ULPT Request: Shut off / divert bright light shining on balcony

ULPT Request: How can I disable a very bright light that is misaligned to shine into our balcony, rather than the parking lot. Landlord said they can’t adjust it “due to building code”. Cant sit outside without being blinded. It is inaccessible from the balcony and above ground level
louisville_lou@reddit
No such ‘building code’ that prevents them from moving a light that shining on your balcony and ‘into your home’- this is blatant ‘light trespass’
StarChaser_Tyger@reddit
Spray water on it. If it's a mercury or sodium light, the thermal shock should break it. If it's an LED, try and get the water inside, mostly around the socket where the pole fits, they're usually not well water proofed.
Try and get it on the bulbs themselves if possible.
No_Educator_6376@reddit
Get a large mirror and reflect the light at your landlord when your problem becomes his problem he will be forced to fix it.
Snap_Grackle_Pop@reddit
That's simply not practical or effective with real world size mirrors and parking lot geometries.
Plus the landlord would simply tell you to get rid of the mirror.
Hey_Gonzo@reddit
This sounds like the most Bugs Bunny solution and I love it. Do this
PoopsieDoodler@reddit
This is the solution

BB gun
dmac66@reddit
used this method in the past. it works but might take a few shots to get the desired effect

As a kid, I had an annoying streetlight shining in my bedroom window. It was up a hill behind our house. My dad used a .22 to shoot it out. He hit it with the first shot but it stayed on while dangling. His second shot took it out. I was so proud, and happy for the relief for a few months before the city repaired it.
RocknRoll_Grandma@reddit
The real answer, but seeing as how you already called about it you may have already dry-snitched on yourself.
Lets just say, if it goes out and has a plinker hole in it, you shouldn't own or possess such a plinker.
donau_kinder@reddit
And that hypothetical hole should come from a totally different angle than his balcony

rexfaktor@reddit
It would not be ethical to tint it with a paintball gun.
Cautious_Log8086@reddit
How reliably could this be done without breaking the lamp? Definitely not asking because i have a similar flourescent situation i would like to restore to a more amber light...
rexfaktor@reddit
Paintballs have a very small chance of breaking the lamp...they just don't have much velocity and they are designed to splat, not go thru say, human skin, just leave a welt.
srood1@reddit
Freezer them!
vr0202@reddit
But as a drive-by shooting, not from your balcony of course.
rexfaktor@reddit
To make it look plausible as a random crime if a camera should happen to catch it, it should be a drive-by in a clapped-out Altima with at least one missing bumper cover.
NetDork@reddit
Is there any other kind of Altima?

Unethical? Slingshot. Don't use a gun, even a bb gun, then the response will be out of hand. Use a slingshot because nobody cares about them and there's no advocacy groups in either direction regardless of the scale of the thing.
Send some rocks that way with a slingshot.

I'm waiting to see how possible hasn't been there yet

Can't shine a light if the power goes down.
Eastern-Extension125@reddit
I know someone who (successfully) sued their HOA bc of an outside light that was too bright. Try to look up building codes in your area maybe?
asyouwish@reddit
Call 311 and ask them about the code. My money is on a lazy landlord.
2gigi7@reddit
Can bet it's not laziness but tight ass-y-ness. By the sounds of it, a ladder won't cut it for access, so they probably have to rent out a scissor lift to reach it.
Just call the city, OP. Get your own answers and push from there.
Mother-Pride-Fest@reddit
Agreed, the light itself is likely against city building code if it is too bright or angled sideways.

Call the city for help with lighting pollution. They can give the landlord corrective notice or face fines.
UnbelievableDingo@reddit
Pew it out with a .22 or air riffle
vonhoother@reddit
If its power lines are accessible at all, there's your answer. Oops, no, that'd be vandalism, so don't destroy the power lines.
If you can get near it with a pole or a drone, you may be able to spray-paint it black.
NetDork@reddit
I see a ~~red door~ stupid bright light and I want to paint it black...

Many cities have codes against it buttt for unethical if it’s on a round pole pipe cutters are cheap and work like magic. I’m constantly hoping for another reason to use mine, it’s kinda fun
