somethin about these look amazing I would love the dry sand texture of this
Beneficial_Pickle288@reddit
I don't know what kind of air fryer you are using, they do not need oil.
Psianth@reddit
Homemade ones do. Frozen ones don’t because they’re already fried, so there’s already oil on them
amathysteightyseven@reddit
Stupid question maybe. But if you were doing handmade ones, where do you put the oil? Just in the bottom of the basket? On the tray thing?
Emm_withoutha_L-88@reddit
You'd fry them first
Or just pack a shit ton of harder oil on them I guess. But they aren't going to cook right right oil
Fat isn't the devil
kenzie42109@reddit
Whats even the point of air frying them if youve already gone through the effort to actually fry them?
Cosmere_Worldbringer@reddit
No, but the reason I make them at home is because I can control the calorie content to fit my macros better. Fat isn’t inherently bad but it contributes so much to calories and it’s relatively easy to control.
aliie_627@reddit
I spritz oil on my fries when I put them in the air fryer so probably the same for chicken
Appropriate_Quote102@reddit
You'll pour the oil into a paper plate and keep outside until noon. No the oil goes on the fucking chicken.
Psianth@reddit
Like u/CrzyScrySpkyHilrius said you could use a spray on oil, like pam, or oil in your own spray bottle, but frankly I just wouldn't do them in a air fryer at all. An air fryer is a tiny convection oven, that's all it is. If you wouldn't normally put a thing in the oven, then just don't use the air fryer.
KHSebastian@reddit
If I were going to do this (and I've never done it, so I might be wrong) I assume the way I'd do it is to make the nuggets, freeze them raw, then I'd put them in a bag, pour some oil in the bag, shake them so they're coated evenly, then air fry.
CrzyScrySpkyHilrius@reddit
I would use a spray oil sparingly. You actually don’t need a lot for this to work great
SpicyWokHei@reddit
I always make home made chicken tenders/strips/nuggets in my air fryer without oil. Pre heat air fryer, dip chicken in beaten egg, coat in seasoned breadcrumbs, and put in the air fryer. 380 for 5-6 mins a side, checking with thermometer.
Am I missing something??
Schweather3@reddit
This is what I do to make tenders. They come out fine.
mirfifu@reddit
I think most people are saying using breadcrumbs is the way to go, and if you only cover in egg and flour it won’t work
J3acon@reddit
I've never made an air fryer at home...
Psianth@reddit
If you can't make an air fryer at home, store bought is fine
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
These were self made marinated chicken breast just heavily dipped into flour, they do need it, storebought chicken nuggets dont cuz the breading is already oily
SpicyWokHei@reddit
Flour is the mistake. I use my air fryer for 99% of my cooking. Use bread crumbs.
Sorry_Challenge3507@reddit
It cooks raw chicken wings perfectly, they taste just like they came out of a real fryer. Just dont coat them with any kind of breading.
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
Yes well, wings are fatty
EM05L1C3@reddit
I think “don’t coat them with breading” was the point of their statement.
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
Well yeah but you can as long as you add a little cooking fat
AltForFriendPC@reddit
So wings are fatty, but you coat them with breading, but that's okay because you can just coat the breading with more fat
EM05L1C3@reddit
Thank you I wasn’t gonna be the one to say it
ThisMuffinIsAwesome@reddit
They meant in context of the picture Mr Snarky:
Sorry_Challenge: Wings are fine without coating. OP: Wings are fatty EM05L1C3: Don't bread them is the point (that your white meat nugget dish has failed) OP: You can (bread white meat), just have to add a little cooking fat.
Tyrrox@reddit
Air fryer =! Deep fryer
This is the confusion. It doesn't fry.
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
Yes i got tricked by the name at first, now i know, tbh still the best appliance i ever got, just wish it was wider so i could do pizza inside
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
An air fryer is basically a small oven. You can use a normal oven for a pizza or anything larger than the air fryer
I do love my air fryer though. I live alone, so cooking food in my air fryer is fine for my portion size and it uses less electricity than my oven. Chicken breast are exceptionally good in an air fryer in my opinion. Usually for my dinner I just mix a bunch of different vegetables and protein and dump it in the air fryer. It tells me when it’s done or need a shake, so I don’t have to keep track of the time.
I’m mentally ill sadly and don’t have a lot of energy, but I started cooking a lot more when I got my air fryer even though it’s the same in an oven. I think is the fact that, as I said above, I dump it in the air fryer and it tells me when it’s done, it’s a huge help.
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
My main thing is i can heat up my ninja in the time it takes me to walk downstairs and grab a bag of frozen fries
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
I don’t even preheat my air fryer lol
My air fryer isn’t from ninja, but I’m considering one once my current one retires. The ninja crispi looks nice for smaller things, again, I basically just make a “one pot” dish in my air fryer anyways. Bigger things and dishes for quests goes into the normal oven
But it would be nice to have an air fryer with two baskets for when I make things with different cooking time
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
I was considering typhur ones cuz they are wide and relatively short, so you can actually cook pizza or a big ass bowl of chicken nuggets in it, its a pain in the ninja and i literally never used the extra space provided by having a taller basket
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
Hm, again I just use my oven for pizzas, and I have definitely made bigger baskets of nuggets in mine, I don’t care about them touching each other or having air to three sides, I just shake it a few extra times. But I have never tried making my own nuggets, it’s probably different with them.
My air fryer can contain up to 5L
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
Thats what i do too, but id be hella more motivated to cook stuff if i didnt have to preheat the oven every time
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
Heh maybe I’m lazy but I rarely preheat my oven either. I just cook stuff for 5-10 minutes more
Except if I’m baking a cake or cookies or something where we’re talking about minutes, but not for stuff like a pizza, chicken or lasagna I rarely do it. For frozen pizzas when I’m tired, I just sit down facing my oven with my back against the other side (my kitchen is narrow) and watch until the cheese looks perfect. I’m usually also on my phone scrolling reddit when I do that
And I really regret I don’t have a frozen pizzas for today because could have definitely used it lol
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
I preheat a steel for frozen pizza cuz i desire that crispy bottom
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
That’s fair
oracle989@reddit
Yeah it's not a fryer,. it's just a countertop convection oven. I hate the name.
ThisMuffinIsAwesome@reddit
The problem with the picture isn't the breading itself, it's that the coating is dry as hell for white meat. You absolutely can for dark meat like wings and it will turn out fine, because the fat and juices seeps out much more to make the flour coating into an actual batter.
ThisMuffinIsAwesome@reddit
People don't realise that an air fryer is just an appliance - whether to add oil or not depends on whatever the fk you're cooking, as it always has.
MY-SECRET-REDDIT@reddit
Some people think theyre magic.
My friend bought one and cooked some beef patties on them by simply pressing the beef patty button... didnt turn out great.
Honestly all those buttons are so stupid.
its10pm@reddit
So, like the popcorn button on microwaves.
Ugly_Slut-Wannabe@reddit
Hey, on some fancier microwaves, the popcorn button is actually useful.
MrDTD@reddit
They have a microphone that stops cooking once there are a few seconds between pops, it's really neat.
MY-SECRET-REDDIT@reddit
Yeah you gotta have sensors or input for it to work.
My counter top oven has a temp probe and it'll shut off after it cooks things.
Problem is I somehow rubbed off the (aluminum) anti rust coating and it starting to rust...
Dunstund_CHeks_IN@reddit
CurrentBig3930@reddit
right? i’ve been using mine without oil and it still comes out great
OvechknFiresHeScores@reddit
You do if you’re coating them in flour
Delicious_Breath_987@reddit
right? i was shocked when i realized you can get crispy without it
HeavyRedditGuy@reddit
"Those are stones, Luigi! You didn't make them.
KDBA@reddit
An air fryer is just a small convection oven. The name is terrible.
nyarlatomega@reddit
I mean, an air fryer despite the name does not fry, it's still an oven (with the fan always on), you should treat it as such...
gawdpuppy@reddit
toss em in bbq, no one will notice lol
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
This was a long timr ago but i believe thats what i did xd, still they were like eating badly made chicken jerky
TBNRgreg@reddit
if you told me this was a new weed strain some mad scientist invented that has 110% THC i'd believe you
cheesy-chocolate@reddit
Flour coating doesn’t really cook well in the air fryer unless you cover the entire thing with oil. Maybe try breadcrumbs next time and cook with slightly lower temp but for longer to avoid burning them. Also, try not to overcrowd when cooking or the air won’t circulate properly
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
Yeah i already figured that out, id post my next batch but it was not shitty food anymore
External-Listen-3398@reddit
and for dessert, puddingstone.
HDpotato@reddit
products specifically made for the airfryer will usually have oil already in the breading specifically for this reason
BriefBed4770@reddit
Thanks for the misinformation.
geebo_schmeebo@reddit
your weclome
Palanki96@reddit
Just in case you are not trolling, oil wouldn't have saved those either
Air fryers are a scam but if you are hellbent you should get one of those oil coating spritzy things
Psianth@reddit
I'm gonna take a guess and say that you're probably from the UK. Here's the thing, in the US, almost NONE of our ovens are convection ovens. They have no fans. So, if my guess is right, then for you the only benefit is that they use somewhat less power to do the job for small meals, but for many of us in the US, they're our only choice for a convection oven.
Palanki96@reddit
Not UK and not a fan of fan assisted ovens either, they would dry out everything i usually bake
But if your problems are real you could just get one of small ovens you can put on a counter. Same budget and actually designed for baking stuff
Psianth@reddit
>you could just get one of small ovens you can put on a counter. Same budget and actually designed for baking stuff
I... that's a fucking air fryer! That's exactly what it is!
Palanki96@reddit
No? They are very different things?? Try baking baguettes in a fucking air fryer
Psianth@reddit
I mean maybe you're talking about a toaster oven? But if I already have one oven without a fan why do I want another one?
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
I can literally post a picture, from the same batch, that i added a light coating to, and they came out crispy brown in 8 minutes
irlronan@reddit
rip to all the people who are discovering that an air fryer isn't magic. i once put some frozen churros (intended to be deep fried) in the air fryer to a similar result. we live and we learn
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
I feel like i did this before in a air fryer and it came out okay, but i did do a little oil spray on top. Though anything that needs to be fried and goes into a air fryer tends to puff upna little
bootycuddles@reddit
I did this once. Same outcome, too.
Dork31@reddit
I have never used an "air fryer," but the fact that you are "frying" with hot air is what hot air popcorn poppers do. I think air fryers are nothing more than rejiggered hot air popcorn devices.
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
Its a fan oven
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
Or nconvection, dont remember which one
Dork31@reddit
I guess - IDK? Thanks for your reply.
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
They’re correct, an air fryer is just a mini convection oven
I love mine though
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
Yes it’s basically just a mini convection oven
Rndysasqatch@reddit
Lol I thought these were popcorn pieces covered in white chocolate for a second. That's pretty funny. Hope they came out better the next time
Recent-Wasabi-6280@reddit
Nah nah nah, those nuggets definitely had no oil in em. But even then I air fried mine and never once looked like protein rockazoids
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
I tried the same bunch next day with a small oil coating and they turned out great
Ok-Amphibian-7941@reddit
right? some people just dont get how amazing they are without oil
ArDee0815@reddit
Glad to hear it. I‘ve yet to make fresh nuggies, I always put in the store bought ones.
Recent-Wasabi-6280@reddit
It is so weird, I’m ANGRY at your bizarre adventures of protein rocks
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
Its cuz these were just flouered probably
slugfive@reddit
Also you probably didn’t use thigh or fatty meat
Azrioael@reddit
How bro 😭
rosesinyourarea@reddit
You don't need oil...
Medical_Sun1453@reddit
Looks like barbecued rocks
SubtleLure@reddit
Lol, mate, your nuggets look like charcoal briquettes!
Few_Chemical3029@reddit
Airfrying needs oil???
Baroa@reddit
there is a type of convenience food that really needs oil to work because of a different kind of coating, otherwise it will just dry out completely except for the few spots where juices flow out, those will get soggy. its kinda weird when you see it the first time, i think its a special type of coating after the breading.
Spicexodi@reddit (OP)
If you put anything dry in a airfryer its just gonna go even dryer, so unless what you are cooking has its own fat, yes
reddit_understoodit@reddit
that is shitty
