Is hat etiquette a thing anymore?

I was out for dinner with my wife tonight. It’s not a Michelin star restaurant by any means, but neither is it a Harvester or Wetherspoons. It’s a country club, with equestrian centre. The restaurant has oyster bar, wine lists, pastry chefs… so reasonably up market?
Three blokes walk in. They keep their baseball caps on for the duration of their meal. I remarked to my wife that I found this extremely rude. She wasn’t fussed either way.
It didn’t affect my evening, I just thought that they looked ridiculous, but isn’t it just good manners to remove your hat (a) indoors and (b) at the table? Or am I just out of touch now I’m in my 40s?
