Both ramps closed on on Mount Eagle😳
This would be a bad day for your Jake brakes not work and need new brake pads

I don’t even touch my brakes going down monteagle.

It's really not that treacherous a descent if trucks will just take it slow but I guess they design these highways to the lowest intellectual quotient drivers.

I climbed down I-70 in a bus with Jakes and pressed my brake pedal exactly zero times and often had to press the gas a little bit to turn off the Jakes to gain speed

obsolete_broccoli@reddit

It’s great in a bus on Monteagle and Cabbage in Oregon. Set the Jakes to second position and the bus usually will maintain 50-55mph. Don’t have to do anything but steer at a nice comfortable pace.

KatieTSO@reddit

I set Jakes to high and geared down to 3 on the transmission (Allison automatic) and had to let off the Jakes by lightly applying the gas pedal to keep up 45 mph, the CMV speed limit coming down I-70 EB.

I never had any shows in Boulder so never messed with 70 😂

Absolutely this. I go through Monteagle frequently, and the most dangerous part by far is the other trucks flying down it at 70+ mph.

Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit

I run it every day, coming back empty to the yard going 75. Just stay out the way and you’ll be ok.

LOL exactly

I run that bitch eastbound at 75mph every day.

Years ago when it was built that road was a very dangerous decent. With modern tech it isn't so bad.

Perhaps.

Maybe only go 10 over instead of 20

Been like that since Tuesday morning. You’re going north aren’t you?
View on Reddit #72286574

x0EvilPikachu0x@reddit

He’s going east on 24. There’s no break check going west. Also, those signs are glitchy because I bet there was nothing wrong with the ramps, as usual
View on Reddit #72287329

You’re right which is worse. It’s been like that since last Wednesday.

It alternates regularly every week (I pass through 5 days a week every week). Im convinced its a bad sensor or something at this point

Monteagle TN?
View on Reddit #72285050

DirtyOldTrucker68@reddit (OP)

Yes heading east. It’s not bad . And the ramps were open. I may send the ramps used once or twice in 21 years.

DickWoodReddit@reddit

I run nashville to atlanta 24 to 75 a couple times a month. I've seen those ramps with fresh tracks many times in the past year.
View on Reddit #72294535

DirtyOldTrucker68@reddit (OP)

Wouldn’t surprise me. I probably should have phrased it better. Fresh track is one thing but I actually. I’ve only seen a truck in there maybe twice in 21 years.

Did you see the one about two months ago? He got veeeeery far up .

its Monteagle not Mount Eagle. i realize it mightve just been autocorrect but yeah the title said the wrong name.

I wouldn't know. I live in NY.. I'm just an actually truck driver thats seen and driven down real mountains before

True, true. All those <6000ft passes are pretty serious up there in Upstate.

I live in the Adirondack hills. I don't have the nerve to refer to anything east of the rockies as a mountain

Horrendous traffic engineering / highway infrastructure. Also bad legislature. Split speed limits causes cars to instinctively want to speed up when being overtaken by a truck and the local authorities do absolutely nothing about it despite it being illegal to do so.

Maybe it is the rabid homeless people walking on the freeway? Portland seems unbearably proud but I am not sure why.
View on Reddit #72313700

Tricky_Big_8774@reddit

Its a 6% grade eastbound.
View on Reddit #72288516

Cardinal_350@reddit

You don't even need good Jakes to just take an easy ride down Mont Eagle. If you fuck up on that hill your a dumbfuck
View on Reddit #72314410

Cold_Fail_1418@reddit

I guess that's some sort of a hill to a flatlander
View on Reddit #72289096

It’s the steepest interstate grade east of the Rockies…so yeah it’s a pretty big deal.

I don't mean anything by it dude really, I'm just saying if you've ever been out in the Pacific Northwest or driven down real mountains you would see why this little Hill is kind of laughable
View on Reddit #72289243

Prankishmanx21@reddit

Those mountains are tall because they're young geologically speaking. The Appalachian mountains are quite literally older than bones. They were around before trees with leaves or land based vertebrates evolved. Hundreds of millions of years before the dinosaurs and older than pretty much every mountain range except for the McDonald's in Australia.
View on Reddit #72306833

Tricky_Big_8774@reddit

It doesn't matter how big the mountains are if the roads go around them. Long grades aren't a problem if you control your speed from the very beginning and don't blow your brakes out. The winter weather on the west coast is the only thing that it has going for it to make it worse than the east coast roller coaster.
View on Reddit #72290459

Cold_Fail_1418@reddit

OK.
View on Reddit #72289069

DirtyOldTrucker68@reddit (OP)

To me mountains out west were pretty much easy mode as long as Jake’s worked. Start at the top in a low gear and just coast on down the mostly straight mountain in low gear. Even Donner as long as you drive it prob nn
View on Reddit #72295063

IIWRussellWayne@reddit

Folks get so worked up about grades on interstates. Drivers, do exactly what the old trucker said and you have nothing to worry about. I could understand if it was wintry conditions but even then, just do what you know you need to, aim high in steering, keep good following distance and you have almost nothing to fear…well, nothing that would be your fault. Fear causes overthinking, overthinking causes you to second guess yourself, second guessing yourself you to do the opposite of what you’ve been trained to do. Go slow, keep an eye on your speed, don’t forget the Jake’s and you’ll never have to use a ramp.
View on Reddit #72295553

tvieno@reddit

Exactly. The speed you are going when you hit the peak of the hill, is the speed you need to go down the hill at; you turn on the Jake, drop a gear and brake only when you exceed that speed by 5 mph. Or if you just come up to a downgrade, follow the speed limit signs for trucks by going 5 mph less than what the sign says, turn on the Jake, drop a gear, and brake when you hit the posted speed limit.

National-Answer-9792@reddit

Now with the four lane road,it's not much headed west, eastbound, with a good load on though, it can be a handful if you haven't been over it, or thought you were too cool to stop at the brake check. It's the damn traffic that really makes it a challenge. Just like Grapevine, they don't seem like much now with lots of room to negotiate the climb and the twisting downhill side with 500 hp engines and 13 and 18 spd transmissions, and engine brakes...imagine it if you can with a 10 spd and a 350 without jakes, or a 5x4 with a 290 and no power steering, hell, even after dark in that " hot rod Lincoln " and just one or two lanes in a few places, and one lane down, then you'd realize where the stories came from...the ones that don't have respect for the mountains, even the "tame " ones, are the ones that smoke their brakes, or can't hold the tight corners and crash land when they don't heed the warnings.
View on Reddit #72289615

SubarcticFarmer@reddit

If you ever get a chance in a POV, try US 41 over monteagle. The east side absolutely is where the stories must come from for that mountain. It's been 20 years but that was my impression anyway.

I’ve never had an issue where I needed to use or even think about using a runaway ramp but if you can’t slow down and you need it so you don’t kill anyone your moving truck will say the ramp was actually open after all. Be safe out there.
