DookieMcDookface@reddit
It went hard at my junior high
Markottu@reddit
Never had a pair because I had 2 siblings and my family was very middle class. But Girbaud, Pepe, and Guess were all popular. Some of the colors and patterns Girbaud had were very 90s. Yellow and purple stripes, crazy shit like that.
mtbguy1981@reddit
Never heard of them
DisastrousFlower@reddit
was not a thing in the rural midwest.
DBE113301@reddit
Girbauds? God, yes. Did I own a pair? Are you kidding me? Xennials that were raised poor, unite!
Born-Agency-3922@reddit (OP)
I couldn’t even afford to window shop where they sold these. I got my clothes at discount stores.
DBE113301@reddit
It's funny, my wife and I were both raised poor, but we have made a pretty decent life for ourselves. I'm a college professor, and she's a CTICU nurse. We moved to New York State from the Midwest. Wages in higher ed and healthcare are significantly higher out here than in the Dakotas, where we're from. So we've got the house with the in-ground pool and all the trimmings, yada yada.
Anyway, she and I talk occasionally about how our son will never know a life of want, like we had, and we wonder if we're doing him a disservice by raising him in a life of comfort. Such a shitty thing to ponder, right? The goal is to provide a better life for your child than the one you had, and yet we're wondering if that's even a good thing. Like, living with less in life as a child is how everyone should grow up? Builds character or some bullshit. Yeah, we actually have these conversations, embarrassing as it is.
Electronic-Ride-564@reddit
The fact that you and your wife are reflective enough to think about this is already a good thing.
Born-Agency-3922@reddit (OP)
Good for you!!! Absolutely nothing wrong with what you’re doing.
Firm_League3222@reddit
Yes the label on the outside of the zipper. Was too poor to get these.
OldRancidSoups@reddit
I’ve never even heard of these. I wore JNCO and Sutter’s
jamescb819@reddit
Jncos and kikwear
Alternative-Light514@reddit
Jncos as a ‘79er? Maybe it’s just where I grew up (major U.S. city/metropolitan area), but I only remember my friends’ younger siblings wearing Jncos. They also were real into rollerblading (fruit boots) and wore a lot of Echo sweatshirts. I had friends that had big pants they’d wear to raves, but I don’t think they were Jnco and they only wore them to raves. Were Z. Cavaricci’s popular wherever you come from? Would’ve been before Girbaud. Maybe it’s the spelling? Everyone called them “ja-bo’s” or “jih-bo’s”
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
My rollerblading boyfriend was super into JNCOs in 1995 and on. He was 1979. Even I wore them starting in 1996 and I was just a basic ass white cheerleader.
Alternative-Light514@reddit
Maybe my opinion is a little skewed because I skipped a grade when I was young and grew up more as a ‘78er, but I can’t recall any of my classmates wearing them. Were you the cool cheerleader that blazed and hung out with all the guys, oblivious they were all in love with you and from Clearwater, FL? Because that sounds just like one of my HS ex’s younger sister lol
_plays_in_traffic_@reddit
it must be youre from an out of the ordinary area. jncos were popular in my later high school years and a few after. i graduated in 96
Alternative-Light514@reddit
Maybe that’s it, not sure. Grew up in Dallas and had close to 800 kids in my graduating class
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
I mean I was the cheerleader that hung out with mostly guys and also blazed. Was I cool and were they in love with me? I didn’t think so at the time but in retrospect probably and missed out on a lot of cool guys by being fucking oblivious 😆 but I’m not from Florida.
bashturd@reddit
Only people I knew in the mid 90’s who wore jnco were juggalos. Most of us skaters were on the poor side, so we just bought oversized jeans and dickies from the thrift store.
OldRancidSoups@reddit
I grew up on Long Island. Doesn’t get more major U.S. city/Metropolitan area than that. I wore JNCO and Sutter’s in high school.
Alternative-Light514@reddit
Man I bet it was dope growing up in NY back then. I grew up in Dallas but had some family in Uptown and Upstate in Buffalo we’d visit every few years. I always loved going, but it also made me realize how lame Dallas was in comparison. Also, Girbaud was popular when we were in jr high, I’m pretty sure they phased out by mid/late-‘90s.
theeewizzard@reddit
JNCO and D LUX
LasagnahogXRP@reddit
JNCO was more mid 90s, Girbaud was early 90s. I wore JNCO too. Blew all my extra money at PacSun
captainwizeazz@reddit
I've not heard of them either.
cbih@reddit
Caffeine made good baggy pants too. Mostly for the raver set.
Crabbiepanda@reddit
JNCO for sure.
geekgirlwww@reddit
The JNCO kids and flared Jean kids just all standing soaked at the bus stop together
Osian_NB@reddit
Girbaud was big where I grew up, I even had a friend with a cat named Girbaud but jncos were more my style
Ohmytripodtheory@reddit
Girbuad jeans and Colehan loafers were all the rage in 7th grade.
Annhl8rX@reddit
The idea of the brand was popular in my school, but I don’t think anybody could afford the jeans. I remember a couple of people having T shirts, but don’t recall anybody with the jeans.
zffjk@reddit
Did they cost this much then too?
Born-Agency-3922@reddit (OP)
Nah, they were more like $60-$80 each.
DrMcJedi@reddit
Girbaud was all the rage in middle school for the popular kids.
Panelak_Cadillac@reddit
I rocked Girbaud......in the early-mid 90s.
portagenaybur@reddit
It was the era of CC Music Factory and MC Hammer to me
Stitchin_Squido@reddit
These were so popular at my school.
ScrotusSpunkmeyer@reddit
Most definitely did. In the Midwest. But wtf does supreme have to do with it?
A_Bad_Man@reddit
Were they much cheaper back then or are you Pablo Escobar's lovechild?
Panelak_Cadillac@reddit
Not cheap back then ($80 for a pair of jeans in the mid 90s), certainly not now either.
jdsmith575@reddit
I never had any, but this was the timeframe at my school.
TheDangDeal@reddit
I got a job where I could buy them for 50% off
FeelTheWrath79@reddit
That’s all i ever wore 🤦♂️
PinkFloydDeadhead@reddit
In middle school it was all Guess and Girbaud.
LilRedForeman@reddit
I tight-rolled girbauds and guess jeans in 4th grade.
Emergency-Purple-205@reddit
Omg yes popular in the early 2000
Born-Agency-3922@reddit (OP)
They were popular in the 90’s at my school.
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
Bro, the school I went to, the kids considered themselves if they had jeans to begin with. GTFOutta here with $450 jeans.
Born-Agency-3922@reddit (OP)
The price is irrelevant. I asked about the brand. They don’t sell this name brand anymore and that’s why they are going for that price as of now. They are considered a collector’s item from our era.
instant_ramen_chef@reddit
Nah bro. Im from the hood. We had Seymore Solo's and Ben Davis'
Born-Agency-3922@reddit (OP)
Ben Davis !
Scottisironborn@reddit
I had a single pair of Girbaud jeans, no fucking clue where my dad got them as a poor Tennessean and I actually got made fun of lol they thought they were off brand or fruity I dunno? lol
Born-Agency-3922@reddit (OP)
I never got a single pair, but I knew they were popular and expensive. We were too poor and I never asked for them.
Scottisironborn@reddit
I legitimately had no clue what they were lol I remember my dad off handedly saying they were fancy but I thought wtf is he talking about lol then hears later hear drake rappin about girbaud jeans and had a whole revelation moment.
andiinAms@reddit
Definitely!
Realistic_Advisor_82@reddit
JNCOs was the brand to have
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
In middle school. Along with Z cavariccis.
Definitely more of a gen x thing though.
After_Preference_885@reddit
There was a boy in middle school who I had such a crush on who wore these, Z Cavs and Oakley's 😂
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
Did he also rock a Vaurnet France sweatshirt?
_plays_in_traffic_@reddit
that was peak middle school years for me like 89-92. i had the splat tshirt
After_Preference_885@reddit
Always the color block silk shirts, remember these?
ScreenPuzzleheaded48@reddit
T’s, Bauds, and Ree’s
FatboiSlimmmm@reddit
‘99-‘01 Girbauds were big due to Juvenile and Cash Money. My HS these were the popular ‘Bauds
OtherlandGirl@reddit
In my school omg yes. First it was Z Cavarricci, then Girbaud - god help you if you didn’t have a pair . And they left just as suddenly.
nyXhcinPDX@reddit
This is not a thing any of us would have worn. They were founded in 1994 and weren't popular until the 2010s. The youngest Xennial would've been 26-ish when they peaked
OkAssignment6163@reddit
We had supreme back then?
Waste-Mycologist1657@reddit
I'm a 80's guy, graduated in 87, so no. Thank god.
roberrrrrrt@reddit
JNCO was middle school
missnickypearl@reddit
1977, Massachusetts. It was a big brand in junior high. I got lucky a few times and found them at Marshalls.
SometimesILieToo@reddit
Never heard of em. And no one in my school was wearing $500 anything.
Longster_dude@reddit
Never heard of these--but we's po'. JNCOs and Kikwears all day, every day though. PLUR baby!
red286@reddit
I don't think I ever really paid attention to the brand of jeans anyone wore.
Shoes were important. T-shirts were important. Jackets were if it was a Starter. Jeans? Not so much.
LasagnahogXRP@reddit
Yeah Girbaud, Z cavaricci, cross colors and Levi silver tabs.
GotWood2024@reddit
No.
DDrewit@reddit
Yeah, similar timeframe as Karl Kani I believe.
thelaineybelle@reddit
Midwest (Quincy IL class of 1999). Never had a pair, they were too expensive at The Buckle. I had a pair of Guess jeans from an outlet store. Never any Girbaud, Silver, JNCOs, or Mossimo (well, no Mossimo until it became cheaper at Target). I rocked a lot of weird thrift store stuff instead.
PeterPunksNip@reddit
Who burns nearly 500 dollars on jeans?
Prestigious_Ear_2962@reddit
catholic school had uniforms. my parents spent all their money on tuition so we never had trendy clothes.
Happy-Network9011@reddit
I was a Bullhead guy myself
HailSkins@reddit
Sliver Tabs were the 'status' jeans - but plenty of kids wore JNCOs. Never heard of those...
Beneficial_Cicada_37@reddit
Anchor Blue was big in my area.
Aromatic_Steak_196@reddit
Listen, rich boy, my school was in the middle of a corn field.
iputmytrustinyou@reddit
Lmao, no. My school district was mostly made up of students getting free lunches. Our parents couldn’t afford Walmart, let alone whatever brand that is. Kids who were considered rich wore American Eagle and Abercrombie lol
LineImpossible3958@reddit
You know who got that fire green ha
You know how to use a triple beam ha
Shit ain't hard as it seems ha
You keep your body clean ha
You got a lot of girbaud jeans ha
Some of your partners dope fiends ha
frawgster@reddit
Yep. I had a few pair. They were so expensive where I was. Close to $100/pair.
Girbaud jeans were a mid-status symbol in my school. The REAL status symbol were Z Cavaricci jeans. Those were prohibitively expensive.
TheGirlwThePinkHair@reddit
Did you grow up in NYC?
Born-Agency-3922@reddit (OP)
San Antonio, Texas. They were not this expensive at the time. Someone is just trying to sell nostalgia at that price.
Additional_Data_Need@reddit
My uncle wore some Girbaud shorts that went down to mid-calf. I thought he was so cool.
whyisthissticky@reddit
I remember the high schoolers wearing this
GorganzolaVsKong@reddit
No one in my high school could afford 500 dollar jeans
Born-Agency-3922@reddit (OP)
They were not this expensive back then.
unclestink@reddit
It was not but for some reason I had a pair of Girbaud baggy green cargo shorts that I fucking loved. No idea where or why I bought them and I don't really ever remember seeing the brand in stores. I dressed like a skater kid and wore JNCOs and shopped at Pacsun.
denverblazer@reddit
What the hell is this shit? I wrote JNCOs or shredded soggy cargo pants in the PNW.
_hi_plains_drifter_@reddit
Definitely had a few pairs. They were stupidly expensive but my parents finally gave up and bought me some.
Liathano_Fire@reddit
Uh, no. No one in my school wore $400 pants.
nachofred@reddit
I couldn't afford them, but people in my HS wore Girbaud jeans in the early to mid 90's.
Significant-Rush-129@reddit
It was more JNCO and Karl Kani on the boys at my school.
Pandoras_Fate@reddit
Oh yes. Hot tag. And they had an office in my hometown so we could go to their "factory shop"
BomBiddyByeBye@reddit
They were. These were the baller jeans. They were mentioned a good deal in hip hop from that time.
Futant55@reddit
They were popular with my older sisters crowd.
TheB1G_Lebowski@reddit
JNCO is all I knew of.
Slim_Margins1999@reddit
You know who got that fire green, ha You know how to use a triple-beam, ha Shit ain't hard as it seems ha You keep your body clean, ha You gotta lot of GIRBAUD jeans, ha Some of your partners dope fiends, ha
Appropriate-Ad-1281@reddit
Like every other Masshole worth his Dunks.
eastsydebiggs@reddit
You went to a school with medal detectors lol.
mattchewy43@reddit
I wore Levi's and Arizona jeans
Milkweedhugger@reddit
Yep. Early 90’s SE Michigan. Z Cavaricci, Girboud and an IOU sweatshirt. The jeans were always tight rolled in those early days. In the mid 90’s, grunge brought the relaxed, wide leg jeans into fashion and everyone stopped wearing their Girbouxs.
minnesnowta@reddit
Mid-90’s was the Girbaud era for me.
badchefrazzy@reddit
For the ultra wide jeans it was JNCO or you were marked a loser, at least to the alt/punk/goth crowd.
garden__gate@reddit
I’m curious about the demographics of this brand. I lived in a suburb outside a big city and this brand was mostly popular with Black guys.
Acceptable-Candy-527@reddit
yeah because of the stupid tag, my parents wouldn't buy me any. I think on my Christmas wish list they were spelled Jabows.
primabelladonna35@reddit
No one at my school could afford these...
Alternative-Light514@reddit
Very much so, right after Cavaricci’s went out. Crotch label gang 💪
meatsaballz@reddit
Yes, MFG was popular in my middle school in the early to mid-90s. Not so much in high school though.
Flimsy_Oven_7569@reddit
r/no
garden__gate@reddit
In middle school, yeah.
Flaky_While1612@reddit
Yup
Yellow_Curry@reddit
Holy shit This was an unlocked memory.
no_clever_name_yet@reddit
I had Girbaud jeans for FOUR YEARS STRAIGHT. My mom found some crazy sale and bought me two pair (big) and my big sister two pair. I wore mine until they didn’t fit and then moved on to my older sisters pairs.
I felt so cool.
Feralest_Baby@reddit
I got a pair of these for Christmas when I was in the 7th grade.
ReceptionOriginal501@reddit
Nope from Kentucky we had Wrangler. A lot cheaper than that
throwsplasticattrees@reddit
Yep! I remember finding a pair at Marshalls and had to beg my mom to buy them.
Jolly_Werewolf_7356@reddit
No, it wasn’t
