Boss took me to a nice expensive restaurant, however the food wasn’t really good. Appetizer are an egg, 4 small tomatos and 4 really soggy popcorns

Is it better than the turtle soup you've posted?
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
I think a bit better yea, better than egg sugar water soup too
OrneryPangolin1901@reddit
Oh it’s you again
kalel1980@reddit
Man, the comments on that post had me in crying of laughter. What a wild ride that was.
Rabbid7273@reddit
POV: you'd rather let your boss take you to embarassingly bad restaurants than give you a raise
BrightPhilosopher531@reddit
So fancy though~
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
I really want higher salary rather than meals but he always to take me to overpriced restaurants that tastes ok/bad rather than giving me a raise.I appreciate his gesture tho. He’s nice to me
LucidRamblerOfficial@reddit
Dawg… you’re falling for it.
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
What? What do you mean
LucidRamblerOfficial@reddit
Turn down the mediocre dinners. It’s only offered to placate you. Take a meeting in their office where they can’t give you an overpriced meal to make you forget what you’re asking for. It doesn’t matter if he’s nice. If you’re a good worker and you’re asking for a raise and it’s being met by “fancy” dinners, you’re being made a sucker.
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
I kind of just prefer eating my selection of slop.
I think he can’t give me a raise bc I’m working from home, most of my other colleagues don’t work from home and most of time I don’t need to go to the company. If he does give me a raise I think my colleagues would be unhappy.
I am the only person in my company’s creative team, I’m in charge of video editing, graphic design (online shopping ads, online shop decorations, products introduction), packaging design, product/advertisement photography, very occasionally I do a bit 3D modeling. Overall my workload is ok but I’m not required to be in the company so I guess that’s why my wage is lower than the others. I earn about 850 US dollars a month
wafflestep@reddit
If he can afford expensive dinners he can afford a raise, but if you're happy, you're happy. Personally I would look for a competitive salary and if you like him give him the opportunity to match the new rate. However, It sounds like you work in a different country than most of the commenters and I have no idea whether $850 is good for your area. But in the US you'd be making almost 5-10x that for the work you've described.
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
It’s double the minimum wage in my place.
Andrewplays41@reddit
I'll tell you friend if you were making double minimum You're sitting at the bottom of the pay scale for a larger company. To each their own but these people aren't lying to you You're being placated, probably because you're not replaceable
TryingToStayOutOfIt@reddit
Double the minimum wage isn’t even a living wage at this point in most states.
Myrtylle@reddit
Op is not living in the US. Depending of the Country, minimum wage might be something actually decent.
I don’t know where OP is, but as an example Canada’s federal minimum wage is around 1.7x US federal minimum wage (including the current exchange rate).
Hdjbbdjfjjsl@reddit
So Jack shit?
Aggleclack@reddit
Again, if he can afford these dinners, he can afford a raise
Julian_Sark@reddit
Might be that he wants the dinners, but taking an employee with him lets him justify it and lets him put it on the corporate tax form or some such ...
Aggleclack@reddit
Meals aren’t deductible on taxes, regardless, but maybe a corporate expense account. You’d be shocked how easy it is to just get things paid for by a business. If he’s the boss man who owns the company, he can just make that decision himself and he needs no validation whatsoever.
allbotwtf@reddit
as always depending on country, sometimes even states.
in germany eg you can deduct work lunch from taxes but only if you get a special letter from the restaurant telling exactly who was eating there, and of those people who are on the letter some must be from your company and some from another, or be some politician and so on so that the lunch has a benefit to the ongoing business.
DeFiBandit@reddit
Maybe he wants a special dessert too…
Sithlordandsavior@reddit
Boss may be doing the dinner thing out of their own pocket because they can't give a raise but feel like OP deserves some kind of reward. I've had managers do that before.
Supabongwong@reddit
$850USD for a full media team all in one????
Holy shit, that is insane.
I worked at a major toy company - my colleague in the US who had the same title as me (Photographer) got paid in USD - $7300 before taxes.
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
I’m in a developing country. My wage is about a little below the normal office workers wage standard
chelsfc2108@reddit
Even in Vietnam doing all that work you should make at least $1500 a month
Supabongwong@reddit
video editing
graphic design (a) online shopping ads, b) online shop decorations, C) products introduction)
packaging design,
product/advertisement photography,
very occasionally I do a bit 3D modeling
I'm not sure how big this company is, but these are generally one person's job per item.
You are getting worked like a dog.
ChungusMcGoodboy@reddit
If youre the only one in your role/team, then other people comparing their salaries to yours for different work is ridiculous.
Lickmylithops@reddit
If you do your job as well as everyone else, there's no reason to pay you less. Don't accept that as any sort of reason. Unless you are missing a part of your job by having to work from home, that's not fucking real.
sunshineriptide@reddit
If you do all that, you deserve a higher wage.
freddbare@reddit
They should never know
Sargash@reddit
850 For that is criminal dude.
Helpful_Location7540@reddit
Your the only person on the creative team! That’s not as tan! He’s saving money not paying for a whole team! YOUR FALLING FOR IT! Apply for other jobs then present them to him and ask for a raise. If your doing everything someone else would gladly pay you more for your efforts.
pacdude@reddit
You’re doing so much for so little money
Julian_Sark@reddit
Don't we all ...
SalvationSycamore@reddit
Dude, what? It doesn't matter where you work from, it matters whether you are providing value through your work. Also how many hours you work and how many responsibilities you have. It sounds like you have a lot of responsibilities and if you're being taken out for dinners you are probably providing a lot of value. How many hours do you work? If it's more than like 10 hours a week you are almost certainly getting fucked over.
I highly suggest consulting with people who are good at advocating for themselves in the workplace.
ManyRespect1833@reddit
I mean the work you’re doing seems pretty skilled and covers multiple areas and you seem like an important asset how many hours a month are you working for 850$?
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
It’s an ok ish wage in my country
ManyRespect1833@reddit
Oh okay if you’re not US than I am not familiar with wage prices
Tadasho@reddit
Serious question, are used to being abused? Why are you making excuses for someone, why are they inviting you to fancy dinner, why popcorn with the eggs, isn't you salary less than minimal wage?
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
He also likes to buy me clothes, those are very nice and durable and most importantly they are inexpensive. Expensive stuff are nice but I don’t like it when other people gift me expensive things. I feel nervous if they do
KitsuneRisu@reddit
Um... not sure bosses are suppoaed to do that.
Maybe?
I'm not sure. Seems weird to me that he's buying you fancy food and clothes tho.
whisky_biscuit@reddit
Yeah this whole situation sounds kinda strange.
You sure he doesn't want to bang you Op?
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
He was in romantic relationship with my mother
National_Frame2917@reddit
That doesn't answer the question.
SalvationSycamore@reddit
Newer and male lol. Maybe the boss thinks of him like the son that could have been?
Lost_But-Seeking@reddit
Or the boss is bisexual?
Frigate_Orpheon@reddit
Omg he's secretly your father! 😂
CaptnFlounder@reddit

Him
spider_X_1@reddit
Hmmmm....I would try to keep things professional if I were you.
pristinemailboxhaver@reddit
It sounds like he probably writes them off as business expenses.
Seastrikee@reddit
Your boss takes you for dinners one on one?
What for? What kind of team do you work in if you don't mind my asking?
Effective_Gene5155@reddit
Why would a boss buy fancy dinners 1 on 1 and buy their employee new clothes?
I can't think of any reasons at all.
SalvationSycamore@reddit
The boss was apparently banging OP's mom previously, so that's a factor
Seastrikee@reddit
Lmaooo I was thinking that too but wanted more information first, I wasn't sure if this was like a team dinner or something 😅😂
Effective_Gene5155@reddit
Looking at their profile Im pretty inclined to think this is all bullshit, but the implication OP is going for is pretty obvious
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
That’s not nice. he’s just taking care of me
Effective_Gene5155@reddit

Seastrikee@reddit
Ahhh I see, that makes more sense I suppose. In any case, dinners are not supplements for wage increases - but they can be a nice professional courtesy I guess.
The clothes thing is a bit odd, but as long as you're comfortable with it do your thing.
spider_X_1@reddit
Are you a woman?

Dave-James@reddit
Meals are cheaper and don’t require employer matched contributions to pensions/retirement/etc.
strawberrypizzaaa@reddit
It’s missing a smear of balsamic vinegar (or something similar), so it’s not fancy enough.

plaguefinder@reddit
What did the restaurant even call this? What's this appetizer supposed to be?
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
I didn’t get to order food (boss did it) so I don’t know what’s the name of this dish, but this is one of their appetizers
MZsince93@reddit
You don't even get to order your own meal? This has to be rage bait.
labenset@reddit
It's pretty common for really fancy places to have just a 8-9 course "chefs selection", and many places it is the only thing they serve. They will accommodate to food allergies and dietary restrictions but besides that you don't really order anything, especially if you spring for wine or drink pairing.
It seems a little crazy but the logistics make more sense, when you know exactly what dishes you will serve to every guest you can use the very best and most fresh ingredients. I've been to a few and never been let down. The price is outrageous, but I think of it as an event and not just a meal. People spend hundreds or thousands on tickets to sports or concerts, and a really fancy meal like that is no different.
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
He been to this place and I didn’t so he told me to let him order it
MZsince93@reddit
Do you have any kind of backbone?
Stellaeono@reddit (OP)
I simply don’t have preference for a new place how does that make me have no back bone?
MZsince93@reddit
Are you sleeping with him? And don't say "he dated my mother", that isn't an answer.

I'm going to take that as a yes. Good luck.

It’s supposed to be 4 small tomatoes, 4 popcorns and a soft boiled eggs cut in half. But I suspect the soft boiled eggs are not made in the restaurant bc I have had exactly same kind of eggs from supermarket in my country
itmightbehere@reddit
I think this would be odd but okay without the popcorn. The tomato-juice soggy popcorn sounds awful
Uhhhhhm_okaaay@reddit
Everything reminds me of her
lurkingwithjoy@reddit
I swear some of these restaurants just cobble random food together and say it is fancy so rich people buy it and pretend to like it. The art of bullshiting is one of my favorite forms of art.
Electrical_Menu640@reddit
The emperor has no clothes.
VexTheTielfling@reddit
Popcorn is weird.
mixreality@reddit
Popcorn, tomato and egg, in what world does that sound good.
I saved a pic from a dinner like that. This was one of the "multiple courses". It's like a contest to see how pretentious they can be.

vilahoney@reddit
I swear fine dining has turned into just the chef spending an absurd amount of money on ingredients we can’t even taste because it’s cooked in old rancid oils
LionBig1760@reddit
Thos isnt fine dining.
This is a restaurant pretending that theyre fine dining.
Large-Training-29@reddit
It's about !presentation!
Lost_But-Seeking@reddit
Presentation is vital. If you don't splurge on the s'more costume, it's just arson.
vilahoney@reddit
That brings me to another point, why is it always so damn dark in those places. I can’t see my fancy feast! 🧐

Reason #1 I don't respect rich people, if your restaurant can't fill me up plus leftovers I don't want it. Plus these "fancy" meals always look like what gathers in the drain basket in the sink.
subito_lucres@reddit
I try not to worry about what others do with their money. But I assume that folks with substantially more money than me probably don't care about the amount of food they are getting. I am not rich but I like eating and trying new things so sometimes I go to small plates places. I don't expect a lot of food, but I would hope it still tastes good!
betacow@reddit
Glad someone already offered you an egg in that trying time
Remote_Ad_969@reddit
I’ve never understood the allure of restaurants like this. Even if the food is great, I just can’t seem to justify paying so much for so little when there’s so much food insecurity presently happening. My sibling’s a chef and always trying to get me to go to these places but it feels like a waste if I don’t fully appreciate it the same way. I don’t judge other people for enjoying it but I’m just as happy (if not happier) with a small Mom & Pop place to fill my stomach for a lot less money.

Be happy you’re getting this side of it. I had a boss once who’d take me to lunch a couple of times a week because we split the tab, but he and another co-worker drank wine and I didn’t, so I was subsidizing their afternoon buzz.
