The Final Countdown is not at all how I remembered it.

I think I saw the movie a couple times on basic cable, maybe? Like when I was 6 or so? Anyway, I've remembered it as an over the top, pro-US military, revisionist wet dream where a modern US aircraft carrier goes back in time and mops the floor with the Japanese fleet attacking Pearl Harbor.

I just re-watched the movie, and wow, is my memory wrong. I've been telling people for years about this hilariously hokey movie that re-writes a war we won to have us win even harder, but it turns out that I have been describing a movie that exists only in my head.

The actual movie is half a pointless meander through a time travel narrative, and half an ad for the US navy. On top of that, it actually predates the Europe song, and the song is not in the movie at all. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

The movie in my head was vastly superior to the real thing, and I wish I'd never revisited the actual flick. Ima go watch Robocop to remind myself that American cinematic greatness is real.
