Building vs buying with a 5090
Posted by SINYACHTA@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 15 comments
I want to buy a gaming pc and my coworker told me I have to build it myself to save money, only thing is I see pre builts with 5090s for 3800 bucks and the 5090 makes building it myself way more, even with cheaping out on everything else.
And I know I don't need one, but I want to have something I won't have to upgrade for years. Money isn't an issue but I want to get the most I can out of it.

just custom builds pre builts are cheaper but i would not want to take the risk of having a pre built as well since they tend to cheap out on other parts. (They just look better aswell)
Whats your budget? ill happily help.you lol

The cost of a prebuilt 5090 pc is the budget.

this is 6 months ago man forget it, a 5090 is almost 5k usd now😂

If you have the kind of money to blow on a 5090, the custom build it and get exactly all the different parts you want. No reason not to.

The 5090 alone cost less than a custom build.

If money isn’t an issue then why are you even asking this question??

If you're really intent on getting the 5090 I say go prebuilt. That way when the card melts you can just return the PC and get a replacement instead of arguing with 10 different manufacturers about who's at fault only for them to all day "user error. S.O.L"

Pre-builts that feature higher-end GPUs tend to cheap out on the other components; motherboard, coolers, fans. RAM memory, etc. - you really can't compare part-to-part on pre-builts because you don't get full specs on the compnents. This will keep the price down. Going with building yourself, you'll know exactly what components you have and generally is cheaper than going with a pre-built.

Usually I would agree with you, but currently prices are so wonky that I could literally not build the PC I wanted even with low cost parts for less than pre-built. Very weird.

Another big problem is that the 5090 isn't even available at the semi-inflated prices (~2600$). A lot of suppliers are holding them to build pre-builds, so if you try to build your own you're way overpaying.
Basically 5090s are in a weird spot where it does kind of make sense to buy prebuilts.

This. I see prebuilts listed with their GPU and CPU but they rarely state the make and model of the MB, RAM, NVME, Power supply, etc

If money isn't an issue I'd personally build it myself. It feels more rewarding and nicer to look at imo.

When parts are inflated above msrp, prebuilts can be good due to their deals that are less affected. I've heard some people had luck with the best buy chat support helping get 5090 fe at msrp b4 so maybe research and see. If true, then you should be able to get it for a fair bit cheaper with better components as shown below. If not then bad luck.

Sometimes prebuilt computers cost less.
These days, with price of components, it may be a better deal to buy a prebuilt.
However, in the not distant future, he was correct. If you are skilled at buying/building you can save a little money and get better parts, but it usually involves taking advantage of sales.

if money ain’t an issue then just get a prebuilt 5090
