Too often the films that deserve infamy are the ones no one’s seen or remembered.

I just rewatched The Avengers for the first time since 1998, so as to see if it’s as bad as I remember. Turns out, it’s far worse. The only action movie that tries to be ALL one-liners and quips. The TV show it’s based on had some restraint with that. It kind of bugs me how often some really big, popular film gets labeled the Worst Thing Ever when usually they’re mediocre at worst: truly deserving flicks get forgotten about too quickly to gain proper notoriety (kind of a catch-22, maybe?).

I know I've seen this film but can recall pretty much nilch about it.
Is it just bad bad because it fails on every level? Or is it bad because it tries to go for the 60s surrealism of the original show but falls down under the weight of 90s irony?

It’s bad because it thinks the whole 60s show was its own irony and copies only that. Plus it was obviously hacked to bits in the editing room.

Yeah some of it was really hard to follow and there were scenes in the trailer that weren’t in the film. It’s a real shame because the source material was so good.
Sadly it’s not got much of a cult following and I think an expanded ‘directors cut’ type thing is unlikely.

Steed and Peel in the show had some personality beyond flirting and quipping, yes. The film offers something a little like the kind of caricature you’ll get in a Family Guy cutaway.

The only thing I remember about this movie is that it was the ticket I bought to go see Dead Man on Campus.

I remember the teddy bears scene, and that's it.
Flimsy-Engine9722@reddit
that movie was a mess for real, cant believe people liked it

The only thing I remember is that the guy was at a gentleman only club and the lady walked in and they were all aghast.

I remember seeing it in theaters and being bored and confused the whole time.
But my teenage self still thought the inflatable balls they walked across the water in were kind of cool.

You’ll pay for that

I know we rented it and that I watched it, but I cannot recall anything past there being a weather control machine.

Of the non Bond films by Connery this is just a tad better than Laser Ass.
Kevin_LeStrange@reddit
Hey, Laser Ass had some lovely footage of the Petronas Towers.

The only movie I walked out on in my life. After the teddy bears. So shit.
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit (OP)
Considering how strangely short it is, that’s kind of impressive.

Same. We walked out and went to a coffee shop instead.

Ever see Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li? It's another "so bad it's forgettable" movie
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit (OP)
Yes. This is worse.

I saw this movie in theaters. Weirdly enough I've recently digitized some VHS tapes from the 80s with episodes of the original show recorded on it from late night tv.

Saw it in the theatres. Couldn’t tell you one thing about the movie. Very forgettable

How now, brown cow.

What major blockbuster did Connery turn down for this shite? Blunder of the century

i saw it in the theater…. snooozer. Tried to watch it during the pandemic, instant snoooze
Officialfish_hole@reddit
I really liked this movie and was in college. I actually saw it twice in the theater. I have no doubt that it's terrible and I don't ever want to rewatch it to ruin my illusion, but i really enjoyed it and thought it was fun and campy. I was really into weird stuff back then like 1950s horror movies so maybe that played a part in it
SpaceAdventures3D@reddit
Never saw it. The trailer looked terrible. Normally pop-culture action was my cup of tea, and I could tolerate a certain level of camp and bad, but this looked so bad that I skipped it.
VinylHighway@reddit
Saw it in theaters despite protest due to a friend's birthday. Laughed at the giant teddy bear costumes, and the rest sucked
omnes1lere@reddit
My best friend and I were the only two in the theater. Free refills on large popcorn and slurpees... we probably trashed the place worse than if it was packed. If only the movie was enough to keep our attention lol
TiaxRulesAll2024@reddit
The random fuck was so bad that I hexed wanted to see it again
Critical_Liz@reddit
I saw the series as a kid and loved it, so yeah, this was deeply disappointing.
dishwasher_mayhem@reddit
This movie was fucking awful. I was a manager at a drive in movie theater when it came out and it was the second of a double feature. People drove out. That didn't happen often.
