I went to the same summer camp as Scott Bacula's daughter once and I got to meet him when he came to pick her up. I was a huge quantum leap fan, that was such an awesome coincidence
Loved this show when I was a kid and recently started watching it again, old man style on network TV. It’s on the GET TV which is basically the Walker Texas Ranger station except at 3 and 4pt, they play QL. I could not find it streaming anywhere besides the reboot on Netflix.
Ziggy was a sentient AI. In one episode Ziggy gets gender swapped into being female, and remarks to Sam, “Oh, what legs, if only you weren’t my FATHER!”
Goddamn I loved that show. I still remember Al being the one that leaped once while Sam was actually able to see home, and laughing as both of them went 'Ohhhhh boy' at the same time. Good times.
I WISH we could get a smartphone that looked like that. Id be on it like a teenager with a dependence on ChatGPT. Or really any teenager these days, I guess.
I assumed the handlink (“original smartphone”) that Al uses to communicate with Ziggy (computer) had a holographic user interface projected to Al that he could see in the imaging chamber, but to us (the viewer) and Sam the face of the handlink just appears as a translucent blocks.
Ziggy, the actual computer, exists at Project Quantum Leap in the New Mexico desert in 1999. In the episode “The Leap Back” the console for Ziggy is presented as a large glowing blue sphere with a sultry voice.

Did you tell him you loved him in Necessary Roughness?
I was a big QL fan and watched anything of his I could.
jdsmith575@reddit
I was trying to explain Necessary Roughness to my wife last night and couldn’t think of a single thing he’s done that she has seen.
Bindlestiff34@reddit
I take it she hasn’t seen Major League: Back to the Minors.
jdsmith575@reddit
That one didn’t cross my mine. I’ll ask.
Bindlestiff34@reddit
I HIGHLY doubt it. I barely saw it, it was on tv when I was a kid.

Meeting him is #1 on my bucket list

Then Dr Theopolis was the first wearable tech maybe?

Ok cool, I’ll give it a shot. I haven’t watched it

Not to be that guy, but...
JLP was rocking the iPad long before Al slapped Ziggy around.

replicaprops makes a really cool reproduction of this but it costs like $650
CmdrFortyTwo@reddit
I do slap my phone when it acts up and call it "Ziggy" at the same time.

they brought back the OG handlink in the new series, complete with original sounds. I wish they extended it to season 3.

I had all the Ziggy sounds on my Pocket PC Phone for the various UI sounds. I loved being a young tech geek.
I haven't had Star Trek sounds on my work PC for a few years now. :(

IIRC, that prop was referred to as the "Gummy Bear," according to one of Allison Pregler's awesome Quantum Leap videos.

They do actually. And it was just blinking lights. Didn’t make sense that Al was reading from it.

That’s enough nerding from me today.
