hey guys i just want to get some opinions from you guys, ive made this fully battery powered ebike horn and wondering if people would buy it? :))
AcuMan_NYC@reddit
Get rid of the battery put a step down buck
xHakel@reddit (OP)
its meant to be a plug nd play, in the future i maybe will add a harness for ebikes or a buck down
wturber@reddit
But the battery adds one extra thing to keep charged. The step down that was suggested eliminates that issue. All of my e-bikes have a 12v step down so that I can run standard 12v auto lights, etc.
xHakel@reddit (OP)
yea but tbh this is the type of something you dont charge everyday, you just have it for weeks ot even months and still not every bike has one of those, and that really makes it avaible for everyone even normal bikes if youd want tk have something like that i think its just highly versatile
wturber@reddit
You called it an ebike horn. So that's the context of my counter-point. Ideally, there should be only one battery on an ebike that needs charging.
xHakel@reddit (OP)
yeah i guess you got a point but as i said not all ebikes have a 12v converter
wturber@reddit
A 12v downconverter costs about $15. What is the cost of four 18650 cells and the battery case? Probably in the same neighborhood.

This is one of those things thats cool for yourself, and you might sell a few, but you are up against folks going on Amazon and typing "battery powered bike horn"
xHakel@reddit (OP)
wouldnt you say that this is a bit more higher quality than the cheap amazon ones?
Dmanthirtyseven@reddit
Yes for sure! But you need to be able to overcome Amazon. This is clean for.a prototype. You need to find a source for professional looking cables and so forth, good photos and promotion. How much did it cost in time and parts to make?
xHakel@reddit (OP)
cost me abiut 8-10 pounds in parts and for all the soldering and stuff like that not sure how much time usually
wturber@reddit
And there's the thing. Time. And especially not being sure about it.
It is a fine idea but probably hard to turn into a profitable product if you are building/assembling on your own.
xHakel@reddit (OP)
not really that hard to make it profitable atleast in my opinion
wturber@reddit
You aren't even sure if people will buy it - per your original question. How can you be so sure that it would be profitable?
I don't mean to discourage you. But get some real numbers and start making estimates. Also, things that are fun as one-offs aren't necessarily fun when you've done it 1000 times or more.
xHakel@reddit (OP)
but im in the process of getting them manufactured in a factory so the quality is gonna be a bit better
Dmanthirtyseven@reddit
A quality horn with a long lasting battery. Would you try to sell it for 30?
xHakel@reddit (OP)
its basically that price already hah £29.50 but ive got a sale on rn!
HG1998@reddit
Why exactly should we buy yours instead of the ones already on the market?
xHakel@reddit (OP)
Honestly, the main reason is the power. Mine runs on a proper 12V battery pack, so the horn actually hits full strength. The ones I tried from Amazon were loud right next to you, but the sound dies off really fast once you’re a bit further away.
