My First Design, My First Gun

I decided to design a Derringer but with the aesthetic of those from the "Wild West". Ammunition up to .32 caliber or any other below that as long as it is centerfire. Handguards made of wood, metal, or plastic. What do you think? π

That's a good start!
However, look into two-piece triggers. Current design is extremely dangerous.

Ok, thanks! π«‘π

PLA plus will do fine. Only PETG is brittle

Unless this is just a fitment test, you absolutely should not be printing anything less than solid for a diy gun

Don't worry! It's just a test model. I'm thinking of using Flex filament, which is almost as flexible as rubber.

Why flexible?

For safety. The guns shake violently when fired, and I don't want a bunch of plastic embedded in my face...

If you use a super flexible filament you likely wonβt contain the pressure of the cartridge and it could frag on you. Pla plus would be a better material, given it fails in a ductile manner, but still has good strength.

The barrel is a rectangular piece of steel that is bolted to the Derringer (not a tube like in most weapons of this type). There's no need to worry about pressure.

Your breech face Iβm assuming located in the rectangular cutout in the frame? If you use a flexible material you likely wonβt have the required rigidity to ensure the breech block/bolt will effectively seal against the rear of the cartridge. If that is not supported it will move out of the chamber before the chamber pressure has equalized with surrounding or at least reduced to a safe level, and the case will frag. Itβs why you have case ruptures in guns with really really light bolts.

Thanks for the information. I'll keep that in mind.

You should use this as sand casting dies.

It's not a bad idea.
