they all reeked of weed and you knew a hackey sack wasn't far when you saw one of these
elksm@reddit
I call them drug rags but that might be something my friend made up
DangerDelecto@reddit
The reason the drug rug went global
CDJMC@reddit
He wore it so well!
BasvanS@reddit
There are people who can wear a potato bag and pull it off.
As Luke Perry is illustrating here.
lamiller3333@reddit
Yes! My girlfriends and I were obsessed with 90210 and called them "Dylan Shirts." That's still how I think of them!
radioflea@reddit
All he needs is a hacky sack and some devil sticks.
nothofagusismymother@reddit
Anorak?
chaunie-chaunie@reddit
Poncho!
bwnsjajd@reddit
It's called a drug rug
SorryForPartying6T9@reddit
These are still alive and thriving in Southern California
esmerelda_b@reddit
I see them a fair amount in Northern California, too. Seems like there’s always someone selling them at the fair.
bwnsjajd@reddit
One of the dudes I served with in a covert paramilitary force rocked one that was a hidden tactical rig
AtFishCat@reddit
We have a number of head shops in the bay area that have clothing sections at the front of the store and bongs in the back.
New_Stats@reddit
They sell these at the Amish market near me in NJ. They also sell cowboy hats there. In New Jersey. The Amish don't really understand there's such a thing as regional culture vs American culture as a whole
Pretend-Tea86@reddit
There's actually a pretty robust horse scene in NJ, and Cowtown Rodeo in Salem County is in some way shape or form one of the longest-running rodeos in the US (and really fun if you're into rodeo type stuff or are keen on some novelty). Cowboy hats and NJ are not as diametrically opposed as one would think.
Also, cowboy hats (or rancher hats, as mine is) are really purpose built as fuck. They dont dangle in your face like a gardening hat, but they provide abundant shade. A half decent one will last you decades with minimal care, and if it fits right, you forget it's even there.
We went to a ranch this summer for vacation, and a lot of the kids working the ranch wore these hoodies with their sweatpants and cowboy boots and hats on their down time. So I think the Amish are actually on to something. (Also, wow do I miss those markets.)
New_Stats@reddit
Yep, I live here so I know what happens here. We have more horses than Kentucky
We don't wear cowboy hats. Although the guy who invented the cowboy hat was born in New Jersey. We still don't wear cowboy hats
SSquirrel76@reddit
Kentucky has 10x the number of horses that Jersey has. There are more horses per square mile but way less total
tgerz@reddit
Probably the closer you are to Humboldt the more likely. Or maybe further south, but I would think coastal towns mostly.
snuggleswithdemons@reddit
Definitely coastal towns off the 101 in Oregon as well. The Baja Hoodie is alive and well in Cascadia.
hmcfuego@reddit
Oh, these are right up front at Ray's in Central Oregon, too.
RogerClyneIsAGod2@reddit
I'd say beach towns on both coasts. I've seen them at our East Coast beach junk stores.
shewholaughslasts@reddit
tech_wookie@reddit
Went to high school in the Humboldt area and owned two of these.
needtoshave@reddit
Prevalent in the coastal areas around SF Bay Area. Pacifica down south to Monterey.
eternal_pegasus@reddit
They also sell them at any tourist trap in Mexico
phdinseagalogy@reddit
I feel like the only place you can buy them is at the fair! In the tent where they also have throwing stars, knives of dubious quality, pillbox hats made of sateen, and a variety of zippo lighters. All sold by a guy who believes 13 year olds when they say they won't tell their parents where the throwing stars and zippos came from!
Sierra_395@reddit
Do you call them a poncho?
After_Match_5165@reddit
Yep. We knew what ponchos were, most of us wore them a lot in high school, too, but we still always referred to these as ponchos anyway.
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
Ponchos are sleeveless and hoodless, basically a gunny sack with arm and head holes. If it has side panels, or also usually has a single-panel pocket/pouch on the front. If it does not, not. Think Clint Eastwood's "Man With No Name" in the Fistful Trilogy.
The Drug Rug is a hoodie that is either zip-up or open-front, usually with pockets, sometimes sewn on the inside. Think Bradley, the stoner kid in 5th period English, with the pooka shell necklace and "quirky hat*.
He is best known for his stinginess with his shitty Mexican stick weed, but only slightly less so for his mystifying ability to pull chicks that are astronomically out of his league! despite being slightly smarter than your average lawnmower and modeling his entire life and personality around hackeysack and quoting Rory Cochrane's Slater from Dazed and Confused.
tl;dr: that ain't no fuckin' poncho.
CourtAlert8679@reddit
lol, I’ve always called them Baja shirts but that has just been usurped by “Drug Rug.” Having grown up in Southern California in the ‘90s I’m ashamed of how familiar I am with these Bradley archetypes.
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
I was '80s and early '90s SoCal, so "Bradley" was named either Mike, Matt or Jason, like all of the rest of us and though Dazed and Confused" had yet to come out, those types were still doing "The Slater", though we called it 'The Spicoli". Cochrane just did a way better job than Penn at being that guy*.
CourtAlert8679@reddit
I assumed “Bradley” was a nod to Bradley Nowell, lol. I feel like the Bradley’s I knew in the mid ‘90s were all either named Nate and Shawn or were referred to by their last name or some dopey nickname
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
Oh, he was certainly the primary factor in choosing that name. I have a younger cousin that shares the moniker and was absolutely his school's "Bradley", along with his idiot partner-in-crime, laughably named Brock. Peak mid-'90s, as I see it. Though they are both in their early forties now, they're still burnout morons and though I cannot speak to Brock's ability to "score" as he has been married for quite some time now, Bradley is still swimming in punaynay [sic] that is, by all reckoning, way beyond his league.
CourtAlert8679@reddit
Have you seen the movie Mid 90’s? I am certain that teenage me would have died for Fuckshit. Thank god I grew out of that phase and have been married to an upstanding citizen for 20 years, lol.
MungoJennie@reddit
I spent way too many years with Bradley/Fuckshit.
CanoePickLocks@reddit
My name isn’t Bradley! And all of that was a long time ago!
Hilsam_Adent@reddit

This is so spot on it hurts. Shit, my friend who was this guy was actually Brad, too. So accurate it hurts.
Thereminz@reddit
yeah, but it is more poncho-like like a poncho hoodie hybrid
theMistersofCirce@reddit

nina-cat-33@reddit
Late 80s and early 90s SoCal we all wore them. Ponchos. Not to be confused with the classic Mexican Pancho.
Dude_1980@reddit
I have one from the early 90s that I still wear sometimes.
GlassJoe32@reddit
Unrelated but that video was hilarious.
cindergnelly@reddit
Baja was the only name that I knew them by.
FigureFourWoo@reddit
I always associate this thing with drugs. There was an athlete at my school who hit his head, got a concussion, and his entire personality changed. He quit sports, started smoking weed, and wore one of these every day.

Now they're sold online for $50+ which seems insane.

Same for the blankets. Ugh
willworkforwatches@reddit
I had the most glorious tiger print fleece blanket i bought on a sidewalk in San Felipe for like $5 bucks.
Lost it along the way sometime in the past 10-15 years. Not really sure how, it was a king size fleece blanket with a tiger print. Not hard to see… unless you’re dichromatic.
