What was the first and last cassette that you bought?

As I was driving to night class and cranking blink-182, I had the memory of driving around in my early 20’s listening to “Enema of the State” on the tape deck in my work truck. Then it dawned on me that that was the last cassette tape I’d ever purchased. So I got to thinking about my first. Way back in fourth grade I bought Aerosmith’s “Toys in the Attic”.
So let’s hear em!
Tall-Frame9918@reddit
My first was Dire Straits Brothers in Arms. My last was probably Use Your Illusion 1 and 2.
Moist_Translator5766@reddit
I think the first one was either the soundtrack to miami vice or bon jovi slippery when wet. Im pretty sure the last one was either metallicas black album or panteras cowboys from hell
detourne@reddit
The first I remember buying personally was the TMNT movie soundtrack, the last was probably some Maxell blank tapes to make mistakes for friends in the late 90s, or maybe even 2000.
Fools_Errand77@reddit
First? Technically, probably a storybook with read along cassette. I bought a few of those with Christmas money. Music? Faith No More, “The Real Thing”.
Last? Hole’s “Celebrity Skin”. But I didn’t so much buy it so much as disappeared from the music store I worked at until 99. I hated my boss, so I took it out on the inventory. Funny story, I found a couple of those tools you used to remove the cassette cases from the security frames in a box of random junk last year.
BiddleCity_Bullshit@reddit
Deftones My Own Summer single cassette purchased at Best Buy after seeing the video on 120 minutes.
WilliamMcCarty@reddit
First was Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits and the last was Jon Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory, the soundtrack to Young Guns II
Musubi0420@reddit
Last was 3-11 😂 first?…. The Boss “born in the usa” ?
Hot_Dingo743@reddit
I never bought Album cassettes, I bought blank cassettes and dubbed other people's cassettes or CDs.
stm602@reddit
Not sure about the last, but I certainly remember the first
AnthrallicA@reddit
Man, I listened to that album so much 🤘
lessthanpi79@reddit
and now I'm envisioning the Turtles doing Mr. Brightside.
atampersandf@reddit
You win the Internet for me today.
AnthrallicA@reddit
First cassette was Weird Al's Even Worse. Last cassette was, I think, System of a Down's self titled.
ataphelion@reddit
First was The Cure's Staring at the Sea Singles album and last was the soundtrack to Aliens. Went on to CDs after that (Disintegration was my first CD purchase).
dragonbornsqrl@reddit
I went My Little Pony to Jagged Little Pill
Unending-Flexionator@reddit
I can remember getting the Simpsons music tape. Maybe the last tape I remember was the debut Body Count.
Ok-Potato-4774@reddit
I actually broke my first tape of Body Count. I managed to find another cassette copy with "Cop Killer" on it before that song was banned.
Unending-Flexionator@reddit
I broke mine too! The tape got screwed up and I took it apart and re fed the tape properly. I can't believe it worked
Ok-Potato-4774@reddit
I know my first one was Alice In Chains Facelift back in 1991. I think the last one I got was Traveling Wilburys Volume One used about ten years ago.
lessthanpi79@reddit
Reasonably sure it was Def Leopard's Hysteria first and Weezers Green last.
atampersandf@reddit
Hysteria was pretty early for me, too!
lessthanpi79@reddit
I haven't listened to it since I heard Nirvana for the first time. Not sure how it holds up.
LeopardCoin@reddit
Wow, didn’t even know the Green Album was released on cassette!
lessthanpi79@reddit
I'm pretty sure I bought it from BMG on clearance, do maybe only club release?
LeopardCoin@reddit
That would make sense
atampersandf@reddit
Prince - Purple Rain
Temple of the Dog
IceSmiley@reddit
First: Casingle of Straight Up by Paula Abdul
Last: Mother Love Bone I found in a thrift store I think around 2018
flatulating_ninja@reddit
I've never actually bought a cassette. My cousin had two copies of Appetite for Destruction and gave me one that I wore out. I started getting CDs when I was 9 or so instead. I didn't have a vehicle with a CD player until college so I made a lot of mixed tapes or complete album copies from my CDs though.
Unusual_Memory3133@reddit
The first cassette I owned was a bootleg copy of Bowie’s album, Lodger which my military brother got cheap in Hong Kong. I have no recollection of the the first actual cassette I bought - can remember first 45, first LP, and first CD, but not first cassette for some reason. The last one I bought was a used import of The Associates album, Perhaps, bought some time in the mid-90’s because it had different tracks than the CD version
Taint_Flicker@reddit
Hank Williams Jr - Greatest hits was a gift from a friend's
Limp Bizkit - three Dollar Bill Y'all
HeywoodJaBlessMe@reddit
First is easy: Bell Biv Devoe with my allowance money in the 2nd grade
Last is much harder. Almost certainly a set of blank cassettes to make mixes with
solomons-marbles@reddit
First was something like the Stand By Me soundtrack and last probably a rack of XL-IIs.
draculawater@reddit
I can’t remember the first cassette I owned. The last one I ever bought was Rob Zombie’s Hellbilly Deluxe on Halloween 1998. My cousin and I pooled our change together and had just enough for a cassette, not the CD. We had a great time blasting it in my truck before setting out to be little hellions and TP his friend’s house.
No_Cartoonist981@reddit
First was Everyone’s Free To Wear Sunscreen
Knowhowtomadison78@reddit
I remember we had a neighbor who owned a music store in the mall, and my Dad and I went there and he gave me the Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas cassette. I was probably 4 or so... not sure about the last.
Profeshinal_Spellor@reddit
You were Sam Goody’s neighbor?
GreenBeardTheCanuck@reddit
Another for Chipmunk Christmas. My last, I was the Armageddon soundtrack in '98 or '99 I think.
Fawners@reddit
This was my first as well. That and chipmunks sing the Beatles. My last cassette I bought was in 2004, Top Gun soundtrack.
AMugOfPeppermintTea@reddit
My family had that on vinyl!
lessthanpi79@reddit
It's no Chipmunk Punk, but its a solid choice.
Profeshinal_Spellor@reddit
First - U2 War Last - Pearl Jam Ten (Third Award)
Columbia House’s dumb ass sent me 12 CD’s that year and then I was forever in the future
UptownJunk802@reddit
First: Bon Jovi Slippery when wet Last: wedding singer soundtrack!
firstlight777@reddit
First- Black Crowes, Shake Your Money Maker Last- I don't remember new from back in the day but I kept buying used cassettes through the 2000s bc of affordability and tape deck in car. I just bought last week from eBay two Tom Petty tapes, for nostalgia mostly, Into the Great Wide Open and Full Moon Fever, but I collect music stuff.
KudosOfTheFroond@reddit
Last cassette I got was Off The Deep End by Weird Al Yankovic
slademccoy47@reddit
I don't think I ever purchased cassette tapes. By the time I was buying my own music, CDs had complete taken over from cassettes.
s-multicellular@reddit
First Alice in Chains Dirt…
Last, I have no idea. I had very limited income when I was young and a cassette was a treat. So I remember that buy.
By the time tapes were going away, I had a decent part time job and can’t recall.
PuzzleheadedAbies678@reddit
I don't remember the first one I bought, but the first one I found and fixed (everyone got their #2 pencils) was License to Ill someone had throw out because it came unspooled.
The last Cassette I bought was Cop Killer by Body Count. I was positive that the controversy was going to make that Cassette valuable.
RoyDonkeyKong@reddit
First was the Karate Kid II soundtrack.
Last one in the Tape era was Dude Ranch back in 1998.
But most recently was Zooropa at a used records store. I bought a vintage shelf stereo that had a tape deck, so I felt it necessary to have at least one cassette for it.
poodog13@reddit
First cassettes were Lionel Richie dancing on the ceiling, Michael Jackson, thriller, and Bruce Springsteen born in the USA. No idea what the last one was.
Kitchen-Fisherman280@reddit
Jay Z It's a Hard Knock Life
WendyPortledge@reddit
I think my first was probably NKOTB, followed shortly by Sun Jammin’. No memory on the last.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I bought a bunch of used hair metal tapes after the fact, but the last 'new' cassette I bought was pre-grunge. "CDs are the future."
I think it was Don Henley End of the Innocence
Taanistat@reddit
First: Bon Jovi: Slippery When Wet (1987, with savings from my sporadic allowance) $7.00
Last: Jurassic Park orchestral soundtrack (1993, around Christmas) $13.00
Chemtrails_in_my_VD@reddit
First was Pearl Jam Ten. I think the last was the Dangerous Minds soundtrack.
Accadius@reddit
My parents wouldnt buy me official albums. My older brother, sister and me got blank tapes for xmas one year and were aloud to record from our parents albums or off the radio and we each had our own walkman to play them on. By the time I started getting official albums they were on cd.
tkecanuck341@reddit
I got a gift card to Blockbuster Music when I was 8 or 9 years old. I didn't know anything about music, so I asked my mom what I should buy. I took her advice and bought Michael Bolton - Time, Love, & Tenderness. I played the shit out of that tape. My older siblings all made fun of me for it. I didn't know any better.
My second cassette was Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II. I didn't really know anything about them, but I knew my sister (7 years older) liked them, and I was fascinated that it came with two tapes instead of only one. I was around 11 at this point and had thrown my Michael Bolton cassette in the garbage because of all the teasing that I had to endure. GNR is still one of my favorites to this day.
The last cassette I bought before I switched over to CDs for good was The Cranberries - Everyone Else is Doing it, So Why Can't We. It also ended up being one of the first CDs I ever bought. RIP Delores O'Riordan.
gordoshum@reddit
First: Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill Last: The Offspring - Smash
macklin_sob@reddit
License to Ill was my first too.
SweetCosmicPope@reddit
First one I played was Appetite for Destruction. First I bought was Nirvana Nevermind.
Last…I think probably The Verve - Urban Hymns.
StillhasaWiiU@reddit
I wasn't into music until i got a cd player for my 14th I only bought one cassette, The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails. And I only did that because it had a extra track not on the CD
Verbull710@reddit
No idea
Ok_Researcher_9796@reddit
People remember that?
Aardet@reddit
First: Tiffany (debut album)
Last: Mr Bungle’s Bowel of Chili (only available on cassette bc it was only available as a bootleg)
Quite a progression in 6 years!
zozospencil@reddit
I can’t remember the last one I bought—I was on to CDs pretty quick. Used a Sony Walkman plugged in via tape deck in my lil 88 Mustang. But the last tape in my hand that I remember listening to was INXS, album Kick.
TijayesPJs443@reddit
First: Deee-lite “World Clique” Last: 50 Cent “Get Rich or Die Tryin”
Final_Cow_3843@reddit
First: Abba Gold. Last: Depeche Mode Music for the Masses
I am a fossil.
Cattle-egret@reddit
T-U-R-T-L-E Power had to be the first. Not about the last.
officialdougjudy@reddit
First was maybe Metallica "And Justice For All"? Last was, IIRC, was Transistor by 311. I made the CD jump in 93-94, but got Transistor on both bc the cassette was $4.
41rp0r7m4n493r@reddit
I dont know. Potentially Slippery when Wet or Jersey. I know the first CD i purchased was the sound track to Independence Day.
TikTokTinMan@reddit
The first one was the Fat Boys when I was six hahahaha. The last one was Nevermind by Nirvana.
SalukiKnightX@reddit
Never bought a cassette, not even the CD/cassette adapter for cars. They were gone from stores when I finally had money.
Lumpy_Tomorrow8462@reddit
Started with Rap Traxx 2 finishing up with In Utero. My cassette years seemed long at the time, but in hindsight they were very short.
InstantTurnOn@reddit
First cassette was Kylie Minogue's "Kylie" album. Last cassette was Björk's "Post."
sarithe@reddit
First tape I bought was 'Nevermind' by Nirvana.
Ironically, I have bought more cassettes than any other physical music media in the last few years. They have seen a bit of a resurgence in the hardcore and metal scenes.
The last one I bought was the 10th Anniversary of 'Sunbather' by Deafheaven.
aweedl@reddit
Probably something by Bryan Adams for the first tape, but I never stopped listening to cassettes and buy at least a few new tapes by (primarily) local bands every month. Not even sure what the absolute most recent one was.
I do the same thing with records and CDs. Streaming is insane to me. I’ll never do it.
Spartan04@reddit
Funny enough I'm not sure I spent any of my own money on cassettes. I had plenty of them when I was a young kid that my parents bought for me but I was pretty early to CDs (bought my first portable CD player in 5th grade, and early Sony Discman, using money I saved up for a while). After that I really only bought CDs. It's possible I bought a cassette or two prior to getting the CD player but I can't remember for sure.
The car I drove in high school and college had a tape deck but I'd mostly either listen to the radio or use a cassette adapter with my CD player for longer drives (later on used that same cassette adapter with a minidisc player and then my first iPod).
Idawooderd@reddit
In utero
Superunkown was my first CD purchase!!!
AMugOfPeppermintTea@reddit
In Utero was the first CD I ever got. Didn't buy it. My brother was upgrading his stereo and gave me his CD player (my first) so he gave me his copy of In Utero to start my CD collection because it turned out that I was way more into Nirvana than he was.
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
First was maybe STP - Core? I mostly copied tapes.
Last was Itchy & the Nits, this past May.
AMugOfPeppermintTea@reddit
I don't remember what the last cassette was but the first one I ever bought (that wasn't children's music though I don't know if I paid for those) was RCGP "Under the Bridge" Cassingle.
elkniodaphs@reddit
First: Data cassette for the Tandy.
Last: My Chartreux named Cassette.
KingCarnivore@reddit
First TLC, last I have no idea
TheLeathal13@reddit
First was definitely Motley Crue - Girls, Girls, Girls
Last one is less clear. Might have been Shake Your Moneymaker- The Black Crowes.
Ancient-Tax9717@reddit
Holy crap, I didn’t think about this till just now, but it might be the same for each. I bought EnVogue’s Funky Divas when I was in 4th grade. About a year ago I was at a record store that sold cassettes and out of nostalgia I bought Funky Divas and Paula Abdul’s Forever Your Girl.
quickblur@reddit
First- Ace of Base
Last- Hootie and the Blowfish
metmerc@reddit
The first cassette I received was Huey Lewis and the News, Fore. The first I bought were three at one time: Starship, Knee Deep in the Hoopla; Phil Collins, Face Value; and Bully Idol, Self Titled.
The last I bought (other than local bands) was probably Pearl Jam's Vitalogy.
worksnake@reddit
No way I remember the last cassette I bought, but the first was Lisa Loeb’s “Stay” cassingle.
DookieMcDookface@reddit
First that I bought with my own money was probably Michael Jackson’s Bad. Last might have been Depeche Mode’s Violator that I found at a thrift store during the pandemic.
freestewart@reddit
Pretty sure the first cassette I bought with my own money was U2 Rattle and Hum, and the last one was David Byrne Feelings. That last one sticks in my mind because it was 1997 and it had been years since I had bought a cassette, but we were in Jackson Wyoming on a road trip and I desperately wanted to listen to something new and all I had was a walkman and a bunch of mixtapes I had been listening to forever.
Slippery-Pete76@reddit
First was Def Leppard’s Hysteria. Don’t remember the last, but I got my first Discman in 1994, so it would have been around then.
BottleCurious1332@reddit
1st was Top Gun soundtrack. Last was RATM Evil Empire.
DadNotBro@reddit (OP)
I wore out my copy of the Top Gun soundtrack! My folks never bitched about it either cuz they loved it too. They did, however, LOATHE my RATM albums at full blast.
usernames_suck_ok@reddit
I can't believe people remember stuff like this...
DadNotBro@reddit (OP)
Oh I can’t tell you what I had for lunch yesterday. But shit like this I can pull out of the memory banks at will.
Weird_Squirrel_8382@reddit
First was "hey lover" by LL Cool J. Last was "keep the faith" by Faith Evans.
Stonk_Lord86@reddit
Blink on cassette means a deep late game engagement with CDs. Respect.
DadNotBro@reddit (OP)
So I actually was very early on CDs….in my personal vehicles. I drove wreckers back in 99-00. They all had tape decks. Since I spent most of my waking hours in those trucks, I started by tapes again. Pretty sure I had Enema on both tape and CD.
Adrasteia-One@reddit
First: Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience, Pearl Jam - Vs
Last: Type O Negative - October Rust
HorseWorking@reddit
I had plenty of cassettes but by the time I was actually buying stuff it was CDs
Fngrbngr79@reddit
Blame it on the rain single cassette
Middleage_dad@reddit
First was REM Out of Time.
Last was in about 2007- a single of Never Going to Give You Up, which I gave away as a runner up gift during a Lasagna cook-off content.
LeopardCoin@reddit
First one I bought myself is Meet the Beatles, last one is Freddie Mercury - Mr. Bad Guy, which I bought this year because I’m a huge Queen nerd and I collect all kinds of stuff from them, including cassettes.
bashturd@reddit
I can’t remember what the first would have been. I remember more about my little records than tapes. The last one I can actually remember buying was Ill Communication. The only reason I remember is because I got it on the way to a friends bday pool party. Some girl had a bikini malfunction and we all saw our first pair of non-mom tits.
noonesaidityet@reddit
Weird Al- Off The Deep End was probably the first I actually bought, cause I didn't have many cassettes that weren't dubbed. Tape trading was big at my school, so as soon as one person had Nirvana- Nevermind, everyone had it within a few days. Sometimes it was a copy of a copy, but they all eventually got around.
Feral_Sheep_@reddit
First was the soundtrack to Top Gun, and the last was Insomniac by Green Day. My first CDs were Tragic Kingdom and Mellon Collie.
5tealthNinjaWhattt@reddit
Bel Biv Devoe
instant_ramen_chef@reddit

gbyrd013@reddit
Def Leppard’s Hysteria was fist and last was Alice In Chains Jar Of Flies
Ok_Walk_5741@reddit
First i bought was either b-52s cosmic thing or skid row's first album. Can't remember which can't first. The last was probably an ani difranco bootleg from the sketchy store near my college campus circa 1996-7

Others i found in the trash or yard sale free piles.
Rural poverty lol

First was Def Leppard Hysteria and the last (which was also the first CD I owned) was The Bodyguard Soundtrack.
