I always thought this was a metaphor for the things we chase (like a donkey being led by carrots on a stick) but never actually catch because they're not real (hence transparent).
I remember watching this premiere on TRL. There were a bunch of Alanis fans that were all excited to see her post-Jagged Little Pill video. They were left kind of speechless afterwards. When pressed for a reaction, one of them just said, "I don't think I'd want to sit on that subway seat after her."
Hehe, there was a shot in that music video where she sits on a yellow NYC subway seat with her bare butt, MTA issued a statement saying that riding NY subway naked is unhygienic and highly unadvisable.

I came to the comments for context and I’m still lost. Maybe more so 😂

Alanis sings “Thank you” a lot in this song, and it was posted on American Thanksgiving day.
JPMoney81@reddit
Using a Canadian Artist in an American Thanksgiving post after our Thanksgiving happened last month... some would call that... Ironic.

It’s like rai-yi-ain on your wedding day.
ohwowimonredditcool@reddit
it’s actually a healthy thing to have a larger one because as my mom said it can “take more beatings whether giving birth or what have you.”
JPMoney81@reddit
'What have you'
I can picture Hank Hill awkwardly saying this.

Post context: For 95% of the world's population not from the United States, apparently it's their thanks giving public holiday today.

I'm not trying to be snarky here, but we still make up the single largest demographic on Reddit.
jsusbidud@reddit
Yeah, but there's still a significant number of people that won't get this post without some context. A lot of people.
DHammer79@reddit
And OP used a Canadian to celebrate it.

As a kid, I thought the song said, "Thank you, Science." I used to sing that line after I watched Bill Nye the Science Guy. 😆

Loved the comment of Brooke Shields character Susan's grandma: that's one angry lady! Love Suddenly Susan.

This reminds me that I need to check the lyrics for this song. Every time it comes on, I'm like "what in the world is she saying, and why?"
Is she really saying "thank you India, thank you terror"? I'm finally going to learn!
Plane_Chance863@reddit
Also "how 'bout them transparent dangling carrots." (Does she mean icicles?)
Ourobius@reddit
Carats*
It's a reference to diamonds as a metaphor for material wealth
Plane_Chance863@reddit
Check the lyrics, it's not carats.

I thought she was talking about her boobs. I always thought she was too hard on herself for that.
Plane_Chance863@reddit
So I just looked it up, and apparently it refers to an elusive reward - a dangling carrot, but perhaps transparent because it isn't worthwhile maybe?
The boob theory is an interesting one but I hope it's not the case 😅
