The 90s were a backlash to the 80s. The 80s was considered excessive, materialistic, corny, fake, maudlin and corporate. 90s youth wanted angst, authenticity, cynicism, minimalism, grittiness and edginess.
I mean, things weren’t GOOD in the 90s. It’s just that it feels like sunshine and rainbows compared to today because socio-politically it still felt like we were taking steps forward… it might have been performative most of the time, but most people still were in on the agreement to at least pretend that bad things were bad.
Idk I was a young teen then so I wasn’t angry but the musicians were adults and the world was all fucked up in the 90s. It’s worse now in many ways but crime & poverty were reallll bad in the states in the 90s.
That’s the year I think of when someone says “90’s.” It’s unfortunate that the Y2K part of the decade seems to be the narrative for many. I think the younger millennials drive this idea.
I have all four of the CDs in the clip in a CD binder in my car because my 2020 Tahoe still has a CD player and I use it. Not as often as I use YouTube music but I still do listen to CD sometimes.

What were we even so mad at back then? Now it seems like such a simpler time…

This looks like the playlist my local rock station STILL plays. 90s and more, they say. That more part keeps getting larger.
