Very snotty.
StevesRoomate@reddit
that stuff absorbs water so aggressively. If you put it in water and forget about it for maybe 10 minutes, it turns into absolute sludge. I can't imagine using it in a recipe. I am thankful for your post, as I no longer need to imagine.
One_Worldliness_5052@reddit (OP)
It’s like jelly/snot/tide pods kinda texture. I’m gonna finish the whole pot. It’s not gonna be fun, but I made a big batch, and I don’t want to waste it. No amount of water will fix it. once it’s snot, it stays snot.
AusgefalleneHosen@reddit
Do not do this. The additional fiber will cause gastrointestinal issues up to and including blockage. That shit will continue to soak up the water all the way through your guts leaving you with a rock hard shitberg that you may pass with extreme pain, or need surgical intervention.

AusgefalleneHosen@reddit
Finishing this stew will be like taking half a container of metamucil. They're literally the same thing, psilocybin husk. That is not something that is medically recommended. There's a reason the container has big earnings about not taking too much 😉

SeventeenBaldRats@reddit
Unless they added an ungodly amount they'll be fine if they only have a bowl at a time. I make pizza bean burritos and each one has like 35 grams of fiber, I've eaten 3 of them in one day and I was playing the ass trumpet all day but nothing remotely resembling a blockage happened.
Miselfis@reddit
Not at this amount. As long as you drink enough water to accompany it, there’s not gonna be any issues. In fact, people should generally consume more fiber. It is good for the digestive system and helps prevent certain diseases.
Weltallgaia@reddit
My fiber says 2 tsp which i misread as tbsp and even then I was just going ham with a fairly large regular spoon. Honestly going a bit over recommended dose for me has been pretty good, but everyone is different. Dude with his 3 tbsp fiber soup ain't gonna have issues.

Always, always drink an appropriate amount of water with your extra fiber. It needs water to move along your digestive tract. I'd say drink at least 8 oz water for every tablespoon of psyllium fiber. More is better.

Yeah, I thought it’s a thickener. IT IS, but I think it’s better for making hydration jelly if I’m planning to travel to a desert.
New-Additions@reddit
Flour is the only thing you should use for that. That stuff just creates a sludge in your intestines to help you poop better.
uppenatom@reddit
I thought corn starch was the go-to? Is flour a better taste or just always on hand?
BAMspek@reddit
You just have to think ahead with flour. Sprinkle it in with the fat before you add any liquid to make a roux and cook out the raw flour taste. If you didn’t do that, then you can make a corn starch slurry and mix that in towards the end for a similar result. I think a roux works better though.
Outrageous-Wolf-2599@reddit
Not necessarily! You can do a beurre manié. Make a paste out of equal parts butter and flower and you can whisk that in just like you would a cornstarch slurry but with a more desirable result for a stew or soup.
NiskaHiska@reddit
My family also adds paprika to it
mshell1924@reddit
Seconded! I had to do a beurre manié back when I was way less experienced, and it worked like a charm plus it was so easy to do, even though it was the first time I had ever attempted it.
Outrageous-Wolf-2599@reddit
Yeah, it’s so easy. As long as you ensure the butter and flour are well combined and you whisk/stir thoroughly, there aren’t many ways it can go wrong.
notabigmelvillecrowd@reddit
This is the best method for something that needs a long, slow cook like stew, because you don't have to worry about it burning and sticking the whole time.
Shamus-McNasty@reddit
If you need extra thickening near the end, you can make a boille(sp)!
Mash equal parts flour and butter and toss it in!
Professional-Cap-495@reddit
Flour also makes it a little more opaque and has a specific taste, corn starch is more transparent and has a less noticable taste
uppenatom@reddit
Oh yeah, this makes more sense cos I only really use it when a sauce isn't thick enough after I'm cooking. I'm a big advocate of vaguely following recipes and just tweaking them as I go to my taste
DragonYourfeet@reddit
I like to use instant mashed potatoes
deppresio@reddit
corn starch/potato starch create a different texture than flour, but both are good. Corn starch will kinda give it a chinese food consistency which you may or may not want. Flour is more work though, since you have to create a roux or something similar or else it'll clump up (compared to just making a slurry for corn starch).
esarge112@reddit
I've seen plenty of people just mix flour with water and dump it in. I was shocked it worked as a thickener and didn't clump. Its not how I have ever done it but it does work.
Potential_Flower7533@reddit
It works fine but it can taste a bit like flour if not done properly
deppresio@reddit
Ah, I'll keep that in mind
zuklei@reddit
Yeah my grandma taught me to “repair” thin gravies with flour + milk.
deppresio@reddit
That's cool, might have to try that!
esarge112@reddit
I am not sure what ratio of flour to water they used or what consistency they looked for but good luck either way lol
lickdicker21@reddit
I always do it, don't even measure it I just do it by eye, couple spoons of flour and then enough water to make it a full liquid
uppenatom@reddit
Yeah, I'm from Aus so a lot of my cooking is Asian cuisine. Only time I pre-plan to make a roux is lasagna or Mac and cheese
Glowing_despair@reddit
Corn starch is the lazy thickener.
Flour based roux is the OG and Royalty of thickeners.
meh_69420@reddit
The lazy thickener is dehydrated mashed potatoes. You don't even have to mix it with water.
Maynrds@reddit
Holy Shit! Are you a prophet that is genius.
JamesFromAccounting@reddit
It’s not great from my experience, left the soup kind of lumpy and mealy even after trying to incorporate it for quite a while, was hoping for a smoother consistency.
Dangerous_Shake_7312@reddit
I add a couple of tbs slowly while stirring, in stews sometimes as a last minute thickener and never had any issues. If it becomes lumpy maybe you add to mush to fast
JamesFromAccounting@reddit
Eh, I just prefer the cornstarch slurry method, just happened to be out of cornstarch that time and had instant potato flakes in the pantry instead.
Rhodin265@reddit
You can also dice a potato and add it right when you add the liquid. The starch will leach out. This works best with a long simmer time.
uppenatom@reddit
Yeah I'll use that in soups but not in Asian food
Ben_Kenobi_@reddit
They're just different. Both are good and used a lot. Also, there are some general cultural differences where some cuisine might go for one or the other for different dishes.
I use both a lot, but they are different enough that's it's worth thinking about what to use for a dish. Im about to butcher this, but Corn starch is gloopy while flour is smoother. Its like takeout Chinese food sauce is corn starch while a stew or gravy will use flour.
PerfStu@reddit
Cornstarch makes it smooth and glossy.
Flour makes it dense and matte.
Same same, only different.
But srsly I tend to use cornstarch to thicken a little, like stir fry. Flour for gravies and denser sauces, like chicken and dumplings or shepherds pie.
New-Additions@reddit
The gluten in flour helps a lot and corn starch doesn't have that. If you need to go gluten free.
uppenatom@reddit
I don't, but I do cook for coeliacs sometimes so good to know
TheCrazedGamer_1@reddit
Literally any starch can be used, not just flour. Potato starch tastes especially good.
DeceitfulEcho@reddit
You can use starches in smaller quantities as thickener (too much and it gets more jelly like), such as corn starch. You can also use starch heavy ingredients like Khao Khua or potatoes.
For chowders you even have people who vehemently defend that no flour should be used for thickening and that it should just come from potatoes and reducing.
Some flours like tapioca flour are starch heavy anyways and may cause the same sort of gelatinization problems.
bouquetofashes@reddit
Flour, corn starch, or you can even use like xanthan gum or kudzu powder.
momo76g@reddit
You can get a similar slimy result with Okra. Or if you want to be exotic you can use the Andean "melloco".
mintmonaka@reddit
If you can't eat gluten, use corn starch (not corn flour/meal!) to thicken stuff. Don't just dump them dry in hot liquid tho, you'll get lumps of starch. Dissolve them in a little bit of water first, pour it in little by little, adjust as needed.
Meatt@reddit
Cold water specifically.
GTCapone@reddit
Reminds me of when I substituted bone broth with collagen for beef broth when I made Wagyu beef stew. It was so rich and creamy that it had an almost jelly-like consistency. Tasted amazing but you could only eat a small serving at a time.
Bertie_McGee@reddit
Ah I thought you were using it for gut health reasons. And if you're doing that, maybe add it to foods that have similar texture like okra?
sean_incali@reddit

Bertie_McGee@reddit
Sometimes, you just get a really smart idea that maybe needed a peer review. My example: I like to sub cottage cheese for mascarpone in lasagna to reduce cost. It gets blended down to an appropriate texture and layered in. I also like to add spinach to the cheese layer but it didn't quite evenly spread out. Bright idea! Why not blend them together? Gentle reader, do you know how unsettling mint green coloured cheese is? It stays mint green after cooking too. Looked terrible, but tasted good and it really was more convenient for assembly.
SpiritFingersKitty@reddit
I decided to make a honeydew melon custard soaked cake once. Apparently, there is an enzyme in mellon that converts lactose into an extremely bitter compound. At first my mixture tasted great, and as I kept tasting it slowly became more and more bitter until it was inedible.

I can't stand psyllium husk! I'm aware how healthy it is but it's just so nasty.
Ok-Owl8960@reddit
That's why I take the capsules, 5 a day and my cholesterol has dropped significantly after one month on my blood tests! To be fair I also slowly increased my fiber as a whole in my diet too, like whole grain cereal I eat a bowl of every morning + more veggies around dinner and other whole grains.
Says on the bottle to take 5 capsules up to 4 times a day (like before each meal) for those who don't get enough fiber in their diet to begin with.
ChumpyThree@reddit
Im in the same boat. Wound up giving my psylisum husk to one of my crewmates who insisted he LOVED the stuff.
For the next week the dude would walk up to me with the biggest smile on his face and say stuff like "oh man im as clean as a whistle!"
I dont know how but my hatred for this stuff is unreasonable.

Lol, I came to mention fiber, soluble in particular. I take capsules of it and swear by it because like 90% of what I eat has none or an insignificant amount. Unless beans... beans have a grip of fiber.

Some people think they're too good to use recipes and end up ruining good ingredients.
My ex said her mom cooked by smell alone and her food truly reflected that. Can't just throw a bunch of random shit together and call it lasagna.
It's ok to tweak recipes if something seems off or you get a good handle on it after following the recipe at least once, but those animals shouldn't have died so they could become mystery soup.

stevembk@reddit
No that’s way too much especially if u are going to eat the entire thing yourself. It will mess with your digestion if u aren’t used to that much fiber. Also make sure that there is plenty of liquid to mix it in.

Yea. Use less or only add a little to each serving instead of the entire batch. I don’t taste it cause I use less and add a lot of spices/hot sauce and a little apple cider vin to my stew. Next time you need to thicken stew, use a roux. Equal parts butter/oil and flour. Simmer for a short time and add the resulting mixture to the pot. If some is stuck in the pot, ladle some soup in there, swish it around and pour it back in.
A half a cup does almost two gallons of stew(volume of all ingredients, not just the liquid) for me.
Hit4Hit@reddit
I’d probably take this an smear it on a toasted crusty half of a roll. I imagine it would be more enjoyable.
VisionAri_VA@reddit
That texture is going to be the least of your concerns if you eat that; psyllium husk is a natural laxative.
Sciencebang@reddit
Its not like a pharmaceutical laxative, its plant fibre; just a regularly occuring and necessary laxative. It holds shape very well in the lower digestive tracts. You should be regular but it is not going to force movement. That said i take it in capsule form thrice daily. You dont hear people saying museli is a laxative despite the fiber. You should have no concerns about getting more fibre. This texture is definitely the most concerning part
VisionAri_VA@reddit
I am fortunate enough not to suffer from constipation that often but psyllium is my go-to when I do. It always works.
not_bored_@reddit
