Question about the 2 Hour Day/Night XCs Commercial Requirements

In 61.129(a)(3)(iii) it requires "One 2-hour cross country flight in a single engine airplane in daytime conditions that consists of a total straight-line distance of more than 100 nautical miles from the original point of departure" (and the same for night). Does the first leg alone need to be 2+ hours, or can the cumulative "there and back" flight satisfy the 2 hours? And if the single leg alone needs to be 2 hours, can you work on other things and then land in order to remain in the air for the required 2 hours, as long as you meet the 100 NM mile requirement? I would be working on commercial maneuvers, not just screwing around! Thanks for any clarification
