I (81) wouldn't think that just a few years make that much of a difference. But my wife (85) just doesn't seem to know the same cultural stuff I know and it kind of makes me sad. Just now, we were talking about Wayans brothers films, and while she's never seen Blankman, she is familiar with it from seeing it at Blockbuster, but she has never heard of I'm Gonna Get You Sucka. She's definitely seen the Scary Movies and White Chicks though. Just kind of sad.
Except I already know the stuff she knows. However, she is very convincing at telling me that i should not burn down the chicken farm that has stolen a part of my land. Those out of town cunta who cut down my tree and fenced off a part of my property should suffer their transgressions, yet she is wise in her navigation of legalities. I shall take her advice.
I was born in 1980 and my husband was born in 1985. I definitely feel the 5-year age gap; I'm solidly Xennial and he's definitely Millennial. When we hang out with his friends, the movie, music, tv, and cultural references are all way off for me.
Also, he doesn't remember his childhood as anywhere near as analog as mine was; he never learned to use a typewriter, for instance. And I had to teach him how to play vinyl records without scratching my collection.
Maybe one of the biggest differences is in how we navigate. I learned to drive as a teenager and also travelled a lot in the pre-GPS era, so I'm very comfortable navigating with paper maps and reference points and finding my way around without a smartphone. Whereas he only got his driver's license in his late 20s, and only really started travelling in his 30s. He's totally lost without GPS or Google Maps, and half the time can't even get around our home city without consulting the internet.
We get along well and these are minor quirks rather than relationship deal breakers. But yeah, I definitely feel the difference.
Well my wife was a puzzle delivery driver in her youth, so she is comfortable driving around. It's just the cultural stuff. She's definity more digital than i am but because she was not well off during childhood, her tech was about as far behind the times as I am. So it is really just movies and TV that she seems to be lacking. Honestly it could be a bigger difference. It's just funny. Slight cultural shift in such a short period of time.
I think you're reading too much into the age gap and ignoring what could be cultural differences or just plain lack of interest. My wife is '81 and I've seen way more of the stuff you mention than she has. But I grew up in a black/mixed household and she thinks ranch is spicy.
Holy shit. That's a little weird. I doubt it is that much of a cultural difference since we are from two towns that touch each other. We're both from near Houston, but her family is from the Hill Country, and mine is a mix of dep south and cajun, but we're both just from outside the big city. Close enough that we'd both just say we're from Houston. The culture is the same. So the 4.5 year gap is the only major difference.
I honestly read it that way for the first few seconds. Granted, it's Thanksgiving and I'm four Hennessey shots deep. I was like goddamn gramps here knows his way around reddit
Maybe it depends on the household? I’m the eldest of 3 and my sisters are 1983 and 1988. Because of my influence, I guess, we’re fully aligned on all the cultural references.
This is a weird thing to judge someone on.
Even if you were born at the same exact second, it doesn't mean that your exposure to media will be the same. Boyfriend and I are 3 years apart, and there are media things I have experienced that he didn't, and vice-versa.
Not everything is due to age gap. Ive never seen those either (‘82). I was raised in a different part of the country + a more religiously strict family than my spouse. We are only 1 yr apart but have vastly different experiences based on those factors.
82 and 87. The only time it comes up is high school and college pop culture. I'll reference a movie or band from 1997 and she is clueless because she was 10. Things after about 2003 are fine and we both understand.
(81) married to an (87). Some cultural stuff overlaps, but stuff from my early childhood flies right over her head. She references memes and internet videos that were popular when she was in high school, but I was working at the time so I never saw them.
Opposite gap here. ‘81 and married to a ‘73. We used to joke about how many presidents were between us, but I never felt the age gap until I found out he never watched Reading Rainbow.
Yup, I’m a ‘79 kid and my wife is ‘84. So many things she doesn’t understand the references or remember certain historical events. I quote Airplane! quite often and she never got them until I made her watch it. The Jerk, too. She loved them both.
i read this and read that as age 81 and age 85 and first thought was wow! impressive! oldies on reddit- but maybe in the wrong reddit thread. lol now i feel ancient.
It’s not likely due to age considering the small gap and much more due to lack of caring. I can’t tell you how many people my age never bothered to see Star Wars. And I mean the classics. I’ve been on dates where ive had women say “never seen it, I played outside.” I have to try my best not to roll my eyes all the way out of my sockets and onto the floor
Yeah, there's totally cultural stuff that's much different. Some of the really meaningful movies from my high school career came out when she was like in Kindergarten. Some of my favorite bands/hits from the 90s, she hasn't even heard of them.
But, ya know, oh well. There's more important things.
I (‘78) am married to a millennial (‘87), and yes there are many differences, but still some similarities. He had not seen White Chicks so it was fun to watch him watch that movie
I am. I'm technically a GenX Xennial (born '79). My wife is a Millennial Xennial (born '82). Since we are close in age, we pretty much experienced the same Xennial stuff, maybe a slightly different perspective with some issues due to the 3 year difference.

I can feel you there. I quit drinking in August because of my gout, but I got some cochicine today, some I'm having some beers.

Went to a concert a few years back.
I went for the Offspring ( 25th anniversary of SMASH tour)... my girl knew them as...
... "don't they sing pretty fly for a white guy?"
She went for Simple plan, who i knew as...
" didn't they do a song for scooby doo or something?"
We have a 4 year age gap.
