Remember those pencel cases that had all the compartments. Turns out they are still around and quite popular in Asian countries.

I had one as a kid that I got as a Christmas present one year. Though on mine the main pencil compartment slid out of the bottom when you pushed the button instead of moving up into a triangle.
I remember using the spring loaded compartments to launch small objects. Like if you put a pebble on top of one of them and then hit the button it’d send it flying.

The slide-up one like in the video seems to be a new feature, or at least I never saw one like it back then. Mine was the same as yours; push a button, and it opened from the bottom.

I grew up in San Jose, CA and we had the first Sanrio store outside of Japan in our mall (Eastridge). Lots of girls around my age had them in school. I miss that store so much.

I had a crappy one shaped like a robot, with movable arms & legs etc. One arm had a pencil sharpener, I think.
Hammerhandle@reddit
Fuck yes I had that one!

I lived in Thailand around this time and we had access to some pretty dope features. No actual drugs, but it could pop out Swiss army knife tools including thermometers, magnification lenses (obviously for setting fire to things), little brooms will whisk away eraser dust, along with transparent tape, measuring tape, and whiteout tape dispensers.
I was so looking forward to adulthood when we'd surely have scientific calculators, messaging consoles, and mass spectrometry tricorders in our pencil cases. It turns out the ones now don't even bother to lift the pencils out of the box anymore.

No, not that one

Oh man, I completely forgot about these. I can’t remember if I actually had one or if I just saw other kids in my class playing with them.
IncitefulInsights@reddit
What are these actually called? Is there a certain name for this type of pencil case?

Quite niccccce…Check It Out

Mine were Sanrio/Hello Kitty so I always assumed they were an Asian thing in the first place. Loved them so much.

The most popular ones that I can remember were Barbie, My Little Pony, and Hot Wheels. All I can remember about mine is that it was black with dark blue accents, but I can't remember what was on the covers at all.

No?

My wife is the same way. Born in the same year, she went to school one district over from me, and nobody in her school had one, according to her memory.
I knew kids in other surrounding districts who had them, so it was really weird that nobody in hers did.
SpeedwayBoogie70@reddit
I am 82 and none of us had these and I never saw them.
YogurtclosetDull2380@reddit
Yeah, these were from the future
Hypnot0ad@reddit
Born same year and never saw these things.

Yeah, the one in the video is filled with drugs.
Piranha_Vortex@reddit
Would. Dang. I need one

In elementary school, there was this kid from Japan who had one of these that looked like a rocket/ transformer sort of thing. Broke my brain that this was a pencil case, which I had only known as being a smelly vinyl pouch from the drugstore school supply aisle.
WhoYouBoo_eek789@reddit
Yes! I think it was some Sanrio character too. I was trying to convince my 7th grader to get one this year 😁
throwawayhbgtop81@reddit
Now I want one.
straightblather@reddit
I got my niece and nephew each one of these last year. Pass on a little childhood magic to them.
cloudydays2021@reddit
I fucking loved these things and when I was in high school, I kept a little stash in mine.
delladoug@reddit
My 9 year old has one!
miranym@reddit
This style of pencil box was THE DREAM back in elementary school. My mom wouldn't let me get one that could have mechanical failures so I had one with magnetic compartments.

I had one of these as a kid, but I'm more interested in your unique spelling of the word pencil.

Lol, fat-finger typing and dyslexia. I'm surprised the spell checker didn't catch that.
