What's for dinner, xennial edition
Posted by Ok_Chicken_325@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 126 comments
So my fellow Xennials, what'd you scrounge together for Thanksgiving dinner? It was all premade stuff for me. I bought a precooked turkey breast from Trader Joes. Stuffing, mashed potatoes and green bean casserole from a local restaurant/bakery. I made a sweet potato pie, but used store bought pie crust. It felt like a monumental task just heating it all up. I'm so over it. Isn't that enjoyable anymore.
I'm suffering soul crushing perimenopausal fatigue. Every day I find it hard just to put random stuff on a plate. The holidays just amplify that by 1,000. The magic is gone, and the struggle is real. My mom died on the 22'nd of last year. I can't believe I've spent two Thanksgivings already without her. Christmas might just be cheese and crackers.
To my fellow exhausted peeps, I see you and I feel you. <3
MungoJennie@reddit
My mom and I went to Denny’s. My grandpa died earlier this year, and last T-giving and Christmas were the last holidays we got to spend with him, so this year has been hard. Neither of us is really feeling it this year. Denny’s was surprisingly good, though.
stepdods@reddit
I went all out and did the whole damn thing, all from scratch, except for the pumpkin pie, which came from the fresh market. Will be dining out for the next several Thanksgivings. It was great, don’t get me wrong, but it was a lot of effort. Feel you on the perimenopausal fatigue, OP!!
LatinBotPointTwo@reddit
I had food poisoning and could only stomach some vegetable broth.
sorrymizzjackson@reddit
My husband is a turkey freak, so he handled all that. We had premade Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes from Sam’s club. Both were very good. The gravy was not very good though. I made a homemade dressing for the first time and it turned out amazing.
I also made ham for breakfast.
NastySnapper@reddit
Our family isn't into the whole turkey thing. I grilled some 20oz ribeye's, asparagus, mashed potatoes and baked some jalapeño cornbread. We also did cranberry sauce and an apple pie for dessert.
SaucyNSassy@reddit
We had Medival Chicken w/barley and spaghetti squash!
Banana Cream Pie for dessert
dyspnea@reddit
I had oatmeal because I sent the spouse and kids to the in-laws four states away. I get the weekend off and I’m cleaning the house tomorrow!
neckbeardsghost@reddit
I had some Thanksgiving tamales 🫔
Morriganx3@reddit
Oh hey, I made a turkey tamale pie! This was the first year in a really long time that I did all the cooking, so I decided to try something I’ve wanted to do for a while and make only recipes from Native American chefs.
So aside from the pie, I made roasted squash and sweet potato, a corn and bean casserole thing, a three sisters plus kale and sausage thing, boiled cornbread, and sweet potato rolls. Dessert was blueberry corn cobbler or pumpkin bread with berry compote and corn ice cream.
rajkaos@reddit
I love smoking a turkey every year, but it’s getting harder and harder to find the extra large rolling papers.
burgundyblue@reddit
We do themed Thanksgivings. This year we did a Hobbit Thanksgiving. Breakfast, 2nd breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner, supper. All smallish meals, charcuterie, pastries and such. Dinner was chicken pot pie. We also watched The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings (currently in the middle of Two Towers).
iputmytrustinyou@reddit
This sounds awesome! What themes have you had in the past?
burgundyblue@reddit
They are always around movies, so we can have marathons on the TV. We’ve done Mel Brooks, Marvel, Back to the Future, Pixar, John Hughes etc. my wife and I have been doing it for 15 years or so. This was the first year we fully committed with the food. We have an 11 year old, so we are trying to get a lot of fun themes in for him over the years.
_R_A_@reddit
I've been cooking Thanksgiving for my small family for the last several years we had a womping 6 people including our toddler and infant. Nevertheless, today we had
Basically, it's been a long day and I'm tired.
tes_chaussettes@reddit
My mom and I cooked up a full feast, did almost everything today. A turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts, pumpkin pie, all from scratch. But my mom just doesn't have the energy to do all that anymore, this year was really taxing for her even though I did a bunch too. We're gonna need to start doing things differently I think, me doing most of it and her just kicking back as my guest. I hate having to admit that she's getting old, as I know that she hates it too.
OP, I'm so sorry your mom isn't here anymore. I dread when I'll have to go through that loss. Glad you got easy, pre-made things and only did what you had the energy for. Holidays can be so hard. Christmas is the harder one for me and my weird little family.

Mom visiting so I had extra hands. Sister came with the kids and a family friend pooped in, fed 10, all in a NYC apartment! Full house and chaos like my childhood. Being Caribbean we do Turkey and Pork shoulder. Empanadas with beef and cabbage filling with Sofrito, potato salad, pastelon which is a casava casserole type dish with cheese topping and meat filling. Sister brought plain vegan mashed potatoes (kid has dairy issues, other one peanut ), stuffing with a recipe from THE damn Stove Top Box I knew it God damnit. 🤣 Calling it "her stuffing recipe". Yeah my little sister never learned to cook and lived in a big house with a beautiful kitchen that's never used. I've got pans soaking in water that I still need to tackle later.
SpookySchatzi@reddit
I love pooping in, whenever I can!
Mocosa@reddit
Will your family adopt me? My mouth is drooling thinking about a cassava casserole. Now I need to look up some recipes!
catsoncrack420@reddit
I grew up in NYC and was exposed to many foods. Some seem inconceivable to your skills at first until you try. Just take it step by step and make the recipe as is for new foods. Then put your twist on it.
OutcomeLegitimate618@reddit
I'm an only child and my step brother lives in Canada and is having a rough time of it. My parents are on a cruise, I'm alone. So, I bought a tray of enchiladas (yeah, the whole big family deal because they taste better than the regular TV dinner kind. I know I'll have leftovers and then still throw half away but hey, whatever. And I drank a non alcoholic beer and am currently watching House on Peacock. I can't say I don't relate to him a little. At least I don't do drugs and I'm done with alcohol. I just miss the taste of cold beer, yum. Goes great with Mexican food.
violetstrainj@reddit
I had to work today. My hubby made homemade chili and cornbread, and I threw an apple pie in the oven. It was pretty fricken amazing.
EricRShelton@reddit
I got up at 0400 and did a brisket on the smoker. Did a big group dinner with my coworkers, which was great because we each only made one or two things. Nice big feast, minimal cleanup.
Sublimecdh84@reddit
I’m at an adult rehab, and I had spaghetti and stuffing. I had my thanksgiving with my family last week where we had chicken, Mac and cheese.
I have two families it can get exhausting. I love them both.
Aggravating-Tax-2121@reddit
Wife and I are kind of leading the family; parents are getting too old to host holidays. Made a full traditional spread and I'm about ready to sleep my way into a light coma
Born_Key_6492@reddit
Full spread at our place, as well. Our teen kids pitch in to help, big time. Like, they make their own butter and did a bunch of the cleaning and shopping. They love having people over, so they are motivated to make it all happen. There’s no way that I would go through all that work, otherwise.
DrawTap88@reddit
I made a whole chicken for the first time in months. Stovetop. Mashed potatoes and gravy from a jar. Finished off with an Apple pie from Kroger’s I reheated in the microwave. There is so much more important stuff I’d rather spend my money on than Thanksgiving.
thakroz@reddit
I made spaghetti with Italian sausage. My BIL and sister made Jamaican jerk chicken, smashers, and Mac-n-cheese casserole.

Cooked the full thanskgiving spread: roasted turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, rolls, green beans (steamed with garlic), brussel sprouts (roasted with bacon), glazed pearl onions and cranberry sauce - all homemade. Plus, we had pumpkin pie, raisin pie, and chocolate walnut pie for dessert along with a quart of aged eggnog leftover from last year's holiday batch!

My whole family has caught some incredibly nasty cold. We scrounged for leftovers, and are delaying Thanksgiving until we can find our brains under all the mucus. Luckily everything will keep until then
My dad died a bit over two years ago. I still have my mom and siblings, they came here for Thanksgiving the first year without him rather than have to deal with the empty place where he should have been. I am so sorry for your loss, it is hard
Wak3upHicks@reddit
My usual. Eggs and oats for breakfast. And my usual meal prep for lunch and dinner . Bunch of veggies, potatoes, and ground turkey all thrown together in crock pot
Mocosa@reddit
I don’t know how you are able to eat the same thing every day. I’m envious, because I imagine it makes calorie tracking and general meal prep easier. It saves so much time and is so efficient, but just eating leftovers is a chore for me. By the third time I’m eating the same thing I want to throw it out a window.
Wak3upHicks@reddit
Forced myself to get over it, didn't happen overnight. I work 60 hour weeks, I care more about my little free time and efficiency around it over flavor

At my in laws. They made the traditional thanksgiving meal. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, squash, and a leg of lamb. There was only 6 of us for dinner. The food was good. My husband and I brought dessert. That was a pumpkin pie and an apple pie that we purchased at a local bakery because frankly we didn’t feel like making anything.

This is for OP and anyone else being hit by perimenopause: HRT has been my lifesaver. (I’m currently on an estradiol patch and oral progesterone at night because my insurance won’t pay for the combination patch, but it’s working quite well). I started perimenopause in my late thirties and tried to muscle through, but it was killing me emotionally/psychologically; my marriage was really suffering and I felt like a horrible mom to boot. Getting suicidal got me to open up to my gynecologist finally. And I’m so glad I listened. I’m on a low dose so I still have some hot flashes, forget a few words (but far fewer than I was) and definitely give fewer f*cks. But I no longer feel like I’m losing myself.

The whole nine yards. Everything homemade: turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, a wild rice and sausage dish, cranberries, a charcuterie board, rolls, stuffing, gravy, and a bowl of punch.
nuskit@reddit
Leftover Chipotle. We're both getting sick (102F fever for me, 100F for him), and we just looked at the turkey & went "yeah...no". It'll keep until the weekend when we hopefully feel better.
We're not looking forward to going into work tomorrow, but you know that if you call in sick on the Friday after Thanksgiving (or the Monday), everyone's like...suuuuuuure.

Just the two of us, but we hit the staples. A small turkey breast roast, a small pre-sliced ham, potatoes (real ones, not from flakes!), and most importantly, several pies.

We hosted 30 people today for Thanksgiving. It was a huge success 🙌 There was so much extra food it was ridiculous. Everyone had 5-6 to-go boxes and there was still food leftover.
I made a plate of ham, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes and deviled eggs for dinner. I told my boys we will be eating this food for the next 3 days. They promptly made a frozen pizza 🤷♀️
sleepy_unicorn40@reddit

Whole family was sick today except for me, so we stayed home. We have some new dietary restrictions in our home, and I don’t have any real recipes yet; so I got to play mystery box challenge. I was alone, and somehow, my phone got hacked. The hacker managed to disable my Sim card, and I couldn't call or text my family all day. Finally, I drove to the meadery in town, and the owner let me use her phone to call tech support. After an hour, I finally had service, and it turned out that the meadery was holding a free Thanksgiving meal. It's my first holiday without my ex, and I was so grateful to have somewhere to go. The food was amazing, too. I dont eat meat, really, and she had several delicious vegetarian options. It really turned my whole day around.

Smoked turkey (cooked with charcoal and oak), sweet potato casserole (from cans), mashed potatoes from Costco, premade cranberry sauce, green beans, rolls from Costco, pumpkin pie from Costco, “stuffing” (roasted on a sheet pan under the turkey).
I always make extra stuffing for leftovers. Friday morning is stuffing waffles day (or stuffles if you’re in a hurry). You reheat the stuffing in a waffle iron which gives it this amazing crispy, slightly sweet crust with a hot fluffy interior. Then you just load that up with whatever else you feel like.
Clevergirlphysicist@reddit
I lost my mom in 2021, also going through perimenopause. Even with Zoloft and HRT it can be hard. I had a frozen turkey breast that went in the oven with basically no prep/no thaw needed.. I mashed some potatoes (this was the hardest thing I did) and made stovetop stuffing from a box. A jar of Heinz turkey gravy. A store bought apple pie. Shared it with my husband and son and it was good.
Capn26@reddit
Mannnn…… we still do it. My wife got up and did a breakfast casserole and cinnamon rolls. Typical lunch at dads. My sister and I made the best decision 10 years ago to pick two holidays to spend together every year and two with our in laws. We stick with the exact same rotation every year- she hosts Thanksgiving and I host Christmas Eve. Since we each only host 1 holiday a year, we go all out and have it down to a science. They cook a full traditional spread with everything from scratch (including baking the bread for the stuffing), the turkey is fresh killed from the farm...my sister has even churned the butter for the cornbread in the past but didn't do that this year. My 8 year old made the pies for dessert from scratch with me assisting.

So sorry you are struggling, OP. I hope you are seeking counsel from your doctor as it sounds like a pretty extreme version of fatigue, and I’ve never heard of such a strong reaction from just aging.
I keep hearing about perimenopause symptoms but have been seemingly unscathed at nearly 44F?
I prepped the cranberry sauce and green bean casserole, ran six miles, and then fried a Turkey and did mashed potatoes, gravy, and stuffing for the family, plus a cranberry cinnamon simple syrup for cocktails.
Just got the kids to bed but if I’m tired it’s from too much pie. For what it’s worth the pie was from Costco but you can’t pass up a $5.99 pumpkin pie.
They basically paid me to eat it.
Please talk to your doctor so you can get to the root of whatever is causing your ills.
I wish you fast healing.
