24th century pillows

Pillows (sometimes the exact same one) made from the same shiny colourful material are seen several times aboard the USS Enterprise-D (#StarTrekTNG's "The Child"↖️, "The Survivors"↗️, "The Offspring"➡️, "Night Terrors"↙️, "Half a Life"↘️) but also on Rutia IV ("The High Ground"⬅️).

Computer, pillow. Shiny
BigConstruction4247@reddit
Me: Computer, can you replicate me a nice, big, soft, squishy pillow that isn't shiny?
Computer: ... ... ... ... I'm sorry. That is not within the replicator's ability. Please provide specifications.
KhajiitPaw@reddit
Computer doesn't apologise to anyone 💅
BigConstruction4247@reddit
Computer is very sorry about the pillows. It knows that they're shit.

It’s almost like they used the same property department and set designers for multiple episodes of the series! 😆
But yeah, the shimmery holographic rainbow thing seemed to be a trend. Better than the super flat ones on DS9, that may well have been made out of retread rubber. 🤓
HTired89@reddit
Surprised Wesley didn't wear one as a jumper tbh
Maximum_Web9072@reddit
I think when they ran out of ideas for how to make something look futuristic, they just trotted out the glittery/metallic/holographic fabric and called it a day. Like the fencing outfits are just regular fencing outfits but with glitter XD

Or like the luggage. Let's make it angular and totally impractical to store stuff in!
I always always really enjoy the spacification of flashlights in scifi. Got to let people know we're in the distant future by making the flashlight dimmer and stupid to hold.
FuckIPLaw@reddit
Flashlights were just actually that dim back then. It was so bad that a lot of the time movies and TV shows would rig up a car headlight bulb inside of a flashlight body and run a hidden wire going off to a 12 volt battery through the actor's sleeve, just to make it turn up well on camera.
These days, well, I've got a light that takes a single 3.7 volt AA that's brighter than one of those cigarette lighter powered spot lights would have been back then. And it's not even really into the hobbyist grade stuff.
trixbler@reddit
Oh the stupid wrist mounted lights drove me crazy! You no longer just need to angle your hand towards what you want to see, you have to hold your whole arm out stiffly like you’re practicing for a nazi parade. Incredibly impractical.
dantheplanman1986@reddit
That's why I liked on Babylon 5 when the flashlight Sinclair grabbed coulda come from the camping section at a box store
andychef@reddit
One cool thing about the remaster is that you can see some of the gorgeous fabrics the costume department used. For example, I love the casino-carpet pattern in Romulan uniforms. And the dresses for Time's Arrow are simply gorgeous period work
Leopold_Darkworth@reddit
I think some of these were actually emergency survival blankets. They're shiny because they're supposed to be reflective.
BigFitMama@reddit
The Pillowtron 3000 is a state of art nanite reactive head support device with reflective heat and cooling function out of Ferengar.
(Pillowtron takes no responsibility if nanites are exposed to cosmic waves and impregnates the ship's counselor.)
KhajiitPaw@reddit
I heard the first part in Majel Barett's computer voice
CaptainsYacht@reddit
In the TNG epispde "Suddenly Human" where the crew finds a human boy raised by Tamarians, they try to expose the kid to human culture until he breaks into Picard's quarters and stabs him in the chest.
My take from that has always been that Picard's pillow looked hella uncomfortable. It was too big and put his neck at a very uncomfortable angle. Like, wtf? I'd rather be stabbed if that were my only pillow option.
BigConstruction4247@reddit
In the future, everyone will sleep like a body in the morgue.
road_runner321@reddit
My headcanon is it's a futuristic material that keeps the pillow cool.
ennie117@reddit
And your hair from getting knotted should you have enough for that to be an issue
BigConstruction4247@reddit
Picard: 😠
SportTop2610@reddit
They dont look comfortable at all.
avelmzalation@reddit
still better than the DS9 trangle pillows
Smooth_Riker@reddit
I bet they get real hot real quick and sweat just pools. Might as well use a garbage bag as a pillow case.
nrthrnlad@reddit
1980s 24th century aesthetic.
Fuzzy_Builder_2153@reddit
Where's the MyPillow Guy?
hananobira@reddit
Nowhere near the Federation. He breaks out in hives if exposed to socialism.
DrTenochtitlan@reddit
Probably on that Nazi planet from the original series.
theglobalnomad@reddit
He's just arrived on Bajor from his homeworld of Ferenginar. Grifting religious people is his specialty.
Assos99@reddit
I think I saw that pillow in a very special episode of Blossem too.
baphometromance@reddit
Honestly it just looks like it is unbelieveably high thread count, like "super-silk" or something
Ratotosk@reddit
What if the shiny material made the pillows always be the 'cool side'?
Stunning_Mediocrity@reddit
Thats the color scheme of a 90's Taco Bell.
161frog@reddit
Even worse than this are the hand towels. Sequins on one side, non absorbent looking material on the other. They give me the ick.
42ElectricSundaes@reddit
I bet they’re cool on both sides
Odd-Abbreviations494@reddit
I always wondered if the patterns would impress on people’s faces at night
Bluestarzen@reddit
Each time you moved at night, the noise of the pillow would surely wake you up? It looks like plastic.
Still. It’s those triangular, flat cardboard-looking pillows on DS9 that really make me cringe.
Kulban@reddit
My neck hurts just from looking at them.
WilliamMcCarty@reddit
I liked square and triangle ones they used on DS9
juleslizard@reddit
Slippy slidy dream time!
For real though, I have never sweated so much as I did with a satin pillowcase.
WestNomadOnYT@reddit
Looks like satin. Makes sense for the flagship of the Federation.
one-out-of-8-billion@reddit
Great collection of pics!
