Highly also recommend this video discussing all the scenes cut from the original screenplay and this followup after some deleted scenes were released. It explains much of the movie.

Neil’s wife thought he was having an affair, especially as Neil’s coworker on the later flight made it home. That’s why she is so relieved to meet Del.
The robber at the Braidwood Inn was the pizza delivery guy whom Del had tipped poorly.
The reason it took so long to get from St Louis to Chicago is that Del managed to drive by Chicago and went to Wisconsin. The cop that pulls them over is from Wisconsin (and also why they take a dairy truck back)
Del and Neil also shared a scene in a diner before going home where Del revealed how he inadvertently attaches himself to someone during the holidays after losing his wife.

OMG-Why the hell did they cut those scenes? I finally watched the movie start to finish last week and couldn’t figure out why Neil’s wife was so sullen or why it still took them so long to get home after they’d seen a sign that said Chicago was 100 miles away.

Unfortunately they pushed to have shorter movies at the time. Home video was less a revenue stream, so making more money in theaters was important. The movie being shorter meant more showings, especially when most theaters weren’t multiplexes.

What is crazy is that studios never throw that stuff out. That film exists somewhere. I don’t understand why they haven’t re-edited a new cut with the scenes restored. Even the new 4k version only has scenes from a VHS John Hughes’s family had. I’d pay a lot of money for that version.

I have the 4k Blu-ray. It has many of the deleted scenes on a separate disc in VHS quality. But the 3 hour cut does not exist.

While fans of Planes, Trains and Automobiles might hope to see the original three-hour version of the film somewhere, Paramount Pictures’ Bob Buchi told Vanity Fair that the footage has unfortunately been lost to time.

“In that era when the film was made, it was really commonplace within the industry to discard all the trims and outs—which is so unfortunate, but it was just the common practice,” Buchi admitted.

I’m not sure I buy that given Paramount saved film from a TV show, Star Trek TNG just a couple years later to such an extent they were able to release it in HD, even though it had been entirely edited on tape. But that’s what they say.

Thanks for posting this. The movie is an annual tradition for my family and I’m so glad to learn this.

When we watched this week we again verbally commented at both the burglar (“what are they odds they would just happen to get robbed that night- such bad luck!” and the final scene “why is she acting so weird, it’s only been a few days since he left, it’s not like a months long deployment!”

This answers both questions with complete clarity.

Love this movie. Love it even more now.

Just realized watching the other day that In the beginning, he forgets his gloves, and from there on out, it just gets increasingly worse and worse luck in every scene.....While getting funnier the whole way thru. It's truly a great movie that holds up.

I don't watch any movie annually. I have it on a rotation along with The Addams Family (the play), Spider-Man (the Oswald/Parker thanskgiving scene), and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. I've been trying to find a good 5th movie but none are quite hitting the mark.
