How can an almost 50 year old be a gamer?
Posted by BeaniePole1792@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 338 comments
That is what one of my coworkers said to me when I said my husband is a gamer. I game too but not like him. Having a kid made me lose my desire to sit and game. He’s mostly a pc gamer. He also does magic the gathering and dungeon and dragons which I had to explain both to her.
I am more into puzzles and like traveling and amusement parks. Arcades were my thing and there are retro ones around here.
Anyways, her question perplexed me. She’s in her 30’s, upper management and has 3 boys that are all into sports. They all go to a private Christian school and she’s very much into the Bible. To each their own.
I was like - uh - Nintendo? Atari?
Soon we will be 60, 70 even 80! And still game.

I’m one of these weird Xennials who never got into gaming and really don’t get it. But then again, I never got into fishing either. Go enjoy your games!

This is my wife. She never took to gaming but growing up it was my entire thing. Still is.
Our kids game a little bit, but not really. Minecraft and stuff like that. Mario family games, etc.
I'll have some version of a steam deck type thing until I die, probably.

My mom is in her 70s and plays games on her phone. She is absolutely a gamer. We played Atari together when I was a kid and she bought us our first Nintendo, and often played Dr. Mario. She'll always be a gamer. People like this who view gaming as a child's thing to put away when you "grow up" need to grow up.

When we got an Apple IIe clone in the early 90s my mom got OBSESSED with Prince of Persia. Then I recently found out she's been playing point-and-click adventure games!

Grind culture is so fucking boring...
DrButtgerms@reddit
It's not even grind culture. It's this dumb idea that gaming isn't an "adult" hobby. Everyone has hobbies if you define them as the things you choose to do in between the things you have to do. Some folks hobby is trashy tv. Others it's social media. There is no one grinding hard enough to have zero free time. Some of their "work" is actually their hobby. Source: I have two hobby "jobs" in addition to my full time career and being an active parent.

molsonmuscle360@reddit

right? or go to a big city and watch old dudes play chess and checkers. I grew up watching my mom, aunts and uncles play cards ever weekend
Taanistat@reddit
This is what gets me. Chess is a stripped down war simulation. Its largely symbolic, but that's what it is. So what's the difference between that, a sedentary, social, mental competition and playing Magic or D&D? Nothing at all. My game nights with friends I've had for 25+ years playing D&D or board games is no different than poker night for an older generation.
And then why is sitting at home watching soap operas or sports all night somehow acceptable, but sitting at home and playing Call of Duty or Final Fantasy isn't?
ValancyNeverReadsit@reddit
The Satanic Panic of the 80s is a big part of the anti-Gaming trend, and it is my belief it still informs much of the conservative Christian movement today. My mom legit believed that D&D was satanic, and was more or less anti-MMORPG as well but she never stopped me from the latter. Were she still alive she would probably be making snide remarks to me about being an adult who still plays games on the computer.
Taanistat@reddit
Funny that you mention the panic. I'm listening to a podcast about it right now (The devil you know). And yes, I can see the cross section of the Satanic Panic and the sentiment that video games are a child's toy being at the center of it.
guidevocal82@reddit
My grandma, who was pushing 80 at the time, played video games with me when I was a kid. She didn't think they were child toys. This kind of thinking is ridiculous, and why should adults not have fun? I get it if you go full Michael Jackson at his Neverland Ranch, but adults enjoy theme parks, superhero films, comic books, cartoons, AND video games.
blessthefreaks1980@reddit
The Satanic Panic is one of my ADHD niche interests. Please tell me more of this podcast.
Taanistat@reddit
It's an 8 part documentary podcast about the Satanic Panic in North America, studying the sociological and political implications. Then it branches out a bit concerning other moral, social and political bogeymen like heavy metal, etc. I've just started episode 4 this morning. It's done by Sarah Marshall. You might be familiar with her other podcast "You're wrong about".
It's called "The devil you know". So far I'd recommend it.
blessthefreaks1980@reddit
Thanks, friend!
TheFirebyrd@reddit
With things like D&D, sure, but I think it’s more fundamental with video games. A lot of people see them as childish and look down on them. I had a teacher warn me about the “dangers” of D&D (and make me promise to never play it 🙄) because she saw me reading fantasy novels all the time. I never had anyone fear for my soul over my video games, just act superior to me and tell me I’d give them up when I was older.

I remember having a conversation with my buddies when I was in my late teens/early 20’s. I pointed out that every one of us knew or had an old family member that was considered “cool”. They still had hobbies from when they were kids, were funny as hell and just said what was on their mind. And just overall different from a lot of other old people.
My theory was that we let that part of ourselves fade away as we get into careers, settle down, have kids because we convince ourselves that it’s “childish” to hang onto these things. My theory was that there is no actual good reason to give up things you love, so I wasn’t going to. Now, I never had kids so maybe that made it easier? But I will say my career and personal life didn’t suffer from hanging onto things I like to do, and in a good way I hear pretty often “you really don’t seem like a 44yr old”
Thank you for coming to my TED talk

For our generation, there's a strain of thought that gaming is for kids. When we were growing up, it mostly was... most games were simple, brightly colored things without a lot of narrative or emotional investment. Starting about the time we were in college, games started being more and more adult, with complex stories about adult relationships, adult comedy, sometimes with violence, sometimes with online social interaction. And it also became much more normalized as a form of entertainment. All of this has continued to grow and now many games are simply entertainment for adults, no different than movies or TV shows or books. But someone our age or older only has experience with games as something for kids. And they often stigmatize it as such.

I know guys well into their 60's who game some even game with their wives, some even met their wives through the games. What a lot of non gamer people and those who get validation from climbing the corporate ladder see is a time sink, that's it. They believe it's a childish past time and that if you have time to game you have time to do something "more" productive. They fail to see it for what it is, for most that is leisure time. Best part we are adults and get to decide what we spend our leisure time on! They fail to see that some play for the fantastic narratives that many games have or the community that there can be with social interactions. The last can have an incredible impact on older and retired people if they do venture into online games as they will get to talk with people and that can greatly improve their quality of life. Plus with finding like this here are great.
Even anecdotally through one of my friends experiences with his father who has been retired for a while and was doing ok until he started having mobility issues and required a hip replacement. This was a hard time for him and my friend noticed that the isolation caused from the lack of mobility even after two years, was starting to cause a cognitive decline in his dad along with more memory issues.
He finally convinced his dad after much cajoling to let him set him up a basic gaming PC and install steam and made a family discord server. Sold it as a way for him to spend time with his grand kids in different ways other than physically seeing them and it worked. They started with games like party animal, escape simulator, escape academy, Astroneer and other online board games like Life and Monopoly. Even after a year he saw a drastic improvement in his dad not only in mood but also in his memory and cognitive functions I can't remember what his dad did exactly but it was STEM based so the before and after was easily noticeable. After about 1- 1.5 years his dad branched out on his own and found satisfactory and started playing it with our telling my buddy, he only found out when he saw it pop up on his steam friends feed lol. Coming from a STEM background his dad loves it and wanted to figure it out so he could teach his grandsons how to play, which he does now with the eldest grandson . He also started playing games like civilization for strategy challenges on his own as well.
The kids are still fairly young and always look forward to playing games with grampa so hopefully that can carry on for a while more. As me says his dad seems even better now after 2 years of gaming mainly both his grandsons and a bit on his own compared to how he was even before retirement and his mobility issues. Like my friend said it may not help everyone but it helped us and he really thinks it could be beneficial for most seniors to some capacity.
Greyburm@reddit
Good for you and I have many many reasons to dislike your co worker from your description but I would rather game than spend time being upset with someone like that.
I have spent many years victimizing myself with that complex, and as I am also 51 and still game decided it might be just best to accept myself and make some friends who are weird like me in that way. My tastes have definitely grown and changed, and I like to think that the chess like game I play now that would have bored me to tears years ago is a sign of that.
I can see someone finding it strange for someone to play a game that their 8 year old plays. Thankfully hanging out and talking to children is the absolute last thing that I would want to do, but 36 year old kids I find to be well, I guess they are adults, so we can tolerate each other, and talk about life and generally have a great social experience discussing life while doing something ...yep largely dumb, but fun.

I’ve been gaming my whole life. Why would I stop? I still enjoy them. I still have a Thursday night D&D game, I can afford the good Magic cards and consoles now, my spouse and I have ah urge shelf of board games and RPG books, I go to gaming cons in the summer with other adults who love games, and my side gig is writing for an indie RPG company. I just turned 47. Gaming is s huge part of my life and I wouldn’t want it any other way. If growing up means I have to stop doing the things I love and turn off my imagination instead of using the growing up income to support doing the things I love BETTER with other grown ups who think like me, then fuck that shit. Gaming has been marketed to adults as much as kids for decades now, and the Boomer attitude of “put down your toys when you turn 18 and stop imagining” was never healthy. I’m happy and I’ll keep being happy.

My wife's dad is the same, he always played a little Civilization here and there or Rome Total War, that kinda stuff. But once he retired he went all in, now he's a bigger gamer than basically anyone I know, he started I think with Skyrim and then went from there, now he plays Fallout, Assassin's Creed, Starfield, lots of smaller games in between, and just the entire spectrum of modern single player games. He is an inspiration to me, I hope to finally have time to play all my games and read all my books in my backlog when I retire as well! Haha.

Same. It's just one among many of my hobbies and interests. Not an identity. Why people take such extreme stances on video gaming beyond me. As if we have to choose between playing all the time or never playing at all. If we're talking about maturity and responsibility, there are better ways to measure that.

Older or younger coworker?
I understand why a younger person would be surprised, because 40 sounds ancient if you don’t have a timeline of video games in front of you to realize that we were some of the OGs of modern gaming … but it’s the older people who think that gaming is an automatic waste of time that pisses me off. I had a coworker (roughly the same age, too) get weirdly indignant when she heard I was a gamer and scoffed and said something to the effect of “I could never be in a relationship with someone that plays video games. Like, shouldn’t they something to do?”
It was so needlessly snotty that I asked her if she needed to have something better to do to keep up with (among others, because it was all she talked about) Gray’s Anatomy, the Bachelor(ette), the Office, NCIS, American Idol, at least two other shows I can’t even remember the name of about slutty doctor drama, and four different versions of Love Island.
Apparently that’s “different” and I “shouldn’t judge how other people spend their time.”
The irony was so amazing I kind of respect her mental gymnastics prowess.

I grew up as a gamer and my wife did not -- still own all of my classic consoles from the 80s and 90s. We married in our late 30s and it was the primary hobby that I gave up because I didn't have anyone to share it with.
During 2020, I was managing retail while most people stayed home, and my wife was gracious to allow me decompress time in the evening. I began playing the Wii games that I never got around to (specifically the two Zelda titles), while she enjoyed watching and helping me solve puzzles. Occasionally she would ask if "I wanted to race," which meant Mario Kart or wanted to play a Lego co-op with me.
I purchased a Switch to play BOTW and TOTK and eventually bought a digital copy of Hogwarts Legacy to play later. She started playing while I was at work and finished the game without me. Once I figured out the style of game she liked, this became a theme. Now she's playing Skyrim like a boss so I have to wait my turn for the TV.

With me, part of it was also the multiplayer aspect. I don’t want to play with others - I like it the old fashioned way, and I just want to pay once and own a game.

Your last paragraph illustrates the differences in perspective very well. For those that grew up with gaming as a primary recreational outlet and passion, they make time for it and even prioritize it over other options. Everyone's different, and just like work-life balance, gamers maintain a game-life balance according to their needs. People who have instead filled their life to overflowing with sports and faith activities can't relate.

I gamed a ton in my teens and 20's.
I took a 5ish year hiatus when we started having kids.
Now I game... With the kids! Started things off this very morning by playing couch co-op Halo 2 with my 13 yr old son. Now I'm downstairs cooking breakfast with the wife, and he's switched to playing Sac Boy on the PlayStation with his baby sister.
They both play sports (a lot), get good (great, in fact) grades, play at least one instrument, and we go to church as a family together on Sundays.
How I/we choose to spend our free time (gaming) works for us... We like gaming. We do it together. And it isn't/hasn't had a negative impact on my kids grades/athletics/musical interests/social circles.
Some folks are weird about gaming tho....

My daughter and I recently played It Takes Two together. She's not as much of a gamer as my son is, but that was a real highlight for our father-daughter gaming together for me. We had a lot of fun with it.
And we've always enjoyed light hearted fair like Mario Party and Mario Kart 4-player as a whole family.
One pretty niche thing we got into a loooong time ago was the Orcs Must Die franchise on Steam. That started purely as a Father-Son thing but both the women in my life ended up taking to it and it's silly cartoon-y light hearted "violence" and we play it all the way up to 4-player cross-platform co-op. A real blast.

My husband has been a PC gamer since I met him and that was over thirty years ago. He's been playing PC games since they first existed, like the original Doom. I used to play with him a lot when I was younger, we got into Everquest for a few years and would play together with a group of our friends, then Dark Ages of Camelot. However once we had a couple of kids I just didn't have the time, or the desire to play like I once did. My husband who turns 50 this year has never stopped. I figure I'd rather have a guy who love PC games then one who is wrapped up in sports and needs to watch the game or go to the game every weekend. My husband's hobby is cheap, (he has a game pass so he gets games monthly and he usually buys the expensive games with Christmas or birthday money) he uses it to decompress and plays games with his friends, and he's happy and if he's happy I'm happy too. I suppose that would work for sports also, but I feel like he'd be more unavailable with those.

Beats him wasting his life away in some sports bar, am I right? And these days gaming can be a hugely social thing. With the loneliness epidemic all around us, I have been noticing he’s happier and much better connected with his good friends since they started gaming together. I’m really happy for him.”

It sounds like she was raised as a white middle-class sheltered Christian. My wife is a nurse who works with a lot of other nurses who are just like the woman you described. They all have three boys who play baseball, hunt, and go to church every Sunday, but they know nothing about cultures other than their own. The men live in fear of being anything less than a man, so they don't branch far from what they were taught. The same goes for the women. They do not understand what true art and expression is. These are the people who laughed at the Barbie movie, but never picked up on the existential tones. These people are what the Lego Movie pokes fun at. They don't understand meme or gaming culture. They don't understand anything outside of their own culture.
It may be different in other places, but here in the south, these people don't understand how other people who look like them (white and middle class) could be into anything that's not basic white folk culture. This is why there are so many white racists, even with their own kind. They don't see that there are other ways of life besides the way they were raised. It's bigotry, and they don't understand how offensive they can actually be when they vocally ask how anybody could be into things that are fun.

CS Lewis is one of, if not the, greatest and perhaps smartest Christian writers of the last century, and I guarantee smarter than this lady. This woman clearly fears childishness and desires to be "grown up", which Lewis says is childishness itself.
Please inform her that she should never have fun because fun is for children, adults must be serious at all times, no movies, no TV shows that aren't documentaries, no books that aren't nonfiction, no watching sports teams unless you are supervising your children but you can't have fun watching them you are here to observe them only.

Christian here .. I think having three kids and a full time job (and presumably some level of church involvement) changes your perspective on what is a sensible priority to do in your "free time."
If you don't have kids you have infinitely more time for hobbies. My neighbor is supporting her kids at sporting events almost every night of the week.
In that situation, I would probably ask how can an almost 50 year old be a golfer, a TV watcher, or any other hobby that demands more than a couple hours a week.
BeaniePole1792@reddit (OP)
Her involvement in Christianity is big - kids go to a Christian school, she only allows her kids to watch Christian shows - I didn’t know there was a streaming service but I guess there is a streaming service for everything! There was a time they were holding bible study at work.
So her not understanding gaming is me not understanding how someone can be that religious. I look at religion from a theological perspective and not just Christianity, but all religions.
The difference is I know there are all sorts of people and she came at me like this is the first time she heard people like to game. I wouldn’t question her Christian activities straight to her face and her parenting.

From the younger ones, I've come to realize that for many of them, they associate gaming entirely with online competitive play. That's all they've done since they were kids, and now many of them are outgrowing it and acting like it means that they're done with gaming themselves.
But they don't grasp that many of us have been single player offline gamers for 40+ years. I do everything slow paced, carefully, methodically, by myself on my own time, so there's no reason I'd ever outgrow my huge RPGs.

I'm 44 and I game a couple hours a day, though some days I don't at all. My 16 month old loves to watch me game, more than watching non-kid shows on TV, and reaches for the controller/keyboard/mouse. We limit exposure to screens so most of my play time is after kids have gone to sleep (or nap) but sometimes (mostly weekends) they get to see it during limited screen time.
As a lifelong gamer, I do look forward to playing more with them as they grow up. But I hope I can guide them down the path of maintaining it as a hobby to enjoy, and not an addiction to suffer. I had periods of gaming addiction that delayed my career and life milestones, and hope my kids will learn from my mistakes.

My wife’s grandfather was a gamer until he died at 91 last year. He started with Atari decades ago and had a giant screen PC that he played some kind of RPGs on at the end, with pretty much every gaming console made at various points in the middle. He just really enjoyed it.
mrjowei@reddit
Sorry but I plan on gaming until they pick up my bones at the retirement home.
spderweb@reddit
Some adults think that being an adult means you have to stop enjoying "childish" things.
I play videogames. I have a toy collection. I build Lego. I play boardgames. Paint miniatures. Watch cartoons.
I'm almost 43. The friend I mostly game with is 53. My wife also does all the things I do.
We don't care what others think. And we hang out with people that don't criticize our hobbies. Ask her what she does for fun. I'm sure you'll be able to make a comment about that.
ScottyDont1134@reddit
Why are they worried about what someone else does with their spare time?
bangobot46@reddit
People are really weirded out that I'm a 45 year old lady gamer.
Demondep@reddit
50M. Def a gamer.
Sounds like your coworker is not a fun person. lol
MrsMoonpoon@reddit
Proud 47/f gamer here. My son is gone now, I play often. That woman is a judgmental bitch.
BeaniePole1792@reddit (OP)
I just lost interest in some games and I hardly am on the PC at home. Right now it’s doing stuff with my kid. I tried playing with husband but he ends up smoking me and he’s 20 levels above but we enjoy other nerd stuff. Daughter games with her friends now. I will find my passion again whether it’s gaming or something else.
alienacean@reddit
She likes religion, other people might find that to be an immature fantasy world. We all have a thing we're in to, why not live and let live

My dad is 70, has been retired since 58 and has spent most of that time gaming.
supergooduser@reddit
I've definitely slowed down since my teens and early 20s but I still beat on average one triple A game a month.
I'm weirdly fearful of the day mechanics or gameplay stop making since to me (I don't like micro transactions or online play). But if that happens going back and enjoying the backlog of PS4 and backwards games I never got too isn't so bad.
Like I only played the first two Assassin's Creed games.

Went to a gaming convention two months back, and we were some of the youngest people there. Totally not making this up. Plenty of people who looked like they were in their 60s+
BeaniePole1792@reddit (OP)
Oh yeah.. I remember in my 20’s playing with 50 year olds in a comic shop. And I love going to different conventions.
I play games here and there - mostly mobile. I can’t sink the time in like I used to and haven’t found a game that interests me lately.
ladyeclectic79@reddit
Ngl lol your title triggered me. 😂 46 and still gaming, just not quite as much as I did as a kid due to lack of time. Favorite console is currently my Steam Deck tho, handy for when I gotta travel for work or just don’t want to get off the couch to get the PS5 controller or remote.
Original_Telephone_2@reddit
44 here. Play TF2, civ, red dead, fall guys, etc. Shit, I'm running out of time!

Isn't she too old to be believing in magic, spirits and such? I'd want to ask her what class and level she is in her fantasy game

PIG20@reddit
I'm 46, married, and with two grown children. While my overall drive and passion towards gaming has diminished over the last decade, it's still very much a hobby that I enjoy from time to time.
My wife has never had any interest but has always understood that it's something I enjoy. My daughter still fires up our old Wii from time to time since that was the system she played the most as a child, and my son is very much into it and now wants to graduate to PC gaming.
However, most of my friends haven't really been interested in gaming since the PS2 and early 360 days. And even then, it wasn't many of them. Most of them haven't owned a system since the Super Nintendo or Genesis.
Which is why going online to forums for gaming discussions was one of the first things I was doing online since most of my friends would have zero input or interest.
So, it's not surprising to me that you run into people who either snub their nose towards it or look at it as some childish hobby. I ran into this for a long time in my age demographic. I don't any longer because I just don't discuss with anyone other than the people I already know who game as a hobby or online.

I look forward to VR in my 60s and 70s.

I'm 43 and also play Helldivers with my kids. It's so awesome. Going from Lego Star Wars to Minecraft to HD2 with my kids has been really cool.
DoubleUDee@reddit
Don't trip, he's the normal one. I'm 46 and will always be a gamer. We grew up in that Nintendo era so we've been through the entire evolution of it. Growing up in a family with 5 kids, my parents had to scrape by to get me a gaming console so now that I can afford it, I splurge. My wife and I have a son in college and he also is a gamer too and we have a game room set up for us with his Xbox and my PS5. When his friends came over and jumped on the PlayStation, just walk over to the office where my gaming PC is. Life is too short so you might as well enjoy it!
jasonmoyer@reddit
I dunno how you can be in your 30's and still be into religion.
I don't consider myself a gamer, but I also have thousands and thousands of games. I treat them like any other kind of art, as long as it's doing something to challenge my brain and my reflexes and isn't just a barely interactive tv show I don't see what the problem is.
MinusGovernment@reddit
She probably plays Candy Crush on her phone in church during the sermon and at her kids games...

I started gaming at 5 (Atari). My son started 'gaming' before he could walk (I'd give him a spare Wii-mote and he'd wave it around while I played, making it seem like he was playing).
To this day, I'm still gaming although, like you, not as heavy since the kids were born (adulting and other things called responsibilities get in the way). My wife also games although to a much lighter extent and whenever she can fit it in.
I'm already fantasizing about gaming with my grandchildren. Someone made a comment on this thread about their dad being 68 and still gaming. That's a modest but real personal life goal of mine.
ShortDelay9880@reddit
I know someone in their 80s who until very recently still played mmos. He could probably still play the older ones, but hes also started getting dementia and that is making learning a new game difficult.
stykface@reddit
I'm not a gamer, but I'm a PC enthusiast because I'm a 3D CAD designer so I have a "gaming rig" at home. If I'm being completely transparent, I will respectfully agree that I personally do not understand PC gaming at my age or into their 50's, only if you have a family. By being a PC gamer, I'm talking about near daily and hours each day.
I grew up playing Doom, Quake, etc. I have a few games on my home PC, and every now and then (once every month or two?) I'll open up Doom Eternal and play for an hour or so. I will also hop on my laptop and play Roblox with my daughters and their cousins when they stay the night, just for fun.
I'm all about family activities and prying away from the screens these days, which is why I say I respectfully don't see why. If you're a loner? Then yeah, makes sense and knock yourself out. I think it's very important to be present for your children and spouse though. Lake days, days at the park, taking our RV out on weekends to camp, going shopping, movies, driving our golf cart around... tons of stuff to do with the kiddos while they're still kiddos.
Not casting shade, just my position. Families can be strong with parents being "my" definition of a gamer, it just takes intentionality to do so and if that is happening then you get an A+ for being a great parent.

I mean, whatever.
I'm still a gamer. It's my way of unwinding after a day of work. It also helped me quit smoking almost 20 years ago.
For the record, lately I've been enjoying Farthest Frontier and Grim Dawn on PC. I also have a backlog of games on PlayStation that I'll some day get to.
Overall-Ask-8305@reddit
I still game at over 40 and I’m going to keep doing it until I’m not physically able. Gaming is good for people.

The same way 20 year olds can be birders? Most hobbies don’t have age limits.
