Billy Corgan goes to the opera

Well, I just got to see Billy Corgan with the Lyric Opera for A Night of Melancholy and Infinite Sadness to commemorate 30 years since the album came out. I wish I could describe what it was like to hear four opera singers, backed by a full chorus and orchestra, harmonizing "Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage" but honestly I really can't. It was somehow absurd and amazing at the same time.

Billy sounded great, and the set and visuals were stunning. The entire show was backed by streaming art deco, steam-punk visuals of Chicago. Honestly the visuals alone would be worth going to see. It wasn't exactly the same as the original album artwork, but was very much in the same space.

Anyway I kept thinking Corgan must have been bummed they never did an MTV Unplugged back in the day, and was trying to come up with a way to be even more unplugged. The whole thing felt like the most appropriate 2025 version of Xennial culture imaginable. None of us are headed to a mosh pit anymore, but I'm not going to get a concussion at the opera!

They had major recording equipment set up in the back, so hopefully they make it available for everyone!
