Office Space

Who else saw Office Space in the theater? It's a cult classic, but barely anyone saw it in theaters. 19 year old me loved watching them destroy a printer to the Geto Boys on the big screen. The entire movie is perfection.

I worked and lived by most of the filming locations in Austin (not while they were making it, years after)
Even banked at Chotchki’s (they used a Chase branch for the exterior shots, prob wasn’t a Chase when they filmed there).
18randomcharacters@reddit
I’ve only been to Austin once for a wedding but now I wish I’d done an Offie Space tour while there
Alternative-Light514@reddit
It’s be pretty easy as the restaurant, the apartment complex and the road they sit in traffic on at the opening of the film are all really close. The office park where Initech was, is prob 25min from those.
GarminTamzarian@reddit
I believe the inside of the Old Alligator Grill was used for the interior shots of one of the restaurants where Jennifer Anniston's character worked.
I knew a guy that worked in the photo lab at the Walgreens on south Lamar at the time, and he remembered printing pictures of her in costume that one of the crew members had taken on the set.
hamburgler26@reddit
This is correct, I used to live not far and we'd go drink there after work all the time. RIP Alligator Grill, you were a legend. Trivia Night and way too many Hurricanes!
Alternative-Light514@reddit
I believe you’re right, but I never got a chance to see it before it closed unfortunately
GarminTamzarian@reddit
I ate there once many, many years ago, but I don't remember much about the inside, other than that it was quite dark (all the windows were covered, I believe).
The deep-fried alligator was pretty tasty, though.
crazycatlady331@reddit
Never saw it in a theater but the printer scene aged like a fine wine.
Printers suck.
JungleRose4@reddit
Work just hard enough not to get fired. I employ this mindset frequently.
PropertyTraining4790@reddit
I'm not full throatedly advocating for a sequel, but it feels like there's was an opportunity during covid to do Office Space 2: WFH.
b1rdwatch3r@reddit (OP)
Mike Judge has said getting this movie made as he wanted it done was such a pain in the ass that he wants nothing to do with a sequel. I'm glad he didn't let the executives get their hands into the process. This movie is perfect in every way.
OutcomeLegitimate618@reddit
I feel like there are many zoom jokes to be made. And I have never been on zoom, I've just heard stories.
tkecanuck341@reddit
When I first saw it, I was in high school and thought it was an over the top parody of an office. No workplaces could actually be like this, right? RIGHT?
As it turns out, pretty much every office I have ever worked in has been almost exactly like this.
Displaced_Melon1475@reddit
I never wanted to work in an office because of this movie
WhiskyStandard@reddit
I took one semester of undergrad business school classes. I was a little zoned out when the professor said “…transaction processing systems, or TPS…” and it jolted me awake.
I finally knew what a TPS report was! Then I looked around at the other students in the auditorium. No one else had that flash of recognition. Those humorless future middle managers were all just taking notes.
That’s when I decided business school wasn’t for me.
But also, pretty much no one under 30 gets that story in my experience.
DmtTraveler@reddit
Mike judge said it stands for Test Program Set

WhiskyStandard@reddit
Hmm. Well, I still stand behind my point that those people were joyless.
Appropriate-Neck-585@reddit
I found it on cable about 10 years after it came out, but have owned it on DVD and loved it ever since.
HeyCarpy@reddit
I loved this movie so much when it came out, despite never having worked in an office.
Now, after over 10 years in an office, it’s even funnier.
TransportationOk657@reddit
This movie made me never want to work in an office setting! 😆
This movie is great, though. As are a lot of things from Mike Judge.
bikemandan@reddit
Same. Im convinced this movie set me on my current path. I got an internship out of college at a telecommunications company. Was your typical cubicle hell with multi level managers. I knew there was no way I could continue. Became a bike mechanic and eventually a farmer
LilRedForeman@reddit
Fucken A man
RandomRageNet@reddit
Back then I thought a job like that would be hell. Now I'm like wow they had full size cubicles and not a fucking open floorplan.
Their dress code still sucks though.
Tony_Penny@reddit
Now you realize that you work with EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER in that movie. I did when I worked in an office for two years.
HeyCarpy@reddit
Oh god it’s true.
I have to say that I oddly YEARN for a full cubicle like the old ones in movies. They don’t exist anywhere in my building.
Diablojota@reddit
Open floor plan?
HeyCarpy@reddit
You know it. Like being in a sweat shop.
aero25@reddit
Open floor plan is the worst
Diablojota@reddit
Without a doubt.
xRVAx@reddit
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
Unusual-Minimum9306@reddit
It’s like how much better “This Is 40” hits now vs when it came out and I was around 30 with no kids.
OutcomeLegitimate618@reddit
Naw man, I do believe you'd get your ass kicked for sayin' somethin' like that. And now I too see the attraction of a manual labor job.

All sorts of random non descriptive error codes. Just yesterday I got a call from a coworker saying their computer was stuck on “initializing” and the mouse turned into a spinning wheel and it had been this way for 5 minutes.
I asked the last time they restarted their computer.
This morning they said.
I said do it again and call me back.
It was now working. Seriously, restart can fix so many random issues.

It means the paper cassette is out of letter sized paper.

Why does it say paper jam when there IS no paper jam?!

I don’t really like talking about my flair.

Love this scene
KASega@reddit
I saw a post recently about crowds in theatres that went apeshit crazy over scenes in a movie and although the opening night showing I went to didn’t have too many people but this scene made everyone laughing like crazy
Fussy_Part69@reddit
Back up in the ass with the resurrection.

Mike Judge is the modern day Steinbeck.
Over the course of 30 years, his unique ability to draw marrow from the bone of American society is unparalleled.

Okay but, that’s the last straw…

We have to keep these movie references going. Try to keep some of these classic comedies relevant. I still love this movie. Makes me miss the days before we got so enamored with social media.

One of the best character actors of all time. I love that you can tell it's him on the cover.

Everything I've ever seen Stephen Root in has been great. Of course he's fantastic, but he also knows how to choose fantastic projects.

My office used to have a company wide messaging system. There was a user marker could send a message to and it would break everyone’s screen in every office across the company. You could also have where replies were allowed.
It was Friday after and Someone was about to quit and sent a company wide message reminding people not to forget their cover sheet for TPS reports. What followed for the next hour was quote after quote from the movie coming in from people all across our company. Someone even quoted with “My O face.”
It got so bad the CEO chimed in and IT disabled messages. Every person who replied had to speak with HR to get their privileges back.
iRveritas@reddit
Milton actually wrote the script for this movie.
"I said NO salt on the margarita! There's huge chunks of salt! I see one right there."
BornTry5923@reddit
I thought Mike Judge wrote it
iRveritas@reddit
You are correct. I should have fact checked that friend of mine...
Twanlx2000@reddit
Why should I change? He's the one who sucks.

That'd be great...

My young adult kids love this movie. Apparently a lot of the humor resonates

I was thinking about that printer scene randomly the other day.
I wonder how long our the cultural memory will understand that as parody? Eventually folks will see all the anachronisms as chronistic.
OkPie8905@reddit
What is it that you do here?
Seven22am@reddit
"Peter! Turn on channel 9! It's the breast exams!"

No, I didn't see it in the theater, but love it.
