Cmon we all had the cd roms. I even had the original floppies. Still use the email address 30 years later.
What did you use?
Compuserve? Prodigy?

3 inch floppy FTW

I just heard a story on the news recently that AOL just shutdown their last dial-up phone banks. Like in the last couple months. Apparently there were still subscribers in rural areas or something. But I’d like to think they were people who died 20 years ago without anyone noticing and are spooky skeletons staring at glowing CRT monitors.

Yup, September 30 of this year.

None of that AOL or CompuServe crap. Local ISP for Internet access and before that, BBSs to chat with and make new friends.

Or not from America.
HungryFinding7089@reddit
I'm not from America, and when boyf at the time (now hubby) got AOL there were more than a few howls of outrage from across the Atlantic such as "How are you not in America? It's AMERICA online!!"
Because it's sold in the UK!?!?!?

What did you use in your country? Im not familiar with most other countries.
I have friends in Canada that used Bell and Shaw I think at least for Isp's.

Probably EuropeOnline.

For Sweden we had several ISPs. Tele2, Algonet come to mind. For instant messaging I remember ICQ.

I still use my aol email address from 1997. It's a 5 character email address. Impossible to get now.

I remember when AOL was $4.95 per HOUR

In the late 90s I lived in the suburbs. It took so long to dial in. Then after high school, I moved closer to downtown and the dial up was an instant connection.
Btw, my AOL screen name was Ibogaine420. 🤪

I went from compuserve to eWorld (that was a weird one) to AOL
mudley801@reddit
I remember eWorld! 😃

It was certainly an interesting approach. I remember liking the interface, but I was also 12 lol. I think I only had it for like 6 months before it was discontinued.

We had the offbrand.
Then I had netzero cause I was broke.

I bounced around constantly chasing free trials and introductory offers. I think my last dial up service was MSN because they were running offers of some large value Best Buy gift card if you signed a two year contract. I don’t remember how much the card was, but it was enough that I was able to get a DVD/VCR combo in late spring of 2003
