What's a 90s band you weren't into at the time but now triggers fond nostalgia?

I stumbled on Goo Goo Dolls on NPRs Tiny Desk and watched the whole thing. I was too edgy / cool to listen to them back then, but I've probably heard Iris a hundred times.
yeahoksurewhatever@reddit
been blasting Madonna's Ray of Light, mostly the song but also the album which I never heard. Didn't care either way back in the day. It's so good both because of and despite the nostalgia, I say totally subjectively
Cautious_Artichoke_3@reddit
Daughtry. Family Guy got me into them
TheVexingRose@reddit
Chumbawamba. When Tubthumping came out, I thought it was the dumbest song I had ever heard. I wanted to smack the kids in my class when they sang it. Now, I quote it weekly.
Timmonidus@reddit
Alice in Chains, because I was 11 at the time.
Illustrated-skies@reddit
MTV overplayed Seals “kiss from a rose” so much that I loathed him. My middle-aged self loves Seal now.
agentmkultra666@reddit
Kiss from a Rose is still too corny for me, but Seal’s Crazy was playing somewhere I was recently and I finally really listened to it and it is a solid banger. I’m gonna go listen to it right now in fact😂
xRVAx@reddit
I'm the only Seal fan that I know
I listened to first eponymous album (with Crazy on it) on repeat.
I also listened to the second eponymous album (with Kyss From A Rose) on repeat.
It was good music, even before the Batman soundtrack made it famous.
bootyhole-romancer@reddit
There's two of us then.
I'm the same. Loved his music since first hearing "Crazy" and "Killer."
I've never been able to contain myself when "Prayer for the Dying" comes on. Any time it does I have to (attempt to) sing tf out of it.
B_Reele@reddit
There are a few of us confirmed Seal fans out there. Been a fan since the first album.
Gotta mention “Don’t Cry”. I’m required to belt that one out when it comes on.
Illustrated-skies@reddit
Anyone seen him live? I want to.
petroldarling@reddit
Saaaaame... It was so bad. And yes, now...
veepeedeepee@reddit
I remember the barber I went to from childhood to high school always had a soft rock station playing in the waiting area, and Kiss From a Rose was always playing. I associate that song with waiting for a haircut!
goofytigre@reddit
The only two reasons for me to ever listen to 'Kiss From a Rose':
https://youtu.be/aVcxjxLipf0?si=dE2H6EOnVBt64kvA
and
https://youtu.be/G76nKGWRLPU?si=qJ4VOErkwayDDJmJ
ItsADarkRide@reddit
It also appears twice in Season 1 of Yellowjackets, which is another excellent reason to listen to it. The teen Yellowjackets sing it for their "Doomcoming" dance in the wilderness in S1E09, and it's playing at the class reunion in the adult timeline in S1E10.
Btw, I love Community even more than Yellowjackets (and I love Yellowjackets a lot), and I definitely have to watch the second link you posted. That looks funny!
adamroadmusic@reddit
This is the video that made me come around on this song: https://youtu.be/awnexOow0pA?si=1dv4-KWomUOydAUD
Dan_Berg@reddit
I was hoping one of those clips was streets ahead
Jo_MamaSo@reddit
I always teased my mom for liking Michael Bolton in the early 90's. As a kid I thought he was so lame lol (a thought cemented later by the movie Office Space).
Then about a year ago I was driving and Time Love and Tenderness came on the radio. My 40 year old ass tuned into that Jay Z meme fairly quickly 😂😂. It's a damn bop.
I of course had to call my mom and tell her lol
JLLIndy@reddit
One of the first CDs I got was Michael Bolton but I was like 10, I think it was Time Love and Tenderness. Anyway, How Can We Be Lovers is a fucking banger.
eSTARr35@reddit
There are gen z kids on YouTube reacting to “How am I supposed to live without you”, and thankfully they love it! It really is an amazing song - the songwriting and Michael’s voice 😍
Shhutthefrontdoor@reddit
You must check out the song Jack Sparrow by Lonely Island (if you haven’t already). It was that song, along with his Valentine’s Day special on Netflix, that made me fall in love with him in my middle age.
adumant@reddit
You ever see videos of him on YouTube joining buskers for a couple songs? Very fun. He’s a cool dude.
worksnake@reddit
I remember the Kiss From a Rose era of MTV! It was everywhere!
GreenZebra23@reddit
I heard that song recently for the first time in a long time, and realized it's actually a really good song when you're not hearing it 20 times a day
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
Kiss from a rose sucks and always has
wooltab@reddit
I never disliked Seal, but I didn't truly appreciate him until decades post-90s.
Lotan@reddit (OP)
I'm finding myself reading each reply and just nodding.
secret_2_everybody@reddit
Toad the Wet Sprocket and Gin Blossoms. At least that's what I'd answer if someone asked "what did the 90s feel like?"
Illustrated-skies@reddit
Awww, love Toad!
tec_0707@reddit
Yes!!! Agree!
Unpainted-Fruit-Log@reddit
Helmet. I completely ignored them and now I’m kicking myself.
therealpopkiller@reddit
Finally saw them live earlier this year and a guy ran on stage, jumped off, and landed on top of me, knocking me on the ground. wtf man we’re in our 40s. Then some kid was like “that’s what happens when you get this close” and I was like no shit twerp, I’ve been going to concerts since before you were born. Anyway, that was the day I officially became old.
Unpainted-Fruit-Log@reddit
They need to have a separate section for children under 40 at these events.

Bush. I kinda hated them in the 90s. Now every album they put out, I like more than the previous one.
petroldarling@reddit
Bush was a guilty pleasure for me in HS. I didn't realize they were still making albums?
audiate@reddit
I wasn’t into Pearl Jam at the time but now I really am.
petroldarling@reddit
That's one for me now. I wouldn't say I'm into them now, but I do enjoy them. I kind of hated them in high school.
LatinBotPointTwo@reddit
My mum still calls the singer Jeremy. Any time a Pearl Jam song plays on the radio, she'll go, hey, that's Jeremy. XD
bootyhole-romancer@reddit
Aw, that is so adorable 😍
DoctorFenix@reddit
See them while you can. Their lives shows have shorted from 3 hours to about 2:20 but they’re still amongst the best live bands in the industry.
dadlyphe@reddit
Does Eddie still drink wine and wax on about politics?
Love the band, but never got into him using a show as a place to talk politics.
I wanna hear Black, not politics.
DoctorFenix@reddit
You probably shouldn’t listen to them at all if you don’t want to hear about politics.
dadlyphe@reddit
I’m fine with some politics in the songs, it’s when he rambles on between songs and carries on about politics that it gets me.
They do put on a great show and I’ve seen them numerous times over the years.
Even have a shirt from Raleigh a several years ago when they didn’t play because of the NC bathroom laws. It’s got a long letter written on the back and is reminiscent of the old alive shirt that had the yellow sheet “taped” on the back of it
DoctorFenix@reddit
I don’t mind anyone using their platform to express that soldiers should be brought home safely, childhood disease should be eradicated, and our environment should not be polluted to enrich the already rich.
I hope they keep doing it, frankly.
Some people need to hear it.
elphaba00@reddit
I got so tired of hearing The Wallflowers and One Headlight back then, but now it’s a “stop everything and listen” song
RuinsAndRoses@reddit
I loved them back in the day and still listen to them, but I saw “them” in their current incarnation (Jakob Dylan and a random backing band) a couple months ago and it was the most painful concert experience of my life. Just awful.
elphaba00@reddit
My mythology-loving preteen would probably compare it to the Ship of Theseus, a philosophical question that asks if an object remains the same after all of its original parts have been replaced over time. So is it the Wallflowers, or is it Jakob Dylan out there solo and slapping the Wallflowers name on it?
My most painful experience is Cherry Poppin Daddies, but for entirely different reasons.
B_Reele@reddit
Same for me. Hated it back then and now I love it.
6th Avenue Heartache still goes hard too.
markltzero@reddit
Three Marlenas is so damned good too
WillBsGirl@reddit
Josephine is my jam, but that one is a close second.
Express_Signal_8828@reddit
I completely forgot about this song until it was played in the show Friends from College (about a group of Xennials, I guess), and I basically lost it. Ran to buy the MP3; good song and so much nostalgia.
BeenCleverForever@reddit
Bringing Down the Horse was the first CD I ever bought after switching from cassette tapes, the whole album is still great.
Cool_Dark_Place@reddit
Same here. I remember not really liking it too much back then, but now... takes me right back to the beginning of my freshman year at college.
Phoniceau@reddit
Not an answer to OP, but it seems Gin Blossoms are super popular with everyone… I only know them as basic mid-90s rock, and stars of the Empire Records soundtrack… looks like I need to give them a real listen!
HailSkins@reddit
Garbage. I liked them OK back in the day, but I fuckin' love them now. New album SLAPS.

ItsADarkRide@reddit

Lotan@reddit (OP)
Oh man. Garbage was my favorite band in college. I saw them live the night that Stupid Girl released.
When Version 2.0 was released a friend and I drove from Phoenix to Hollywood to see a "Secret" show they were putting on ahead of their full tour. We got there really early and just hung out in front of the venue.
At some point Shirley Manson rolled up and everyone flocked around trying to get autographs. I somehow made it to the front of the group and stood face to face with her, opened my mouth and nothing came out. Then I just kind of walked off like an idiot.
Express_Signal_8828@reddit
LOL. I mean, I get it: that woman has always been and will always be a goddess --and I'm a hetero female but she's pure fire.
HBKnight@reddit
Just caught them last month and that was a bucket list show for me. So good!
la_toxica84@reddit
Garbage played KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas in 2023(?) at the Forum in LA and there was a pretty big skirmish breaking out on the floor and she stopped their set to cuss them all out 😂😂😂 and unfortunately since there were like 20 bands in the lineup their set got cut short but she still rocked out 🤘🏽
enters_and_leaves@reddit
New album you say?
HailSkins@reddit
The first half starts a little slow, but every song on the second half is a banger.

I wasn’t really able at the time to separate the musicians from their most annoying fans, or the general vibe of “I’m trying to sound tough or cool by being a middle class or better suburban white kid who talks about rappers all the time”. I hated that mindset as another white kid and I couldn’t mentally split the artists from it, but time has given me the ability to do that.
Far-Pie-6226@reddit
Not sure it counts but I thought Brian Adams was so lame that I purposely didn't listen to Ryan Adams simply because his name sounded too familiar. Now, I can't hear Summer of 69 without tearing up and I wasn't even alive in the 60s or 70s. I also really like Ryan Adams' music now.
zoey8068@reddit
Third Eye Blind, hated them as a kid but now it just takes me right back to sitting around with friends listening to the radio.
veepeedeepee@reddit
I wasn’t into them then because I felt like they were everywhere, but as an adult, I’ve seen them live a few times within the past decade, and they’re really great live.
DoodleBug179@reddit
I think their first album is one of the best of the 90s.
IceSmiley@reddit
I always loved them and blasted "Graduate" when I was driving away from my school for my final final exam 😎
KlassenT@reddit
Their debut was a peak formative album for me, it's a genuine no-skips in my eyes. Even knowing there are nostalgia goggles involved, it still holds up so well with some additional life experience behind it.

Dance music, including from Europeans trying to sound American and producers who didn't properly credit their singers: Haddaway, La Bouche, SNAP!, Black Box, etc.
Witty-Common-1210@reddit
Took me a long time to really get into Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Pink Floyd
Speaking of Goo Goo Dolls they had a single way before Iris called Long Way Down that was really great. Then Iris came out and I was all “wtf it’s this?!”

Dave Matthews Band
Rhizobactin@reddit
This. They were SO overplayed in the 90’s a girl band. It seemed like the female equivalent of Tool - you just had to love them. I did not…
Coming back, they’re music is great. Not my fav, but they have some talent.
So Much to Say and Too Much still make my ears want to bleed as it has been seared into my brain from 90’s DJ’s
Masterweedo@reddit
Insane Clown Posse, I liked them in the 90s, but they were one of the most hated groups of the 90s, but now they appear to be getting their flowers. It's kind of odd, nice to see.
Rhizobactin@reddit

Its_The_Water360@reddit
Got to be Beck. Didn't realize how deep his discography was.
Rhizobactin@reddit
Beck had some that is downright garbage imho. Then maybe 1-2 songs of the album are like an awakening.

Alice In Chains.

Lotan@reddit (OP)
I can't tell if this is a joke or not, but it made me chuckle. This reads like, "I was in a dark place and the only thing that pulled me out was Chumbawamba"

No, because he drank the whisky drink and then the Vodka drink then the lager drink and then the cider drink.
Rhizobactin@reddit
Yep. Colbert did a blip on his 10/15/2025 show?
Screencap at the time if anyone is bored enough to pull it
ItsADarkRide@reddit
It makes more sense if you know more about them than just the song "Tubthumping." Admittedly, I haven't listened to much of their music, but I do know that their most popular song was not the one that was most representative of them. From the Wikipedia article on Chumbawamba:
Lotan@reddit (OP)
I had no idea. Appreciate the context.
Seems like there's a real lore dump on Chumbawamba if you dig a little deeper.

I was an ignorant punk kid back then so I scoffed at those pop anarchists. I then rediscovered them and they've been one of my favourite bands for maybe 20 years now. Both for their musical output aswell as their political activism.
CrouchingDomo@reddit
I made my friends take a whisky drink, a vodka drink, a lager drink and a cider drink, in time along with the song, one New Year’s Eve. We called it Tubthumping, it was awesome, and I’m not allowed to pick activities anymore.

thepuncroc@reddit
I just wrote about the content of a lot of their songs.
Most are dark, incredibly subversive, antisocial, maladaptive, and completely unfit for public consumption.
I'm a huge fan.

thepuncroc@reddit
I've been drunk with some of his friends and drinking buddies, sounds like he had a good heart when not consumed.

DrewBaron80@reddit
I love how their lyrics tend to be dark in a particular way - as a teenager I was the kind of guy who fell in love with any cute girl who made eye contact with me, and I was a somewhat attractive kid myself, so I had all sorts of ill-fated high school relationships.
Songs like Found Out About You (and others) really put me in the shoes of 17 year old me...a place I'd rather not be, but it's cathartic too, since I'm able to look at how far I've come (I celebrated my 20th anniversary over the summer).

Dan_Berg@reddit
But they both started out mainly as hard rock/alt-metal and included pop songs amid their heavier songs that became hits, and ultimately decided to ~~sell out~~ focus more on that sound.
KittySwipedFirst@reddit

LucyRebar@reddit
Yes it is and I'm proud to die on this hill.
spaceporter@reddit
I call it "grocerycore". I have a friend whose Spotify playlist is basically just songs of the supermarket, and Gin Blossoms pop up regularly.
It's a bit pejorative, I suppose, but it's a particular type of pop/easy listening where most people know most of the lyrics and don't hate the song.
thepuncroc@reddit
If people knew the lyrics to most Gin Blossoms songs they wouldn't listen to them,.and wouldn't grocery core them.
Stalkery obsession of porn stars and getting all fucked up for murder bc of possessive obsession (Kellie Richards), suicidal depression on an alcoholic slide to becoming past tense (Lost Horizons), battling the DTs (idiot summer), misogynistic sorority girls are all sluts (angels tonight), slut shaming your ex (found out about you), death of innocence after the guilt of knowing you had an active role in driving your friend to suicide while you financially profited from the shtick he invented (until I fall away).
I think, oddly enough, "it ain't cheating 'cause she reminds me of you" is probably their most PG grocery core song. Because that's the one where it's clearly tongue in cheek.
RIP Doug Hopkins
CSATTS@reddit
I worked at a Safeway when I was 21 and got so sick of the "grocerycore" music because it was mostly 70s and 80s pop and light rock. Now when I go into the store I love most of the songs since it's mostly 90s hits and I realize the kids working there now probably feel the same way about my music.
jcduwrong@reddit
I’ll probably get heat for this, but this is how I feel about Foo Fighters.

It's never stopped being weird to me how diverse their audience was back then. Everybody I knew had New Miserable Experience. Didn't matter if they were into metal, rap, boy bands, techno or Bulgarian deep house, they all had a copy.
Yaden@reddit
Who doesn't have Collective Soul right next to their Pantera CD!?
ItsADarkRide@reddit
I saw Collective Soul open for Our Lady Peace this year, and I enjoyed them immensely. "The World I Know" was my Covid "theme song"—I hadn't listened to it in years and years, and had never thought much about that particular song, but it came up on a '90s playlist during lockdown. I'd been seeing footage of a completely empty Times Square, and the world was very different from the "world I knew," so I listened to it a lot in 2020 and 2021. It was really good to see it performed live, since it had meant a lot to me during lockdown.

So many responses here I agree with! However, like so many others here, the Gin Blossoms are a band that I liked ok as a tween and teen, but now automatically comes to mind if someone asked me to describe the '90s without adjectives. Just saying "the Gin Blossoms" is how I'd do it. How that happened I have no clue. Maybe the movie Empire Records has something to do with it? Anyway, I happily listen to them now and my inner '90s girl wants to go back in time.

Overall-Bullfrog5433@reddit
Where I worked in the 80s and 90s there were younger people playing Talking Heads and R.E.M. constantly. The music was not really bad but I always winced at David Byrne as well as Michael Stipe and what struck me as their manufactured, performative weirdness. But these days I find the music more enjoyable and it is partly nostalgia because I liked the folks I worked with then and we are all out of each others lives these days.
Skywren7@reddit
I thought Counting Crows was annoying, same with Blues Traveler. But now if I hear Mr.Jones or Runaround, I am singing along. Haha

I’m late to the party, but Silverchair. Dismissed them as Nirvana wannabes right off the bat, but later someone whose taste I respected insisted I give Diorama a listen. How wrong I was! They’re now one of my favorite bands, and I celebrate their entire catalog.
Oomlotte99@reddit
The Smashing Pumpkins. I liked them well enough but in the last few years I’ve really gotten into them.
Meander86@reddit
When Blink-182 first started taking off I was so into them. Enema of the State was one of my first CD purchases, but sometime towards the end of grade school and beginning high school it was not cool to like them. I desperately wanted to be cool and be into the most obscure indie folk bands, and underground punk. So I shunned Blink for years and years. Now almost 40 I’m so incredibly nostalgic for that early pop punk sound. I’m not ashamed.

Nirvana and Bush
ItsADarkRide@reddit
I hadn't listened to Bush in years and years, but I had the opportunity to see them this year, and I went. Beforehand, I listened to the '90s albums again and some of the more recent ones. I wasn't expecting Sixteen Stone to hold up and was surprised when it really, really did. Now I'm wondering why I didn't listen to Bush in such a long time!
The concert was good, I went with my brother (born in 1983, so also a Xennial), and we both agreed that the best performance that night was "Little Things," although it probably isn't in either of our top five favourite Bush songs. Well, it might be now.
Also, Gavin Rossdale is still really hot!
cropguru357@reddit
I saw them two years ago, opening for Alice In Chains. They really overdelivered. Great show, and agree that the old tunes held up well.

I was a huge Sarah McLachlan fan as a teenager, but it's been a very long time since I've listened to her. I went to my first Sarah McLachlan concert a few weeks ago, the Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th anniversary tour, and I found out that I have definitely not outgrown her. It was awesome. The Tragically Hip. They were on the radio all the time growing up in Michigan, since the best stations in the area operated out of Windsor. So I knew a ton of their songs, but they weren't really any American teenager's idea of a cool band. Unfortunately, it wasn't until Gord Downie's cancer diagnosis that I decided to give them a proper listen, and now I'm a big fan.

Hmm, I will have to listen to that 2021 album, then! I did enjoy their first two albums at the time, and that's one of the very few things that I tend not to admit to liking. Now? BSB and Nsync are in regular rotation. NKOTB is still corny.
seanalltogether@reddit
I came here to say the same. I would never have listened to them intentionally growing up, but I feel like I know half of their songs through sheer osmosis of late 90s radio/mtv. Now when I hear them it brings me right back to high school parties.
SteveEcks@reddit
As a white band kid from Indiana, it was very easy for me to write off rap and hip hop as not something that was for me.
About 5 years ago I was listening to KDAY in Los Angeles and they were just playing song after song after song that I could not turn off and I was just jamming.
Since then I have become a very big fan of Ludacris, Outcast, Jay-Z, Dr Dre, Busta, Biggie... Looking back Jurassic 5, Blackalicious, Atmosphere, and Eminem we're the investigators for me. About 24 years ago, I had a college roommate who had a massive CD collection of different rock/punk/metal albums. Found the whole discography of Faint No More. That day I burned those albums onto my PC and just went through the discog from beginning to end.

Deftones. Didn’t gaf about them at the time but they aged really well. My college aged cousin and I talked about how a lot of their songs are really more shoegaze and that lumping them in with nu metal was a super weird choice back in the day.

I’m still way too edgy and cool for the Goo Goo Dolls.

Every time I hear the GooGoo Dolls, I am reminded that the Mats did it better- the hooks, the home run swing lyric.

I'll sign onto this.

Weezer.
Didn’t know what the fuss was all about but then went to a concert in 2011 where they played Pinkerton start to finish and it blew me away.

I saw GGD this summer. The crowd was glorious.

More aughts than 90s but I can't believe I used to turn my nose up at Brittany Spears. She's pretty amazing and so much fun to sing along with.
Other find-agains include NIN, B.I.G., Janet Jackson, Beastie Boys, Fugees and Laueyn Hill, lots of hip-hop stuff.
Weirdly I can't anymore with Live, Pearl Jam, any of those drama rock groups I used to be really into.
I was such a snob as a teenager, thank god I discovered weed in my late twenties 😅😅
MoistPerception@reddit
They’ve been name dropped a couple times already, but I will throw another shout out to Gin Blossoms. I primarily listen to ‘90s indie and first and second wave emo, but I do also dig some ‘90s jangle rock, and Gin Blossoms have a few songs that scratch that itch.

The entire rap or hip hop genre. I was a goth kid.

Nirvana for sure - my brother was into them when we were younger, but I didn't like the albums he had. I'm starting to find the gems I really like.
There's quite a few bands i'd either skipped over, or hadn't heard of because I was in the wrong country, and I actually love discovering them now (and learning the names of songs I've liked for years)
EarlBeforeSwine@reddit
Yeah. I didn’t come to appreciate them until quite recently. I always dismissed them as simplistic crap, and imagined myself as too much of a music snob to stoop to listening to them.
I’ve come to appreciate (some of) their music recently. There is a lot more sophisticated stuff going on there than I ever gave them credit for.

Their song from the City of Angels soundtrack lives rent free in my head, and not in a good way. You couldn't escape it on any of the radio stations in '98.
Green Day does this for me. I don't care for them (never have) but for some reason hearing them takes me back. Buddy of mine at the time was a big fan, maybe that's why. Hope he's doing ok these days.

I never listened to the lemon heads in the 90’s but I listen all the time now.
RaygunMarksman@reddit
That's funny was just musing on this. I used to think they sucked at their peak but damn those songs have aged very well.

Goo Goo Dolls (also). And Britney and David Bowie. That is all.

Dinosaur Jr.
I guess they’re not strictly a 90s band but a good portion of their work was in the 90s.
I was and am mostly into metal but the older I get, the more I appreciate bands like DJ and The Cure, various jazz musicians, ambient stuff.

Never cared about Blink-182 or Tom DeLonge at all but suddenly couldn't get their songs out of my head when they announced that tour. Just didn't fall hard enough for them to pay those ticket prices and went back to not caring about them just as fast. Was willing to pay a lot but not THAT much.

In the 90’s, I was really into grunge, rock, alternative played on commercial radio. I had no time or patience for indie music. I get to college and my friends are into a ton of indie bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas is the Reason, Modest Mouse, Jimmy Eat World, etc. At first, I couldn’t get into those bands at all. It took a couple of years of pretending to like the music and going to shows with friends for me to fall in love with it. It was about the turn of the century, when I officially came around on these bands and I’ve loved them ever since.

Rage Against the Machine. Not sure why I wasn't into them back then.

Never heard of them until my ... early 30s, I think?
Cool_Dark_Place@reddit
I actually kinda liked the Black Parade album, even though I was probably about a decade older than their target demograph when it came out. My Gen Jones dad was a big '70s prog. rock fan, so I grew up listening to lots of Pink Floyd, Yes, and Gabriel-era Genesis, so I kinda appreciated the music they were paying homage to.
Zelengro@reddit
All of them, to be honest. I was never a boy band follower but I find any music now takes me back, even music I didn’t like at the time. I still don’t like all of it exactly, but yeah there’s definitely a nostalgia there. The weirdest thing is now defending corny boybands from people who think they’re corny. Like wtf do I care? But nevertheless there I am saying, ‘No you don’t get it, they were huge. Like, global. You think One Direction was big? No. Nooooo.’
