The video doesn’t do the noise justice.

Are these rare? That might explain my dad showing me one on the flightline back in the day.

Me as private pilot:
Cool..... oh no fuel costs... oh no 2x fuel costs!!!

30 minutes ago I was looking them up on TAP. It's my grail plane and I had a Piper Comanche which was awesome

I would never comprehend why millionaires prefer yachts or jets above this marvelous machine.

They are not comfortable airplanes at all. I have a couple hundred hours in a 337 and I'll die happy if I don't set foot in another.
Specialist_Reality96@reddit
It's a slow cold rattly old shitbox that can only land at GA airports that are poorly service with things like car hire or other transport options.
For the cost of keeping on and entirely dependent on how often the person flies com air or charter is likely cheaper and faster. The person doesn't need to upkeep any licenses and during the transit time can make phone calls drink sleep etc.
Something like this would be for the enthusiast and similar to cars a lot of people don't really give a rats and just want to get where they are going the easiest way possible.

It's an Air Force O-2 if I ever saw one.

Such a sweet thing, saw my first one a few weeks ago over LA. Love it!

Around 1997 I was working at a small GA airport in Palm Beach FL. One of the mechanics there flew a Skymaster. I had just finished fueling an airplane as he was making a pass over the field. I got on top of the fuel truck and he buzzed maybe 50 feet over me.
Cauvinus@reddit (OP)
Such a low pass at takeoff power must’ve sounded quite impressive!
ArcusInTenebris@reddit
It was, though he had already taken off and was looping back over the field to head the other direction.

Very cool plane. Do you have to have a single prop license or a double prop, because it is a lot more like a single prop in flight characteristics, I assume, than a double prop with an engine on each wing? How fast does it fly? What are the benefits of this over a single prop? I have so many questions.
Zealousideal-Lie7255@reddit
I didn’t realize this plane had been around for such a long time. It was first introduced in the 1960’s.
Themagicdick@reddit
A lot of general aviations planes flying are from around 1960-1980

It requires the MEL but if will be limited to “centerline thrust”. You would have to take a checkride to add a regular multi engine.

You do need a dual engine cert to fly one as well. As for why a push/pull setup I'm not sure, but I bet there's a reason you don't see this design often.

The yaw moment from an engine out is reduced by a very large margin. The cons are that while they are the same engine, one is way more effective at the other as the rear one only gets turbulent air and the cooling kinda sucks. Also really hard to find out if the rear engine quit in critical phases of flight. It's also just unique so everything is a bit more expensive.

It really is the safest twin out there as far as single engine ops. Years ago I flew one for Air Coordinator for firefighting. More recently, I flew a pressurized model just for a test flight. As a passenger, my biggest problem is that you are in a “noise sandwich” between the two engines. Not a matter of decibels as much as vibration. And operationally, as stated above, cooling problems with the aft engine. Still a nice plane to fly and it looks like a Bat-mobile!
Cauvinus@reddit (OP)
Definitely agree on the looks. I’ve also read somewhere about flying on one engine to extend loiter time, I assume the front engine would be the preferred one in this case.

Nice looking paint job too!
