Easy, do both😁 Greenland = polar bears, seals, dog sledding and helicopter ride between villages. Iceland = waterfalls, hot springs, geysers, big 4x4 community and super good hotdogs 🤓
After staying over 10 nights on a glacier I'm totally hooked, I have taken small campers, rooftop tent and ground tents, I would say that rooftop tent are the easiest in setup and closing but ground tens are sometimes better due to high winds. Campers are super comfortable but a bit more tricky to get them far into the glacier. Normal campsite do no longer work for me :)
when i was in iceland i was told very explicitly that camping anywhere othere than a campground was strictly prohibited. how did you go around this rule?
When I was in Iceland we just sorta drove to one and stared walking around all the ice without our running shoes. Some time later someone comes by YELLING at us to get away as we didn’t have any proper shoes and were risking our life
Well walking in glaciers in the summer time can be really dangerous, but at least you got back safe and sound😁 some people just overreact when they see people walking without crampons and safety gear.
I shipped mine from Canada to Iceland late last summer. It's much easier and cheaper than people expect - about $3k one way all in. Super, super easy paperwork. Nothing complicated at all.
Iceland was 10x better than I was expecting, and I was expecting it to be the most stunning place I've ever been.
Amazing scenes! Love the remoteness (reminds me of overlanding in the desert) but not sure how I'd cope on the cold of the glaciers. I hope you've got a good diesel heater keeping you warm! :)
Great pictures but I'm mostly drawn to the overhead shot of the 3 Jeeps and 4 tents. Was the vehicle and tent setup, in close proximity, done because of the potential for high winds? If so, any idea what the wind speeds were? If weather patterns hold true, seems in Iceland you'll also get the chance for high winds once the sun starts setting and also into the night.
Yes we parked the Jeeps to make shelter it was-10°c (14°F) and it sowed in the night and this was in 7th of June this year 😆 we are in the middle of the second biggest glacier in Iceland so the weather can be really unpredictable
Although not on a glacier, I'm definitely familiar with winter camping in high country areas. It can be absolutely beautiful, no or light winds, and then once the sun goes down, hell can be unleashed. I've even been in a situation where I started to be concerned that it was a very bad idea to camp where I was... and I wasn't on the side of a cliff or anything like that.
I periodically see posts in this sub where some are wanting to camp in snow where it just seems they really don't have much experience camping, but they want to do it because it looks cool. Seems they have no idea what they could potentially be faced with.
Yeah camping in snow or winter can be tough if you don’t know what you’re doing. With experience and the right gear it makes it easier but you get cold fingers when packing down😆

It’s so hard the pick between a trip to Iceland or Greenland.

Are you allowed to camp on a glacier?
Rakso1977@reddit (OP)
Yes. Wouldn’t go there without someone that is knowledgeable about the area.

Yes that is true but I had permission and wc with me and that’s makes it even better 😉

OP, just wow 🤩
Do you hire a guide or have a good local expert friend?
Rakso1977@reddit (OP)
I’m from Iceland and have good experience in glacier activities. Always recommend to get someone to guide you.

Amazing pics. Spent a week in Iceland this summer and it was nothing short of magical. I’d love to ship my jeep over and explore for months.

Rakso1977@reddit (OP)
