What are your top three memorable music videos?
Posted by pookiebelle@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 257 comments
I'll go first.
-
Weapon of Choice - Fatboy Slim It was such a surreal experience. What is this insane choreography? And why is Christopher Walken here??
-
The Rain - Missy Elliott The image of Missy in that crazy trash bag blow up suit is forever emblazoned on my mind. Also the green track suit 💚
-
Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai This video blew my mind. I think about it any time I hear the song.
fuzzycuffs@reddit
Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Wax - California
The Pharcyde - Drop
It's almost like Spike Jonze is the greatest music video director of all time
Kellzy1212@reddit
Everyone forgets the Wax video. I remember watching it on pop up video.
pookiebelle@reddit (OP)
Spike Jonze is a genius.
doyoulikemyladysuit@reddit
Weapon of Choice - Fat Boy Slim
Three Little Pigs - Green Jelly
Days Go By - Dirty Vegas
BirdBrain_99@reddit
Upvote for Green Jelly reference
doyoulikemyladysuit@reddit
Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel was cool and all, but this was def the best claymation music video ever. Obvi.
Kellzy1212@reddit
Alice In Chains- I stay away is pretty good too. Definitely creepy.
MikeyLikesItFast@reddit
https://i.redd.it/nbtwdopy2n3g1.gif
This is the only Days Go By video I remember.
doyoulikemyladysuit@reddit
How do you not recall break dancing for love?!
MikeyLikesItFast@reddit
Yeah, I had to look it up. I vaguely remembered it, but it hasn't been taking up head space.
Fatboy Slim’s Praise You, on the other hand...
doyoulikemyladysuit@reddit
Praise You was also amazing. God I miss the effort that was put into music videos back in the day.
Gravy_Sommelier@reddit
Did that guy from the Days Go By video ever reunite with his lady?
doyoulikemyladysuit@reddit
Good question. I would like to think so. Or found one that can appreciate break dancing love!!!!
agentmkultra666@reddit
Days Go By is so beautiful and heart wrenching, I love it

SoupIsNotAMeal@reddit

kellyk311@reddit

pi_guy@reddit
Yes! Chris Cunningham and Aphex Twin made some crazy music videos
DasKittySmoosh@reddit
I'll never forget Cunningham's Rubber Johnny
laziestmarxist@reddit
I still remember watching the "Rock DJ" video on TRL and the looks of shock and confusion in the studio when they cut back to Carson Daly and the live audience (I'm honestly still surprised to this day that Robbie Williams never hit it big here)
The Spice Girls video for "Wanna Be" was genuinely an experience. It wasn't a special premiere like other music videos it just hit the MTV rotation at midnight one night and it felt like seeing something momentous happening while the rest of the world slept
Also this was later, in the 2010s, but one late night in the last era before MTV stopped airing music video blocks my friend and I were getting blazed together and when we caught the music video for "I Feel Better"I Feel Better"" by Hot Chip he left the room just before it got weird and when he came back I literally said "I'm so glad you're here I thought I was hallucinating" because that video is legitimately so strange. Peter Serafinowicz is a mad genius.
antsam9@reddit
The first music video I remember was Rhcp Give it Away now. I wasnt even in kindergarten yet.
MJ's Thriller is iconic, I remember my neighbor had a VHS with the making of.
For some reason, Vanessa Carlton cruising around town on a piano comes to mind.
CherryBombO_O@reddit
Don't Come Around Here No More - Tom Petty
Cool - Gwen Stefani
Again - Lenny Kravitz

geriatricxennial@reddit
First Day of Spring - The Ghandarvas
Waterfalls - TLC
Just - Radiohead
So many on here people have listed makes me miss Much Music of the '90s.... where did we go wrong?!
GenghisConnieChung@reddit
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find ‘Just’. Such a great video.
PaperboysDitty98@reddit
At the time, Last Dance with Mary Jane was quite the controversial music video
PaperboysDitty98@reddit
Thriller
Take On Me
Like A Prayer
Haemwich@reddit
Many heavy hitters already mentioned. Here's some I remember vividly for being really out there.
Kenna - Hell Bent Short film MORE trimmed down with the track laid on top. There's at least one other version of this video
Blur - Coffee and TV
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Other Side
Think_Heat8349@reddit
I said Hell Bent before seeing your comment!
I searched the internet for YEARS for the video. Finally found it ~ ten years ago, was so thankful to finally see it wasn’t a dream. Surreal how accurately it predicted our future.
freezingprocess@reddit
Just - Radiohead
I Want Your Soul - Aphex Twin
Without Me -Eminem
WeakCalligrapher336@reddit
Think_Heat8349@reddit
Wicked Game!! Yesssss! The they used that in Family Man, too. That video lives on forever in my mind.
“Everyone… loves someone….”
FajitaTits@reddit
Sabotage, Take on Me, and for some reason, that Crash Test Dummies song
terententen@reddit
That Crash Test Dummies video is up there for sure.
Think_Heat8349@reddit
Crash Test Dummies video. Weird Al’s version, too.
Both brilliant works!
Metzger4Sheriff@reddit
Whenever the video for Virtual Insanity came on MTV, my sister and I would call each other and just start jamming out.
Re: Weapon of Choice, Christopher Walken grew up taking dance classes until he became an actor, and somehow Spike Jonze found out he could dance and got the idea to put him in the video. Christopher Walken liked the idea bc he never got his dancing on film even though he had so much training.
One more to add: Buddy Holly. This video is so fun and I love it so much. Anytime I need to say something isn't/wasn't good, it automatically comes out "Not so good, Al".
Think_Heat8349@reddit
Buddy Holly came pre-installed on our Windows PC. I am immediately transported back to middle school and my dad’s computer desk whenever I hear that song.
Gravy_Sommelier@reddit
And then when Jonze found out that Walken could also fly, he incorporated that into the video too.
Metzger4Sheriff@reddit
Hahah-- there's commentary he did where he's like "I have to admit, that's not me". I know he means that's not him in the harness, but it really, really sounds like he's saying someone else had to be brought in to actually fly.
GhostKingHoney@reddit
Prodigy ~ Smack My Bitch Up
Michael Jackson ~ Black and White
Guns & Roses ~ November Rain
Think_Heat8349@reddit
OMG, Black or White was EPIC. That montage at the end? Chef’s kiss.
Spurt_reynolds_@reddit
I was waiting for someone to mention smack my bitch up. Great video!
Think_Heat8349@reddit
Kenna- Hellbent most people probably don’t know this one. They took a short film (amazing! Was nominated for an Academy Award!), that they put to their song. Take a minute and watch. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3xlfp
MJ- Thriller
Weird Al- White & Nerdy 🤣
WendyPortledge@reddit

the tyler dna is way more flattering to women!
Competitive_Ant_472@reddit
Oh my god no, so wrong
Powermac8500@reddit
I saw an ad for Alicia Silverstone’s tv show, and made an involuntary noise. I apologize for nothing. Anyway, my son said who? So I made him watch Clueless and those videos.
ConcreteKeys@reddit
Those old school girls/women weren't just pretty, they were cool. Everything is about being hypersexual now and it's so played out and boring when they all are doing the same act.
C_Kawalsky@reddit
1979 had me convinced that I lived back then, that I'd gotten killed in a gas station robbery, then reincarnated in 1983. That music video inspired PTSD of something that never happened.
Logical_Two5639@reddit
no cable growing up, but i was obsessed with music videos, especially the bizarre ones. i compensated by begging my friends to describe them scene by scene, in great detail--in particular, "Black Hole Sun" and "Last Dance With Mary Jane."
i also have an indelible memory of seeing Smashing Pumpkins "Tonight, Tonight" at the end of band practice. (Practice was last period of the day, and our band director let us have the classroom TV on while we waited for dismissal.) it's the origin story of my adolescent Smashing Pumpkins obsession.
CommentMundane@reddit
Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana California Love - Tupac
blue_suavitel@reddit
1000000% on the Peter Gabriel. Who starts out a video with sperm?!

Pretty sure that song is about Pete's dick.
SoupIsNotAMeal@reddit
Seems likely
SoupIsNotAMeal@reddit
LOL I dont remember that but I remember being entertained by the dancing turkeys the end
SweetPrism@reddit
Nick Parks worked on that video (the guy who created Wallace and Gromit). That song AND video are incredible: soft woodwinds, then BLAM! Horn section!
pleasebequiet@reddit
These four all came to my mind at the same time:
Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity Fatboy Slim - Weapon of Choice Pearl Jam - Do the Evolution Radiohead - Paranoid Android
trinicron@reddit
Mother 93 live - Danzig.
Sex prison - Tool.
Stranger - guns n roses.
Honorific mention: Freedom - RATM
Ok-Concert-6475@reddit
The best ones have already been listed, but I want to give an honorable mention to Uncharted by Sara Bareilles. The idea of an artist calling up a bunch of their singer/musician friends and asking them to lip sync to your song for a video is pretty cool and original.
kindnessoffensive@reddit
For me, it's: Missy Elliott - The Rain, Alanis Morrisette - Ironic, and Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Special mention of Mariah Carey - Honey
cellrdoor2@reddit

1- Windowlicker - Aphex Twin, directed by Chris Cunningham. Watched it 25 years ago for my first time (not even a fan of Aphex Twin, just Chris Cunningham's weird shit) and it just stuck with me and haunted me ever since. Chris Cunningham's mind is a scary place.
Weapon of Choice - Fatboy Slim, directed by Spike Jonze. We all know why. Nothing short of brilliance and whimsy.
Knights of Cydonia - Muse, directed by Joseph Kahn. This music video could've been turned into a futuristic sci-fi western feature film and I'd watch it. Love everything about it.

Aerosmith's Jaded. I looooove that video. Still leave "find the forest" messages on the family bathroom mirror. XD
Sabotage, of course.
Ana's Song (Open Fire) by Silverchair. That one spoke right to my soul back in 99, so much so I can't watch it today without feeling some sort of way.
ShylockGotRobbed@reddit
You Might Think - The Cars. Baby's Got Back - Sir Mix-a-Lot (as long as it was after 10 PM) Black and White - Michael Jackson
Garf_artfunkle@reddit
If Michel Gondry directed it, it was probably memorable as heck
eg. Let Forever Be - Chemical Brothers, Everlong - Foo Fighters, Fell In Love With A Girl - White Stripes

Cibo Mato - Sugar Water
Björk - It’s Oh So Quiet
agentmkultra666@reddit
The Cibo Matto video is one of my faves too! Made by Michel Gondry, who did a bunch of Bjork videos and just a bunch of other really incredible music videos in general.
irate_alien@reddit
Gondry is amazing. Everything from Homogenic
pookiebelle@reddit (OP)
That cat video was awesome.
agentmkultra666@reddit
Triumph of a Heart!
sunkistandsudafed3@reddit
Can't believe I have never seen that video before!
punkindle@reddit
You all probably never saw these, but the (NSFW, very controversial) NIN videos from Broken, one of which showed a man being tortured and cut and drilled and grinded up until he was a pile of hamburger. Another was the uncensored version of Closer. Don't look these videos up. They haunt me.
another that you should actually go look up, is Aphex Twin - Rubber Johnny
Chade_X@reddit
Thriller - Michael Jackson
You Might Think - The Cars
You Could Be Mine - Guns N Roses
S1nnah2@reddit
Thriller
Sabotage
Virtual insanity
agentmkultra666@reddit
All the ones you mentioned are sooo goood!
I have a billion favorite videos but here’s just a few off the top of my head:
BigDaddyUKW@reddit
Nuthin' But A "G" Thang, November Rain, and Land Of Confusion. Shout outs to the Aerosmith videos with Alicia and Liv, as well as Thriller and anything by Weird Al. I assume there are others who had a hard time with this list? I mean, we are the MTV generation after all.

Enge712@reddit
Genesis - land of confusion
Green Jello- three little pigs
Tom petty- free falling
Rynoman@reddit
Land of Confusion is not getting enough love in this thread. That video freaked me out as a kid, but when DC Follies came out - my stepmom loved that show - it gradually clicked. Still relevant today, just update the puppets.
thotuthot@reddit
2 & #3 instantly popped in my head when scrolling!
PiffWiffler@reddit
1) Thriller - Michael Jackson
Arguably the most famous music video of all time. It's basically a movie. And Vincent Price!!
2) Star Guitar - Chemical Brothers
Every sound has a visual representation on screen. Taken from the point of view of someone looking through a passenger train window.
3) Land of Confusion - Genesis
The video uses "Spitting Image" puppets and for some reason it's permanently burned in my memory.
TijayesPJs443@reddit
-Deee-lite “Groove is in the Heart”
-Daft Punk “Around the World”
-Eric Prydz “Call on me”
omnes1lere@reddit
Pearljam - Do the Evolution
I don't even like pearljam but that may be the greatest music video ever.

Bibblegead1412@reddit
Thriller- Michael Jackson, Sledgehammer-Peter Gabriel, Land of Confusion- Genesis
UTALR1@reddit
Metallica- One - stayed up late to watch the premiere, the greatest metal song/video ever. Simple, bleak & brutally effective. Guns N Roses - November Rain - band that could have been my generations Led zep, stones. This is them at their peak. In skill & decadence. The Bangles- Walk Like an Egyptian - 9 yr me was forever changed upon witnessing the incomparable beaty of Susanna Hoffs. Those looks, that voice, forget about it.

I only know about Jamiroquai because when MTV had the Buffy cast do a Videos That Don't Suck countdown, Charisma chose Virtual Insanity.

Sorrow- Bad Religion
And my other two picks have been done to death:

whattheduck02@reddit
I'm giving you four choices because I can't decide. No particular order:
whattheduck02@reddit
OHH runners-up:
Grouchy-Reflection97@reddit
1. 'Now That We've Found Love' - Heavy D & The Boys
(everyone is in very squeaky looking raincoats, with one dancer in a see-through plastic jumpsuit, wearing only his boxers and socks underneath. It's not even raining. I love that video, as it's better than Prozac)
2. 'Rhythm Nation' - Janet Jackson
(It's a black & white Orwellian dystopia. Everyone is sad, and they live in a factory, apparently, but don't worry. Janet Jackson is here, and she has her own paramilitary group. They're going to fix everything via the medium of aggressive shoulder-thrusty dance moves. I thought it was the coolest thing ever when it first came out, and it's still amazing)
(Absolutely stunning video, with Kendrick flying around like a mad lad. The cute little smile he does after he's 'shot' makes me do a girly squeal every time, lol)
Bonus honourable mentions
Tobe Nwigwe and Busta Rhymes, as every video they do is fantastic.
Tobe for stunning visuals and choreography. Every video is like a mini musical/ballet. My favourite is 'Destruction'.
Busta Rhymes for being a very funny dude, with every video being extremely silly.
Oooh, also T Pain, as he's very silly too (his latest video for 'Club Husband' is hilarious)
eggs_erroneous@reddit
"Rock the Cradle of Love" by Billy Idol was a big deal to me as a young man. During that time, my body was changing in ways that I didn't fully understand at the time. The girl in that video helped me figure it out, though.
Robert Palmer is responsible for me having a thing for icy brunettes.

A-ha: Take On Me Ladytron: Blue Jeans Supercar: Be
I wanted to go with selections that weren't being mentioned and I wanted to stay away from the 80s because there would be too much for me to choose from, but I just can't leave out Take On Me - it doesn't get much more memorable than that.
Blue Jeans isn't some amazing work of cinematography or anything but the entire style, vibe, and aesthetic (as well as the song) just really hit the spot for me.
Be is just wild and there was a time where the video completely dominated my attention span. One of the few songs where the video got me more into the song instead of the other way around.

I miss the MTV of our youth. I was lucky enough to always have cable.
November Rain - iconic, aired constantly, most expensive, can still picture most of the scenes, etc
Paradise City- The massive crowd at the Meadowlands, Axl showing his badges, the backstage look at their set up, my favorite GnR video.
Cold Hearted Snake- Paula Abdul - if you were approaching puberty when this came out you remember it. I had a closet fill of Paula Abdul pics and posters, because of this video.
Many other ones I could mention too

I already had the biggest crush on Madonna as a kid and this video made me feel new things, lol. The love and rockets video was so weird and moody and different than anything else that was on mtv. It stood out to me. I probably don’t need to explain the sledgehammer one. Shit was out there.
