Piggy bank maybe? Strange that we all associate that with the word save even though I dont think people give them to kids anymore. Related, perhaps a vault, safe or treasure chest?
I know this sounds crazy, but I was just building a UI and I was looking for a save icon. Nope. The new saves are empty hearts to fill hearts and the little bookmark.
I just zoomed in to the picture to ask my 11 yo daughter what the save icon was. She couldn't see the comment, just the save icon. After a bit of back and forth discussing that it was a save icon, she said it looked like a vending machine
Nah, us old fogies with our 1.44MB of DATA will be having the last laugh! Do these kids even realize how much space that is? That’s like a semester’s worth of Fortran code, a couple of shareware games downloaded from various BBSs, and still enough left for 1/2 of a 640x480 jpep.
In the process of settling down in a new house and I found my old PC games. I was opening it in my garage and pulled out 7 of the 5 inch floppies the game was on.
It was bittersweet feeling both old and having memories of installing those games and the process being so much a part of gaming that I loved.
PC gaming is seriously missing an important part of the experience. Probably why I still game far more on console. Give me a package and actual physical media to hold and shove into the drive.

Discussion topic, what is an adequate modern replacement for this icon?
I am struggling to come up with much. Maybe an icon commonly used in gaming for when a save happens?

Or a lifesaver?

The green ones are the best. ;)

Oh I meant the original lifesaver, like the round tube you throw to drowning people.

Yeah, I know. I was trying to be silly.

Only thing I can think of for modern computing is maybe an icon of an arrow pointing at a cloud.

I recall a post from like 10 years ago where some kid saw a floppy disk and said, "Cool, you 3-D printed the Save icon."

Someone needs to tell the kids that before ATMs you could make deposits to your bank account on soda machines.
Just really mess with them.
