What happened to all the clear college stickers that used to rest across the middle of rear windows?

They were hauled away to salvage yards on the back windows of ancient Volvos during Cash for Clunkers.
Delta-IX@reddit
Oh, the fuck up the used car market program?
whyisthissticky@reddit
This is too funny. We donated our Volvo 240 to one of those clunkers for kids orgs. We then saw our car out on the road 5 years later identifiable by my brother’s and my clear college stickers still on the window.
Twizad@reddit
We sold ours for $500 with 500,000 miles after my dad removed all the high mileage club medallions.
warm_sweater@reddit
Ugh a 240 in good condition is such a great car. Always loved the boxy look of it.
El-Royhab@reddit
is a love for boxy cars a xennial trait? because I sure love me a car with sharp angles and wood paneling.
daydreamersunion@reddit
We donated our 1987 Volvo 240DL to a local charity after they asked for a car for a person in need. We had the car fully serviced and dropped her off.
Turns out the managers daughter was the one "in need" Identified definitely by the ghosts of college stickers markings that we had scraped off lol
Mooseandagoose@reddit
Omg. Yes! My 1988 Volvo 740 definitely was hauled off with my Alma mater clear sticker attached to my rear windshield, in 2006.
Ultimate_Driving@reddit
Thanks. Now I'll have their jingle stuck in my head for another week.
Fit_Leek_86@reddit
RIP Affordable used cars!
eyeb4lls@reddit
Off topic but fuck Cash for Clunkers. I had a great run of used ugly Volvos for a while but now they are all gone.
Foxy_locksy1704@reddit
Me too! I had a ‘96 and ‘97 4 door sedans and then I had an ‘05 station wagon. I LOVED them I would give anything to have my ‘97 back that car was amazing it got me to college, my internship, my two jobs and despite being a sedan was amazing in the heavy snow we get in my state.
DrMcJedi@reddit
CFC threw out all the Volvos, Hondas, Pontiacs, and Saabs that kept generations of high schoolers company…
Upbeat_Tear3549@reddit
Yeah, I agree.
mtbguy1981@reddit
You mean Toyota Avalons?
Dazzling-Hornet-7764@reddit
Oh god I feel seen!
mvpilot172@reddit
Mine was an Honda Accord with 185k miles on it.
Silver-Release8285@reddit
I’m dying. That’s EXACTLY where mine went. It was a Volvo.
ZealousidealSea2034@reddit
I miss de-icing my flip up lights 😂
arcxjo@reddit
I just want a giant mirror to show all the fucktards behind me what their LED headlights look like to civilized people.
SpaceLemur34@reddit
I had one when I was in college, but switched to a plate frame. After it broke in an accident, I never replaced it because I went to a small school that's now 1200 miles away.
Aqueous_Ammonia_5815@reddit
My first car, a 1987 Oldsmobile had one on it already that said STARFLEET ACADEMY
gerardkimblefarthing@reddit
There were others I saw with Vulcan Science Academy stickers 😁
rwa2@reddit
Ferengi Business School cars were to be avoided
rwa2@reddit
Greetings! I was the Sentra with the Borg Institute of Technology window sticker. Hope your assimilation was satisfactory.
Champ_5@reddit
It is only logical
NoodleDoodleGirl@reddit
I had a 91 Olds that had “Try LSD” permanently written on the back and a peeling PSU sticker on the window.
sj_forever@reddit
Haha are you me?
JackSpadesSI@reddit
That makes me so happy.
wintercast@reddit
yup. i had the one too
eggs_erroneous@reddit
That's actually dope as shit
whyiwhat@reddit
I still have mine. 🫣
johnvalley86@reddit
Due to inflation stickers now cost $235. But they come with a free lunch!
GeekFatale@reddit
They still exist, just less so outside of college towns. I work at my alma mater, see them around town, and have received 2 stickers since I started working here.
My original one was on the back of my Mini Cooper when it got totaled.
jp112078@reddit
I’m of the opinion that any sticker you put on your car (besides those required by law) will be lame and aged very quickly. From “baby on board” to college bragging to the silly stick figure family ones to the Calvin pissing on a (for some reason) rival car company. They’re all stupid
Designer-Bid-3155@reddit (OP)
I fancy my upside-down pineapple that says... plays well with others...
jp112078@reddit
That’s at least sending a message/request rather than boasting about having 3 kids or that you have a baby on board and think we should care while they speed down the road on their phone (side note: those signs were made to alert OTHER drivers that the sign carrying driver may be distracted)
Purring4Krodos@reddit
I had one in 1996 on my 1986 Plymouth Horizon. It said "Your College Sucks".
unomasme@reddit
Ugh, my first car was a Plymouth Horizon. Man I would love to drive one again!
Purring4Krodos@reddit
I loved that car. It was totally impractical for Wisconsin winters and I didn't care. I worked at the mall and would close most nights, then go whip some shitties around the unplowed icey areas of the parking lots with a Marb Red hanging out of my mouth with the Adam Sandler CD blaring 🥀 I was a total heathen and loved every second.
TrinityKilla82@reddit
They were replaced with goofy stick figure family stickers.
Aqueous_Ammonia_5815@reddit
I think even that is considered old now
SoupIsNotAMeal@reddit
When did the micturating Calvin become a thing? Because I hate it.
hacksawomission@reddit
Those have been around since the 90s at least. You know, ten or so years now.
TruckFudeau22@reddit
1997 was exactly 10 years ago.
Aggravating-Key-8867@reddit
I have never seen the word "micturating" written before and I've only ever heard it said in The Big Lebowski.
SensitiveArtist@reddit
Did I urinate on your rug, sir?
_Water_Store_Remark_@reddit
No, like I said Woo peed on my rug
HopelesslyHuman@reddit
You think the rug pissers did this?
gerardkimblefarthing@reddit
Well, we just don't know, Dude.
TrinityKilla82@reddit
I guess the I EAT ASS sticker replaced the stick figures? 🤪
YogurtclosetDull2380@reddit
Or 'Baby Up In This Bitch'
reapersritehand@reddit
Or OF qr codes
ammodramussavannarum@reddit
It’s the AR families now, at least here in the south.
Glendale0839@reddit
These stickers were everywhere when I was a kid, the full range of colleges from the local 2 year county college to Ivy League.
These days on the very rare occasions I see them, it’s almost always an Ivy League sticker on the back of an expensive German SUV driven by someone in the age 55+ demographic.
Funwithfun14@reddit
That's what I see too. Or other prestigious schools.
fromthedarqwaves@reddit
I used to sport my Highschool name across the back but once I moved away from my home state, no one would know or care what Booker T. Washington means, unless they thought I was a big fan of the guy himself. As for my various colleges I’d need 4 stickers for those.
Funwithfun14@reddit
I recall it being mostly an undergrad thing.
justbecoolguys@reddit
I was just talking to someone about this—they just kind of disappeared. I remember getting one with my college acceptance package, so I wonder if that stopped being a thing. I also see fewer stickers on cars in general. And cars are significantly more expensive now than in the 90s. I had stickers all over my beater car in HS. Now, not so much.
nvmls@reddit
Yeah I don't think anyone paid for theirs, I certainly didn't.
Funwithfun14@reddit
Got mine as a present. Bookstore sold them for $1.50.
cranberries87@reddit
I’m actually seeing more stickers on cars now, but they’re smaller decals of national parks, vacation locales, elementary schools, clubs, random things like that.
Conscious_Home_4253@reddit
They still make them. I have my daughter’s school sticker on my rear window. I will be adding a second one below it, soon.
FairNeedleworker9722@reddit
There's no money for cars anymore.
Aetherometricus@reddit
That was 3 cars ago and poor opsec.
cranberries87@reddit
I’m in the south. I never see the decals anymore, and had semi-forgotten about them. But I see oodles and oodles of college license plate covers; I think that’s the new thing.
I still see tons of stickers on cars, but they’re small decals promoting clubs, marathons/half marathons (the 13.whatever and 26.whatever, even an 0.0 one from time to time), Ironman, their kids’ elementary school, National parks, all kinds of stuff.
lindini@reddit
It might be regional but in the Midwest they have been replaced by vinyl stickers of a more individual interest. People used to take pride in a degree because it set them apart. Now people take pride in their fandoms and faiths because it makes them part of something.
cranberries87@reddit
I see this in the south where I live too.
garden__gate@reddit
Bumper stickers are less common than they used to be in general!
SoupIsNotAMeal@reddit
Except for those black and white oval ones with inscrutable abbreviations.
PhoneJazz@reddit
Those came from European country abbreviation car stickers, I don’t think they use those on cars in the EU anymore.
CrotalusHorridus@reddit
Like PCB
Are you a regular visitor to Panama City Beach
Or were your brains fried by polychlorinated biphenyls?
SBMoo24@reddit
And the ones that tell people you like running much too far.
Ultimate_Driving@reddit
Or maybe they're a big fan of printed circuit board chips.
canisdirusarctos@reddit
This is actually what I'd assume first.
belligerent_pickle@reddit
I actually am and your comment made me laugh
wino_whynot@reddit
Why not both?
canisdirusarctos@reddit
It’s the second one. Always the second one.
Octavya360@reddit
I have one that says RL
YogurtclosetDull2380@reddit
Gonna go ahead and disagree with you there.
garden__gate@reddit
Maybe it’s a regional thing but I just see a lot fewer than I used to.
BugEquivalents@reddit
I drive like a dick sometimes and wouldn’t want my vehicle to be identifiable with a sticker 😂
Ok_Land_38@reddit
Same. 😂
Corn_Beefies@reddit
My brother put one on his Acura that says, "I throw my used car batteries in the ocean." We live in Colorado.
On_my_last_spoon@reddit
Yeah, I didn’t mind them on my old clunkers but my nice new $46k suv I ain’t putting any stickers on her!
rifunseeker@reddit
Not based on the pickup trucks I see in my area.
BonerDeploymentDude@reddit
We grew up
Littlepastaboy@reddit
People used to be proud of college now they realize it's a scam
the-cookie-momster@reddit
They disappeared when going to college put me in debt for the rest of my adult life.
Ultimate_Driving@reddit
I absolutely hate the college I went to, and don't want anyone to know I willingly went there.
Virian@reddit
Liberty?
Octavya360@reddit
I like the school I went to and got a good education, but their reputation has tanked big time in the last ten years due to questionable marketing practices and other things. So I don’t want anyone knowing I went there either.
Cake_Donut1301@reddit
The family cars have rear wipers now.
professorpumpkins@reddit
Magnets are big now, too.
bluev0lta@reddit
I saw one on a car last week! It was ‘something mom’ but i couldn’t make out the college reference/name. That was a throwback for sure.
Ztunyknum@reddit
I had one in 2022.
lis-emerald@reddit
🙋🏻♀️ still have mine 😂
augustwest30@reddit
The UV would turn the clear plastic brittle and brown. The plastic would flake off leaving half of the college name still stuck to the glass.
paperclipbandit@reddit
I had one I bought at a head shop circa 1999-2001 that said Psychedelic State.
Deepcoma_53@reddit
Y’all went to college???
Inevitable_Channel18@reddit
They still exist
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Ultimately it was nothing to be proud of when real life hit
RealityOk9823@reddit
Saw a Honda with "Powered by Honda" on the front the other day. Haven't seen that in forever. Still think it's dumb as hell.
schultz100@reddit
They have been replaced by magnets. They are less permanent than bumper stickers and don’t block your view like window decals. If you go to a university bookstore you will see they still have a few window decals but it is mostly magnets that you put on your trunk or bumper.
SemicolonGuitars@reddit
Just bought one this summer from my alma mater and put it in the back window of my car. I feel very conspicuous and uneasy.
tabrazin84@reddit
…mine is still on my car. Where it’s been since 2006. Now I’m having an existential crisis that I’m going to have peel the sticker off my Subaru when it bites the dust.
JuliusSeizuresalad@reddit
No one can afford to attend college anymore
refplan@reddit
Well, it’s on the rear quarter window but I am holding it down with my 1995 vintage sticker in my Volvo station wagon. I think that’s a bingo.
alphabetikalmarmoset@reddit
Maybe the colleges stopped selling them in their campus gift shops.
xRVAx@reddit
A lot of campus "book stores" went out of business
nitrot150@reddit
I still have one on my ‘91 Nissan pathfinder !
Silver-Release8285@reddit
In NY I got a ticket for mine. Apparently any sticker in the window is illegal now.
conversion_disorder@reddit
The actual logo on mine absorbed enough solar energy that it crumbled to dust, within maybe 6 years. It was a dark color so maybe that wouldn't kill all of them, but not a unique design problem...
gerardkimblefarthing@reddit
People realized no one cares where they went to college and trying to impress people that way makes one a douche. Also they switched out for college logo stickers instead of the full name spelled out.
BeeBeeDrinkDrink@reddit
Exactly. I had a Harvard one in the back of my beat up Ford Tempo in high school. All I did was visit the school gift shop on a field trip.
Expensive-Day-3551@reddit
How funny that I haven’t seen one in forever.
figment1979@reddit
I might be wrong, but I feel like more and more cars these days have tinted rear windows, making these types of stickers rather obsolete since nobody would see them.
ConfidentBother6@reddit
Yes I bought one when my oldest started college but took it right down since it was invisible through the tint
Felinius@reddit
I dunno but I was thinking about the parody ones a while back, and looking for the Star Trek and horror ones XD
soopirV@reddit
My mom was so mad that I dropped out that she attacked my rear window with a razor blade to remove the sticker (she’s truly loco). She got the sticker but also took out my rear defrost, kinda useful in upstate NY.
desertdweller2011@reddit
now people express their personalities on their water bottles and/or laptops
XennialQueen@reddit
Now I see “COLLEGE NAME” mom or dad
sorrymizzjackson@reddit
I had two on my first and second cars. I was frankly just pretty happy I got to go to college (I was over 25 and had to wait for student aid because my parents wouldn’t sign). They did suck though because they turn brown and rot off due to the sun. I sold my first car with it on there and that reminds me that I probably need to go and scrape off the remnants of it on my second car even though it was a “newer” logo version and not the long one. The cheap tint will be jacked though, so it’s not a priority.
My first car was a repo from Florida. I looked in the back window one day driving only to discover a fully formed punisher logo burnt into my tint.
MartialBob@reddit
I used to have a lot of random stickers like that in my back window and they do not age well. Also getting rid of them can end up damaging your window a little.
rharper38@reddit
I replaced mine with a license plate cover. I was always afraid it would screw up the rear defrost. It's not like the name recognition is getting me anywhere 3 people in my neighborhood went to that college, and we barely talk
Away-Quantity928@reddit
I live in college town and they have been replaced by Greek letters designating wherever they pay for friends.
Ive_Got_No_Control@reddit
Ooh ooh I know this one! I bought a sticker for my car when I graduated in 02. It's in my glove box lol. The college has changed names so that sticker doesn't exist anymore, now I just keep it for nostalgia
Slippery-Pete76@reddit
You’re now supposed to get your rival’s logo with Calvin peeing on it.
cubanito_nj@reddit
I drove from NJ to Knoxville to Birmingham to New Orleans last summer and I noticed them a lot in the south but I def don’t see them as much anymore in the NJ/NYC area
Purring4Krodos@reddit
When I lived down south in the late 00s-early '10s it was like this, along with stick figure families, the drivers initials in giant monogram, and the flip flop stickers.
modernhedgewitch@reddit
My guess is they are like $35 a piece on the school shop site.
usernames_suck_ok@reddit
Still do. Might just depend where you live. Especially people who are sports fans of teams from their alma mater--we have those "bad boys." (Mocking you "bad boys" users, to be clear)
Plastic-Sentence9429@reddit
They only worked on station wagons.
heyitscory@reddit
I got a UC Berkeley one when Party City was going out of business.
