Do you remember having 2 keys for your car?

One for the locks and one for the ignition. I saw someone else's post that had keys in the photo and it unlocked this memory for me.
E-2theRescue@reddit
Yup. Had a '91 Honda Accord that needed a different key for the trunk. Miss that car... Bought it from someone who fixed it up after an engine fire, and it still kept going another 200k miles. That thing held up a lot of my best years in life.
johndicks80@reddit
86 Monte Carlo SS! Rusty but I loved it.
Deepcoma_53@reddit
Round is door, square is ignition.
No-Search8409@reddit
Still do for both of my Camaros 83 Z28 (my first car) and my 98 Z28!
cobalt-radiant@reddit
First car was a 1987 Chevy S10. Definitely remember two keys! Round for the door, square for the ignition.
Google_IS_evil21@reddit
Almost all domestic cars up until the early nineties had that? I had a 1986 Ford Aerostar with the same setup. Boy that thing was lame and could barely get out of it's own way.
taleofbenji@reddit
Yes. My parents' suburban had this exact set.
What I remember most about that car is how you had to SLAM the doors shut.
Hurryupslowdownbar20@reddit
Don’t forget the lock-de-icer….
TransportationOk657@reddit
Yep, my 1988 Chevy Celebrity did. One for the ignition. One for the doors and trunk!
noonesaidityet@reddit
Also an 88 Celebrity, of the metallic shit brown variety.
RoundTheBend6@reddit
If only marketing could've used that term. Perfect description.
Octavya360@reddit
I had a mid-80s Oldsmobile Ciera, same shit brown. It was my grandma’s car so it was no frills. It did have an aftermarket radio installed because my grandma didn’t even want a radio when she ordered it. Also had no horsepower and it had an aftermarket mechanical cruise control that worked poorly on hilly terrain.
darkmoonshinesbright@reddit
It’s called a valet key. One key allows just the starting of the car. The other one is just a regular key, which allows everything. Did someone post this already. I really can’t believe you all don’t know what a valet key is, but I am from another time.
KinderSpirit@reddit
The Ford version was 1 key for doors and ignition, the other for the trunk and glove box.
unomasme@reddit
That makes more sense based on my understanding of why there were 2 keys… you only give the valet the door/ignition key, so then they can’t snoop in the trunk or glove box. Lines up with my parents paranoia that everyone is rummaging through their stuff.
063anon@reddit
my ford trucks were always one for the doors the other for ignition
Whiz_with@reddit
Best part about the Celebrity keys was that I could open the door and start the car of my cousins Celebrity. My beauty of a blue on blue Celebrity also would hit 15 mph just switching into gear without even hitting the gas.
lithiumflame@reddit
Ha, our 86 Celebrity did the same thing!
TiEmEnTi@reddit
Three of my friends had 92 Toyota Camrys, same deal. One of them you could take the key out of the ignition and it would stay running
WHRocks@reddit
I had a car that was like this, so it was perfect to teach a few friends how to drive a manual, lol.
TheDarkWave@reddit
Dude, my first car was an 89 Chevy Celebrity. Great gas mileage, really easy to steer, a fuckin tank, that thing.
FlatRooster4561@reddit
My 85 celeb did too!
elphaba00@reddit
My husband’s first car was a white 85 Celebrity. His dad bought it at an auction. It was a fleet car for the power company. That car was ugly, but it could never be killed
Aetherometricus@reddit
A GM will run like shit longer than most cars will run.
Wrex_n_effect@reddit
I loved my ‘85 two tone, 2 door Eurosport 🤙🏽
sexyass2627@reddit
My 93 Lumina did.
VelvetFog82@reddit
1988 Chevy Celebrity was my first car in high school in 1999. Had so much fun with and inside that car. Them back seats was plush like a couch.
donku83@reddit
Hot and fresh out the kitchen?
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
My 1985 LeBaron had a key for the trunk, and a key for the ignition/doors.
BugEquivalents@reddit
My first car was also an 88 Celebrity. Not sure if everyone’s did this, but mine allowed me to start the ignition and then pull the key out.
ViceroyFizzlebottom@reddit
my wife had an 82 celebrity hat let you remove the keys from the ignition after starting it up.
Flashy-Carpenter7760@reddit
And sometimes gas cap
Icantevenhavemyname@reddit
And don’t forget the valet key.
trammeloratreasure@reddit
'86 Celebrity owner here. We should start a sub Reddit.
gunslinger_006@reddit
Came to post this. We had a late 80s celebrity and it had these exact keys.
GreedyRaisin3357@reddit
'93 Buick Century had these and it was the first car I ever bought
bigdickedbat@reddit
That was my best buds first car and we put that thing thru the ringer! The roof liner was ripped out and we graffitied the whole inside.
Whiz_with@reddit
It was a battle between the roof liner and the paint job to see which would go first!
EddieLobster@reddit
For me it was the paint on the roof.
Fighterhayabusa@reddit
I had no idea so many had this as their first car, too! I had an 83 celebrity for my first car, and I remember joking that it was as old as me!
pojospages@reddit
My first car was a blue 84 celebrity! Loved that car
Healthy-Neat-2989@reddit
I loved driving my Stepmom’s celebrity. I could pack so many people in that thing and the steering was a dream!
fluffhead77@reddit
YES!! My 86 celebrity you could steer with one finger
echochilde@reddit
My husband recently inherited his uncle’s old Yukon, and it threw me off for a second when I went to drive it. I’d completely forgotten about the separate keys thing.
Sweet-Sale-7303@reddit
I was given my dad's 89 Chevy celebrity for my first car. It's what I learned to drive in. Eventually the computer died 3 times and we had to get rid of it.
Walls_Feruson@reddit
And they looked just like those
neo_neanderthal@reddit
I actually had three for one of them. The trunk, the ignition, and a spare ignition key in my wallet. Even when cars went down to one key for the whole thing, I always kept a spare in my wallet. Saved my ass once when my "main" key snapped in the lock in middle-of-nowhere Wyoming; I would have not had a good time if I hadn't been able to pull the spare right out and keep on going.
Mental_Medium3988@reddit
i have a vehicle with 4. doors, ignition, fuel, and hood.
darkmoonshinesbright@reddit
The second key is called a valet key. It only starts the car. The other key does everything. You never had to have two keys. The valet key was like an upgrade, which seemed fancy back in the day.
ammonthenephite@reddit
Yup! First car was a gutless 4cyl 1985 ford mustang. Had both keys. My dad's 1958 f150 and the 84 chevy suburban also had them. Every car we had after those though went to just one ignition key and an electronic fob for the doors.
BlindMouse2of3@reddit
I still have some of those blanks 🤣
Rabbitrules87@reddit
Yup. Still do. Love the older cars.
TheDarkWave@reddit
I'm 40 and I used to have an 89 Buick Riviera as my second car after my 89 Celebrity bit it but nowadays I still kinda want that Buick Riviera back
Rabbitrules87@reddit
Well look around, maybe you’ll get lucky.
TheDarkWave@reddit
They go from 10 to 20 grand nowadays, I mean, it isn't bad but still quite a chunk of change.
Rabbitrules87@reddit
True. But 10 was close to what I paid for my 95 Z28. It was worth it. And who said project cars had to be old muscle cars? Maybe you could find something that needs a little bit of work to bring that price down.
scottasin12343@reddit
2002 Tacoma, I have 4 keys... Ignition, doors, passenger airbag on/off, and tailgate.
I gotta guess its not factory stock, tailgate should be the same as doors, and I would have to guess the airbag switch was at one point the door or ignition key too.
scottasin12343@reddit
when you're buying used you take what you get.
Rabbitrules87@reddit
Four keys? My, aren’t we the over achiever 😂
Sufficient-Royal1538@reddit
Same. My daily driver is a late 80’s suburban.
sentient_fox@reddit
Same!
Bloo_Orchid@reddit
My dad had an 83 Oldsmobile that I grew up in. I fucking hated that car. It definitely had the two different keys.
ccroy2001@reddit
My 1st car was a Toyota Pickup and having 1 key was so nice.

Oldsmobile Delta 88
worksnake@reddit
I remembered which one was which by saying to myself, out loud, nearly every single time: "Square for door." I haven't thought of separate car keys in a really long time, that's a fun Sunday bit of nostalgia!
PhenomenallyAdequate@reddit
Hmm. I always heard “Square to start, oval to open”
non_clever_username@reddit
Wait….Isn’t square for door wrong?
I thought square was for ignition and round was for doors and trunk.
Or am I still asleep and missing some opposite joke? Or is my memory just shit? All are possibilities…lol
Freightshaker000@reddit
For my '70 Chevelle, the square was door and ignition.
mosh_pit_nerd@reddit
That’s correct.
ronchee1@reddit
worksnake@reddit
I believe square for door is correct. I'd be surprised to hear otherwise. I have remembered a thing with only two options the wrong way before, but I don't think this is one of them.
non_clever_username@reddit
Could have varied by car of course, but I’m about 95% sure every car I ever had with two keys had the square one be the ignition.
That does seem like some random thing some car company might have tried to flip at one point just to be different though, so maybe we’re both right, who knows.
Could have varied by country too for that matter. You from the US? I knew pretty much zilch about day-to-day life in other countries before the internet came around.
AlienDelarge@reddit
I always remembered it by the lock plate was round in the doors and the ignition looks square from the drivers seat from the wings on the side of the key.
nomptonite@reddit
Square was ignition, round was the doors.
chocki305@reddit
Iirc. It was all access key (square) and a valet key.
The valet key didn't work on the glove box, center console, or trunk. Only doors and ignition.
non_clever_username@reddit
Wait, the square key worked in everything? TIL if true. I guess I never bothered trying it anywhere else because I just thought it was ignition only.
I do question the round key being fully a valet key though. I definitely remember using the round key to open the trunk. At least I think I do..lol
Could be over the years and different manufacturers that the functions of each varied slightly too.
Maybe we’re all right and the functions of the keys were just inconsistent.
chocki305@reddit
I could be wrong on the trunk part.
I know the valet key didn't open the glove box or center console.
chrisfinazzo@reddit
knivesofsmoothness@reddit
That's what i thought as well. Round for door.
worksnake@reddit
Holy crap, you're right:
I absolutely remember thinking "square for door" but I am also very, very weird as far as my internal monologue. So, I probably had a thing where I remember thinking "square for door...no" or some nonsense like that. Especially after trying to unlock the door a bunch of times with the wrong key lol.
Thanks for saying something! Memory is weird!
non_clever_username@reddit
FWIW before fobs, non-existent keys, and push-button start took over, but after the round key went away, there was a time when the square key was both the doors and ignition.
Maybe you’re a little off with when this inner monologue was taking place. Maybe it was during this transition period and your little saying was to remind you not to look for a round key and/or not panic that the round key is missing once it wasn’t a thing anymore.
realoctopod@reddit
Fords had the square one for ignition and doors, and round one only did the trunk.
Drew_of_all_trades@reddit
That is backwards from every car we had like that. Round for door, square for ignition. Those little wings on the sides formed a square slot.
TransportationOk657@reddit
Yeah, this teased out a memory that I had forgotten even existed! My "two key" car was an '88 Chevy Celebrity that I drove until I died. My next vehicle was a brand new 2002 F-250 that had one key to rule them all... I mean one key for the door and ignition.
worksnake@reddit
I'm sorry for your loss...of, um, you.
TransportationOk657@reddit
Lol, damn typos!!
spaceporter@reddit
Our '87 Astro Van had this pair.
KruzerVanDuzer@reddit
1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
Those were my keys. Still have the keys, but the car is long gone. Traded it in during Cash for Clunkers.
Jameson-Mc@reddit
I remember my buddy didn’t lock the doors and had a screwdriver for the ignition - he had a club for security as well
FixNo6646@reddit
I still have mine from my first vehicle 1989 suburban.
e37d93eeb23335dc@reddit
What about the valet key that wouldn’t unlock the glove box?
Prometheus_303@reddit
Oddly, this randomly popped into my head earlier today as I was getting into my car after grabbing food...
Out of curiosity....
Anyone know why we transitioned from 2 separate keys to a single universal one?
I assume it didn't take awhile for them to figure out how to get the door to unlock with the engine key (or the door key to start the engine)...
Was it just a cost cutting measure, producing half as many keys?
hereforthefeast@reddit
Not exactly the same but my old car had a "valet" key which would work for the ignition but couldn't unlock the glove compartment.
ShibbolethSibboleth@reddit
Yep for a big giant station wagon with reverse rear seat in back
LawrenceSB91@reddit
Still do this..
ube1kenobi@reddit
I had one with my car, and we made copies of it. Love it

My first car was a 95 Lumina as well. Nice!
acrowsmurder@reddit
LUMINAS FOR THE WIN
stale_burrito@reddit
I miss the bench seat in my Lumina
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
I bought it used in the summer of 2000. Early the next spring, it had massive issues with the AC compressor, which apparently didn't just run the AC but was a key part of the engine. I had to borrow a ton of money from my parents to get it fixed, and it still never worked properly the last few years I had it. I eventually limped to the dealership enough for me to trade it in in 2004, lol. Man did I hate that car by the end!
BlackHeartedXenial@reddit
Team Lumina! 1995 light blue, then a 1998 dark green.

Great68@reddit
Oh is that why the first generation Mustang outsold the Camaro 2 to 1 ?
;)
S_A_R_K@reddit
Well the 1st gen mustangs were made for 9 years to the Camaro's 3 years. So double doesn't sound that great. Plus, why would Ford put the distributor in the front of the engine? How am I supposed to wreck my back adjusting the timing if I don't have to crawl half way into the engine compartment?
Great68@reddit
OK, OK 1.5 to 1 then in the Camaro's first three years:
1967: 472k mustangs, 220k camaros 1968: 317k mustangs, 235k camaros 1969: 300k mustangs, 243k camaros

nitrot150@reddit
Only when I got an American manufacturer, my Japanese cars only had 1
meggsovereasy@reddit
1991 Oldsmobile that stalled out and smelled like water damage. My dad bought it for $500, my siblings and I had to drive it for at least a year before we got upgraded. It was a true learning lesson.
butt_honcho@reddit
My '83 Ranger used symmetrical keys, so you could get one side ground with the ignition pattern and the other with the door pattern. An oldtimer at the hardware store taught me that one.
LastCallKillIt@reddit
Sure as fuck. I owned 3 4th gen F-bodies, a z26 Beretta, a mid 90's W body and a 91 Grand Ma.

My first 2 cars, both Gm, both 80s (84 and 88) had separate keys like this.

No-Memory-152@reddit
I have an ‘89 suburban with 2 keys!
PlatypusImpersonator@reddit
This was my S10. Man I miss that truck.
OrangeCatBuddyPart2@reddit
Why would a S10 have two different keys? The door and ignition used the same key. There is no trunk, so no secondary key would be needed.
mikefrombarto@reddit
Miss mine too. Black 94 single cab with the 6 foot bed.
Biggest vehicle-related mistake was not hanging onto that truck.
Annhl8rX@reddit
I’m right there with you. My first truck was a 1991 GMC Sonoma. It was a red regular cab, short bed with the 2.8 V6 and a 5 speed. The previous owner had put chrome wheels, big chrome exhaust tips, and glass packs on it. It looked and sounded fast, despite cranking out a whopping 130 horsepower.
I only kept it about a year because I thought I was too tall for it. I probably was, but I’ve been itching to buy and build another for quite a while.
PlatypusImpersonator@reddit
I had a white 94, extended cab with the six foot bed. Three friends in the front with two squeezed into the jump seats and too many people in the bed (back when you could do that without getting harassed).
Lost mine to someone running a red light and almost tearing the bed off.
the_well_read_neck_@reddit
Same! I had a slammed 91. I ended up getting tboned in it. I miss that little truck so much.

Many cars just have a valet setting these days instead since that is the only practical reason to have two separate keys for ignition and cargo
elegantlywasted1983@reddit
I mean I had a Chevy Beretta with these exact keys so yes.
It was my nonna’s old Beretta and she was so tiny she had to have the seat permanently lifted so my head barely grazed the ceiling when I sat in it and I’m 5’4”. It had manual rolling windows and a tape deck.
What a glorious time in my life those years were.
TiEmEnTi@reddit
Only once, but yes. Always found it ironic that the cheapest car I ever owned had a "valet key"
SilverAsparagus2985@reddit
My first car was an 85 Chrysler Lebaron (not the convertible lol) and yep. I got into a minor fender bender throwing my smoke out the window because the window wouldn't go down. Luckily the lady gave me grace because at 16, I froze.

CaliforniaNavyDude@reddit
You say this like it's not a thing some of us still have. 🤣
0fficerRando@reddit
Yep. Drove an 83 suburban with the circle and square keys... Kinda silly, but even though it has MORE keys, you actually need less.. because if you didn't turn the ignition ALL the way back to turn off the engine... The engine would turn off... And you could remove the ignition key, but since you didn't rotate the ignition ALL the way back past the "click", then you didn't need the key to start the engine.. just rotate the ignition forward (with no key inserted) and the engine would start and you're on your way!

😓
enderforlife@reddit
I’ve had the round one on my keychain since I was 16, from the GMC Caballero my grandpa gave me. I’m 43.
Immediate-Bug-7737@reddit
I still have 2 keys for my car . 😭
OBotB@reddit
Modern Hyundai cars still do too, the valet key is in the fob, released by a button. You have lots of company, even if you have an older car.
bingbingdingdingding@reddit
My parent’s Buick Skylark.
pretenders2b@reddit
Shiiiiiiiiiii……still do.
SilverIsFreedom@reddit
Yep. 1984 GMC Suburban. It got 10-12 mpg, but you could fold down the middle seats and completely remove the third row of seats… there was enough room to… lay… a full sheet of plywood down.
SemicolonGuitars@reddit
Believe it or not, I had a car with 3. It was a 65, it was one for the door, one for the ignition, and one for the trunk.
nekkid_farts@reddit
86 Camaro was the last one I had i remember like that
FirehawkLS1@reddit
I still do for my 98 Pontiac.
itsjakerobb@reddit
I still have two vehicles with those keys. 😅🤣
mrjackspade@reddit
I have three. Locks, ignition, and rear hatch.
CheekyHand@reddit
Some of us still do.
Dude_with_the_skis@reddit
I still do
cmb15300@reddit
Oh yes, the paper-thin door key that snapped off in the lock on a cold morning
weedtrek@reddit
Still have the two from my old LTD on my key ring.
nochickflickmoments@reddit
Sometimes 3, ignition, trunk and glove compartment.
xargos32@reddit
Yup. And I have a 1984 Ford Tempo for a summer car, so I'm still used to it.
inafowlmood@reddit
I commute 94 miles round trip daily in a 30 year old Caddy with two keys. I'll drive it till it dies.
Honest_City_3512@reddit
1983 Z28! Square for ignition round for doors.
Freightshaker000@reddit
'70 Chevelle: square for door and ignition, round for trunk.
Doom_Saloon_406@reddit
Still do!
Zolty@reddit
My current car just uses my phone, I never want to go back.
DingBat_77@reddit
I remember locking my keys in my mom's 92 Oldsmobile and having everyone I knew that had a GM try their key to unlock the door. I don't really remember but I think one did work
badsexbird@reddit
Still do. 1994 Chevy truck.
A_Nonny_Muse@reddit
And a spare on a magnet hidden somewhere under the car.
brad613@reddit
I shaved the end of the rectangular ignition key and wrapped it in electrical tape and left it in the ignition so all I had to carry around was the oval door key. When I would turn the truck off, I would pull the key out just enough not to set off the dinging sound when the door was open. Fun times.
S_A_R_K@reddit
And another for the gas cap
coyote_of_the_month@reddit
I just sold a truck that had 2 keys back in 2022.
FrankReynolds@reddit
I had three for my '93 Lumina. One for the doors, one for the ignition, one for the glove box/trunk.
Groovydaze@reddit
92’ Chevy G20 checking in
dirtman81@reddit
I've had a couple of older cars where the second key was trunk and possibly even glove box only. Good for keeping the valets out of your stuff.
jtmann05@reddit
I worked at a hardware store as my first job and duplicated so many keys. One for the trunk/doors and other for the ignition. We also could duplicate those GM keys with the little chip on it and had a device that would tell us what blank to use for that particular chip. So wild compared to all of the keyless and laser cut keys they have now
TheCowhawk@reddit
Still do 👌🏻
pm_me_your_lub@reddit
I daily drive a truck with those keys.
jesusmansuperpowers@reddit
Ya. I like the only for dead battery better
InsertUsernameInArse@reddit
2 keys and a club lock
TwiggyDoom@reddit
Remember‽ My daily driver is a '92 Ranger, I still have two keys.
InformalStrain8692@reddit
Still have it for my 91 Caprice. 9C1 police models came with a separate key for the gas cap, but door and ignition was the same key.
lucasssquatch@reddit
"the square key makes the round wheels go"

the_kid1234@reddit
My first three vehicles were GMs. Mid 80s coupe and late 90s f-body both had two keys. Mid 90s truck only had one! After that they were all single key cars.
TheGreatNico@reddit
My truck's got a bunch of keys:
1. Door
2. Ignition
3. Gas cap
4. Glove box
5. Tool box
6. Trailer hitch pin
ApatheistHeretic@reddit
Yep. My first the cars had this.
Brandoid43@reddit
None of the cars I've ever had used two keys but my parents, grandparents and other family had vehicles that used two.
yowza_wowza@reddit
Yes. And a 3rd for the trunk sometimes.
ZippyTheRoach@reddit
My '84 had a third key too: the valet key. It opened the doors, but not the glove box. Only the owners key opened the glove box
Vash_85@reddit
Yup 76 gmc pickup. Miss that truck more and more
MalWinchester@reddit
Not only two keys, but those exact two keys. 1994 Buick Century bought in 2002 during my junior year in college. I lived that car until it was brutally murdered by a jackets who rear ended me.
CorgiCommercial8962@reddit
Still do.
keetojm@reddit
1985 Chevy cavalier, yup

One was called the “ valet key “ I used to duplicate them working at a hardware store in the 90s
Wonderful_Tip_5577@reddit

‘88 Oldsmobile Cutlas Ciera! Keys looked identical to the OP’s pic.

You're 100% right. I even associate seeing that round key with that sound of the trunk popping open.

spderweb@reddit
Toyota vehicles still come with two keys.
Celtic_Legend@reddit
Yeah my 2021 toyota corolla comes up 2 keys. 1 it attached to the fob, is bulky, and opens everything though, and the other one just opens the door and is smaller. Well I think that's what its used for, never tried to use it lol
JonnyQuest1981@reddit
I had those exact looking keys for my 1972 Caprice Classic.
tyen0@reddit
That was a popular police car in my area and my parents got a used one at auction which still had the spotlight lamp on the dash. So even though they painted it grey, cars would often slow down around us on the highway which I found quite amusing as a kid.
Nonsenseinabag@reddit
Same for my '72 Nova. I loved that car.
realoctopod@reddit
I do but mostly had Fords so the square key did thr ignition and the doors and the round one did the trunk only. As opposed to ignition only and door and trunk together in a chev.
C10Cruiser@reddit
We had an early 70s Volvo that had 5: Ignition, doors, trunk, locking glove box, locking storage under front armrest + gas cap, so 6, really.

My grandma's 92 Cutlass was essentially mine for a few years before it kicked the bucket. Loved that car. Definitely had two keys.
CrayonData@reddit
I just came across a couple of these earlier this week.
My dad passed away last month, and I have been sorting out the garage... the guy kept keys, there is a small bin of all sorts of keys, and I found a couple similar to these posted
BenCelotil@reddit
I'm not sure but I think my parent's 1985 Ford XF had 3 keys - ignition, doors, boot.
The boot also had an electronic switch next to the bonnet switch, and inside the boot the wiring to the latch was exposed, so in an emergency you could crawl through the seat door into the boot and pop the boot open from inside.
Joeva8me@reddit
Nicer cars still have this today, a valet key. One key will operate everything and one key can only open the door and turn the car on while the trunk, glove box, and console can’t be opened. A lot of times it will pop out of the key fob (ford does this). I’m usually buying the highest trim of car.
BulimicMosquitos@reddit
First car was an ‘87 Buick Skyhawk with these exact keys.
seanie_rocks@reddit
Same for my 87 Towncar and 94 Century.
ShawnaLAT@reddit
And my 86 Grand Prix.
EffectiveCycle@reddit
Those look like the exact keys to my 94 Grand Am
Hello_Hangnail@reddit
My 2021 nissan had two keys because I had to get the ignition changed out and the shop tried to tell me I needed to change all the locks in the doors (despite it not having automatic locks) to bump the price up. This sort of thing happens constantly when I try to get car servicing in my area without my brother taking the car in!
texan01@reddit
Still do! My 77 Chevelle parked in my driveway right now has them.
Marklar916@reddit
My first car was a 92 Chevy Cavalier that had these exact same keys.
maggie320@reddit
All too familiar with these since my dad sold GM cars for many years. Round doors and trunk, square ignition. I remember turning the ignition a certain way on my mom’s Buick Century and you could shut listen to the radio while the engine was off. Cool at the time, but I learned that killed the battery.
mayor_of_robots@reddit
I think I just missed this. My first car (a late-80s Ford -- I don't remember the exact model year) only had one key, but I think it was among the first.
lifeat24fps@reddit
My 2006 has one key that doesn't open the door but works in the ignition. And one key that both opens the door and works the ignition. I don't know why.
dmsacred101@reddit
Three keys for me. 1965 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight LS. One for the ignition, one for the doors, and the third was for the trunk.
der_innkeeper@reddit
Still Do.
1993 Chevy G20 conversion van.
It needs more Conan on the outside, though.
cosp85classic@reddit
I still own two pickups that use these style of two keys. But I'm weird and stick with affordable and paid for. Plus, no manufacturer makes exactly what I want and I'm not willing to pay today's prices for a vehicle. Like I said, I'm weird.
michaelincognito@reddit
Core memory unlocked.
With the round key.
thewayshesaidLA@reddit
Yes. My Bonneville ignition key had a chip so it couldn’t be used in the door.
AlienDelarge@reddit
I still do on my truck. Then the gas caps and glove box are other keys for it.
PaliDudeBro@reddit
Still do. I drive a 72 ford bronco. One key for the doors; a different key for the ignition, a different key for the rear window lift gate, a different key for the gas cap.
taylorwmj@reddit
Ah yes -- results of the incredibly siloed GM under the (incorrect) guise of "security"

zerokijz@reddit
Still do. But I still have a 95 Ford.
Quick_Hide@reddit
My 1988 Chevy Silverado had two keys. Eventually the ignition did not need a key to start—I would just grab the two small metal paddles (where the key should insert) and turn it, and the truck would start.
rawonionbreath@reddit
I remember the plastic lined car keys. I always associated it with my grandparents cars because my folks never owned GM’s.
cr1ter@reddit
Was this like a thing in the US? The only reason here, why you would have different keys back in the day is somebody broke into your car to steal your radio.
Evee862@reddit
How about hexagon for doors and ignition and round for trunk and glove box?
steelemcneil51@reddit

My first car, an 81 Cutlass, had them. I currently have a 94 Corvette that we’re restoring, and it still has the two keys.
bcentsale@reddit
I only remember this on American-branded ones. I want to say at least one of my dad's 2 Toyotas, and my uncle's BMWs, all had a single key, as did my various uncles' and aunts' Fiats and VWs and whatnots in Italy.
ShillinTheVillain@reddit
Hey, those are the keys to my first car; a 1992 Chevy Corsica
Iknowthings19@reddit
It varied by manufacturer. GM like what are shown, starting in the mid 70s the square was ignition only, and the round was trunk, door, glove box. GM keys were inserted teeth down.
Chrysler used star key for ignition and doors, and round key for trunk and glove box. Keys were inserted teeth up.
Ford used square for ignition, round for door and trunk. Orientation didn't matter because they were double sided.
FlatRooster4561@reddit

I still have the set from my 84 Monte Carlo SS that I drove in high school. I keep them around to remind myself that I'm working to some day have a cool car again. Damn, I miss that car.
poit57@reddit
My mom has 2 early 80s model Monte Carlos during my childhood that had these keys. I think my dad has the same for his pickup trucks, but I never had access to the keys for his vehicles.
When we got a 90 Honda Accord for the family car, we just needed one key.
Super_Direction498@reddit
They had this as late as '89, maybe later. My '89 rally wagon van had different keys for locks and ignition
kheinrychk@reddit
Still do

Trunk/door

Back when there were two keys and I was under 21, I remember having something like this, so I didn’t have to keep shutting the car off to get into the trunk for….reasons.
Seriously though, I’m glad drunk driving being seen as mostly harmless largely died with our generation.
I’m so thankful I didn’t hurt someone back when I was making my poor decisions.
LastSamurai714@reddit
I have a 1995 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham that has these keys too. I let my 19 year old son drive it one day and he just looked over at me and said “I get it” with a big smile.

My 86 Cherokee still had those very keys exactly. Meanwhile my Nissan of the same vintage had a solo key already. My fobless low spec Element had it.. but by accident. The passenger side door lock cylinder got trashed and it alone was replaced and had its own key. I guess I could also count the valet key that came with the truck, which I forgot to give when I sold the Honda.

Remembering my parents' cars from the early 90s:
mom's GM minivan had square key for engine, round key for doors
dad's Ford explorer had one key for the engine and doors and another key for the glove box. There was also the alarm clicker.
HangryHangryHedgie@reddit
Yup. Doors and Engine. Both usually eventually snapped, you had to find fhe one place that had the blanks and swear as you fished for the spare you knew you had made last time.
Also those awful push button headlights I almost always left on.
