The White House just launched "The Genesis Mission": A Manhattan Project-style initiative for AI

With the White House launching The Genesis Mission, what are the implications for Open Source Models now, are we going to get stronger waves of regulation, especiallyon the open-source sector? Should we start backing up the LLMs that are on HuggingFace?
Dapper_Extent_7474@reddit
Looks like they are treating AI like the next gold rush. Not too sure though. But its kinda what everyone has been doing lately
nmrk@reddit
I look forward to buying all that cheap salvaged hyperscaler hardware, after the bubble pops.
Annemon12@reddit
I still don't understand why people expect bubble to pop.
This isn't crypto, right at this very moment every call center is getting replaced with AI agents. Those are milions of jobs pooof, software engineers are getting fired left and right because ton of juniors who would do simple stuff are getting replaced with AI, translation jobs are outside of those with certificates are almost completely gone another 100s of thousands of people. Ton of artists, photobashers, ads artists are getting fired guess what is replacing them.
Tesla FSD 14 is really scary good right now. 15-16 will probbaly hit level 5 and those are literally 10s of milions of job in us alone.
And that stuff is only accelerating as AI models are getting better and better.
All of those things literally happened mostly in last 12 months, and only in 2023 public become aware of ai.
davew111@reddit
A couple of weeks ago nvidia's stock went up 500B then went down 800B. These aren't natural market movements, they are indicative of a speculative bubble, overinflated stocks and investors that are easily spooked.
typical-predditor@reddit
When someone designs a 4B model that can do call center work and runs on a workstation, why will people need ChatGPT or Anthropic's big expensive models that are only available to rent? That is how the bubble pops.
mc_zodiac_pimp@reddit
I see it as the opposite: when the promises of OpenAI etc. aren’t met, like a model doing call center work 1:1 as a human would, then folks are going to realize there isn’t going to be some artificial general intelligence and all of this capex spending is for very little gain.
LLMs and what we do in this community are fantastic and I hope the development never stops. The bubble (IMO) is all about companies being valued so fantastically that it just doesn’t make sense. Just yesterday (Nov 25) Nvidia lost what, ~$115B according to Financial Times because of speculation that Google is taking the drivers seat using TPUs? This is just fantasy money backed by historic amounts of debt. Just look at Oracle’s 10 year plan.
Sorry, didn’t mean to rant. You may be right and that may pop the bubble. To me it’s all fantasy money backed by historic amounts of debt driven by promises from snake oil salesmen.
redditrasberry@reddit
The reason is, none of those things are inconsistent with the bubble popping. All of that is priced in to the market already ... and more. At this stage, it literally all has to go right. And things never go 100% right. Companies everywhere are finding they just can't put anything agentic into production without more humans watching it than they originally had doing the work. We will get there but it's going to be way longer than the optimists think.
Annemon12@reddit
Dude agents became a thing like 5 months ago with first tools. It's pretty much infancy.
For those people to get fired it took around 2 years.
It's not longer question of if but when.
adriosi@reddit
The dot com bubble didn't happen because the internet was useless and wasn't going to change the world like everyone thought it would. It happened because of excessive hype and valuations detached from reality. Sounds oddly familiar
Cisco and Amazon survived the Dot-com crash, but their stocks still dropped about 90%. A technology can be revolutionary and still be in a financial bubble at the same time.
kaisurniwurer@reddit
The best evidence against the bubble is to see how they themselves cannot wait to get their hands on the hardware.
KibaWolfbane@reddit
I genuinely believe they'll end up throwing it all into a shredder rather than letting us plebs have it.
thx1138inator@reddit
And excess electrical capacity! ASHP, here I come (after it actually happens...)
findingmike@reddit
Republicans are trying to delay the economic crash until 2027, so they can blame Democrats.
a_beautiful_rhind@reddit
You can't stop what's coming. Regardless of which team you cheer.
ImportancePitiful795@reddit
They are treating AI like new Big Brother/Skynet to be totally intrusive in our lives.
Look at China and Greece.
ResponsibleTruck4717@reddit
Of course it's being treated this way, they want to replace every employee with a machine.
swagonflyyyy@reddit
I just see it as an another angle by Cheeto.
Betadoggo_@reddit
It's not exactly clear what this is supposed to do.
It gives strong bailout energy. It sounds like they want to spend a bunch of money on compute infrastructure for some "platform" based around government owned datasets. Obviously none of this is possible without large contracts for all of the compute providers. The private sector already has all of the profit motives (and money) to seek out the exact same goals.
Rough-Winter2752@reddit
Let me break this down in the simplest terms possible.
The Government possesses the largest treasure trove of metadata available/possible on ALL Americans, living and deceased. Phone conversations. Text messages. Amazon Purchases. Websites frequented. Reddit posts, etc. If you did anything involving a smart phone or computer connected to the internet, they have it.
They want to create a SkyNet AI that can parse all this massive data to determine who is going to be 'troublesome'. It's Pre-Crime, Predictive Behavior Algorithms, etc. Determine the threats before they are a threat.
JustinPooDough@reddit
ding ding ding!!! We're not saving Sam's ass - that would be unpalatable.
Instead, we're providing OpenAI with federal funding in accordance with an executive order! It's all above board you see. No bail out here. Hey where did that 2 trillion dollars go?

>The Genesis Mission will dramatically accelerate scientific discovery, strengthen national security, secure energy dominance, enhance workforce productivity, and multiply the return on taxpayer investment into research and development, thereby furthering America’s technological dominance and global strategic leadership.
Free money to tech companies baby. This is probably the backstop openai was asking for just weeks ago
Usual-Orange-4180@reddit
China has been heavily subsidizing their AI effort and a hair behind us.
manewitz@reddit
At the rate they’re deleting scientific datasets. I hope they plan on training this thing sooner rather than later.
Durian881@reddit
It's probably pushed by some of the more vocal private sector players to get funding and bailouts. Interesting to see what it meant for rest of the world.
Hefty-Horror-5762@reddit
DoE got mentioned a few times but not in the way I would have expected. If they want to help AI grow they should be taking steps to dramatically grow energy production or at least establish a regulatory posture to allow that to happen.
dhyratoro@reddit
Wtf about Stargate project? It died?
ares623@reddit
Didn’t drum up the investment hype they were hoping i guess
jferments@reddit
What are you talking about? There were hundreds of billions of dollars invested and the data centers are actively under construction.
ares623@reddit
No, hundreds of billions pledged. OpenAI has a one or two blog posts on their website about data centres with “Stargate” in the name but this is a deliberate attempt to mislead readers that they are part of the Stargate project announced at the White House. They are separate projects with unrelated parties. But to the casual reader it makes “Project Stargate” is actually did something.
jferments@reddit
These aren't just "one or two blog posts". They are multi billion dollar data centers that are already under construction.
jferments@reddit
No there are currently data centers under construction. It very much didn't die, and has hundreds of billions of dollars of investment behind it.

If any you are into investing, this is your queue to pile the hell into quality tech stocks. Gold probably also going a lot higher. Queue the currency debasement and irresponsible fiscal stimulus. Liquidity baby! Sweet, sweet liquidity.
Seriously though. Do yourself a big favor: Either put your money into the market, or watch your savings lose their purchasing power at an exponential rate - it's only getting worse from here. They be printin'
fallingdowndizzyvr@reddit
LOL. If it was "A Manhattan Project-style initiative" then there would have been no announcement.
HSLB66@reddit
Insult to the Manhattan project, honestly
EugenePopcorn@reddit
You either die building AGI to save humanity, or you live long enough to see yourself handing all of your infrastructure over to the police state.
dhyratoro@reddit
AGI to save humanity??? You got nothing from Terminator and other films?
the320x200@reddit
No, fictional ENTERTAINMENT is not what one should be using as the foundation of your worldview.
Superman is not real. Skynet is not real. Hogwarts is not real.
a_beautiful_rhind@reddit
They seem to be picking 1984 with a dash of brave new world.
jazir555@reddit
Yet
EugenePopcorn@reddit
Their motivation, not mine. It's why they bet so big and are about to burn so hard.
wrecklord0@reddit
Pretty sure their motivation is personal greed and power, but saving humanity is an easier sell
Sabin_Stargem@reddit
I like AI, but I am going to say this: the Genesis Mission will just be a grift and abject failure for society. Switzerland's Apertus and the assorted Chinese models are far more likely to do good for the world.
lolwut778@reddit
What's the end goal for this? AGI? More AI adoption?
Manhattan Project produced nuclear weapons. Apollo Program resulted in the moon landings.
mc_zodiac_pimp@reddit
The goal is historic Q4 earnings for an unnamed donor.
CuriouslyCultured@reddit
This is primarily laying the groundwork for big contracts for Google and OpenAI.
I'm not sure how much research the government has that Google hasn't already slurped up, so the top line impact of the research platform won't be huge but it might help bootstrap smaller labs.
Our supercomputer infrastructure isn't right for training/inference so that part is a little weird, but the value is non-zero.
mc_zodiac_pimp@reddit
It’s interesting that you say both Google and OpenAI. To me it’s one or the other.
Google is forging forward with TPUs whereas OpenAI is leasing Nvidia GPUs from cloud providers. To me I’d say this is for OpenAI and Nvidia, but I’d be curious to see the case for Google here.
noage@reddit
Sounds like the government looking for ways to pay the Palantir guy so he donates even more next time
mc_zodiac_pimp@reddit
Even Peter Thiel dumped his stocks in Nvidia: https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/peter-thiels-fund-offloaded-nvidia-stake-third-quarter-filing-shows-2025-11-17/
Then it came out that Michael Burry was shorting Palantir. Hell it would seem that AI and general tech evaluations made Burry walk away from his hedge fund,
starshade16@reddit
Braindead title
FaceDeer@reddit
My main concern is that they'll focus on "we need to make American AI companies dominant" rather than just "we need to enhance American AI in general." The latter would be good for open source models, the former perhaps not so much.
typical-predditor@reddit
EU could and should invest more.
FriendlyUser_@reddit
thanks god those are all imposers, stupids without any professionalism.
rvistro@reddit
Why people keep saying open source, isn't open weight the proper term?
ttkciar@reddit
It is, but journalists and politicians care more about buzz than accuracy.
hw999@reddit
5% will go to A.I, and 95% will go to something terrible and racist.
ttkciar@reddit
No lie detected. We're suffering under exactly that kind of administration.
noctrex@reddit
And that's how the bubble will not pop, and RAM prices will be 600% for the next 10 years.
ttkciar@reddit
Don't hold your breath :-) there was government investment in the AI industry before the first two AI Winters, too.
Governments consist of people, and when people lose confidence in AI, so do governments.
AlwaysLateToThaParty@reddit
Are they trying to sound evil?
UsualResult@reddit
They spelled it wrong. It's spelled "Genisys" as in "Terminator Genisys".
johnfkngzoidberg@reddit
Isn’t this actually just a pre-bailout for OpenAI, who is supposed to to for-profit soon? Does that sound really fucked up to anyone else?
No_Conversation9561@reddit
If it’s for OpenAI, Musk is gonna be furious.
AmusingVegetable@reddit
Even Grok is rooting for the aneurysm…
rakuu@reddit
No, it’s funding for them, they’re not waiting for a bailout. The first ones I believe to come out that they’re part of it is Anthropic.
Mescallan@reddit
That's purely speculation on speculation lol.
whatever462672@reddit
Texas is going to be a data center no-man's-land. When all the humans are gone, it will be even easier to get the electoral college to pick red every election. Land is obedient.
RayHell666@reddit
Great idea to give it the name of one of the Terminator movie. :/

The way things are going, he might actually be right for once.
BTolputt@reddit
No real implications on anything but a bailout opportunity for Trump's tech-CEO donors.
Think "space force", add a few more billion to it, and that about sums it up.
machinegunkisses@reddit
I am genuinely curious how long this will survive. I don't think I've ever seen anything out of this administration that lasted longer than 3 months unless it was driven by Stephen Miller or Russ Vought, and I don't think either of those guys is attached to this.
ares623@reddit
Here’s the bailout, sorry, government backed investment, that OpenAI’s CFO was struggling to articulate in the recent interview
AfterAte@reddit
"Manhattan Project" is a bit much for a money laundering scheme. Also, there is always modelscope.cn for Qwen/Kimi/GLM/Deepseek users, and the US government can't do anything about it.
frankieche@reddit
LLM != AI.
This is a bailout for rich buddies.
nonlinear_nyc@reddit
That’s the bailout
Sad_Yam6242@reddit
"The Genesis Mission will build an integrated AI platform to harness Federal scientific datasets"
Lol they won't. You would(n't) be surprised to find out how the Federal Government holds onto the vast majority of all genetic data and is very reticent to let anybody have it if their research isn't strictly controlled and aligned.
It's also not just genetic. Ever hear of the studies done tracking Amish population and things like "normal illnesses" like asthma and more?
Wonder ho curated they will be.
sluuuurp@reddit
Lots of DOE particle physics data is stored on tape because hard drives are too expensive. I wonder how they’re planning to have AI connect to that when it takes months to access all the data just once.
