Were you “MySpace-Famous”? (Somewhat)

Like I wasn’t famous famous. But I did have a following. I had the black and white grainy picture with the emo har swept across my face. And every blog I posted went to like, top 5. I was recognized in public a few times. My wife found it all VERY annoying.
camarhyn@reddit
No but I did break the code on my MySpace so badly their tech team had a hard time fixing it.
MartialBob@reddit
Nope. I remember creating a profile that was very 2005 me. I got a total of 5 Myspace "friends" on there. I did this apparently weird thing of trying to communicate with them and no one responded. I basically ducked out of Myspace after that.
ailish@reddit
Not even a little bit.
kittensbabette@reddit
No...but I went into a sex store once and the guy working pulled out some photos of me he got off myspace that he like, added fairy wings to...so there's that.
jachildress25@reddit
That’s exactly the stereotype I had of MySpace. I was just out of college when I was first able to get a Facebook account, and like 98% of people I knew had Facebook compared to MySpace. In my early 20s it really did seem like MySpace was full of serial killers and pedos.

THATS TERRIFYING
Mattimvs@reddit
I've had a wild an interesting life but 'my-space-famous' is a box left unchecked
muhredditone@reddit
You're just two wild and crazy guys.
Holmes221bBSt@reddit
Totally! The guy who owned it, Tom, was like my number one friend
JeffTS@reddit
I was friends with this famous dude named Tom!
osddelerious@reddit
When did MySpace die? Some people here are talking about it from 2007, but wasn’t that well into Facebook time?
_sonidero_@reddit
You had to have an .edu email to join fb...
osddelerious@reddit
Oh, I didn’t remember that. I think it must have allowed people with Canadian university emails to join too bec my email wasn’t .edu

I was somewhat Livejournal famous. By the time MySpace came around, I couldn’t really deal with the weirdos that even mild internet fame brings.
cmajka8@reddit
What is this LiveJournal you speak of? Never heard of it
sweetbirthdaybaby333@reddit
It was an early blogging site that eventually got taken over by Russians.
mysocalledmayhem@reddit
Do you receive the yearly email honoring the date you joined LJ?
I always find it kinda precious
sweetbirthdaybaby333@reddit
Lol, yes I do. And I was an Early Adopter, so yeah, I've gotten a "happy 25 years!" email. YIKES!
Nocturnal-Neurotic@reddit
I miss LJ!
Barnitch@reddit
No, I was not MySpace famous, but I’m very nostalgic for that point in time. People really put thought into their “About Me” and you could get a sense of their personality and the type of person they were. Even celebrities, especially B/C-list or lower. It was really them posting and commenting, uploading pictures from their digital cameras. I used to love going down MySpace rabbit holes looking up Playboy models and people like that and reading what they’re into and connecting the dots of celebrity friend groups. Sometimes I’ll Google old MySpace profiles just because. It sounds kind of strange, but looking at screenshots of old Myaspsce pages brings up memories you’ve forgotten.
Lucky_Louch@reddit
a bit. My wife and I were in a hip hop R&B group and Myspace really helped get us noticed and book shows. A couple of our songs got a few hundred thousand downloads which felt pretty good.
idkmybfftiggz@reddit
I was MySpace and Livejournal famous and it sucked. I was in a relationship with a guitar player in a well known pop punk/emo band that was on the warped tour circuit and people used to steal our pictures and make “fanfic” about us. It made me feel very awkward. I often think about how if I would’ve been less insecure at the time, I would have likely had a whole different life trajectory.
alien-1001@reddit
Was not Myspace famous, but I met my husband on Myspace. I was in Canada and him in California. I took a greyhound over and now we have five kids.
Smolshy@reddit
I also met my husband on MySpace!
Ohfuscia@reddit
My best friend also met her husband on MySpace.
stations-creation@reddit
No but I realized I had gotten broken up with because they took me off their top 8 :/. Someone must have told me because I would’ve been at the Internet cafe and immediately took them off mine if I saw it myself, but I distinctly remember going to work on my day off to ask the manager if I could use the Internet to remove him off mine and my teddy bear boss was like OMG YES HURRY!
Sea2Chi@reddit
Our cat had more friends than I did.
In college I'd photoshop it into various pictures and post them.
One time I ran into someone at a party who I recognized had friended my cat and I approached them to say hi. It turns out they just liked the cat, not me.

Never did MySpace, but this was the greatest MySpace story ever told.

I jumped into the alt-modeling world (not pr0n but def showing skin) of the early aughts (2003-2008), and had some success! It’s been really fascinating to see the evolution over the years and how that has manifested in websites like On1yFans. The main difference is the creators have “control” as opposed to the site owners. It’s a fascinating shift in “power” and autonomy.
ReferToMeAsDonald@reddit (OP)
Sounds like fun! I had a lot of alt-model type friends. Two were like, local in-person friends and they both have since passed away from drugs. Glad you made it through!
mysocalledmayhem@reddit
I’m glad that my experience was unsullied by drugs, for the most part.
I do think I was more impressionable in the “hey plz validate me about how I look” kinda way than in being impressionable on substance use. Thank GAWD, right? I feel very fortunate that I had good experiences but I, too, know several who passed from ODs or suicides. It’s a mixed bag looking back at it now.
ReferToMeAsDonald@reddit (OP)
Never realized how close I was to dying. I made some risky choices back then lol
_sonidero_@reddit
I only used Tomspace for listening to and promoting underground Rap, Noise and Electronic music and was "friends" with lots of artists that used it to show their work... I was able to get lots of my favorite bands play shows in Austin and I was famous for being that guy when they showed up to play... Lots of free merch and parties and "V.I.P." status just for posting their songs and gigs on my page... Good times...
On a side note one of my roommates at the time was a Tomspace gigolo but I never saw the same girls twice because he was catfishing... He had an awesome shirt later that said "Myspace Ruined My Life"...
Ohfuscia@reddit
I was a top friend on a local radio host’s MySpace. RIP Neil Rogers
turbodonuts@reddit
I met my husband on MySpace, so it’s forever my favorite.
Vox_Mortem@reddit
No, but I was famous in The Sims community, which I thought was weird. I ran a very successful forum and knew all the big content creators. EA invited me to an event at their headquarters in the bay area. It was always weird when I would message people and they would be like omg, I am so scared to talk to you! You are so cool!
Girl, I made virtual barbie doll clothes on the internet. I am not someone cool.
DoctorFenix@reddit
No but I was known around music message board circles.
People would sign up to the places I frequented just to come argue with me because they heard about me elsewhere. 😂
It was ridiculous times in the message board era.
Lindsey-905@reddit
I was Open Diary famous. Most popular diary for about 5 years. Only social media I have ever used on a personal level (outside of Reddit) and it was all anonymous. Exactly the way I wanted it to be.
I_AM_DEATH-INCARNATE@reddit
Not trying to brag, But Travie McCoy was in my top 8. I wasn't in his, but we were Myspace friends.
ReferToMeAsDonald@reddit (OP)
Fuck yeah!
ThisIsADaydream@reddit
Nice! Lol
badteach248@reddit
I was a bit. I was a MySpace rapper, and that following actually turned out for real life shows. I was doing open mics at coffee shops, and I'll never forget a group of 10 or so random people actually showed up. The coffeeshop booked me for a (badly) paid show. I wasn't actually famous, but I was doing shows every weekend, and even got to tour in 07.

The dream!
bdm6985@reddit
I was “Facebook famous” in the loosest definition of the word “famous.” Early in the Facebook days, I created an alternate account as my college’s mascot, and had tens of thousands of friends, and even other college mascots reaching out to this account asking for cheerleading advice.
ReferToMeAsDonald@reddit (OP)
Nice!
g3ckoNJ@reddit
I was on MySpace early on so I was in people's top 8 before you could choose them.
nights_noon_time@reddit
I was a little bit LiveJournal famous.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I let the myspace fad pass me buy. Apparently that's where all the fun was. 😂
DURKA_SQUAD@reddit
When I first signed up, I was randomly chosen to be featured in the "People you should know". I got so many messages and random friend requests. it was not enjoyable
Intelligent-Camera90@reddit
Naw, I think my biggest claim to fame is that I was in college with Shawn Fanning (Napster).
LLemon_Pepper@reddit
Hey me too! Did you live on campus? I was at Rubinstein.
Intelligent-Camera90@reddit
Yup! 319 Huntington, then St Stephen Street. My boyfriend was in Kerr Hall (before it blew up) and then the new West Village.
Turbojelly@reddit
My mate was myspace code famous. Ie he fpund the most interesting pieces of code to customise his profile until it looked so unique you had to check the url to make sure you were still on myspace.
Allaplgy@reddit
Only because I was actually locally famous within a certain scene.
lifeat24fps@reddit
I built a following for my horror interview website on MySpace and we ran that site for about 10 years. The traffic we got from MySpace got us great ad rates, back when that was a real thing, and paid for us to travel around to horror conventions, and back and forth from NY and LA, collecting interviews in person.
Verbull710@reddit
no but i had a fish you could feed named Venkman and also this picture
