What's so wrong with ebikes on trails?

If the trail is made of relatively loose material that's not often maintained, the higher torque of more powerful motors will create deep ruts unevenly that make it unusable. However, I will go against the groupthink here in saying I think the rules are poorly-made. Trails are ruined by burst torque, not maximum sustainable wattage, maximum speed, or using throttle instead of pedals. It is highly illogical in particular for anywhere to ban Class 2 but not Class 1, as while speed and wattage at least *relate* to torque, pedals vs. throttle absolutely does not. A focus on *maximums* is also an issue, because at these low speeds and powers, a lot of times the hardware can actually deliver Class 3 or even higher performance safely, but it's restricted to Class 1/2 to be allowed. What then is actually distinguishing an "emoto" with pedals on it that lets you toggle it to Class 1 settings, and an "ebike" that simply had that toggle forced on at the factory? If the answer is both would be allowed, that's fine, but I suspect most trails would disallow the former, and thus encourage people to wastefully buy more and discourage people from using trails, out of a fear that not enforcing the rules will lead to a full ebike ban. On the note of fear of a full ban, I don't think it's correct that poor enforcement will lead there. I think the people who would ban ebikes will have an *easier* time if you go around dividing up the ebike community. I also suspect that a full ebike ban is, ultimately, what a lot of people who support the current rules, especially most MTBers, *want*, as they're treating allowance of Class 1 ebikes as a sort of begrudging exception to have a peace treaty. On a broader level, I've noticed in virtually all areas of minor politics that people are *incredibly* eager lately to start bootlicking with talk of not getting stomped. This isn't how you get better rules or shift society, this is how you make problems fester.
