Just a reminder: check your state's unclaimed property website.

We're all old enough to have accumulated stuff in there, and finding your name feels a lot like being a kid on Christmas again. š
prix03gt@reddit
Dam you for sending me down this very lucrative rabbit hole...
SwimmingHand4727@reddit
A friend of my sisters looked up our last name, and ound I had 2k in property tax refund from when I moved!š
mndza@reddit
Thank you! I had 4 of them and several family members have a BUNCH
Internal_Praline_658@reddit
So, just found my name linked to a house I sold in 2016. Anybody know what it might be?
stormer1_1@reddit
Yeah, if you have paper documents proving it belongs to you cackles in ADHD
graveybrains@reddit (OP)
You just have to prove you're you
PersianCatLover419@reddit
Thanks for the reminder.
Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit
I've got $50 in Virginia from a savings account I forgot about when we moved!
ObjectiveFlatworm645@reddit
THANK YOU!!! I just got like 600 bux! I've had a bunch of jobs and moved a lot!
Important_silence@reddit
I found money in two states. Thank you for the reminder!
After_Preference_885@reddit
I have some unclaimed property but it requires a notary to get back so it's just sitting there still
teenytinytexas@reddit
Banks have notaries and they'll do it for free
Blackbird136@reddit
Your bank will have a notary.
Source: am a notary at the bank where I work. š Along with three of my five coworkers.
Bad-Moon-Rising@reddit
Most UPS and FedEx retail store locations have a notary on staff. Your bank should also have one.
quintk@reddit
Notaries should be pretty easy to find. Check your public library for example: ours has notaries on staff. Or even just ask around wherever you work. I work with a few notaries. They didnāt become notaries as part of their current job, but for whatever reason they first became notaries, they maintain the certification or registration or whatever it is.Ā
PrincessSarahHippo@reddit
Well shit. I searched because I was bored. Found a 30 year old paycheck. I'll take it.
lifeat24fps@reddit
I got a $25 copay that I was double billed for back last year.
bgva@reddit
I've looked before...at most it was like $5 (sigh).
carlitospig@reddit
Oh yah, I forgot about that. Iāve only ever had one check waiting for me but it was still cool. :)
SpotTheCat1980@reddit
Just found $40k of unclaimed property for my deceased father in law a few weeks ago. And $300 under my name. Always check regularly and remind your family too!
YogurtclosetDull2380@reddit
Cash, cars... What kind of property is the state holding on to for us?
bug1402@reddit
Cash....have you ever gotten a check from a company abd it says "valid for 90 days" on it? Well if you don't cash the check, at some point they turning over to the state and say "this money belongs to MrX and here is the info (address, send, whatever) that we have for them."
You go to your states site and search your name, and if you find it, you fill out a form. Sometimes they want you to prove you did business with whoever or you have to sign an affidavit that you are entitled to it. But some times it's a decent chunk of change and is worth it.
persimmon9847@reddit
Yep, two checks from 15+ years ago ... total of $42! But hey it was my money and I could buy, like, 4 bananas.
scmillshin@reddit
YogurtclosetDull2380@reddit
I just finished a nationwide search and someone in Wichita owes me less than $100. Imma let them keep it
wrldruler21@reddit
My wife's deceased father and grandfather have funds in there. My state website won't tell me how much.
But dealing with their funds would require dealing with Probate courts and/or family that we haven't spoke to in 10 years.
It would take a ton, ton of money to make it worth opening that can of worms.
SpotTheCat1980@reddit
My mother in law already filed a claim for the $40k and it wasnāt that big of an ordeal. She already had the documentation they wanted. Now weāre just waiting to hear back.
bug1402@reddit
So...not neccesarily. At least, not in my state. There are some extra steps for deceased people but my sister did it with my mom and then told me they only gave her half and I have to go file separately for my half. I would have had no clue she did it if she didn't tell me.
ElleAnn42@reddit
Check for your parents and grandparent, too, even if they are deceased. Itās really common for funds to be owed to estates.
Blackbird136@reddit
Question about this. Iāve looked before and just looked again.
Iāve got a pretty common name. I found 3 things that could possibly be mine. Others under my name listed cities Iāve never lived in, but these 3 say ācity unreported.ā Thereās also no info about what company the money is from.
I went ahead and made the claim because itās very possible they are mine. With very limited info, itās impossible to tell. But if they arenāt, am I in some kind of trouble? š
graveybrains@reddit (OP)
As long as you don't lie about anything in the forms
Blackbird136@reddit
I received a form in my email after selecting my potential claims. All it asks for is my name and address, my signature, and copies of my ID and social security card. (Yes itās going to a legit state agency so itās not a scam haha. I used to work for the state.)
So Iām not sure what someone could even lie about? It doesnāt ask about former dealings with whatever companies the claims are with. Doesnāt even name them.
noonesaidityet@reddit
Never thought that was a real thing, just found like half my family have listings.
prosequare@reddit
Dang, I had four claims in there- three under $250, one over $250. Probably the result of being too tired or depressed to drive an hour to the bank with a small check. Thanks for the heads up.
Glittering-Show-5521@reddit
Thanks for this. Some of it was stuff I didn't even know was there. I always just assumed that once things went to the state, there was no reclaiming.
garden__gate@reddit
I got $3,000 last year! I was unemployed at the time so it made a big difference.

I won $600 of my own money a few months ago.

Lil_Brown_Bat@reddit
Not just the state you live in now, but every state you've ever lived in.
jazzminarino@reddit
Legit. I haven't lived in Pennsylvania for fifteen years and on a lark, thought I'd check. Turns out it was an itty bitty check that I didn't cash right out of college circa 2006.
CorgiMonsoon@reddit
I just got like $90 earlier this year that Missouri had in my name. I was there in KC from 2004-2007 for grad school, so I assume it was related to that time, but not sure what it might have been
jazzminarino@reddit
That is part of the problem. Mine have come from the state with just a dollar amount. I want to know where and why!!
CunnyMaggots@reddit
My grandmother who had been dead for a decade had $1.26 in there from her bank... lol.
kid_entropy@reddit
They showed I had 8 dollars coming to me that was WAY more trouble than it was worth to get.
withbellson@reddit
My dad had a settlement from a car insurance company sitting there for years. He thought he didnāt deserve the money (???) so he left the check uncashed.
I looked into getting ahold of it after he died but I think I needed a death certificate and a notarization so that $150 is probably still sitting in the state coffers.
kathatter75@reddit
Thereās some money sitting out there in my grandfatherās name. Same kind of situation where my dad and his brothers donāt have the paperwork for all of the hoops they want to make them jump through to get such a small amount of money.
withbellson@reddit
I just checked the CA unclaimed property website and my dad's money isn't there anymore (maybe my mom claimed it) but I see my great-uncle has some unclaimed property from a safe deposit box in Michigan. Well, that's gonna sit there for a long time...
kathatter75@reddit
I just checked the CA site, and Iām getting a whole $2.46!
Thereās some stuff with my name thatās actually from my ex-FIL. I wouldnāt have any of the paperwork for it, so thatās for my ex to claim.
Lazy_Mood_4080@reddit
Found my dad, and my (deceased) grandfather. Huh. Kinda cool. I'll let my dad know.
justpassingby_thanks@reddit
My ex wife has something under $100..... Someone should really tell her......
ErnieBochII@reddit
Looks like my state is holding a well Fargo cashier check for āover $100ā for me.
Gimme gimme
GasStationChicken-@reddit
I have a couple hundred bucks from an old bank account I used to have about 15 years and many moves ago. I canāt claim it beacuse they want proof of residency for the address on file and I have absolutely nothing left with that information.
Proud_Midnight7096@reddit
I have gotten back money before. Thanks for the reminder
unlovelyladybartleby@reddit
Canadian Xennials, check that "uncashed cheques" tab on your CRA account
igotcrabsinthebucket@reddit
Bank of Canada also has an unclaimed bank account search tool on their site for unclaimed cash
ailish@reddit
I check once in a while and have never found anything in my name.
dunnkw@reddit
Somebody posted a link to my Stateās unclaimed property website on my townās subreddit. I thought the link looked like a scam so I googled it myself. Took me to the same place and found two separate unclaimed amounts. I filed the claim, took me 5 minutes and had two checks in the mail from the state in less than a week.
ethnicvegetable@reddit
I got a whole ass mortgage payment it was glorious
limelight022@reddit
$95 coming my way! Thanks!
bounceswoosh@reddit
I found something like $100 (I suspect some of the found money is duplicates, ie my late husband + me showing up twice, but still.
There was $4.95 more that would require even more paperwork, and hounding his mother for proof of relationship or something. Hard pass on harassing her for that.
TheLakeWitch@reddit
Especially if youāve moved. I relocated from my home state to New England 3 years ago and checked unclaimed property on a whim just a few months ago. Turns out I had a $400 renterās insurance refund I wasnāt aware of.
Because of this I decided to check all of the states Iāve lived in (we moved around a lot as a kid) and had $19 in another state from a savings account I had as a child that apparently my mother never closed out when we left.
TheWildTofuHunter@reddit
I found $1.04 for me! My mom found quite a bounty and helping her work through the paperwork so she can claim it.
AintNoGobemouche@reddit
I have the paperwork printed out for three of them but havenāt sent them in yet thanks for the reminder.
xRVAx@reddit
This literally just got me $35!!! THANKS!
Throw-away17465@reddit
Legit. Got a couple bucks back this year pretty painlessly
TuckerCarlsonsOhface@reddit
I did this years ago, and got like $800 from a state where I used to live.
quintk@reddit
Neither I nor any family member I checked had anything in any of the states weāve lived. Several people in my wifeās family found property this way. My working theory is weāre just more responsible with our finances and legal affairs. ;-). (Joking)Ā
grunkle_dan78@reddit
I ended up with $130ish a couple of years ago
Siphoneder@reddit
Me when I spent half a day checking my state and all the states my relatives have lived in for me and my immediate family.
