An airline that doesn't exist landing in an airport that doesn't exist too, nostalgia
JaaacckONeill@reddit
Aviation stuff like this makes me wish I was born in the '60s or '70s.
Not to mention how much more accessible general aviation flying was back then.
maluket@reddit
You're romanticizing a fantasy.
Back then flying was super expensive and not as safe as today. Plus people could smoke inside the planes and all over the place.
There was no infotainment system at all, aircrafts were loud and used a lot of fuel.
MrMikeDelta@reddit
Well, you've sold me on it.
JaaacckONeill@reddit
That era was great for plane spotting airliners. It was also great if you wanted to get your own plane in general aviation, at least it was much better than it is today. That was what I was getting at
mxforest@reddit
People generally do this for Cars too. Almost everything you said holds for the same.
iuart@reddit
I dont think it was acessible. It was definitely more cool, also more dangerous
cheetuzz@reddit
in an airplane that currently can’t fly
xXCrazyDaneXx@reddit
*not allowed to fly.
morningdews123@reddit
So it can't?
peepay@reddit
It could, under different jurisdiction.
itszulutime@reddit
It may not fly
morningdews123@reddit
What's the use of "currently" then?
xXCrazyDaneXx@reddit
It can fly in a physical sense, just fuel her up and go the only thing stopping you from physically doing it are social norms.
Plane_Isopod_5128@reddit
If we’re being pedantic, “can’t fly legally” works.
Factorthetractor@reddit
And an aircraft retired from passenger service
Coreysurfer@reddit
With another prob retired going the opposite way )
Practical-Object-827@reddit
Probably retired.
coolmandude545@reddit
They said passenger service
miljon3@reddit
Think he meant completely retired since they are grounded.
Insaneclown271@reddit
Landing on a center line that doesn’t exist.
AnalBlaster700XL@reddit
In a territory that doesn’t exist.
phantomtails@reddit
On tires that definitely didn’t exist after that moment
HelloSlowly@reddit (OP)
Chequerboard approach into Kai Tak + MD11 being a bitch to flare/high final approach speed + Kai Tak crosswind and yet for me the scariest thing still has gotta be that GPWS call out
scremily@reddit
Cockpit footage from another flight.

LogExpert5281@reddit
Very rough? At Kai Tak?? That was a Kai Tak 7!!!
Icy_Huckleberry_8049@reddit
EVERY plane had a hard landing going into Kai Tak, it was the WORST airport to land at

bad bot
Appropriate-Count-64@reddit
That is… quite the ICAO code. Now I want to try landing an MD-11 there
Joki7991@reddit
A grass strip for crop dusters.
NotCook59@reddit
Bad bot. Who created a bot that thinks we need to be told all the airport identifiers? Just stop!
chemaster0016@reddit
Bad bot.
malcolmmonkey@reddit
Didn’t think that looked too bad 🙃
ThisSiteSuckssss@reddit
It was sloppy but the td was pretty ok
Hammer466@reddit
Same here, I was expecting a big main gear bounce with fuselage/wing flex, then the dreaded nose gear bounce, then a go around! This was just a little side drift and stayed out of the grass.
NorthEndD@reddit
Tire wear looked pretty balanced.
PessimisticBeliever@reddit
Surprised that 747 didn't start veering to the right, you know they were watching that like... "Oh Shit"
BabiesatemydingoNSW@reddit
That didn't look very rough to me, but he did definitely plant it on the runway. We've all seen worse from Ryanair.
JoeBagadonut@reddit
The centre line is more of a suggestion
Status_Fox_1474@reddit
You’ve heard the stories about Italian drivers, right?
whooo_me@reddit
They're more... guidelines.
Foreskinzola@reddit
Just like lanes in Naples.
graspedbythehusk@reddit
Just Hong Kong things.
reddsht@reddit
I mean its like on roads if you cross the line you move into the oncoming traffic, right?
virilixe@reddit
that centreline is there for moral support not practical application apparently.
Dry_Complaint_3569@reddit
You can still smell the brake dust
Final-War-1945@reddit
If you look closely, you can see that the 747 was rolling its eyes at the MD11's approach and landing. 747's were always known to be very judgemental.
Lyravus@reddit
You would be too if you were objectively the best looking one there.
No plane will ever look as good as a 744.
Kitsap9@reddit
A very rough landing, or a very normal landing at Kai Tac, back in the day?
Weak_Duty_8237@reddit
Average landing in geofs
NotCook59@reddit
That wasn’t that bad of a landing. I’ve done a lot worse!
CouchPotatoFamine@reddit
Rough? Ryanair makes that look like a ballerina landing on her toes.
Armageddon_71@reddit
Cleanest possible landing in Kai Tak lol
FirmOwl7086@reddit
Hey, if they walked away from it. It was a good landing. Draws might have a stain in them, but it will wash out.
NxPat@reddit
I was on one of the last Cathay flights into Kai Tak the last day before it closed. We ended up being stuck on the tarmac for a few hours because our flight had been delayed out of Tokyo and all the air stairs had already been transferred over to Chek Lap Kok.
BrisYamaha@reddit
Once upon a time Alitalia used to provide wine with crew meals. Probably unrelated.
NSW0lf@reddit
Pilot flying was on the centreline but got cramp in his right right leg passing minimums.
smaad@reddit
Despite its reputation the DC-10 and the MD-11 are my favorites commercial airplanes of all time with the 747-100, 737-100 (with the cigar shaped engine).
Single_Staff1831@reddit
YO.. THERES A TRANS WORLD FOR PLANES TOO😏🏳️⚧️
citizenwake@reddit
Ha! Such a good comment for such an undeserving audience lol
starkruzr@reddit
TWA! RIP, sigh.
AntiChris_666@reddit
There was a saying in Germany back then:
Why does the Pope kiss the ground every time he gets off a plane? Because he's flying Alitalia.
HelloSlowly@reddit (OP)
Chequerboard approach into Kai Tak + MD11 being a bitch to flare/high final approach speed + Kai Tak crosswind and yet for me the scariest thing still has gotta be that GPWS call out
Celebration_Dapper@reddit
Yes, that gusty left quartering crosswind - note the windsock by the PAPI lights from 0:08 to 0:11.
TkachukMitts@reddit
STABILIZER MOTION
plhought@reddit
You can Inhibit the GPWS....
Beahner@reddit
Exactly my thoughts. This has always been a trickier plane to land. And Kai Tek was always a trickier airport to land at. Put them together….
supernakamoto@reddit
Funnily enough, the smoothest landing I have ever experienced in my life was on an Alitalia flight. It was like landing on a cloud. It just just have been a perfect combination of weather conditions and pilot skill but over 20 years later it still sticks out in my memory.
Even-Analysis8223@reddit
DadKnightBegins@reddit
Shoot…that’s like Wednesday for Ryan Air.
-Fraccoon-@reddit
I mean. I’m no commercial pilot but, I’ve seen scarier looking landings than that. He missed the center line but it didn’t look super rough on the aircraft or anything. Good lookin landing to me!
victorinseattle@reddit
Shiny side up 👍
MaddingtonBear@reddit
Every time this video comes around again, I think to myself "runway's over there, mate"
VerStannen@reddit
Damn that right main was CLOSE to the grass!
Raid-Z3r0@reddit
What do you mean? That is an average Kai Tak landing.
RedditAppSucksRIFftw@reddit
Kai tell eh? Yea he gets a pass.
raidriar889@reddit
I’ve seen worse
kil0ran@reddit
There are two aviation regrets in my life - talking myself out of taking a Concorde retirement flight and either not flying into Kai Tak , or being under the final. The really annoying thing is I had an option to have Kai Tak as a stopover leg for getting DU and I took Singapore instead because it was cheaper.
YokozunaTerunofuji@reddit
Piano, piano
Original-Fig4214@reddit
They arrived alive in an MD11. That alone is a miracle.
BalzacTheGreat@reddit
Looked fine other than being off centerline.
Huge-Zone-6833@reddit
You can find also on youtube the cockpit view from this landing! Very intensive.

Standard MD11 landing

Solid three wire 🫡
AsstBalrog@reddit
F'in Kai Tak, still my favorite landing vids, right up there with Courchevel. (And maybe an honorable mention for Princess Juliana, esp when you add all those pinheads getting blown into the water on takeoff).
DullMind2023@reddit
That reminds me, the MD-11 used to be Pope Force One.
liamowi@reddit
When in doubt, get the hell out
Huffy_too@reddit
At least an engine didn't fall off.

Italian tune up!
