South Louisiana checking in... this ain't any type of jambalaya - I don't care what cell block or city you live in. This is just a bunch of shit lol. Jambalaya does not have corn or carrots, and every time you call it that, a Cajun loses their soul (the good Cajuns, not the nasty ones - so you're doing a disservice).

Prompt: I have carrots, corn, ground beef, and a crock pot. How can I make a simple but tasty dinner?
Response:Easiest move here is a stripped-down crock pot “cowboy stew.” It’s cheap, forgiving, and hits that cozy beefy-sweet vibe from the carrots and corn.
Here’s a clean version that works with minimum stuff on hand.
Ingredients
Ground beef
Carrots, chopped
Corn (fresh, frozen, or canned)
Onion if you have it
A can of diced tomatoes or tomato sauce (optional but very good)
Garlic if you have it
Salt, pepper
Paprika or chili powder if you want it
Beef broth or water with a bouillon cube
Steps
Brown the ground beef in a pan. Salt it. This step matters. Dump it into the crock pot.
Add the carrots and corn.
If you have onion or garlic, sauté them quickly in the beef fat and toss them in.
Add the tomatoes/tomato sauce. If you don’t have any, use broth or water. You just want enough liquid to come up maybe halfway.
Season with salt, pepper, paprika or chili powder.
Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or high for 3 to 4.
What the end result tastes like Hearty, stew-like, mildly sweet from the carrots and corn. The beef flavors the broth and everything gets tender.
If you want it thicker, stir in a spoonful of flour or cornstarch mixed with water during the last 20 minutes.
If you want it more “beefy soup” than stew, add more broth.
If you want something different, I can pivot it toward chili, a taco-style filling, or a shepherd’s pie base.

Just put egg noodles in it, and it should be fine. Unless there are some really weird spices in it, too. Worst comes to worst, you can try to sift out the grease as well.
Mr_Hobbyist@reddit (OP)
She didn't brown the beef first so the "sauce" (if you can call it that) is incredibly grainy. There was no saving this one.

I asked Gemini for a pancake recipe and it was entirely sensible and correct. It didn't say to add half a cup if staples or to boil the pancakes.
However, there's no reason to use recipies made by predictive text when actual recipes written by actual people with taste buds exist.
Haruhanahanako@reddit
If people knew the basics of how LLMs work they'd never use it for recipes. It is as if for every word typed, a new person comes in, reads the entire conversation, and guesses the next word. Knowing that, the recipe it makes might be surprisingly accurate for guessing, but not accurate enough for actual cooking. It doesn't find a recipe and give it to you. It gives you an amalgamation of all the recipes it knows.
Although we are probably nearing the point where it can just find actual recipes online. You can probably ask it to do that.
vicsj@reddit
Yeah chatgpt at least uses the internet and sources things correctly if you ask it to now.
throwaway33333333311@reddit
If you ask it to is crazy
vicsj@reddit
Sorry, bad phrasing - I meant it will search the internet if you ask it to. Otherwise it will mostly use the datasets it's trained on to answer requests. But in the beginning when it got access to the internet it didn't list its sources the way it does now where it adheres more to sourcing etiquette by using footnotes and quotations. It will do that without needing to ask.
Frydendahl@reddit
Why not just google for the recipe in the first place then? 🤔
vicsj@reddit
It is the lazy option, isn't it. I have tried to use chatgpt for recipes a few times just because you can be highly specific and ask it to come with suggestions. Like I have a lot of food sensitivities and specific ingredients I have to stay away from, and it is often a pain to find recipes that adhere to that. Just plot them all into chatgpt and it gets the memo. I've tried a few African recipes as a result that I wouldn't have thought to search for myself. Or I have asked it to suggest sauces with my requirements that can fit a dish I'm trying to make.
It feels more collaborative than skimming through all the suggested Google result so there is an appeal for sure.
KeenPro@reddit
I feel the venn diagram of people who know to do this and people who use AI for recipes has zero overlap.
Qira57@reddit
I use ChatGPT to learn how to cook - rather than asking for exact recipes, I ask what the essential elements of shrimp scampi are for example.
Garlic, butter, white wine, sautée the shrimp in it
Add aromatics if you want
Because it’s way easier to do that than scroll through 12 pages of life backstory to get a recipe that may or may not be good, and I’m trying to develop my skill in cooking without a full recipe in the first place.
I’m honestly concerned that most people don’t know how to use ChatGPT effectively, it’s not really that hard
space_monster@reddit
That was true in 2022.
Betaseal@reddit
To be fair, Gemini is Google
AvesAvi@reddit
People act like LLMs are maliciously incompetent and are fully incapable of providing anything of remote use. I swear most people here are just parroting other opinions because I've been using LLMs for recipes sparingly and it's been great, especially for recipes I was having a really hard time finding specific ratios for (e.g. everywhere online says "add some X" while LLM says "Add 3 tablespoons").b
Like if you put in a poorly formed request and blindly follow it completely without doing any kind of critical thinking and it turns out like above then skill issue I guess? But if you were returned a recipe that is basically inedible it's not hard to tell.
Redditors think LLMs are simultaneously fully incapable of creating anything original (true) but simultaneously only outputs useless hallucinated slop. Is it not pretty likely that of all the millions of recipes across every language its scraped that there would be one that fits your prompt?
ImplementFunny66@reddit
If someone were to google, “recipes by ingredient” there are several websites with the function to search and sort by ingredients.
BaconIsntThatGood@reddit
Honestly I'd opt for using something like Gemini instead because it skips the listicles or ad crammed websites that SEO their way to the top of Google's results.
But Gemini is also fairly good at finding sourced information when you ask it the right questions.
ImplementFunny66@reddit
It’s not part of my tech habits to seek out AI at this point. I got the nickname google queen when I was younger and it’s still my go-to for finding info. I like research and going down my own rabbit holes.
BaconIsntThatGood@reddit
I do too, and always have. I've just found google has gotten worse.
Depends what you're looking for too. In this example (finding a recipe) it's not really much depth so I'd probably opt for making the robot do the searching.
Ironically - I don't actually pay for gemini but I opted to use the free version and chose 'thinking' and asked it
"find me a crock pot recipe - the only ingredients I have are ground beef, carrots, potato, corn, and basic pantry spices" - based on OP's nightmare of a photo
It gave me a source website it used as a basis and then gave me what sounds like reasonable instructions (based on what I know of cooking)
With this as the source: https://butterwithasideofbread.com/slow-cooker-poor-mans-hamburger-stew/#:~:text=2%20tsp%20Italian%20seasoning,1%20tsp%20onion%20powder
BigGillySuit@reddit
After you scroll through 3 pages of “my great great great grandfather taught me how to make these pancakes on a chilly autumn morning when I was just 8 years old….”
codeprimate@reddit
The issue is absolutely between the keyboard and chair.
My "cookbook" Claude project consistently delivers restaurant quality recipes. The key is that it asks me questions about flavor profiles and uses best practices to develop techniques and ingredient ratios. No single-shot slop.
AnOfficeJockey@reddit
I'v been using it for meal ideas for a semi-restrictive diet for 2 or so years now and I haven't once had a bad meal. And the macros tend to be very close.
MrBeverly@reddit
LLMs have their place but most people are using them incorrectly, irresponsibly, and in the worst cases, dangerously.
They are best used as a sounding board by people who are already experts or at least competent in the field they're asking a question about and will be able to identify when an answer is wrong or incomplete. Think a programmer Rubber Duck Debugging.
Unfortunately people are using them like an Ask the Expert lifeline when it really isn't that.
Oriori420@reddit
I second this, basically learned how to cook by using chatGPT. My trick was giving custom instructions on not glazing stupid questions and actually giving arguments if it doesn't make sense, also asking why I should do what it says and why does it actually work.
BaconIsntThatGood@reddit
Yea you'll want to specifically say "find me a recipe" not "make me" or "give me" or "what is".
PlasmaWhore@reddit
Because websites with recipes are riddled with ads. I've had great results with chatgpt recipes.

NewConsideration5921@reddit
People on Reddit just love to hate ai, it's all the rage these days
amglasgow@reddit
For good reason.
NewConsideration5921@reddit
It's the same with any new technology, people are afraid of change, they are NPCs essentially that can't think for themselves
amglasgow@reddit
It's the "AI" that can't think.
LLMs are useless, harmful, environmental disasters.
vicsj@reddit
Tbf there are plenty of reasons to hate on LLM's.They're replacing workers, they are used to run scams, create more convincing bots, they aren't good for the environment and don't recycle the water they use. The lack of regulations are very annoying as well.
That being said LLM's definitely have their uses and are incredible tools for the right job, but I think the bad rep is very understandable atm.
buttbuttlolbuttbutt@reddit
Yeah, and they instantly discount names like yours that look like the ones reddit generates as a bot woulsnt care ti change it, ao they will instantly think posts like yours are an ai bot, that will read this and respond with a delicious cupcake recipe to prove them all wrong.
amglasgow@reddit
It most likely just copied an existing recipe word for word
AzucarParaTi@reddit
I had it help me tweak an instant pot recipe and now it's perfect and very reliable.
Le_Nabs@reddit
Because most people have no idea how this tech works, don't think beyond 'this is just google but friendly'.
It's not, it shouldn't be used that, but it just don't stick
Kaidus_@reddit
What makes you think an LLM like ChatGPT isn’t suitable for providing recipes?
84theone@reddit
The literal fucking post we are on?
tommytwolegs@reddit
I'll judge it when I see the recipe. We have no way of knowing from this post if OPs wife just sucks at cooking.
ecr_@reddit
It's a damn slow cooker recipe, how can you manage to fuck that up?
tommytwolegs@reddit
I don't know, but I doubt the recipe said to throw ground beef, corn and (sweet potatoes? Carrots?) into a slow cooker raw and forget about it which is what this looks like lol.
MothafuckinPlacentas@reddit
What makes you doubt that?
tommytwolegs@reddit
Because you would have to be an idiot to follow that recipe and think it will turn into anything other than this. So either they are an idiot that didn't follow the recipe or an idiot that did. Given those odds I'm leaning towards fucked up the recipe.
But also go tell chatgpt to give you a slow cooker recipe with these ingredients. I'd be stunned if it just told you to put them inside and turn it on
MothafuckinPlacentas@reddit
You must be easily stunned. But I agree, chatgpt is for idiots
tommytwolegs@reddit
I'm convinced people who hate chatgpt are somehow too dumb to use it and get mad they can't trust its output 100%.
timeforchorin@reddit
Yeah, I mean I've given grok/chatgpt plenty of recipe prompts and they've all been at least edible. This is most likely fake and if it's not fake it's operator error.
Kaidus_@reddit
Because this is one post with no mention of the recipe. This could have very easily been human error. Anecdotally, ChatGPT has always given me great recipes.
I swear some antiAI people are so blinded by their ignorant hate that they fail to understand any semblance of nuance.
SirToastymuffin@reddit
Then be the counterpoint, show off these great recipes its apparently made if you want anyone to share your confidence.
Personally, even if it can string together ingredients passably, I can't imagine it could have any way of comprehending what techniques to use, how, and when, or even how long. Because, yknow, that part of a recipe is developed practically.
Kaidus_@reddit
Sure, no problem. Here’s an album of some recent recipes I’ve made (all generated by ChatGPT)
LLMs these days are more than capable of coming up with basic recipes. I imagine there are a lot of recipes in the training data, and they can easily search the web if not.
SirToastymuffin@reddit
Oh, well I guess I should have specified. I was interested in seeing the bot's original output to see what it actually produces.
Kaidus_@reddit
The screenshots are a little too long for me to get the full thing, but as you can see from the photos, they’re more than acceptable and I encourage you to try it for yourself if you still don’t believe me.
It’s actually baffling to me that so many people here think this isn’t a task that LLMs are capable of. It’s especially useful to me since I often want recipes tailored to my specific ingredients and portion sizes, which again, it does pretty much perfectly.
BeerTheBear@reddit
Agreed completely. I don’t think anyone here has even tried to use ChatGPT as a cooking helper. I do believe if you ask it to make you a basic recipe as a beginner that you’ll potentially get some bland things, but that’s on the prompting. I’ve made many impeccable and unique foods using it. There is so much food content and science online that to believe ChatGPT doesn’t understand complimentary flavors and processes is wild.
SymmetricalFeet@reddit
Those are pictures of food, not recipes. A photo can't convey taste.
Please tell me English isn't your native language, and "completed dish" and "recipe" use the same word/phrase in your native tongue.
LonePuma@reddit
So his pictures of food and not an actual recipe can't be proof of AI recipes being good but OP's picture of slop can prove that AI recipes are bad?
This entire thread is full of people blindly hating on LLM's bc "AI BAD".
Kaidus_@reddit
What exactly are you suggesting here? That ChatGPT gave me recipes that look okay, but taste terrible?
Is this scenario seriously easier for you to believe than the model giving an actually decent recipe?
You’re more than welcome to test it for yourself and ask it for these recipes.
pridetwo@reddit
Lmao why is there a mountain of parm on your risotto and carbonara
Kaidus_@reddit
That’s my own personal preference lol ChatGPT didn’t recommend that.
pridetwo@reddit
That's your best argument in favor of chatgpt recipes lol
Kaidus_@reddit
I like a lot of parm on my food, therefore ChatGPT can’t give good recipes? Not sure what you’re trying to say.
pridetwo@reddit
Im saying chatgpt not recommending a mountain of parm on a risotto means chatgpt at least has good sense in that regard
Kaidus_@reddit
Ahaha I see; apologies for the misunderstanding.
pridetwo@reddit
No worries my dude, have a good day and enjoy your parm
Kaidus_@reddit
Lmao my girlfriend always says this. I like a lot of parm.
LonePuma@reddit
Just because this moron doesn't know how to cook doesn't mean AI models can't give decent recipes lol
SheepherderBeef8956@reddit
Like with all LLM responses you need to use your judgement to see if it sounds reasonable. It's equally possible OP just sucks at cooking. I've gotten some really good suggestions from ChatGPT when I have no idea what I want to cook, but obviously I know it's going to be good before I start. Otherwise I'd ask for another suggestion.
Particular-Sort-9720@reddit
??? Because it has been proven, repeatedly, that it sucks at it.
space_monster@reddit
I've cooked a bunch of recipes from ChatGPT and they've all been really nice. providing recipes is probably the most piss-easy task imaginable for a language model that's read thousands of recipes
oglop121@reddit
Yeah recipes using LLMs are usually great. It's one of the tasks they really excel at
tommytwolegs@reddit
Yeah I don't know what these people are talking about, they are letting their AI hate cloud their judgement.
snorlaxthelorax@reddit
Its LITERALLY the whole idea for their commercial they keep running. So AI is useless
BrightSaves@reddit
Actually I use chatgpt all the time when I cook. Not for full on recipes, but if I want to make a tweak to something in a dish or if I’ve added too much of an ingredients or forgot a step, I ask chat how to get out of it and it makes really helpful suggestions completely specific to my ratios and ingredients.
I also have a number of recipes I’ve created over the years and I’ve put them into chat to ask how to “chef it up a bit” and most of the time to suggestions are creative and unique.
This does not replace my cookbooks, cooking technique books, or classes I’ve taken, but to say there’s no value in it is simply wrong. You just need to use your judgement and have a baseline of cooking skills to know what to ask and do.
Le_Nabs@reddit
ChatGPT can be a shortcut if you're knowledgeable in a field already, but it can't be trusted if you know nothing about. By the very nature of it being a probability based model, it will mess up sometimes and if you don't know anything about a subject, you don't know how to spot whether it messed up or not. It absolutely isn't the same as visiting recipe sites and looking up recipes that have (for the good ones) been tested to work already, where you can know nothing and be confident that the recipe actually works.
For a complete newbie in a given subject, it cannot and should not be used as a truth box, because it's not what the tool is.
BrightSaves@reddit
Totally agree. I wouldn’t recommend relying on it if you’re just learning to cook but if you’ve reduced a stock too far in a fricassée and just need a quick fix, chat can get you an answer way faster than digging through a cookbook or article (though of course you should start with a cookbook at the top of the recipe!)
There’s always going to be gatekeeping in cooking, and honestly in any hobby, whenever new tech shows up to help people round out their skills. People love to act like the way they learned or the habits they built are the only ‘right’ way to do something.
Le_Nabs@reddit
I mean it's mostly that I consider a 'tool' that can get things wrong and you can't tell what's wrong without prior knowledge to be the worst kind of tool for a beginner at any task. Hence, it should not be considered the same as visiting recipe collection sites and cooking blogs/vlogs if you don't have solid bases in cooking, and if you have solid bases in cooking its use is pretty niche, and basically non-existent if you like coming up with your own food. And we go back to 'it's not the same as googling something and shouldn't be treated the same'
ajver19@reddit
See I'd have assumed that having a baseline of cooking skills would mean you wouldn't need generative ai to cook in the first place.
BrightSaves@reddit
I mean to each their own. I find it helpful in a pinch but as I mentioned, cooking classes and cookbooks are definitely more valuable to me.
ibanezerscrooge@reddit
That's what I've said from the beginning. It's just a glorified search engine. It's nice that it can summarize large amounts of data quickly and that you can talk to it basically like a person, but beyond that it's just a search engine, for the most part. Sure there are some uses that go beyond that, but that feels more like entertainment rather than knowledge sharing. Also, GIGO.
Le_Nabs@reddit
It's not even a search engine, because if you aren't knowledgeable in the subject you're asking it about, you cannot tell whether the answer is correct or not or how wrong it is exactly when it's wrong.
At least with Google search, despite its increasing shittiness, you can vet what sources you're going to use before getting wrong answers. It's a little more effort, but frankly, it's better for you to spend that effort anyways (and before someone bothers me about calculators, doing simple arithmetics in your head is also better for your brain than deferring to the calculator every time)
Frydendahl@reddit
It's doesn't help that the companies behind these technologies have no fucking idea how to monetize them, and have effectively been pushing any and every use case conceivable - including WILDLY inappropriate ones.
xTeixeira@reddit
I mean it's not exactly their fault. How would it stick when virtually all marketing for these tools sell them as a personal assistant? A term that implies human-like knowledge and skill. It won't ever stick until consumer protection agencies worldwide do something about the blatant false advertising.
thePiscis@reddit
Fuck you. I do a decent amount of cooking and use chat gpt to give basic recipes and proportions for making breads and marinades and it has worked exceptionally well. It adjusts the quantities to what I ask it and usually doesn’t tell me its life’s story before the recipe.

Not even the same analogy. Ask your "friend" for another diss! I'm sure it will work this time.
thePiscis@reddit
I mean I don’t use ai for personal therapy discussions or some bullshit, I use it as an efficient source to consume information. I’m flattered though that you think those insults came from chat gpt although that’s not at all what ai sounds like so you might just be a moron.

Shananigan48@reddit
The difference is you seemingly have enough baseline cooking knowledge to probably know when a recipe will be bunk, and proportions are something a fancy calculator can do so that's not a problem here. Chatgpt can't give you social skills though apparently.

Zealousideal_Try2055@reddit
You clearly have no idea how an LLM works, because the exact way it works with probability based on training data it should be able to come up with a good recipe. The probability of an onion being included in a desert is very low, the probability of sugar being in a desert is high.
22stanmanplanjam11@reddit
Okay but that’s terrible because most awful recipes aren’t so bad that they have onion in a dessert.
TrashyLolita@reddit
The "training data" has no goddamn taste buds. It literally can not give good recipes because it doesn't know what shit tastes like. The fact that you think "it won't give onions in a sweet recipe" is the minimum quantifier for a good recipe is insane.
Clankers need to be stopped istg
fhota1@reddit
No it shouldnt. It can get something in the shape of a recipe sure. It probably wouldnt suggest an onion in a dessert for instance. But things like amount of each ingredient and cooking time and temp and preperation of each ingredient do actually matter quite a lot to the final dish and it is extremely likely to fuck those up
layered_dinge@reddit
Right so it turns out if you just take what should “probably” be in a recipe it doesn’t actually work because it’s not that simple
You clearly have no idea how a recipe works
InternationalFig2438@reddit
This is true. But trusting an AI blindly is often not the best idea. Because when you throw enough probabilites at the wall and the quality checker that makes sure responses make sense isn't all the way developed, sometimes the AI says straight up gobbledygook.
TLDR; at this point, AI results shouldn't be blindly trusted. You should have some idea of what a good result looks like, so when you get a bad result you know it's bad.
Aerphen@reddit
I’m pretty sure you’re more likely to find onion than sugar in a desert, just judging by the amount of water it takes to grow. But I’m no expert.
El_Diablo_Feo@reddit
This is the correct take. Have an upvote sir. It's disappointing how most people are too fucking stupid or lazy to use any LLM correctly

kittyonkeyboards@reddit
Chatgpt loves telling people what they want to hear.
So it just told her to throw everything she listed into the pot and hope for the best.
SousVideDiaper@reddit
It's crazy how many people have abandoned human relationships to "date" ChatGPT instead. But maybe lonely narcissists wasting time with that instead of hurting actual people isn't all bad.
hates_stupid_people@reddit
I still think calling it AI was the first big mistake.
It's a chatbot that will "lie" just as easily and confidently as it will present facts. But people with low tech literacy straight up think chatgpt is basically Data from Star Trek. Which is the equivalent of comparing throwing a rock to an interplanetary rocket, or comparing an abacus to a modern smart phone. At a very basic level they can do the same thing, but it's really not the same.
They should have gone with the sci-fi thing of separating more basic SI(simulated intelligence) from "full fledged" AI.
charlesgegethor@reddit
Part of the problem is we continue to anthropomorphize LLM by saying things like "lie". It has no concept of "truth" vs "lie", it takes an input, runs it through the language model to create an output that is associated with the input, and then dumps it back at you. It's almost like it's just one giant lookup table of relating all the words you typed into the prompt and giving you something back.
It has no concept of previous state either; when you add another prompt to the model all that it is doing is combining all previous prompts into one singular prompt and then running it through the language model again.
blarghable@reddit
A good way of describing it is as "text creating software". It's quite good at creating text that looks like something a human might write, but nothing else.
MuscleManRyan@reddit
I saw a comparison on here that I liked, saying how LLM’s are “AI” in the same way that early Pokémon NPC’s were “AI”. There’s nothing approaching actual thought, just making guesses based on the info it has (obviously LLM’s have factors of magnitude more data, but the root concept is similar)
Rafnar@reddit
i think AI is a perfect name, you just gotta remember it's supposed to mimic human intelligence and humans are in general a p dumb bunch.

Did she do it specifically as a joke to see what kind of awful shit the chatbot would suggest? Or is she just stupid?
elksatchel@reddit
Allrecipes has long had a function where you can enter ingredients you have (and exclude common ones you don't) and it will match you with existing recipes. Though I suppose I haven't used it for a while so can't vouch for the website disallowing AI submissions...
lemonylol@reddit
There's an app that does this as well, can't remember what it's called.
Turbulent-Matter501@reddit
They sold out many years ago and this feature was the first thing to go, followed quickly by a whole lot of former daily users. I rarely even visit the site at all any more and I used to spend many hours a week researching recipes on there. I agree with Emm_, it's completely useless now.
Emm_withoutha_L-88@reddit
They tried to make it into a site you have to subscribe to a while back and it's been basically useless since then
disneylovesme@reddit
Whatever is the main ingredient I just pop that into my trusted recipe website budgetbytes and see what populates. Scarping together leftovers into another different meal is a skill you guys need to figure out with experiments (not with a LLM) and maybe content creators. I really like becomingafarmgirl yt she makes a ton of videos of 5 meals with at least half being a base ingredient already cooked. She got me into corn bread as a crust topping. Had pot roast with potatoes and carrots onions one night, used all of the leftovers into a beef pot pie with corn bread on top.

There is ABSOLUTELY something wrong with throwing all that shit into a crockpot and hoping for the best.

Mr_Hobbyist@reddit (OP)
I appreciate the kindness! But honestly, if it makes people feel better about their own lives to berate me and my wife then they can go right ahead as far as we're concerned. We don't care one bit. DoragonJei@reddit
I did not know there was a website for this. I normally just Google the main ingredient and then figure out what I can change (like seasonings or veggies). What's the website called?
Primary-School-4658@reddit
I totally forgot to add it onto my original comment and replied with it way down but it's https://www.supercook.com/#/menu !! I haven't used it in ages so idk if it also uses AI now (rlly hope not) but hope it gets some use ^^!!

Also just learning some basic cooking techniques would give you the tools to put together a few basic ingredients for a meal without a recipe. Not something you can do in one night though.
artemswhore@reddit
yeah, looking at the (assumed) ingredients in here it would’ve made a fine shepherds pie type meal
fangirlsqueee@reddit
We make pretty much this then and put it on top of mashed potatoes.
Browned ground beef, packet of prepared brown gravy, peas-n-carrots can, cream corn can, black pepper, and put the "loaded gravy" on top of (Bob Evans) mashed potatoes. Easy, tasty, and the left overs hold up for a week.
artemswhore@reddit
yeah I was thinking that vs baking it or doing taco seasoning over rice. never would I have assumed I should make crock pot slop

Hmm AI slop or SEO'd food blogs that are still written majority by AI. So many decisions. The amount of times I try looking up a recipe that uses specific ingredients only to find a ton of recipes that use only some of or a lot more of the ingredients I have is obnoxious. LLM recipes suck too but at least you can curate it easier to get ideas to Google
I_stole_this_phone@reddit
Yup. Use this at least 3 times a month. The recipes it collects aren't always the best but it will give me a good idea of what to search for. Helps me use everything in my fridge and saves me money.
zoobs@reddit
I’d love to see the prompt. This is so wild!
Primary-School-4658@reddit
I have a feeling it was just the ingredients with no additional prompts for flavour pallets or anything considering it was all just thrown in a crockpot 😭 Prediction: "ingredients: veggies and meat. tool: one crockpot. make food"
and the ai just said "throw it all together" with no additional steps like browning or cleaning or seasoning etc 😫
El_Diablo_Feo@reddit
No context, details, proper instruction, or structure is my guess. OP's wife is probably an LLM-idiot

Master0fMuppets@reddit
Ignore the haters, I do this all the time. Honestly one of the more uniquely helpful use cases I've found for LLMs so far, but it can absolutely whiff sometimes lol.
But most of the time it's great, especially when you wanna make a recipe but don't quite have the exact set of ingredients necessary, I found out that evaporated milk is a fantastic substitute for coconut milk as a base for curries this way
hellonameismyname@reddit
They should be generally solid at it. Not sure what the hell she promoted it with here

Yeah. I have had awesome luck on my side, totally transformed my cooking by helping me break free from recipes to be able to cook by feel. guff1988@reddit
If you ask specifics and no what a recipe should look like it works fine. I had it give the ratios for a lemon blueberry ice box cake and it was delicious.
If you have no idea what a recipe should look like and you ask too generic of a question you're going to make something shitty.

A couple of years ago I asked it to make me a recipe for healthy edibles and I listed all the ingredients I couldn't consume (as I have a lot of food sensitivities that make finding recipes tedious). It came up with a healthy, low histamine and anti inflammatory breakfast muffin that was so damn good I had to stop myself from eating more than one at a time! It gave me a recipe for canabutter as well which was very successful as it was my first attempt too.
It works out sometimes.

Hi, trained chef here. Because its really good at creating and modifying recipes. Like every other thing that LLMs are good at, you need to know about the subject so you can manually refine the output. OPs wife mustve gone out of her way to generate a dog shit crock pot meal from ChatGPT, seriously impressive.
buck_cram@reddit
I completely agree. We've been using AI for recipe inspiration and think it's super helpful and useful. You just have to get the hang of prompts and refine the output sometimes. We also find it useful for grocery lists: budget is x, need y meals for z people, high protein/low fat, emphasis on Asian and Italian recipes.
Equivalent-Excuse-80@reddit
Chat gpt can be quite reliable if you need a ratio for something, need to break down nutritional macros in a particular recipe, scaling, converting to metric/weight or to imperial/vokume etc.
I wouldn’t depend on it to create a whole dish.
torthBrain@reddit
This is actually one of the only good use cases of LLMs
lemonylol@reddit
Reddit has a huge hate-boner for AI in general and likes to posts these "gotcha" circlejerks. There's another post on the Elden Ring subreddit right now where people are going apeshit over an AI video that has 232 views.
EAsapphire@reddit
It's actually pretty convenient at times if you know how to word your prompts and follow-ups.
I've used it plenty when I have a random assortment of left over vegetables or meats or whatnot. It lets me say "I have these things, what can I make in my Instant Pot?". Then when it spits out ideas, I tweak them. I ask about other ingredients, or ways to combine them in the pot, or if I should add noodles or rice, or a change of spices, etc...
Using ChatGPT or other AI is only as good as the prompts you create.
AnOfficeJockey@reddit
I mean, I have been doing it for some 2-odd years now for a semi restrictive diet I have imposed on myself. Helps that I understand, you know, how to actually fucking cook. But all the recipes it shoots out have been 7+ out of 10.
LordOfTheGam3@reddit
They’re actually really good at recipes. Contrary to what the other replies may say, this is exactly what things like ChatGPT are designed for.

I've succesfully made things using chatGPT. I think some people are idiots.

AdministrationIll96@reddit
Or you suck at making prompts? I mean you can get it to search the internet for high rated recipes and then get it to tailor it to how you want to make it. Cant always trust it if you just ask it question like a search bar but can make it much more useful and efficient than searching the internet yourself. That's like its prime purpose.
psych0ranger@reddit
I've actually used ai for recipes and the number one reason is how god damn annoying online recipe sites are. I've made some damn good chili with an ai recipe. The trick is not to follow the recipe to the letter and to insert your own judgement into the preparation.
Basically it's good insofar as to what ingredients to use
khunter610@reddit
I’ll admit, I tried it after failing to re create my grandmothers potato salad. I couldn’t find any recipes on google that were similar and my attempts just didn’t taste right. So I broke down and told it I needed a recipe for potato salad but it needed ingredients a, b, c and could not have ingredients x, y, z. Let me tell you, it gave me a great recipe that tasted just like my grandmothers. It can work, but I also already know how to make potato salad, so I could tell if it was giving me a legit recipe or not. I think that’s the key here. As long as you know a little about the recipe you’re already making, or a little about cooking, you’ll be fine

wendyd4rl1ng@reddit
It's one of the main ways I use LLMs and they're pretty good at it. I'll tell it what I have in the fridge and ask for a few suggestions for meals to make, then pick one and get a more detailed recipe tailored to my equipment/needs.
I'm a good cook though and know how to properly write the prompt and interpret the results and follow through. OP's gross mush is just a skills issue on the part of their wife.
Cyber_Connor@reddit
It’s still somehow less painful than going on actual receipe sites where you have to read through an auto-biography and your computer gets 9 viruses from the pop-up ads.
I think the reason cookbooks are still popular is because every recipe website it’s pure electronic cancer

This is why you use a crock pot liner. For the recipes that don’t turn out, tie the bag and toss it out.
kaosmoker@reddit
I stopped using liners ever single time ive used a liner they melt around the rim and it worries people when they go to get into the food. I slow cook stuff like red beans and rice with sausage for roughly three days and its way too much to expect from a plastic sheet.
sacheek@reddit
Wow! Yeah I would stop too if they melted. The reynolds brand ones work fine for me for high for 10-12 hours but some store brand ones for us have leaked before because they’re so thin. Sorry to hear you’ve had ones melt before.

I made a chat recipe the other night for the first time. Chicken with pears in white wine sauce. It was actually good! Kinda weird but it was good.

You guys ate it already, then puked?

I use gemini ai to bounce ideas off of to make recipes with ingredients I have. It has gotten me out of many binds but I have been cooking since I could walk so I know better than to do some of the stuff ai recommends. I could see how someone less experienced in the kitchen could easily be persuaded.

This is what happens when you don't drain the ground beef (probably not very mean ground beef too).
translinguistic@reddit
It wasn't only not drained, it sat in there raw. All of that is just floating in beef fat
forogtten_taco@reddit
Idk man. Throw a packet of onion soup mix in there or brown gravy packet. Throw it over noodles. Sure, not fine dinning but would taste just fine for a weeknight dinner

They live in a world of beige - the carpets, the walls, the food and clothing - all beige. Brother I am breaking through that beige with the most beautiful color you’ve ever seen, a slightly darker beige called BROWN.
RaeaSunshine@reddit
Mmmmm goop
forogtten_taco@reddit
You dont "need" to brown everything ti make it taste good. 90% of recipes in crock pots or slowcookers are not browned at the start. I dont know how many slow cooker beef stews or beef roasts iv had that were not browned, but tasted great.
Shhheeeesshh@reddit
Try putting a nice sear on what ever you are cooking next time and get back to us with your results. I’d bet it tastes better.
forogtten_taco@reddit
Thats not what I was saying and you know that.
Yes searing meat and veggies is tasty. Duh. But its not a requirement.
CyEriton@reddit
Nothing is a requirement, suck the goop through a straw, pour it over French toast, put it in a piñata and beat it with a ladle - the choice is yours.
I a big steaming pile of wet goop and see opportunity for great flavor! You see the goop and choose surrender - we are not the same.
Shhheeeesshh@reddit
You sound like the person who was “following” a recipe but decided not to use 6/9 of the ingredients.
“Why doesn’t my pasta sauce taste good? All I did was use ketchup instead of tomato paste and cilantro instead of basil? 😩”
CyEriton@reddit
Yeah browning is how you build a good stew or soup, the Maillard reaction and all of its aromas bring so much flavor. I see a pot of grey mush here and I wonder how to make it great.
I’m a stew man and by golly I’ll turn this frog into a prince if I want to.
Alkao52@reddit
Browning it makes it taste better
forogtten_taco@reddit
Yes, obviously. But you dont NEED to. Its not a requirment.

SparklingLimeade@reddit
There's always someplace in the recipe it fits. Draining the ground meat is weird 90s low-fat-diet propaganda. Use the meat with the fat content you want for proper flavor. If there's other liquid then the pan was too cold or too crowded.

hellonameismyname@reddit

GurlOfYaDreams@reddit
check your privilege at the door sir
hellonameismyname@reddit
It’s just a stupid comment. This is like $10 worth of food. Are they rich because they own that pink towel too?
GurlOfYaDreams@reddit
It's not stupid. People starve to death every day. I don't think you'll truly understand unless you go through it.
hellonameismyname@reddit
I’m not saying it’s stupid because no one goes hungry. It’s just stupid because you could comment this on literally anything?
Like you see a picture of a guy in a t shirt and be like “wow you must be rich because that t shirt must have cost $10!” It’s just meaningless
GurlOfYaDreams@reddit
That's not even true and it shows you have a misconception about the actual issue. Food waste is a lot different than wearing a shirt, or owning a towel. It's what you do with the items that makes it worth calling out.
If said person was tearing the shirt apart, when it could have been donated to charity? Yeah, that's applicable.
Simply owning a shirt? No.
hellonameismyname@reddit
You would say someone is rich if they ripped a $10 shirt?
GurlOfYaDreams@reddit
If they can carelessly spare the shirt, then yes, they're privileged enough to own it. If you pay attention, I never said the word 'rich'. I said privileged, which is much different.
hellonameismyname@reddit
It’s literally the entire comment we’re discussing.
GurlOfYaDreams@reddit
...and that wasn't me who said that.
Believe it or not, I'm my own person.
hellonameismyname@reddit
If you disagree with that comment then what even is your point?
GurlOfYaDreams@reddit
The point is the point I was making, which was that if bare needs necessities are unnecessary for you, and you choose to waste them instead of donating them or leaving them for the less fortunate, you are unethical, and privileged.
Let's not act like that wasn't the sentiment from the beginning. Just because you cherry picked the word 'rich', doesn't mean it was used in its literal form. If you have to argue semantics to make a point, you do not have a point.
hellonameismyname@reddit
The original statement was that one needs to be rich to spend $10 on food and not eat if
GurlOfYaDreams@reddit
Looks like you have no points left to make.

Lol ChatGPT is wild. I've taken cooking "tips" from it a few times and each time it tells you things with such immense confidence and authority. Each time it was mediocre at best.
But same thing applies with pretty much everything I've used it for short of writing related stuff. It's pretty decent at that.
Definitely do not discuss your financial challenges with it hoping it can offer you some magical solutions though. It would have walked me into totally unnecessary credit dings if I were not super skeptical about it to begin with. Some combination of jarred alfredo sauce, beef stock, ground beef, corn, and sweet potato. Doesn't seem like it should have turned out as badly as it did.
lincolnmustang@reddit
Seems like there's a way to make those ingredients work, but this ain't it.
Neat_Bed_9880@reddit
How?
Given those ingredients the only possible outcome is a cluster fuck.
lincolnmustang@reddit
I would think just browning/searing the beef before throwing it in the pot would help a bit. Some herbs or an onion would go a long way too.
To be clear, I wouldn't put these ingredients together, but if you're on Chopped and this is what you get in your basket you could make it work better than what's pictured.

Is this bait? Did you follow the recipe to a T? Judging by the amount of fat I’d wager you skipped that part. I also got I should add tomato paste (which the recipe seems lacking).

My brother wanted to make fried rice. He provided ChatGPT a list of leftovers in the fridge to see if it would make a good fried rice. AI gave him a resounding "Yes! Here's how you do it!"
It was the most ungodly combination of mashed potatoes, rice, eggs, carrots, and soysauce(??) I have ever beheld. I did not eat it. No sane human would make such a concoction unless it was for a joke.

She mostly definitely did. Everyone in this thread has some psycho AI hate boner. Ai is very good at giving you useable recipes. The fundamentals of a cooking are pretty stagnant. If you give it the right info in your prompt it’s pretty good at spitting out a decent recipe. Tell it what tools you have and what ingredients you have and it’ll give a solid recipe. Unless you’re a complete beginner or just straight up horrible at cooking you should be able to figure out if something is wrong.

I’m questioning whether anyone in this thread understands cooking. AI is quite good at creating recipes. Cooking has very basic fundamentals that if you follow them will 9/10 create good food. It’s not a fine dining machine - but for 99.9% of people it can create you a decent pasta dish with what you have in your pantry and fridge. It’s not gonna give you some whacky output like add the pasta then put 9lbs of baking soda and vinegar and a hot pepper.

You might have been able to salvage that into a soup. Looks like the ground beef was raw and it's all sitting in a pool of liquid and rendered fat. You could strain it, doctor it up a bit, and turn it into something like a janky Italian wedding soup.

I've been cooking and baking with chatgpt for over 2,5 years now. I've learned alot to the point I can openy own bistro. Its recipes are great if you know what to ask for, know the basics of cooking and baking and have a taste, or at least know how to mix flavours and textures in the first place. For people without basic knowledge of any cuisine, just use Thermomix at this point.
lonely_lad567@reddit
AI has never tasted food. ground beef, sweet potatoes, corn. Protein, carbs, fats, vitamin a and c, potassium, magnesium and antioxidants. the human body could certainly survive indefinitely on this slop but AI will never understand what it is to taste food.
Sickpup831@reddit
To be fair, ground beef and sweet potato go excellent together, it’s about how you prepare it. The main problem with this meal is not the ingredients.
hkun89@reddit
Lmao what are you talking about. AI doesn't need to know what food tastes like. Even if "it" could comprehend what flavor is, thats not even how it works. It's trained on text data so it's scraping recipes from all over the Internet. I think OP is just new to cooking.
ChampionImpossible36@reddit

iamaiimpala@reddit
What do you think these LLMs were trained on?
hashandslack@reddit
I know that they scrape the internet for recipes for training, its just obvious that like with most things, ai doesnt have the capacity to understand what its doing, it just makes something that looks passably like a recipe. Me as well.
I tell ChatGPT to "Cook with me" so it's more of a back and fourth with questions and me answering. I also use it to help me with food pairing and substitutions. It works quite well. I have a simple dinner roll recipe it's helped me perfect over several months that we literally use twice a week. I had some left over pumpkin puree and told it I wanted to make pumpkin waffles, they turned out amazing.
The caveat is you have to have some idea how to cook in the first place or at the very least ask it for steps if it's something you aren't familiar with. By default it will usually just spit out a list of ingredients.

I’m glad someone else thought this too. I mean…it can get wonky sometimes, but I’ve gotten some good results from it. I use it for ideas, but I run them through my own sanity check.
I also use it for food costs, and that works out fairly well. Like my own little commercial kitchen.
TheHammy_Sammich@reddit
Ill have some ideas that I run by it to help me figure out how to make them, my favorite one was kind of like a creme brulee cream cheese spread because I thought it'd go great with the Costco French toast bagels

I see what went wrong, you forgot to ask it to taste its work for proper seasoning. Not enough salt but plenty of tears.
shaard@reddit
Jesus Herbert Christ! That looks painfully awful.
I HAVE used ChatGPT maybe a dozen times for recipes, but I suspect because I have SOME idea of how to cook, what works well, and what doesn't, that I'm able to get the recipe suggestions into a reasonable state. I've made some really good soups and stews with its help.
Where this went off the rails, I have no idea.

PeachsBigJuicyBooty@reddit
She should've asked for links, ChatGPT doesn't "think" so if not explicitly told to cite sources, it'll literally just make stuff up using somewhat related knowledge to continue the conversation.
It's deliberately coded to avoid saying "I don't know", you gotta make sure what it does say comes from a human.
Tomboney@reddit
Did chat GPT even fuck it up? This entire pot is full of ground beef, carrots, and corn, and nothing else. what fucking meal can you even make with those 3 random ass ingredients

In my experience, LLMs are better for taking a recipe and calculating all the nutrition information like fiber, sodium, potassium, etc. You can have it link to all of the government regulatory food database entries it uses for that.
I found it useful for taking a recipe, telling it to substitute an ingredient and then getting the updated nutrition information instantly.
This is basically all I did with a 1 month trial of Gemini. Definitely wouldn't continue pay for it though.
