Weak and exhausted, the charter jet can barely taxi up the runway. Out of options and fuel, there's nothing ATC can do to help at this point, as the much larger and well rested A380 closes in for the kill, remaining king of the tarmac

The funny part is, that the private jets pilots has probably newer seen the A380 behind it.
They know there is a "heavy" behind it because the traffic controller tolled them on the radio, but onless they actually past the A380 on their way, the A380 is in their blindspot.
vfrdrvr@reddit
That was my thought. I can easily imagine the bizjet crew having no clue what’s going on behind them. They’ll turn on a taxiway and one will look back and go “shiiiiiiiiit. We gotta get rear view mirrors for this thing.”
mz3prs@reddit
He’s way to close, I would have brake checked him, but I’m from Florida

ryguymcsly@reddit
Why doesn’t the larger plane simply eat the smaller one?
AspiringMurse96@reddit
The A380 is like a whale-shark. It filter feeds on much smaller prey, such as Cessna 172 and other smaller general aviation aircraft.
Sea-Bat@reddit
The A380 was already fed this morning, for safety.
AspiringMurse96@reddit
They have such tall tail sections, I believe they have more relative control surface area than a 747-800. I remember seeing a tail sticking up prominently from a terminal on the other side of YVR, it was an A380.
Gullible-Order3048@reddit
I remember years ago I went skydiving in Cairns, AUS and the company operated out of the international airport.

lol thank you for this... I was wondering when is the designation "heavy" used? I assume there are criteria that dictate its use? Is there a certain type of aircraft that usually get that designation? ... or those that would never get that designation?
wyomingTFknott@reddit
747s get Heavy, A380s get Super. Cessnas get jokes.
that_dutch_dude@reddit
propwash is no joke
robbak@reddit
From skywatch.ai
And it is about how dangerous the wake turbulence behind the aircraft is, and how badly the plane would be to the wake.
AreThree@reddit
thank you, this is interesting because looking and asking elsewhere (ages ago) led to the answer being that the aircraft with the "heavy" designation was in a time crunch or a hurry, which never quite made sense to me and is why I asked again in here.

I am not sure if it is a function of size but there is something special about the feel of the ride on the A380. It has a nicer feel or sensation that even the 747 could never deliver. A bit like how boats over a certain length don't pitch much in certain seas.
Zoppello@reddit
While I mostly agree, moderate turbulence on it feels so bad. I am guessing it takes worst conditions to destabilize it, but when it does the drops feel really long, almost as if the aircraft takes longer to recover

A pilot I knew once told me a story of taxiing a light aircraft and nearly being run over by a DC-10. He said it got closer and closer behind him. He spoke to ATC and asked if the -10 behind him was aware he was there, and a moment later saw the -10’s nose go down as the pilot slammed on the brakes. Presumably many gin-and-tonics were spilled on board the 10.

There was a similar thread about the 380 on one of the av subs, and one of the usual comment chains begin about the 747 being better and the 380 is so ugly and blah blah blah.
This was during the MAX scandal, and someone mentioned how Boeing have kinda got down the shitter.

It’s still a fucking awful 24 hours if you’re in economy; gets harder every time. I’ve spent cumulatively 6+ weeks on these bad boys.
If you fly business, there is an actual bar you can sit at and sip expensive malts out of crystal glass and sit at a table and look out the window, chatting to people. It’s surreal.
If you fly first, you get your own suite and an actual shower. On a plane!?
Unfortunately, post-COVID, the prices have exploded. Along with the addition of Premium Economy, which has furthered the price between eco and business, it’s basically prohibitively expensive unless you have a lot of disposable income. Well, at least on Emirates.
