Passenger view of the ERJ145 crash landing at Kolwezi

This video taken by a passenger onboard the ERJ145 as crash landed at Kolwezi. Praise the camerman! Yes, the video was a little shaky at times, but they kept their camera focused on the action surprisingly well given their aircraft was in the process of crashing.
In seriousness though, the video seems to show the ERJ in a stable approach to the runway. It then passes over the runway threshold, which looks freshly surfaced. It floats for several seconds as the tarmac ends and is replaced by a dirt, rock and rubble - clearly the section of runway under construction. It then touches down in or right at the end of this section before scraping on its belly down what seems to be another tarmac section.
So it seems likely the section of the runway under construction was somewhere in the middle of the runway rather than at one end. Perhaps the pilots new about this and tried to plant the aircraft down right at the start of the remaining 1500m LDA and missed, or they didn't know and realised too late with too little energy to avoid contacting the section under construction.
Subject9800@reddit
Good work by whoever was running the camera, though. lol
buffalostreaker@reddit
Also give us for not even single woman screaming. Top notch pre-death situational civility. 5 stars

Women! So useless.

Can’t fly with them, can’t fly without them.

Oh, don't worry, the passengers are later seen leaving the burning wreckage with their hands full of their luggage

Seems like women screaming when something slightly jarring happens is exclusive a US phenomenon.
Stoney3K@reddit
And they're only doing it because everybody in the movies and TV shows does it.
Derpindorf@reddit
No, some people are just screamers. People react differently to shock and trauma.
spazturtle@reddit
It is learnt behaviour, like making an 'ah-cho' noise when you sneeze. We know this because there are cultures where people don't do these things.
spironoWHACKtone@reddit
Definitely not, the only time I've ever experienced it is on flights within Europe, particularly southern and eastern Europe haha
deepstatelady@reddit
Half of the screams you're attributing to women are also very possibly men. Some don't have a terribly manly shocked and panicked sound, bro.
Newsdriver245@reddit
Was a charter with a delegation of mining officials, maybe they are just used to chaos.
slopit12@reddit (OP)
Almost feels like this was just another day in the office for them.
littlelowcougar@reddit
That would make for a good comedy skit. Different types of stereotypical people getting into an airplane crash and how they’d react.

Agreed.

Good point. 👍🏼
cschelz@reddit
Right? This guy is literally in a plane crash and his filming is steadier than like 95% of videos online.
R0guePlanet@reddit
At 2:44, I think the video includes a bit of the camera man and he is wearing a uniform with two stripes on the epaulettes.
Recoil42@reddit
Dead silent too. No "oh my god oh my god" "allah akbar" soundtrack. Someone buy the cameraperson a beer and give them a high five.

Well, this was just normal landing in Uganda, so…

BalzacTheGreat@reddit
I don't know what happened, but either that runway is very narrow or they were hugging the right side of it. Wild either way. Miracle nobody died based on the other footage.
n108bg@reddit
Were they even on a runway? It looked like it started then turned to dirt.
slopit12@reddit (OP)
If you look closely towards the end of the video, you can see the runway turns to tarmac again. So the part under construction was somewhere in the middle. For some reason they ended up touching down in that section. Apparently there was only 1500m available for landing after this part under construction. That's not a lot, even for a regional jet. Perhaps they were trying to plant it down right on the threshold of this section, but accidently caught the edge, shearing off the landing gear immediately.

I’ve seen it before in Oulu in Finland about 10 years ago. And Bristol, UK I’m almost certain about 15 years ago. In both cases the pilot came on PA to advise we’d have a short landing / aggressive braking

Welcome to the Congo
Blue_foot@reddit
Looking at Apple Maps which has a newer image than google, it seems they were building a new runway parallel to the old one.
And they landed on the short unfinished runway. With an X at the end.
slopit12@reddit (OP)
I see what you mean! The tower and terminal took quite close to the aircraft though, like it's landing on the nearest runway to them. It's definitely a possibility though. But then why would they have flown over a completed section then an unfinished section? It doesn't quite match the imagery if they were landing on the west-facing runway.
slopit12@reddit (OP)
Oh I see what you mean. But I don't tihnk so. If you watch the video after impact, you can see a taxiway leading directly to the terminal and tower. That's a lot closer than if they were landing on the new runway. But it's possible. The whole place looks like a big construction site!
SeeMarkFly@reddit
All the overhead luggage was saved.
slopit12@reddit (OP)
I guess they were very lucky they didn't collide with construction vehicles - as has happened in other similar crashes that did result in fatalities.
With no sudden deceleration, the aircraft reduced its energy gradually meaning the people inside were spared blunt force injuries. Those injuries would have had the secondary effect of impairing their evacuation - and with how quickly that fire spread, it could have easily then led to fatalities from smoke and fire.

AZNPickleballer@reddit
Wow miners brain thinking “This is way better than a mining accident.”
UpbeatAssumption5817@reddit
I think they were officials but I would hope they had a mining background at least.
Regardless I am assuming they knew each other which definitely helps the evac
slopit12@reddit (OP)
No fatalities and I haven't even heard any reported injuries. It seems like a reasonably well conducted evacuation (obviously with the usual hand-luggage issue...). It was relatively lightly loaded with only 26 passengers and of course it helps that the aircraft came to a stop in one piece and right side up. In a strange way, the lack of landing gear sort of helped too.
Grobby7411@reddit
how did the lack of landing gear help?
slopit12@reddit (OP)
It potentially reduced the likelihood of minor injuries (twisted angles, minor fractures) that result from evacuating an aircraft from a greater height, either through jumping to the ground or using evacuation slides (which the ERJ-145 does not have).

But my laptop!!!!!

Almost looks like a gear up landing.
slopit12@reddit (OP)
I mean, it essentially was. Potentially the gear sheared off immediately. You can hear on the video after the loud bang it seems to go quiet for a few seconds. That might have been the aircraft still flying a few feet in the air (now gearless) before the fuselage contacts the runway.

I think this went as well as crash landing can go. No fire, intact fuselage, no panic. Well done.
sizziano@reddit
There was a massive fire.
darkenthedoorway@reddit
I mean no fire inside the cabin, no fuel explosion until everyone is out.
CompassCoLo@reddit
There was absolutely a fire, if you look at photos of the wreck aftermath the entire cabin from the cockpit back is a pile of ash lol.
But the fire consumed the fuselage after the fact, and everyone got off safely. So in that spirit I wholly agree. About the best case scenario.
darkenthedoorway@reddit
I mean during the belly slide, fire does not penetrate the cabin until after passengers are evacuated. But you are right of course.

Definition of Praise the camera man.
chuckop@reddit
I don’t know the characteristics of this particular aircraft, but that’s some crazy flaps. A ton of drag and yet they are still very fast over the threshold and floating forever before slamming it on the ground.
TanMan166@reddit
My thoughts as well when I say this ....it was coming in wayyy to fast
Roger_Freedman_Phys@reddit
The airport elevation is 5007 feet, so the groundspeed should indeed have been higher than a sea level landing (https://acukwik.com/Airport-Info/FZQM). That being said, that was a lot of float.
GGCRX@reddit
I think the poster elsewhere in here was right - the runway was torn up and they were trying to touch down where the pavement started again but undershot it.
rui278@reddit
Ok, my runway has a gap, should I
a) turnaround and talk to the tower/divert to alternate airport b)wing it and try to nail the runway after the gap
🤣🤣🤣
GGCRX@reddit
Might be something CFIs should add to the discovery flight. " 'Fuckit, YOLO' is not an aviation term."
anxiousandsingle@reddit
I'm not a pilot but was thinking the same thing. Wtf
Ghost_of_Akina@reddit
You mean you don’t normally land at flaps 70?
Stoney3K@reddit
Yep. The 145 can go stupidly slow in landing configuration if you want to (meaning, almost sub-100kts) so I'm really puzzled why they've got all the flaps out and they're still coming in that fast.
Maybe they made the approach excessively shallow on purpose because they could see what was coming?
_Neoshade_@reddit
You’re suggesting that they anticipated a crash landing and chose not to go around / divert but instead came in hot because YOLO?
hairymonkeyinmyanus@reddit
Same. I’m not in the industry, bur I was wondering if he was recording it because he thought the flaps might be improper or weird or whatever
Chaxterium@reddit
I doubt that only because landing flaps are typically full extension. Many airliners don’t use full flaps on landing (but can and will when necessary) but it’s not uncommon to use full flap. So from a passenger’s perspective they would have no way of knowing if this setting is incorrect or not. In fact the only way one might know something is wrong is if the flaps aren’t extended enough.
Please forgive my nerdiness.
Stoney3K@reddit
If you know you've only got 1500 feet of runway available, you want to get rid of all of the speed you can get. Going for full flap would make sense but then why come in so ridiculously fast?
Chaxterium@reddit
Well this plane has no business being anywhere near a runway that’s only 1500 feet. I believe this runway was closer to 7,000.
But no idea why they appear to be coming in fast but keep in mind they may be perfectly on speed but with a screaming tailwind pushing them along. But that opens up a whole new set of questions.
Stoney3K@reddit
The runway was 7000 if it wasn't under construction.
There was only a small part of usable runway left.
And with a "screaming tailwind", you'd expect them to land in the other direction unless that's not possible with terrain?
Chaxterium@reddit
Yes absolutely. Which opens up a whole new set of questions.
stormdraggy@reddit
Not really. African airline gonna african airline.
buriedupsidedown@reddit
Yeah, the 145 doesn’t have leading edge slats which help in slowing down and not having this lawn dart landing attitude. It’s hard to tell if they’re at vref by just a video though.
PurpleCabbageMonkey@reddit
It seems to be way too fast. I have flown on a few 135s flights, and the approaching speed is always much lower. This 145 looks like, despite flaps all the way down, it was racing to get to the crash site. But what do I know, I only watched Top Gun a lot of times.
Scott2G@reddit

blixxadi@reddit
So it is not under construction. It is normally dirt and not paved. Only a section on the left looks paved or concrete.
MidsummerMidnight@reddit
Incorrect. The dirt we see in the video happens AFTER the piano keys. It did not land on the south dirt runway.
ewaters46@reddit
That kind of looks like an under construction runway with a narrower complete one closer to the terminal maybe?

dark_tower_@reddit
Whichever pilot landed that plane needs to have their license revoked. The approach was way too fast, and if you see how deep they went into the runway before touchdown just shows that they completely miscalculated the landing.
_Vello_@reddit
From my very limited flight training this looks like a very stable approach but came in a little low in the end, i have no idea what went wrong perhaps maybe didnt idle the throttle during flare or at the late end of the approach picked up speed?
Derpaderp222@reddit
Cameraman performed admirably, considering.

Another post said the airport is at around 5,000 feet, so thinner air, need more speed to stay aloft.
CPTMotrin@reddit
This. I thought the height above the ground and large amount of flaps from the start of the video gave me the impression the plane was hot and high from the get go. Awful long flare before touch down.

If you manage to stop at exactly the 1:55 mark, you can even see the X mark on the runway. And at around 1:54 you can see another one at the Piano 🎹 keys of the beginning of the runway.
So it appears they touched down on the part that was recently resurfaced and looked like it was usable and still closed (because they didn't notice the X markings) and then they ran into the part that was completely under construction and which was therefore only dirt and had no surface at all.
CPTMotrin@reddit
That “X” was way past the piano keys at 1:55. It should have been placed well before the piano keys. Then I see part of an X at 2:05. So maybe, that X was at the end of the usable portion of the shortened runway.
SoothedSnakePlant@reddit
If you look at the airport on satellite photos, they have two runways, one narrow scrappy looking one that's finished, and one that's under construction that's a lot wider and more modern looking.
I really wonder if they lined up for this one thinking the actual runway they were meant to use was the taxiway.
Lyuseefur@reddit
JFC. I thought I was imagining this and I replayed and missed it. Good catch. Well...clearly - I hate to say it - but it's really pilot error. Clearly marked as X...

Einveldi_@reddit
Honest question, is this even a crash? The aircraft is right way up the whole way, has no structural failure in the passenger area, and comes to a halt.
slopit12@reddit (OP)
Parts of the aircraft were strewn along the runway. It was on fire and then subsequently burnt down. I'd say, yes, it was a crash. I'd also classify this as different to a runway excursion where the aircraft was damaged due to departing the runway surface. This aircraft crashed into something that wasn't an available runway.
urEnzeder@reddit
Feel free to correct the following. I've seen reports that they overran the runway, but:
Looks like they were landing on runway 29 at Kolwezi. I'm assuming the video is not flipped and the control tower is visible out the right side. It appears that there is lot of construction occurring - new runway, aprons, etc.
The distance tool on Google Maps reports the runway length as \~6300 ft from each threshold marking.
Wikipedia reports \~7900 ft. Displaced thresholds?
We see the threshold marking at \~1:55.
We see the aiming point at \~2:00 - with landing zone markers in between.
If I extrapolate based on a hopefully slowing aircraft:
We see the asphalt end at \~2:05.
The impact happens at \~2:08. At roughly the midpoint of the runway? Into construction debris?
If they were, in fact, building a new runway, why disturb the old one before completion?
slopit12@reddit (OP)
At 2:30 you can see that the aircraft is skidding off to the side, but there looks to be runway remaining ahead of the aircraft. I assumed they were resurfacing the runway in sections. The tarmac and threshold marker paint that the aircraft flies over initially look very fresh. So my guess is they had completed those sections, but they were not open because of the section in the middle being worked on. Once the newer section was longer, they'd switch aircraft to landing on that section.
It'll probably all become clear soon. I think the cause looks quite simple. They landed where they shouldn't. The only remaining question is why.
urEnzeder@reddit
Yeah, now we wait for folks with more facts.
Not sure about the runway resurfacing. If they cut a \~6300' runway in halfThe runway after the aiming point (2:00 - 2:05) looks a bit shabby.
If they were resurfacing the runway, then maybe they should not have even attempted the landing. Even if they did manage to get it on the ground (using the displaced threshold?), the airport is at \~5000 ft, so the takeoff roll of the ERJ145 would be ...?
slopit12@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I'm not sure. Avherald states: "Kolwezi Airport features a runway 11/29 of 2410 meters/7900 feet length...However, the threshold of runway 29 was displaced by 1000 meters due to work in progress on the runway."
Hot and high, with only \~1400m available would seem to be pushing it for an ERJ145.
marrieditguy@reddit
Did the asphalt end or did the plan veer off to the left side?
urEnzeder@reddit
Not 100% sure, but it looks like a few seconds later (2:10 - 2:15) they are back on asphalt. They are probably no longer on the centerline though - understandably. Then they veer off around the 2:30 mark...
juggdish@reddit
Man, I’m in both r/fearofflying and this sub. I’m not sure which one makes me feel better about my legitimate fear, but here I am watching this. Maybe this example of no fatalities even during an extremely unusual event will help

Why is convention in African countries for the registration numbers to be painted so large on the top of the wings?

So if they fall off you can return them to their rightful owner? Japan write them on the wing quite large as well, plus the big red spot!
EagleEyezzzzz@reddit

slopit12@reddit (OP)
Well if your landing gear shears off, you'll know what to do. Think of it as a very real safety and evacuation demonstration.
Stoney3K@reddit
And in this case the E145 is one of the safest for the gear to shear off, because the engines are on the tail. So it will slide to a stop on its fuselage and wings.
slopit12@reddit (OP)
Good point. Plus the fire that started around the engines was further away from the cabin was blown rearward away from the cabin.

But come on over to /r/fearofflying. We’ll help you out!
Oxytropidoceras@reddit
If it makes you feel any better, these accidents aren't a recent thing, that's just a recency bias and the media overhyping airplane crashes because it brings in views. There's no indication we've deviated from the normal rate of accidents, except for that the rate of fatalities in incidents involving airliners has significantly decreased over the past 50ish years. Also worth noting is the type of plane. If you're on a larger aircraft (basically anything larger than a regional jet) the odds of you being in a fatal accident are significantly lower than winning the lottery
For example, in the US, 5 people have died in crashes with Boeing aircraft in the last 20 years, and one of those people was a bystander who was hit by a plane that overran the runway. Or in an airbus, not a single person has died in an Airbus in the US in the last 20 years. Or looking at it another way, there have been 29 fatal incidents involving commercial aircraft since 9/11. 7 were helicopters, 1 was a hot air balloon, and 11 of them involved propeller aircraft (4 of which were float planes/amphibious aircraft). So if you're on a jet, that already puts you down to 11 fatal crashes in the US since 9/11.
I understand the fear of flying, it's not something that you can really rationalize away, but it's not worth losing your job over. You're at far, far more risk driving to the office than you are taking one flight.
dzson117@reddit
Thx for the comment. I have my ticket so I am going to board the plane. Its BA btw, so I suppose a hop to london from europe isnt a huge risk.
We had an airshow here a couple of years ago and I bought a ticket for the Heliforce (MI-2) aerobatics flight. It was awesome, but almost shat my pants several times and suddenly turned religious mid-flight. I guess a commercial airliner will be a joyride to candy-mountain after that experience.
Oxytropidoceras@reddit
Dozens of such flights happen daily with 0 problems whatsoever. And British airways hasn't had a crash since 2008, and hasn't had a fatal crash since the 70s. You'll be in good hands and won't have any problems

Are you really basing the safety of whatever airline your flight is on compared to a regional jet operating in the DRC?
slopit12@reddit (OP)
Go look at FlightRadar24 for a couple of minutes and realise that every-single-one of those aircraft all around the world will reach their destination without any significant issue whatsoever.
dzson117@reddit
Yeah, I know right? I follow this sub, watched all the videos os 74 gear kelsey, I know its irrational fear.
Just always imagine getting roasted alive becuase some dumbfucks start taking their luggage after an emergency landing.
And since thats very unlikely to happen I came here to be roasted on reddit instead.

God damn. That looked like they stalled it onto the runway. That hit hard.
slopit12@reddit (OP)
Actually, I think they buttered the landing. Unfortunately, they buttered it right onto rocks and dirt. The hard it was the landing gear being sheared off.
Stoney3K@reddit
"Caught the 1 wire!"

Your sentence forgot to deploy a subject before landing
"The hard it was the landing gear being shared off."
Chaxterium@reddit
Oh maybe you’re right. Definitely an interesting one.

1:27 - what a place for a radio tower
iambackend@reddit
Maybe they were under the guide slope, and that’s why it looks so close?

Oh man. That tower is going to murder someone at night. I'm sure of it.

I hate when I am expecting the runway to be paved but it’s actually dirts and rocks instead.

Both paved to start, then not

is there a subreddit opposite of r/killthecameraman ? excluding portrait mode whoever recorded this did a amazing job, especially given the circumstances
fireandlifeincarnate@reddit
given it's filming through an aircraft window, portrait mode seems fine
Rebellion2297@reddit
Yeah, landscape mode would feel like a crime

I want to say "shitty pilots because they put the aircraft onto a closed runway that apparently has a rock garden in the middle" but you've gotta give them some credit for how they manage to keep the aircraft from going out of control after the gear collapses.
unscholarly_source@reddit
It's so fascinating that in this comment section, the camera man is praised, but in a different post, people are blasting the guy for recording in the comments. (I think they did a great job with the filming)
People are weird.
joeybalonee@reddit
Landing on a runway with construction in the middle is fucking wild.
I wonder if the gear clipped the lip of where the construction ended and the runway started
unclefire@reddit
I'm amazed that guy kept recording. It seemed like they landed long.
leoniddit@reddit
Very close resemblance to landing at ATH with Ryanair a few days ago /s

I am quite impressed by the calm of the passengers, and the cameraman!
clrlmiller@reddit
Maybe it's me, but I never heard the landing gear move to deploy, while the pilot(s) seem to be hovering the aircraft, waiting for the wheels to contact the runway, which they never did. Then suddenly the engine nacelles make contact and shit gets serious quickly. I think the camera guy and everyone on board were quite calm and not expecting anything special, until the engines hit the ground instead of rubber tires.
NoobToobinStinkMitt@reddit
Man gives some perspective when you fly over your beautiful city at landing. Then you see this, which looks war torn, and then runways even worse.
trustmeimalobbyist@reddit
I can’t believe how many camera angles we are getting of crashes these days
