Kid called it 'Blooming Weiners'
Posted by cocopopsicle2k@reddit | shittyfoodporn | View on Reddit | 150 comments
Child was craving chilli dogs. I'd seen someone criss-cross-cut big hot dogs in some video i passed and thought it looked like a great way to keep the chilli on the dogs so i tried it. Did not expect them to turn into centipedes but found some dinner rolls to put them on, added a can of chilli, they weren't bad.
earfeater13@reddit
Welp, thats settled then. These are now officially called bloomin weiners.
SeniorWalrus@reddit
Sounds like an STD
ChankiriTreeDaycare@reddit
Distinct from cauliflower cock
aron2295@reddit
I don’t know if that is slang for a real STD or not, and at this point, I am too afraid to Google it.
solidad@reddit
Better than avocado taint.
thaddmitchell@reddit
So does "Puffy Taco" and "Spotted Dick".
They are real. You can safely look them up.
ClearMacaron9234@reddit

Thank you jd vance
ClearMacaron9234@reddit
that's mr. couchfucker to you
Iwannapeeonyou@reddit
This is officially my supper tomorrow night!
EmersonLucero@reddit
When you do that, add some beef bouillon to the water. It prevents leaching of flavor and salt from the hot dogs and into the water.
slump_lord@reddit
Nah you just pour a nice pint of the hot dog water to pair. That's the best part
smonkweedwenurscared@reddit
You know, pic 1 and 2 I was a little skeptical, but I see the appeal now
Thwomp69@reddit
Get that boy a slotdog and change his life
Griffithead@reddit
Boiling hot dogs is insane.
It takes longer and tastes infinitely worse.
SirTiffAlot@reddit
Everyone in here would smash, it just looks shitty. Well done OP
moonmonologue@reddit
I’d smash for sure this is not shitty AT ALL hahaha
Griffithead@reddit
It is though. It would be infinitely better if the dog was fried instead of boiled.
Toros_Mueren_Por_Mi@reddit
Nah this is shitty for sure. Doesn't mean it's not good
SirTiffAlot@reddit
It's shitty food porn. Emphasis on the shitty not food porn
Logie-Bearr@reddit
i dunno, i like it
ColdOn3Cob@reddit
went from completely disgusted to completely on board between pictures 2 and 3
EStewart57@reddit
The tater tots saved the day.
Mooshroomey@reddit
I think I could get behind it if they were grilled or at least cooked in a pan. Boiled is just a little too sad
OneSensiblePerson@reddit
Same. First they were boiled giant caterpillars, then they went to fast-cooking hot dogs, and then to genius way of keeping toppings on the dog.
ElegantCoach4066@reddit
Same
DeityOfYourChoice@reddit
No, no, yes, hell yes.
cocopopsicle2k@reddit (OP)
Must admit I felt the same way. Went from "the fuck have I done?" to "ok actually that looks pretty good" in the span of cheese sprinkling.
agoia@reddit
The Lucille Ball shrug and "eh, close enough" came to mind when I saw the final product. My favorite kind of stuff to see here.
Iongdog@reddit
Just wish it was a more appropriate chili. Bean chili on dogs is not my favorite
cocopopsicle2k@reddit (OP)
Agreed. Bean-in chilli was the fault of not including photos in the shopping list.
LtAldoDurden@reddit
I’ve been cutting a corkscrew pattern and air frying my dogs lately. Gives you crispy bits throughout. Levels it up a bit imo.

pangu17@reddit
Wait, aren’t hotdogs fully cooked? Why do we boil them
Llama-Bear@reddit
To Brits of a certain age, this is a Wimpy Bender, missing buns though
FormingTheVoid@reddit
That hotdog water is SOUP
Rofellos1984@reddit
Useless_Fox@reddit
Definitely on to something, it increases the surface area which would have been nice if they were grilled or fried.
Nf1nk@reddit
There's a trick about doing the cuts lengthwise instead of cross wise and if you do it right, the hot dog ends up looking a bit like an octopus.
PM_ME_UR_CC_NUMBER@reddit
Or smoked
byneothername@reddit
I do this but I air fry them. They turn out nice.
marcusw882000@reddit
Instead the were boiled 🤮
Aware-Yesterday4926@reddit
Yeah, heated in water was how hot dogs were prepared when I was a kid, then we got an easy-to-use grill.
hj17@reddit
Meat pinecone
Repulsive-Durian4800@reddit
The pattern of cuts increases the surface area for toppings to cling to. This is Good.
louiloui152@reddit
Would prefer them grilled but other than that looks ugly and tasty
OJSimpsons@reddit
Id eat that.
zombie_on_the_lawn@reddit
Final product looks good actually. I'd just finish them off in a frying one to get some nice golden colour and better flavour.
EcuadorianPerson@reddit
that's a good strategy because the holes in the wiener support the chilli and the cheese, 10/10
Life-Landscape5689@reddit
I'm curious why you went through all this effort to prepare this meal, including scoring the dogs for increased crispiness, and then just boiled them? Boiling hotdogs has got to be the worst way to prepare them. I would prefer microwaved because at least then its really fast
drcrunknasty@reddit
Oh neat. I’m going to try these out today.
teeeeeeb@reddit
Who up blooming they weiner
SirStocksAlott@reddit
This just makes me feel very uncomfortable.
Desperate_pleasure@reddit
Air fry these when cut like that! It’s my go to method
ThyShittySwede@reddit
The aussies have invented something
MantraMuse@reddit
looks like it would be amazing in air fryer; I will try it the next few days
ChunkyChap25@reddit
At least put them in the oven to get them some color...

Sinistasia@reddit
Honestly I have been cooking my entire life and this looks divine. Maybe toast the buns. Presentation is overrated
Sclube@reddit
This is what this subreddit is all about
SynisterSilence@reddit
I so thought by the name they were going to be battered and deep fried bloomin onion style
xzanfr@reddit
These used to be called 'benders' in the 70's and 80's. The UK restaurant called Wimpy sold them.
HorrFrek@reddit
This is not shitty. Post this on r/hotdog and I’m sure it’ll get love.
redditsuckspokey1@reddit
Gordon Ramsay would be delighted.
TheMoonsMadeofCheese@reddit
Let him cook
merelymisguided@reddit
This would go gangbusters on r/hotdogs
Significant-Mud2572@reddit
Honestly looks great. It also looks potentially less messy because the chili has a place to settle inside the jigsaw dog.
taotdev@reddit
I'm not even high rn or anything but man I could totally fuck those up
Belladonna0_0@reddit
Looks like a pine cone… anyone else??
The_Marlon_Rando@reddit
I would def eat 3 of those.
DataOver544@reddit
Looks fucking awesome. But then I just ate some Fritos with ice cold nacho cheese sauce in a can.
12PoundCankles@reddit
Why do people insist on boiling hot dogs? Throw that shit in the microwave, on the grill, in the oven, frying pan, whatever... But ffs don't boil that shit. That's gross as hell.
sean_incali@reddit
huuullllkkkkk
ufokid@reddit
As a non north American, what are the toppings?
cocopopsicle2k@reddit (OP)
Chilli with unfortunate beans (chilli on hot dogs should be a meat sauce), shredded American cheese, i think this one has mustard and pickle relish in the last photo
ufokid@reddit
Seems the topping is a lot more important than the sausage
cocopopsicle2k@reddit (OP)
It is. The important bit is the combination, and it usually tastes better with cheaper sausages than I normally buy. I actually hate hot dogs normally with the exception of coarse ground all beef ones i use for Chicago style. I think maybe it's just that the chilli-cheese combination drowns out the taste of sadness and pork intestine 🤔

This should be an r/characterarcs post with progression like that.
Hecc_Maniacc@reddit
replace the b*ans with a meat chili and we're going places.
Ill-Wear-8662@reddit
Censoring beans?
Hecc_Maniacc@reddit
ugh, how vulgar. putrid even.
Ill-Wear-8662@reddit
Sounds like my mother's opinion
NeverBeNormalnbn@reddit
Hey Napoleon give me some of your tots.
BrewBroz@reddit
Why the hell does everyone boil their hot dogs on this sub
cocopopsicle2k@reddit (OP)
In this case it was because i was afraid they'd get bits pulled off positioning them in the steamer basket, but the burner was hot and adding more water was easier than figuring out something else so i just said fuck it.
dreampuff@reddit
I’d like to boil them to kill the bacteria then air fry to a black crisp
DrDooDooBrown@reddit
Looks legit.
MysticCharms32@reddit
It is very interesting 🤔 I just know this tasted amazing!
CosmicallyF-d@reddit
Actually slicing and air frying them this way will give much more surface area that becomes crunchy. It's really delicious.
cocopopsicle2k@reddit (OP)
Ooh. I'll have to try that
EllaMcWho@reddit
I really want to … since the turkey fryer is going to be set up, all out, filled and prepped this week … make corn dogs like this because it’ll be fascinating experiment and good appetizer. Off to double check with hostess to see
dreampuff@reddit
porcucorndogs

hakklihajawhatever@reddit

You know what though? It kinda works. Holds all your toppings in the creases like a ham.
TheSwearJarIsMy401k@reddit
Now grill them or pan fry them next time and that’s top tier American ingenuity
HarlesD@reddit
we didn't have a lot of money growing up so canned Chilli on hot dogs were a style growing up. I still get the craving for them every few months so I keep a can of wolf's brand on hand just in case. if you got it some sour cream goes a long way
HBKnight@reddit
Making my next Skyline coneys this way.
CasualRampagingBear@reddit
I asked my teenager if he wanted a ‘blooming weiner’ and he replied “I am done talking to you today” I didn’t even get to show him how awesome they look! 😂
blood_bones_hearts@reddit
Okay the boiling part is and always will be disgusting but the rest is gd genius.
cocopopsicle2k@reddit (OP)
Yeah, was going to steam them but with all the little dangle bits boiling seemed less dangerous. Did not want to do twice, lol
ChaoticxSerenity@reddit
I think your kid needs to open up a food truck, they're onto something!
dracarys289@reddit
For once let him cook. This would go hard with some cheese dip.

this is something you serve your boyfriend or husband when he is on thin ice.

Calgirlleeny2@reddit
Popular "Texas Weiner" place in New Jersey fries their hot dogs and they are great. Johnny and Hanges used to be the place to go, but although it's not there there are many others. Chili dogs are great, I get them in California at A&W.
Ruby_Soho-@reddit

Now if you put that into a skillet with some oil and onions it would be delicious, scoring is a great way to change it up. Boiling not so much
