We used to install mod chips in these so they could play pirated games. That transition was basically the difference between success and bricking a PlayStation and it was SO stressful.

I didn't even have a mod chip. I played pirated games by first inserting a legit PS1 game, then swapping in the pirated game during this load screen. It usually worked, until it eventually fucked up the disc drive, the lens or both.

I don’t totally remember but I think that only worked on the earlier generations of the PS1 and was fixed in later ones.
