise me if they did.
Diaspora are a weird case in general regardless of ethnicity, they're rarely fully accepted by their host country population as equals but they're also culturally detached from their country of origin and often display a caricatured version of their ethnicity and for this reason even members of their own ethnicity back in their home countries don't want to be associated with them, so they're caught between two worlds, neither here nor there.
It's kinda sad when you actually think about it.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
3/4 of my relatives are diaspora now and all are mixed with locals. Their only worry is making more money, not acceptance.
Classic-Exit4189@reddit
Ive seen you guys do similar stuff in austria.

So true
Smekledorf1996@reddit
It really is
The Diaspora I grew up with from folklor have such a skewed perception of Serbia, especially the ones that have never been there
A few of them were surprised to find that most young people in Serbia didn’t really care about dancing

nothing screams patriotism like leaving your country because of how shit it is and then blocking traffic in another country to show how patriotic you are
Citaku357@reddit
Unfortunately we Albanians have perfected this false patriotism
Ha55aN1337@reddit
And when we point this out we usually get attacked by Albanians how shit our country is and that nobody would live here… like, then why are you here?!
Classic-Exit4189@reddit
Other balkaners do this as well but it only bothers you when albanians do it.
Ha55aN1337@reddit
You are kidding right?
The only difference is that other balkaners are now on the 2nd-3rd generation and it has normalised. If reddit existed in the 90s, you would hear A LOT of complaining about Serbians and Bosnians. You still do to some extent.
Albanians are just the “current trend”, but it was far worse in the 90s.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
Here in Albania it is the teenagers who enjoy parading around with cars while playing music. The flag day is just a good excuse. Police is detaining those kids who drifted for fun, though.
Classic-Exit4189@reddit
Im mostly talking about this subreddit. They act like that behaviour is unique to Albanians.
Ha55aN1337@reddit
Nah, it’s just more obvious with Albanians nowadays. Bosnians and Serbians were the same 30 years ago. But a lot of integration happened since then. I hope same will be true for Albanians in 30 years. Don’t sweat it.
Citaku357@reddit
I absolutely agree with you, if people don't like Slovenia or any other country, then they shouldn't move there in the first place. For me the most important thing for an immigrant is that they should try to integrate
Ha55aN1337@reddit
I agree. I actually love all the people who come here, learn the language and asimilate to a healthy degree (you don’t have to forget where you come from). It makes me happy to see a Wolt delivery guy who is clearly here less than a year and just found his first job try to speak to me politely in my language. Respect. Kudos to him. But moving here and then openly hating on the place? Just gtfo.
Bossbigoss@reddit
dont worry, . every "new democratic - still unstable country " has a same problem.... hillbilly patriotism and demanding respect from everyone around.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
Yeah, right. A bunch of teenagers took their parents' cars for a ride and gathered with other teenagers for "demanding respect" 😂 let the kids have their fun, as long as they don't drink they will be allright.
milosmisic89@reddit
Lol here in Serbia we kind of low key hate on the immigrants that go to live in Austria or Germany. Mostly because they are coming back for the summer or holidays all the time and then try to flex on everyone with their leasing cars.
Richard_Dick_Kickam@reddit
The worst diaspora people are those who will tell you to support the leading government.
Ive heard a granny talk about how Vučič is a god to serbs, and then someone jokingly asked her where she lives, to which she answered "in germany, i came here to visit my family".
Another one chimed in to say "best times were with Tito" and to continue the joke the same dude asked where she lived then, and she answered "in france."
Both grannies are in the village on every election to vote for the leading party, then leave to EU litterally next day.
OverallPhrase4623@reddit
Lol I was doing a summer job this year and an old kosovo serb who moved in Germany in the 90s was working there and he was talking all the time about how Vucic is the best thing to ever happen to Serbia.
Commercial_Grab1279@reddit
Ngl that should be illegal, if you dont live in the country and your vote will affect the lives of the people who ACTUALLY live there you should not be able to vote
Skywrathx9@reddit
Ah see you're taking sense, that's a big no no here when it comes to politics (many other things too)
Richard_Dick_Kickam@reddit
Im pretty sure its not legal, there are voting polls in the diaspora, but they dont matter that much so they resort to this. Many things that our government does are illegal, but who are you gonna complain to, the government?
PowerOfTheShihTzu@reddit

Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
Albanians have migrated toward North America since Ottoman period. Fewer are from recent migration. I have cousins who were born in Albania and do not want to have anything to do with Albania. Others who are born in the US have started displaying huge red and black flags even though they knew such flag existed until their 20s. But thanks for reminding us that our countries are shitholes and we can't feel "patriotic" because of our failed governments. Yet, you have no power to stop them celebrating. That is the beauty of western civilasitions. They let time do their thing and let everyone be happy at the mean time.
anemonaeae@reddit
People in the west don’t like this sorry. It’s insanely disrespectful. Blocking off Yonge and Dundas to wave your dumb flag does nothing but annoy everyone.
East-Raccoon135@reddit
This is not true. Nobody here gives a fuck. It’s only people in this sub that complain about this shit because of your own racism and prejudice.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
Not everyone is supposed to like our dumb flag. The beauty of west is also that you can't be that entitled to speak in the name of everyone. Some may enjoy it, some not. That is the beauty of west and democracy.

BeatnologicalMNE@reddit
100% on spot
Albanian_shqipe@reddit
Answering your question, no I don’t think any others do it. But I also want to jab at the miserable people who despise the gathering.
Typically all that happens is that the diaspora meet up with their nice cars, bring flags, dance and use some fireworks. How this is violent and disturbing I don’t know… Humans are sociable creatures and strive to be together. At the end of the day this is just another celebration.
BeatnologicalMNE@reddit
It does not matter it's not violent (so far noone said it's violent btw).
Albanian_shqipe@reddit
Then what’s the reason for the hate? No stores are being looted nor is the place being left littered.
BeatnologicalMNE@reddit
Where do you see hate? There is no hate, it's just disagreement - that is, majority of Balkan would never do something like this as it does not make sense in our mind to openly and in masses, celebrate your national day in a country to which you immigrated to. It's just silly (in our eyes), that's all.
There are multiple reasons for that, I'll just name a few:
1. People should integrate into culture/society they are immigrating to, not the other way around. Celebrating your national day openly, in public and in masses, just shows that you are not willing to integrate. I get it that someone is patriotic (and that's fine), but these things should be left for country of origin or celebrated in non public places.
2. Imagine a scenario where every single nationality would do this openly, let's say in Toronto. Now try to figure out how would normal life look like in that same city.
---
No hate towards Albanians whatsoever here btw, actually, utter respect, but these things are just silly and beyond cringe.
Albanian_shqipe@reddit
There is plenty of hate. Just take a look at the comments, these people despise such celebrations.
Celebrating the day doesn’t mean the people aren’t willing to integrate. Why do china-towns exist in the first place then? Shouldn’t the Chinese keep their tradition and culture in their country? This is just a way to express your heritage.
What does integration mean to you? Learning the language, values and culture of the country while providing to and improving the community around you. So if an individual adheres to this and spends one day out of 365 celebrating something personal to them, they are no longer integrated? There might as well not be a black history month in western nations since that’s not “integration”.
As for your second point. Imagine this, imagine that. It doesn’t happen so there’s no need to imagine. And even if it were to happen it would make life a more interesting place for some and for others it wouldn’t.
You seem reasonable, take at look at the other comments. This is literally at the end of the day a celebration that lasts for 4-6 hours. You either like it or don’t, but that is just subjective.
BeatnologicalMNE@reddit
Let me just connect to your sentence, pasting it below.
"You either like it or don’t, but that is just subjective."
Exactly, however, it seems like you do not want to accept that there are people who do not like it . Meanwhile you are also comparing this and asking questions about "Shouldn't Chinese also keep their tradition and culture in their country?" (To answer you directly, yes, they should imho!) while also stating below - meaning hey, double standards here.
This and other similar things are one of the main reasons why in big chunk of Europe domestic population can no longer be themselves while immigrants can. UK is great example of this. This should not be the case.
"As for your second point. Imagine this, imagine that. It doesn’t happen so there’s no need to imagine. "
---
In simple terms. I don't like it, majority of Balkans don't like it and wouldn't do it. You like it, kudos to you but we disagree here and that's it. Majority of Albanians in Albania don't like it either, but you kinda ignore that too. :D
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
I wouldn't be so sure if i were you. Such practice of feasting is common among diasporas, but no Albanian bothers to film Balkan peoples displaying their respective flags. But, so you know, there is a free world out there.
Alb1n9213@reddit
Large celebrations that are unannounced and get out of control are really cringe. Especially when it turns into insults, violence or even flag burning. That is offensive and unnecessary. In that point, I am with you.
Regarding the statement “Celebrating your national day openly, in public and in masses, just shows that you are not willing to integrate”. Integration does not mean giving up identity. People who live abroad should not have to forget where they come from. If a parade is announced and remains peaceful, then it should be completely fine. Celebrating one’s heritage is part of life, history and identity. Expecting someone to abandon their roots entirely is not integration, it is assimilation.
Relevant_Turn5493@reddit

East-Raccoon135@reddit
This is fairly common in America, not sure about other Balkans but in NYC loads of different immigrant groups have their own parades or celebrations. I assume because America is more of a country of immigrants than Western Europe.
NoScreen54@reddit
as an Albanian, even these people are despised by us (or at least by me and the people I have came in contact with)
I have lived abroad for many many years, never in my life had I done something like this. Yes, it's good to take pride and be patriot, but not showing off yourself like a buffoon. Let's say if other people were to migrate to Albania or Kosovo and show off their national pride like this, I don't think the reception would be positive. So hypocritical
It's not good to put an entire nation in the same box, but good Lord it's insanely cringe like this, and I hope one day we will wisen up and stop this nonsense. There are other and better alternatives to be patriotic instead of being barbaric.
harvestt77@reddit
What is wrong if some immigrants in Albania celebrate their home country, say for about 30 minutes each year? Wouldn't it be barbaric to hate on them? I see lots of inferiority in your post!
KittoKatsuBoyWonder@reddit
There are close to 200 nationalities around the world.
If all of them would have the right to have a 30 minute parade in your town centre once a year, locals would quickly find it tiresome.
NoScreen54@reddit
disturbance, noise pollution, holding up traffic? to each their own I guess, but my point still stands.
you know what would be better than this? a festival, musical festival where people gather around, dance to traditional music and enjoy themselves.
harvestt77@reddit
There are a million things better than this, but that doesn't qualify waving the flag as hypocrisy.
I would gladly support 30 minutes a year of noise, disturbance or traffic if I see some foreigners in Albania celebrating their own country! That's the least I can do for these people ...
NoScreen54@reddit
hmm, youre right actually.
but in terms of hypocrisy, I'm saying if other people were to migrate to Albania or Kosovo, and were to do the same thing, do you think it would recieve positive feedback among Albanians?
harvestt77@reddit
Maybe not, because we are what we are, but those diasporas would support the idea of foreigners celebrating their national day in Albania!
inkblowout4@reddit
Brother... the diaspora here are basically insufferable. It's not even patriotism at this point, it's full-on nationalism.
Albanian_shqipe@reddit

Prize_Management9936@reddit
Shittier the hole, bigger the patriotism
KittoKatsuBoyWonder@reddit
More like the shittier the whole, the more cringeworthy the patriotism.
The French, the Americans and the Japanese are notoriously patriotic. But it rarely looks like this sort of cringe fest.
They also stick to manifesting their patriotism in their own country, not in some other country’s downtowns.

Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
You are comparing apples to oranges. If Albanians had Caucesku, and most of their people within the state borders, people would forget what colors were in the flag.
ConsciousPoet254@reddit
It’s a valid comparison / argument. You’re only dismissing it because it blows yours up.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
It isn't. Caucesku is the first circle of purgatory compared to Hoxha. I am sure there were worse dictatorships than what we had, but not in Europe.
ConsciousPoet254@reddit

silenceoath@reddit
Because they want to conquer the country’s they are living in , they want to make thems selves feel superior and lower our spirits
ConsciousPoet254@reddit
I don’t think it has anything to do with that. IMO it’s because they have a huge inferiority complex and it’s pretty obvious from the outside.
silenceoath@reddit
Same thing bro , I live in Greece and 95% of Albans are barbarically who want to make us feel inferior, the other 5 are actually good people who work with honor
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
I am just curious how did you exctract such percentages. And what do you mean by " making someone feel inferior" 🤣
silenceoath@reddit
Dude , you laughing out proves my point , the newer generation of Albans are literally barbarians , they come in our country’s and they act like bosses , they act like ufc champions, plus Albania was never supposed to be an autonomous state , plus you guys like to steal history and are the most uneducated people with Turks . You and Turks like to steal so much history lol . Anyways , I know better than you because I see it . Very less of Albans are actually respectful , only the older ones with I met in Albania and people who respect the country and its history .

Why are Albanians everywhere forcing out this "Albanianism". If they are so clever and the best why don't they bring their doctorates and knowledge back to Kosovo/Albania and help their BELOVED ALBANIAN people with opening companies and laboratories. Why aren't they no.1 in Europe if they are so polite, smart and friendly and so proud of that? Of course half of them don't need criminal and showing up with new cars... What a mentality. The funniest thing for me was an on line argument with an Albanian lady hitting me with the "oldest nation in the Balkans" lines. I mean sure babe, ain't my first rodeo . Since 1990 we went thru Jesus & Bulgarians ,Zeta Serbia ,Daco Thracian Romanians, Hungarians literally making Slavic history , Ancient Macedonians and so on ...
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
Why does it matter which nation was first and which was later to you.
Wild-Dimension6232@reddit
It doesn't . You're missing the point. Because none of it is true. And hearing the same story for the 21st time just made me realize you don't need any brain to fall and spread myths about national history. If any of the above mentioned countries used half of the energy in improving their life as they did with make-believe historical facts I'm sure the Balkan peninsula would be a really nice place. Unfortunately feeling good and spreading false narrative is still way more important than actually improving your country or my country for what matters.
P.S. had the opportunity to have a few drinks after a boring company event with a Hungarian coworker. You want to hear what's the oldest language in Europe according to the guy?😀😀😀 So please, spare me from nationalist bullshit.

People in New York are obsessed with parades. During the mayoral debate this year they even asked the candidates what parade didn't exist, that they think should exist.
TinyAsianMachine@reddit
This is not a parade lol. They do the same in London.
Useful-Self4488@reddit
It's a Parade you have to submit an apply. Dont tell me otherwise.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
This.

pailhead011@reddit
This is a bunch of Albanians… in Toronto… celebrating Albania? Umm, why do they live in Canada if Albania is so awesome.
SweetUf@reddit
Why not Mercedes? Doesn't look legit.
Trick-Size-1522@reddit
So happy Serbs don’t do this 😂
Glittery_Marshmallow@reddit
Can you imagine the comments and the rage people in the Balkans would feel if the streets would be blocked like this by Nepal or Indian immingrants?
Massive-System-3954@reddit
no you are not always the victims, it‘s cringe no matter who does it, because the proudest ones always live abroad, no matter the nationality.
Glittery_Marshmallow@reddit
Huh? What victims?
Weary-Class-9353@reddit
🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷
TrickshotAlbo360@reddit
I’m Albanian and words can’t describe how cringe I find these parades
iillegally@reddit
It's a celebration of independence, as long as they're civil, not hurting anyone, and the government of Canada and the people don't have a problem with it, then there isn't any problem.
People in the west block the roads with demonstrations every week for random insignificant matters.
Sure, it might be a sign of inferiority complex, which stems from the oppression and discrimination of Albanian immigrants, or maybe it's just excessive patriotism.
But what I find more annoying is the bigotry I see here from some people in our dear neighboring countries.
And as for your question, Greece diaspora seems to do the same public celebrations.
Albanian_shqipe@reddit
Thank you bro, the hate is just crazy at the end of the day this is just the internet, irl I see many other ethnicities take part of Albanian Independence Day which just shows it just a nice gathering to have some fun.
Tuchelsunderwear@reddit
I feel that Albanians will be treated like Indians (for valid reasons I’ll admit)
Inevitable_Bear2476@reddit
The hate is completely valid. It's an illegal stop in a foreign country, waiving a flag from a country that isn't even on the same continent. Nice gathering, and extremely fun for emergency services.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
Major of New York wore Albanian atire every year and joined random Albanians for lunch.
NomativeDeterminism@reddit
The ex mayor of New York is the biggest con artist out there. Funny how Albanians cling on to him cuz he threw an eagle sign up a few times.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
Probably someone told him to make eagle gesture will make Albanians go crazy, and he tried so and it actually came out to be true 🤣
Albanian_shqipe@reddit
The day I hear the opinion of a serb and give 2 shits is when I’ll bury my grave.
anemonaeae@reddit
It’s not respectful.
NomativeDeterminism@reddit
If we’re being honest there are ways to go about celebrating our independence without looking like complete pricks.
Why not file for a permit to do a parade or something more formal in the city. Get local groups and business involved, traffic control, make it a safe environment for kids and families to enjoy.
I have been to the Greek Independence Day parade in Boston and that is what it looks like.
Having these events turn into situations of chaos, blocking traffic at random times is weird. And if we’re being honest the people doing it care more about showing off their expensive cars than Albanian independence.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
How are second hand cars expensive 🤣
TastyRancidLemons@reddit
I don't know, but while we're on the topic of Albanian diaspora, they have a similar celebration in Omonoia square here in Athens. I think this behaviour is unique to them and Turks, and perhaps to us Greeks in Astoria. I've never seen any other Balkaner or European do this abroad.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
I watched the video again. Seems like they are all teenagers.
Environmental-Sun291@reddit
I'd ban national holidays like this for all the diaspora.
OODNflow@reddit
Op patiently waiting Nov 28 to post this 🤣. If there was a problem the police would show up and stop them. Obviously better if the Albos don’t do this but it is what it is now try to have a life that doesn’t involve around keeping an eye out for Albanians.
Feels like a lot of ppl in this sub are somehow constantly running into Albanians and Albanian flags all over the world.
Refugee_InThisWorld@reddit
These parades are just kids borrowing their mom's car and having fun, but judging by the outrage of comments here, i think they fear Albanian teenagers will take over Canada as if such country belongs to Romania or N.Macedonia 🤣
silenceoath@reddit
Only Turks and Albans act barbaric like this , they want to feel superior and make others natives feel inferior
MasterofDads@reddit
“Natives”
CodExtension6180@reddit
natives?
silenceoath@reddit
Do not drive out of the conversation, Macedonia is Greek , Alexander is Greek, you live on stolen lands , Macedonia is Eastern Orthodox
panzgap@reddit
What are you talking about man
NietzscheIsGulty@reddit
What's your problem man? It is a free world. You dont like something? Take the other street.
I dont like Greeks who go somewhere and always open a Myjono Taverna. I dont come here and post it like a loser (assuming you are one).
I just dont go to eat there.
harrry1312@reddit
Your people are annoying and disturbing. If you like your country so much, go back and celebrate there.
First-Egg-713@reddit
Well at least our people never put other people im gas chambers lol. That would truly be disturbing…
And you can go fist yourself harry, i was born and raised in toronto. No one here has an issue with some albanians putting flags on their car and being in the street for 30 mins once a year. Go to toronto sub and ask.
anemonaeae@reddit
I live here and I know of plenty of people who take issue with it
NietzscheIsGulty@reddit
We wont ask you what we do . If you dont like Albanians, go back to your country.
harrry1312@reddit
I'm in MY country here in Austria. You and your people should go back to YOUR country. But wait... It isn't that nice, is it? It's better to exploit the social welfare system in my country.
NietzscheIsGulty@reddit
First of all, they are in Canada. Last time I checked, Canada is not under Austria. So, keep your lane.
Second, most of them are in THEIR country (as you are). They have citizenship So, it shows your judgment is wrong.
And lastly, I can see your logical thinking level from repeating the same old cliché argument that every uneducated alcoholic person repeats. Most of Albanians never take wellfare (they are not serbs, ah Austria has more serbians and they celebrate like Albanians when Serbia national team wins, yet that doesnt bother you).
Even if Albanians take wellfare, "your" government gives those (i doubt how much Austrian you are). It is not like Albanians steal from the bank. You can ask your government to stop it.
harrry1312@reddit
I'm sorry, I mixed two threads here, so may I do some bs here. I don't know anything about Albanians in Canada, so I don't judge about that. Just guessed it's the same like here. But that can't be, because it's way harder to come to Canada for all kind of Ex-Jugos. Austria, especially Vienna, is a melting pot for Ex-Jugoslawian refugees and immigrants. Most of them seems to be cool people, but their patriotism and the... let's say interpretation of our laws is a real problem here.
NietzscheIsGulty@reddit
All good buddy
FordFreeState@reddit
Yes. I know ex yugos do this in the us, especially Serbs. Greeks also do this too
anemonaeae@reddit
They shouldn’t do this. No one should do this. It’s so rude
shqipshqippp@reddit
so a post about diaspora celebrating a national holiday gets to be posted before the actual celebration itself on a sub about the balkans now? if you want to make this subreddit an serbian circlejerk go ahead but don’t phrase it as “askbalkans” by this point
Bossbigoss@reddit
if you are so proud of your heritage/country go back there , to work, to pay taxes, clean streets or at least write poetry in the native language
Iapetus404@reddit
Same also yesterday in Athnes. All roads downtown blocked by nationalist Albanians and same time they made us democracy leassons because Greece state dont let an Albanian ultanationalist enter to Greece....lol

Filipthehandsome@reddit
No, he meant Macedonia.
silenceoath@reddit
Buddy , your ain’t ready to open the history book yet .
Filipthehandsome@reddit
I can teach you history buddy. And by history I do not mean brainwashed Macedonian history.
silenceoath@reddit
lol , ancient Macedonia was always Greek , Alexander the Great had a Greek philosopher for a teacher ARISTOTLE , Ancient Macedonian is considered a dialect of Greek. Ancient Macedonia was a small kingdom located in northern Greece . Macedonia, ancient kingdom centred on the plain in the northeastern corner of the Greek peninsula, at the head of the Gulf of Thérmai. In the 4th century BCE it achieved hegemony over Greece and conquered lands as far east as the Indus River, establishing a short-lived empire that introduced the Hellenistic Age of ancient Greek civilization.
All my sources are from britannica , Wikipedia ,national geographic society and MIT . Lmao , i pity the uneducated people who downvote my comments , they live in their own dream while rejecting facts .
Filipthehandsome@reddit
Why are you making the argument as if someone claims that Macedonia today is the same as Macedonia 2-3000 years ago? No one is disputing that, even the hellenic statutes in Skopje have plaque that states that they are part of the hellenic history.
Nations as we understand them today are political construct as of 2-300 years ago (around the time of the French/American revolution(s).
You are making assumptions about people that are downvoting you just as you made an assumption about the person that you replied to. Such behavior is considered ignorant and I would go as far as to say that you are a simpleton.
You can only read documents and sources, which makes you literate, but in no way, shape or form makes you intelligent. From your comments I can only conclude that you’re incapable of grasping a nuanced or thorough argument.

Every balkan country does it and everywhere. As long you keep it respectfully and have permission nothing wrong with it! The only ones who are hating on this arr the immigrants that left in recent year for abroad, I have never seen such hateful people as them towards their own. They act more german/british… than the actual ones!

i_getitin@reddit
Most of you people hating on diaspora fail to understand the diasporic experience. Countries like Canada allow you to become “Canadian” while maintaining the identity of your birth country or your family’s heritage. Unlike America, there is not much pressure to conform, adapt and assimilate. It’s something Canadians take pride in considering it is a nation of immigrants.
This video is from Toronto and many cultures have similar street festivities to celebrate their heritage although they usually get city permits and do it in more appropriate locations. This is a main artery downtown so I would say this was selfish of them to do and an abuse of the tolerant society that Canada has been to immigrants.
Martha_Fockers@reddit
Buddy you need to get of Reddit America you have these for every type of culture and flavor of the world
New York has a parade every other week
Albania has a official city parade itself in New York they do one in Chicago aswell
https://youtu.be/4FOn5igw_18?si=BmDpcPtJDoY2QvxN
I know you think America is some bigoted shithole who hates everything and is some fat guy with a gun and his nipples out but the reality is there’s more immigrants in America than canadas entire population by 2x
i_getitin@reddit
Sorry I struggled to make out what the you are trying to say wince you seem not to believe in basic grammar. I wasn’t even being critical compared to other comments, if anything I was defending your ppl.

Irish have St.Patrick day. Of course they are a larger community and feast is vommervialised. But then Italians have their religion. Albanians have flag day and compensate their few numbers with noise.

I don't think so. It does happen during the World Cup, though.

This is far from common from majority of Balkan countries actually.

We have a official parade in New York
frn8@reddit
So the conspiracy that Albania controls AIPAC is real

Ex Yugoslavian people definitely do not and honestly, if we did, that would be shitty as hell.
You leave your country and instead of integrating into a new country/culture fully you decide to celebrate your country national day openly and in masses? What the fuck is up with that?
Filipthehandsome@reddit
Good question
