What 80' or 90s food do you still crave and eat?
Posted by RandomAsianGuy@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 189 comments
Aldi still sells these doughy pizzas that comes in an aliminium foil. They are soft and never crisp up. The cheese and sauce is questionable, but they are soo tasty. Ate these all the time as a kid.
I still buy them even though I have plenty of amazing pizzerias around me.

Steak-umms. I was blown away when I found out I could make steak and cheese at home as a kid. I don't dare eat them anymore as I know it would taint my lovely memories of how great it was back then, but I do still crave them. Mama Celeste pizzas would be a close second.
Mission_Spray@reddit
Those weird fruit (but not actually fruit) tart empanadas things that were covered in a thin layer of icing. For reference, I am in the US and grew up very poor. These empanada fruit tart things were by no means quality food.
happy_caturday@reddit
Gas station fruit pies in the waxed paper wrapper? Forgot who makes them, but they were amazing — especially the TMNT pudding-filled one.
Mission_Spray@reddit
Ooh the ninja turtle versions we were not allowed because they weren’t “healthy” like the “fruit” versions.
Like, come on, mom! They’re all sugar!
happy_caturday@reddit
Are those the fruit empanadas you were recalling? Such a vivid memory of my childhood. One of the fondest memories of my father (RIP) was him bringing home those pies as treats for me and my sibling when we were kids.
Zxvasdfthrowaway@reddit
Toaster Strudels?
Mission_Spray@reddit
Nah, those were too expensive. Whatever the empanada things were, I ate cold.
Zxvasdfthrowaway@reddit
I ate store brand Strudels, unless name brand was on sale. Sadly, I don’t enjoy them anymore since they’ve cheaped out on ingredients.
Can you think of any other details? I’m curious about whatever it was you ate.
Mission_Spray@reddit
They had a hard pastry crust coated in a thin flaky layer of icing, and were shaped like an empanada with a fat center and an half-moon shape.
They were large, like the size of my hand (today as an adult), and came in a paper-like wrapper that was maybe lined with wax?
The filling consistency was like canned cherry pie - brightly colored and very sweet. Sometime there would be a solid “fruit” chunk you’d bite into. But it was mostly a transparent sugary gel.
Zxvasdfthrowaway@reddit
Ooh, in a white waxy wrapper? I’d say hostess pies but those were more rectangular, not empanada shaped. Tastykakes weren’t around when & where I grew up, they used to be more of an east coast thing.

I used to eat teddy grahams in a bowl with milk.
TheLakeWitch@reddit
I use to love the Stouffer’s French bread pizzas and ate them well into my young adulthood because they were cheap and filling, especially paired with a soup or veggie as a side.
Nowadays they, like so many other things, are just not the same and they aren’t even enjoyable to me anymore. I’ve noticed that a lot of packaged foods are slowly losing flavor while getting saltier/sweeter (depending on the food) which I assume is a form of shrinkflation. Use less seasoning, cheese, whatever and cover up the fact that your food is getting blander with more salt or sugar to trick our tastebuds into thinking it’s more flavorful than it actually is.
Easy_Independent_313@reddit
I make those all the time when I have baguette that is not so fresh anymore.

Their individual deep dishes were so good and cheap af. I miss them.
Geek_King@reddit
Frozen microwave food line called "Zap-Its" (I think), they had a Cheese burger with bacon, and I also recall pizza, and I loved both. I also think they may have had french fries, that weren't bad. All of these items had that crisping square that food either sat on, or in the case of the fries, was a carton that surrounding them as to ensure over all crispness.
M0stAsteL3sS@reddit
Micro-Magic? They were in a red box.
Geek_King@reddit
That must be it! I think it just must have been imperfect little kid memory, it looks like MicroMagic had all the food I remember! Thanks kind internet stranger for placing that puzzle piece!
M0stAsteL3sS@reddit
Anytime. Fun fact, they also sold micro magic milkshakes.
Geek_King@reddit
My Dad would get the Micro Magic Milkshakes, they were pretty great, but it was tough to ride the line between milk shake consistency and too liquidity.

Yup! Standard lunch senior year. They have gorditas, but it just ain’t the same. Weren’t there also 2 other flavors?
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
There was the Baja flavor, if we're talking Taco Bell. They sell that sauce in stores, but it doesn't seem quite the same to my memories.
My jam was a beef baja chalupa. My word, I ate so many of those things in college.
AntiLeftist101@reddit
Yea! There were and I never go those. I was so hyper-fixated on the Santa Fe.
I do like the cheesy Gordita Crunch but it is not the same.
FajitaTits@reddit
I'd give anything for an original recipe Butterfinger--where the milk chocolate was a creamy, silky, sweet coating over an unnaturally shaped peanut butter center that felt like biting into sugary salty crystals that were collected from a sugar cave. Man...candy really was the best when we were kids and before corporations cut corners with palm oil and fillers.
Sofagirrl79@reddit
Palm oil and coconut oils was actually the OG ingredient in cheaper chocolate candies before being replaced by partially hydrogenated oils in the late 80s early 90s due to their higher saturated fat content compared to trans fats, that said not sure which one is healthier
FajitaTits@reddit
Yup, I remember foil-wrapped chocolates on holidays from an indiscriminate brand and it tasted terrible compared to the candy bars I'd buy at a convenience store. Being older, I now know it was because of those ingredients in place of real milk chocolate made with cocoa
weedtrek@reddit
Yep. 5th avenue is pretty close, but still not it.
ElusiveWhark@reddit
Try a 5th Avenue, not quite the same but has that same crispity crunchity center
cronokun@reddit
I love 5th Avenue! I rarely see it in stores for some reason so when I come across it I’ll usually treat myself.
No-Hospital559@reddit
You are correct the 5th Avenue is close to what the Butterfinger used to be.

Swimminginthestorm@reddit
I work in a little retail shop and I told my boss to buy RC for the cooler. It sells out quickly, mostly because people say they haven’t had it in years.

Here in Germany, we had a Gyros + rice ready meal in a tin bowl, to be heated in a water bath. It was far from great, but I remember it as quite yummy.
Also, we had cheese + ham "Plätzchen" - no idea how to translate it into something equivalent. They were small pancakes, filled with ham and cheese, battered and breaded and fried. Frozen food to be cooked in the oven or a pan. Gosh I loved those. They haven't been selling them anymore for many years.

I still get Boboli crusts. When we first started dating, I would make my wife milkshakes and pizzas with Boboli. We mostly do homemade crust now but when we're feeling nostalgic, it's nice to have one of our original date night meals.

https://www.foodservicedirect.com/tony-s-fiestada-whole-grain-beef-pizza-5-44-ounce-72-per-case-21261860.html
The fries were better back then because they used beef tallow for the frying oil. You can get that and make them at home, just gotta do the double-fry method.
Swimminginthestorm@reddit
I was thinking of buying a case of fiestadas online, but I’m afraid my adult palate won’t like them anymore. Don’t want to ruin the memories.
Neither-Principle139@reddit
Not to mention, the intestinal distress you’ll put yourself through these days…
SquirrelCone83@reddit
There are actually two grocery stores in my town that sell them in packs for 4, owned by the same parent company, but one store sells fiestadas that are really good, the other sells them and they're mediocre. So even as an adult, they're good. Maybe not as good as they were when we were kids. Hard to say what they'd be like if you bought them in bulk though.
