If you watched The Real World: SF, what was your true opinion of Puck at the time?

Hard to argue this guy is the prototype for what would be known as the "reality TV villain", but I remember watching this season when it debuted and thinking how interesting this dude was. I was about 13 years old, so obviously, my perspective wasn't fully formed, but I do remember looking forward to tuning in every week to see what he would say or do. And then when he was kicked out of the house, MTV still kept cameras on him for a while.
unicorn-beard@reddit
Couldn't help but google him - apparently he's had some domestic violence charges, got in a bad card accident driving drunk with his 8 year old kid, stalking charges, etc... YIKES.
Embarrassed-Ad-6739@reddit
He was a total shithead.
garden__gate@reddit
I was 16 and haaaated him. He reminded me of every douchebag guy in a band I knew. Never mind the fact that he was in his mid-twenties and definitely should have outgrown that BS by that time.
garden__gate@reddit
The fact that Pedro went on the show to educate people and then had to deal with this small little bully in his final days still makes me mad.
HerRoyalRedness@reddit
I will never forgive Puck for how he treated Pedro.
upstatestruggler@reddit
the complete lack of hygiene, picking nose and scabs and sticking those fingers in community food when you’re living with someone with IMMUNE DEFICIENCY is diabolical. Puck was from the Bay Area, he knew what HIV/AIDS meant.
ButterscotchAware402@reddit
Yesterday my husband had the peanut butter out and I almost stuck my finger in it for a scoop but I told myself not to pull a Puck and grabbed a spoon.
GrizzlyAdam12@reddit
He dipped his unwashed fingers in Pedro's peanut butter. Pedro had full blown AIDS and a T cell count of like 18.
Pedro couldn't afford to get sic, but Puck didn't give any fucks about anyone but himself.
BoboTurkey@reddit
Remind me, didn't Rachel want him so bad? (I was like 12 and I seem to remember church girl wanting the bad boy.)
BoboTurkey@reddit
If true, her stereotype still stands. 🤮
Biddy_Impeccadillo@reddit
Repulsive creep at the time. I felt a little empathy during the storyline where he found a lost dog and had to give it back to the real owners, but that was it. I could not understand in the least why Rachel was torn during the discussion about whether he or Pedro should move out.
justsomeyeti@reddit
Fuck everyone that had anything to do with these shows.

More of a Road Rules guy, eh?

VectorJones@reddit
It was obvious from the beginning that Puck was the odd man out in the house. The rest of the housemates got along pretty well, until Puck showed up. That's when the tension started to rise and everyone started to get on edge. I was glad when they got rid of him.
username11585@reddit
I wondered what has happened in his life since then, so I just read his wiki and wow he’s an even bigger asshole than he was on the show. Dude did not mature whatsoever. Multiple convictions for domestic battery on his wife over the years including a felony, drunk driving with no license and gets in an accident where he injures his 8 year old son, and a few years later arrested for felony stalking and he’s on probation and not allowed to leave LA county now. What an absolute asshole. Poor kids.

I’m shocked he’s even still alive.

He was my favorite character. I didn’t get the hate. He was the only one of them being “real”. I think Julie liked him right?
Ok-Street7504@reddit
I went to grammar school with him, fourth grade. He wasn't the obnoxious person he grew into.
thepuncroc@reddit
Do you have any strange tales of ProtoPuck?
juju0010@reddit
I liked him but I was only 10 so I didn’t understand many of the social interactions. I just thought he was cool because he was counterculture and a wildcard.
Purring4Krodos@reddit
Puck was such a try-hard, edge lord. Totally obnoxious and very inconsiderate.
Hilarious to me that the current transportation secretary and Rachel are married when she used to flirt with Puck. At least she maintains her type.
MadameLeota604@reddit
Wut… sorry I live in Canada and do not pay attention to the US anymore. This sounds like a Simpsons episode or something.

The Simpsons is zany. We're in an unending season of The Apprentice

Yeah, I don't know how anyone doesn't end up with "This guy seems like a real asshole" after watching him.
HAL_9OOO_@reddit
That's mostly true, but he was also the reason that people watched the show. The Real World changed television and Puck had a hand in that.
strange_stars@reddit
Well yeah but that’s just all the more reason to hate him lol
JonnyQuest1981@reddit
💯 Puck is the OG reality TV agitator/villain. He walked so Tiffany “New York” Pollard could run.

I remember thinking he had kind of a cool punk vibe.
Then I grew up a little and realized he was just an attention seeking ass.
It's almost shocking that he isn't relevant at this crazy time of whoever can be the biggest asshole wins.
RogerClyneIsAGod2@reddit
This show is the reason I can't take Sean Duffy seriously. I've seen that dude drunk on The Real World.
Now, he may be a genius (though I seriously doubt it since he's working for this current administration), all of those former actors/musicians/entertainers who get into big politics may have degrees upon degrees, but I just can't with Duffy.
cidvard@reddit
I was a Real World fan but came to it a little too late for the legend that is RL: San Francisco. That season in general is legendary and from watching it in syndication actually lived up to the 'put a bunch of really different people in a house and see them get REAL.'
Also, Puck was a trash human.
a-ha_partridge@reddit
He put his finger in Pedro’s peanut butter and I never forgave him.
FestiveArtCollective@reddit
The first episode, I remember thinking he was cool but that changed very quickly. He was disgusting and so disrepsectful. He would do things like eat from the communal peanut butter straight from the jar with his unwashed fingers. The way he treated Pedro and tried to isolate him from the rest of the roomates was evil. I remember he also shot snot rockets on the ground so often that they made a compilation. Just a vile person.

Around 1998 or so, some cast members from various seasons of the Real World came to my college for an event. Puck was in prison at the time, but Rachel was there. She gave out his mailing address, saying Puck would appreciate mail while in prison. I cringe looking back at this time…but I was pen pals with Puck for awhile. He would not answer any questions about why he was in prison. He requested postcards of girls in bikinis and often asked that I make my letters “smell nice.” Ew.

Having said that I would not want to hang out with him.
EmperorGrinnar@reddit
I'm too young to know anything other than one thing. The only thing I remember from that show: he would stick his fingers in the peanut butter and just lick them clean. Probably several times in one sitting. It made other people mad, and honestly pretty gross if it's communal food.
I wanna say I was like 7 or 8 when that was still on. I do still think of this tidbit every so often when I'm in the kitchen.

Salt-N-Vinegar-Lover@reddit
He was ahead of his time. To me this is when “reality tv” truly began. You see the influence of Puck reverberate with so many influencers, because his style of confrontation has been replicated and expanded on in countless shows and online since. Puck found the formula that got eyeballs, and the producers knew they stumbled on a type of person that could propel shows further and longer with an almost bad-faith antagonist. I hate him.
Delicious_Tea3999@reddit
He was the perfect example of that kind of crusty slacker everybody knew at the time. Overconfident, probably smarter than he seemed, funny a lot of the time, but also disgusting and rude the other times. Basically, the show’s version of Pauly Shore or the prototype for Jackass. It was brilliant casting, really, but I’ll always dislike him for how he treated Pedro
FungiStudent@reddit
You're way off base with the Pauly Shore comment.

This was before scripted reality was known to the general public. The producers needed a villain to make things more interesting to the viewers. Some things were done on his own and some forced by the show . Reality TV is the absolute worst . I did watch that season though .
sleepsymphonic@reddit
Puck was the candle that burned to brightly in terms of Real-World villain-y. Rachel Campos is the actual real-world long-term villain. Especially when she joined forces with Sean Duffy.

Pedro was a pretty influential person to me. He was the first gay guy I ever “met”. I was in my early teens, grew up Southern Baptist. He definitely blew apart stereotypes I held at the time. I don't remember liking any of them particularly much. But Puck, asshole that he was, did seem like the most "Real," person on The Real World.
This show kind of represents the beginning of the end for me. In the years following this I really came to hate reality TV. Like I thought it was just neither reality or entertainment even... It was just Bleh.
I always knew something bad would come of it but, I didn't realize the full implications. Here we are today with a bunch of kids who grew up on it, and with social media being an absolute fixture of their lives from day one. Insta, TikTok, Reddit, Facebook and whatever else is more real to them than actual reality and... Look where we're at... We even have a Reality Show President who's just fucking our country relentlessly, day after day and he just says Everything's going great! and enough people accept it, despite obvious evidence to the contrary because it's what they want to believe. We've entered the age of Hyper Reality where nothing is really real anymore. And it's scary and dystopian.
OK, rant over.

I worked in LA at a travel agency at the time after this came out. He was living in LA and had a manager we worked with so I got to know him a little bit from that. I would deliver him tickets to a place he was renting in Hollywood adjacent (not a great area) and it was like visiting a dealer. There was never a simple hand off. I would ring doorbell and hope no answer so could leave at the door but he was always there. He would invite me in and would have to discuss the tickets the trip smoke a joint and drink a bit before I could go. He often seemed like he was bogarting the “better” stash and doing himself as he always seemed twitchy and edgy. The place he lived in seemed like it never got cleaned and looked like a smoke house without graffiti. He was alone except one or two times and those people did not seem like real friends but party friends. Seeing your post made me remember how he was always being “puck” and it must have been exhausting looking back. But he wasn’t a good guy. I (a male) got the job if delivery ticket boy cause the 2 girls in the office did not want him in. He made passes at them both within short visits to the office. He made his bed and laid in it.
