Look to see the indentation form the bottom of the can is “inside the lines” on the gasket

put a stinky piece of fish inside and close it, if you can't smell it anymore you're good 👍

The gasket having the can line pressed into it uniformly all the way around. If the gasket was super thin in one area that area would just look chalky/powdery and maybe the powder scratched away some but not indented like it should be; indicating the steel isn't pressing into it to create a seal like it should be in that spot.

In addition to little indentation in the gasket in some areas also look for indentation that runs to the outside edge of the gasket. So some lids to not pull down tight enough and the long sides of some ammo cans bow out too much. In the last year or two I have found it difficult to find good seals. Sometimes I find none.

Rural King had them on sale for $11 a few weeks ago but most were dusty and likely sat they since I went through their stock earlier in the year. Back in the last year when HF had their shelf full and about 8 more cartons of cans in the front of the store I when through the entire supply of likely 50 to 75 cans and only found about 3 to 5 I found just acceptable.

I have some that just “barely seal”, the indentation is on the very edge and the indicating desiccants have not turned… years later. You’re WAY too picky. Some of my cans from cabelas bow out much more than my harbor freight ones and they still seal.

One of the first six 50 cal cans I bought at Harbor Freight was not water tight. After that I started examining the seals before purchase. There is a lot of variation in "barely seals" so the one's I passed on may have been worse than your seal. Some may have been fine but I did not want to risk it especially if loading ammo loose in the can rather than leaving in the original boxes. Filling a can with lose ammo will push on the sides even more. Here is a picture of an even worse seal that I found at tonight at Harbor Freight. This seal is not even installed properly. It is folder over.

Look around the gasket to make sure you see a complete and uninterrupted impression in the gasket, make sure that there is sufficient material on each side of the impression to make a seal.
