Billy Corgan goes to the opera

Well, I just got to see Billy Corgan with the Lyric Opera for A Night of Melancholy and Infinite Sadness to commemorate 30 years since the album came out. I wish I could describe what it was like to hear four opera singers, backed by a full chorus and orchestra, harmonizing "Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage" but honestly I really can't. It was somehow absurd and amazing at the same time.
Billy sounded great, and the set and visuals were stunning. The entire show was backed by streaming art deco, steam-punk visuals of Chicago. Honestly the visuals alone would be worth going to see. It wasn't exactly the same as the original album artwork, but was very much in the same space.
Anyway I kept thinking Corgan must have been bummed they never did an MTV Unplugged back in the day, and was trying to come up with a way to be even more unplugged. The whole thing felt like the most appropriate 2025 version of Xennial culture imaginable. None of us are headed to a mosh pit anymore, but I'm not going to get a concussion at the opera!
They had major recording equipment set up in the back, so hopefully they make it available for everyone!

It was amazing.

He was a choir boy at the same church I was baptized at, Queen of All Saints in Sauganash in Chicago. Idk that's all I got.

It's weird watching old movies and seeing the scenes with the Catholic church and reading about important people who went to catholic prep schools. The Catholic Church really lost its hold over American culture.

Yeah I hear you. We weren't religious at all, my parents just did that I think to appease my gramma, my mom's mom. But yeah we'd be in mass with grams every Xmas and Easter and all that shit. Otherwise my parents were old stoner hippies who didn't give a shit. I went to Chicago public schools too lol. But yeah the church in general has lost a lot of importance in society, either for the good, bad or whatever, just is what it is I suppose. Cheers

I went on Saturday and you are right, it is so hard to explain. Such a stunning artistic experience for all the senses. I wish I could go again.
joeydontplaythat@reddit
Same! Was there on Saturday and would love to go again. Hard to put into words how cool it was to hear in that environment, with that arrangement. Well done Billy!

Here’s “1979” performed at that show:

I was intrigued by the idea of this… but this is kind of weird tbh

I'm going on Friday!!
dryheat85000@reddit
This sounds right up my alley! I hope they take this one the road!

I also went this past weekend! I had someone spill two beers on the woman in front of us, a person fall down the stairs mid-performance, and a woman behind me vomit all over during the second to last song. Lots of people seemed way too drunk. Gen X/Xennials are still trying to go hard, just unsuccessfully. 😂

They never did Unplugged, but they did a VH1 Storytellers shortly before their initial breakup.
Hello_Biscuit11@reddit (OP)
Oh I haven't seen that one. Although now that you said "VH1" I could go for some pop-up video.

The Storytellers session is amazing.

My brother was supposed to record the Storytellers episode for me because I had to be out of town. There was a blank tape in the VCR ready to go. All he had to do was turn on the tv and press record. He forgot. I'm still salty and it's been 20 odd years and my brother's been dead for 2. (RIP)

no unplugged but storytellers was pretty cool
Budget_Echo6315@reddit
imagine if they did a full orchestral version of melancholy that would be wild
Budget-Direction-864@reddit
crazy how we don’t get acoustic versions of iconic albums anymore, huh
Background_Award981@reddit
crazy how they had such a unique sound but never got the intimate setting they deserved

Someone ordered the London Symphony Orchestra, possibly while high. Cyprus Hill, I’m looking in your direction

i was just in a moshpit last Sunday 😤

Orchestral arrangements are really trending right now in popular music, a sign of the times perhaps
SpicyLoafette@reddit
OMG! Bro, that sounds like an absolutely wild mashup, like nachos with caviar! Lol! I'd give an arm 'n a leg to experience that kinda genre-bending epicness. Smashing Pumpkins meets opera, damn! Billy C seems to be killing it yet again. Can't wait for the recording, hope it does justice to the real thing. The 90s kid in me is totally jelly rn.
pug_fugly_moe@reddit
I think you’re onto something. He did do a cover of “Landslide,” so an acoustic set tracks.
(Personal opinion: I never cared much for his voice, and I feel he should have left landslide alone.)

I always tell myself I'll get into opera after I turn 50. I've had absolutely no interest in it whatsoever, but I know several 50+ people who are really into it. Perhaps this is how it happens...
nisamun@reddit
They did play Bridge School a couple times so there is definitely acoustic stuff out there.
OrbitalHornet@reddit
Speaking of unplugged, there’s a really great acoustic set on YouTube. It was right supporting the release of Siamese Dream at a Tower Records or something. https://youtu.be/hzwOwzGtiZw?si=VOutlqvKu551vShg
Double-Donut-7343@reddit
missed at, storytellers had some iconic moments though, pure nostalgia
nocapnonerf@reddit
Sounds cool. For whatever reason, hearing his name sparked a random memory of his account of witnessing a lady’s face morphing in front of him one time. Think he mentioned the story a couple of times on the Joe Rogan and Howard Stern podcast.

Some of us are still in the mosh pit 🤘

Im sooooo jealous 😔
I too hope they show us the video eventually. Thank you for the beautiful write up OP!

I just went to a chip tunes concert and saw plenty of xennials moshing lol
Also this sounds like it was awesome

I’m going Friday! Can’t wait, it sounds amazing. I remember thinking they needed to do something like this way back when I heard the album for the first time. Glad it’s finally happening. I’ve waited 30 years for this!
